AMERICAN AGRICULTURE ON THE GLOBAL STAGE: TRADE, TRUST, AND TOUGH CHALLENGES In this powerful episode of Rural Route, Trent Loos sits down with Nebraska farmer and cattle feeder Adam Grabenstein for a hard-hitting conversation about the future of American agriculture at home and abroad. Adam shares firsthand insight from his recent international trade work, including a major red meat promotion event in Mexico City, where demand for U.S. beef and pork remains strong thanks to decades of trust and relationship-building. The discussion dives deep into the global marketplace, revealing how American farmers are competing against rising threats like lab-grown meat and foreign production systems, while still delivering unmatched quality. Adam highlights how countries like Japan, Korea, and Mexico value U.S. products, not just for taste, but for consistency and reliability. Trent and Adam don't hold back when tackling major policy concerns. From the impact of the USMCA trade agreement to growing frustrations over government regulations, they expose the challenges producers face every day. They also address critical issues like GMO concerns in global markets, corporate control over agriculture, and the urgent need for Right to Repair laws to give farmers control over their own equipment and data. The conversation shifts to boots-on-the-ground realities, including meatpacking plant shutdowns, supply chain disruptions, and even wildfire devastation in Nebraska. Despite these challenges, the resilience of rural America shines through, with producers adapting, rebuilding, and continuing to feed the world. This episode is a must-watch for anyone who wants the truth about global agriculture, trade battles, and the fight to protect the American farmer.

Through partnerships with the U.S. Meat Export Federation, the Beef Checkoff is successfully marketing "the whole animal" by identifying international culinary needs that differ from domestic trends. A recent $7.9 million investment has allowed USMEF to promote products like tripe and tongue in Mexico, and a nutrient-dense "liver burger" in Peru to combat iron deficiency. "Across the world, there are some of the parts of a beef animal that we don't eat as much in the U.S.," says Cheryl DeVuyst, Vice Chair of the Cattlemen's Beef Board. "It is helping with the health and nutrition of the people in Peru, but then it's increasing the bottom line for our producers because that's selling product that we don't really eat as much of here."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Halstrom notes that while some markets like China are still throwing up obstacles, there are still areas like Central America and regions of Africa that hold tremendous promise for U.S. meat products.Warmer weather is on its way, but it brings gusty winds. Stu Muck says the warmer weather will put a dent in the snowpack around the state by later this week. Wisconsin detected its first case of H5N1 and announced the findings on Sunday. Pam Jahnke gets the details on what consumers should know from Adam Brock, administrator of the Food Safety and Recreation Dept. at DATCP. Brock says with the rigid system Wisconsin put in place earlier this year, the impacted cow/herd was detected before milk left the farm. Brock also reiterates that even milk impacted by H5N1 is safe for human consumption once pasteurized. It's a different dairy story from the current Alice in Dairyland, Sarah Hagenow. She visits with Stephanie Hoff about how real Wisconsin butter adds a delicious element to the holiday season. Hagenow reminds consumers that if they want to know their dairy comes from Wisconsin, look for the "Proudly Wisconsin" badge or the number 55 on the dairy packaging. The group met with farmers, importers and trade officials to discuss the trade agreement framework recently announced by President Donald Trump. Theiler notes there is strong potential for both U.S. beef and pork in the UK, but lingering non-tariff barriers to U.S. product must be addressed in order to provide full access. These barriers include excessive phytosanitary and labeling regulations. The UK in June opened a duty-free tariff rate quota for U.S. beef with a 2025 volume of about 8,500 metric tons. The country is currently a large pork importer, buying around $2.7 billion in 2024, nearly all of it European Union pork which enters tariff free. He says Wisconsin is a weather hub as it's home to the Atmospheric & Oceanic Sciences Department, the National Weather Service, several big-market TV meteorologists, the State Climate Office, and Wisconet. More sunshine on the way today, but showers keep popping up through Thursday. That's the word from Stu Muck. Farm appraisal appointments are taking up a lot of time with the Steffes Group. Ashley Huhn tells Pam Jahnke that farmers and their lenders sometimes want to get a handle on machinery inventory before the end of the calendar year. He also highlights some of the in-season bids that captured equipment while the harvest was underway. Paid for by Steffes Group. The U.S. Meat Export Federation just returned from a trade mission to the United Kingdom. While it may not represent a big geography, it does have a lot of population looking for meat. Jerry Thiel, chair elect of the USMEF, says the UK's alignment with the EU should make things easier - but it doesn't. The information vacuum created by the shutdown of USDA looms over the marketplace and trade activity. Beef Sales To China Plummet March 2025 Showed A Dramatic Drop Is Beef Sales To China New data from the USDA revealed steep declines in beef sales to China following the expiration of trade licenses. According to USDA/FAS data collected by USMEF, beef net sales to China for March 7-13 "plummeted" 92% from the previous week, and for March 14-20, they fell 97%. Overall through March 20, beef net sales to all countries are 43% lower than the previous four-week average. Additional analysis from Steiner Consulting Group found that outstanding beef sales to China are 24% lower year over year. The trade licenses, which were granted in the "Phase 1" trade deal with China in 2020, provide hundreds of U.S. meat plants with access to the Chinese market. However, following a 20% U.S. tariff on all Chinese exports, the Chinese Communist Party promised "strong, powerful countermeasures," which have included not only the expiring licenses, but also additional tariffs on exports of U.S. poultry (15%) and pork (10%). Trade licenses to pork and poultry processors were renewed. According to FAS, China was the U.S.' No. 3 agricultural export market in 2024, with $1.58 billion in beef, $1.11 billion in pork, and $490.11 million in poultry sales. On this episode, we revisit a prior conversation with J.T. Cooper, who was with the 10th Mountain Division of the U.S. Army in Mogadishu, Somalia, in 1993, and found himself in the middle of the harrowing military operation that became the inspiration for the movie “Blackhawk Down.” We also provide information on valuable resources for anyone considering suicide. The episode also features a discussion on early-season foliar nutrition with Brandt Technical Agronomist Eric Winans. We get you up to speed on what happened at this week's U.S. Meat Export Federation Spring Conference in Kansas City, and in “Bushels and Cents,” Ray Bohacz says farmers should do more than a visual inspection to ensure that the batteries on their farm equipment are secure. The episode also features new music from country music legend Barbara Fairchild. It's the only project ever produced on another artist by late Country Music Hall of Fame member Don Williams.
