AABP Executive Director Dr. Fred Gingrich is joined by Dr. Felipe Peña Mosca and Dr. Sandra Godden for this episode to discuss a paper that is available in the online first edition of The Bovine Practitioner, “Methods of processing recycled manure solids bedding on Midwest dairy farms II: Relationships between bedding characteristics and bedding bacterial count.” This is a companion paper that we previously discussed on Episode 165 of Have You Herd? which evaluated recycled manure solids processing methods and its impacts on bedding bacteria counts, udder health, milk quality and milk production. The first objective of this study was to identify bedding characteristics associated with bedding bacterial count (BBC) in ready-to-use (RTU) recycled manure solids (RMS). The second objective was to explore the association between processing method and bedding characteristics in RTU solids. A third objective was to investigate factors associated with BBC in used solids (after placed in stalls). The study found that increased dry matter, decreased organic matter and processing method were all associated with reduced BBC in RTU RMS. Veterinarians should evaluate bedding as part of a total milk quality program to promote good udder health practices on their client's farms. Peña Mosca, F., Godden, S., Royster, E., Crooker, B. A., & Timmerman, J. (2024). Methods of processing recycled manure solids bedding on Midwest dairy farms II: Relationships between bedding characteristics and bedding bacterial count. Wisconsin's dairy industry isn't the only one suffering with lower prices. Cow numbers are decreasing and the amount of milk per cow is remaining stable. Despite stable milk production per cow, innovative feeding and breeding strategies led to an 11% increase in butterfat per cow. Managing through all these trends will take sharp managers. Charitee Seebecker talks with UW-Extension Dairy Economist, Chuck Nicholson, about what he sees lining up for 2024. The phrase "Midwest Dairy Challenge" may lead you to believe the contestants are from a dairy background. Today, that's not the case. Wisconsin will host over 100 college and tech school students beginning tomorrow in the Green Bay area. Pam Jahnke talks to Ted Halbach, dairy instructor at UW-Madison and organizer behind the Midwest Dairy Challenge event. He says a majority of the competitors don't come from dairy, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't be welcome additions to dairy operations and dairy agribusiness. Concerns were voiced last week during Cattle Con in Orlando about how consumers will react to continued tight supplies of beef cattle in 2024. Kevin Good, vice president of market analysis at CattleFax, says this beef herd isn't going to grow quickly, but consumer prices at the store need to flatten and hold. John Heinberg, market advisor with Total Farm Marketing makes his regular appearance on the show. Today he talks with Pam Jahnke about last week's cattle inventory number and anticipated consumer reaction down the road. He also looks ahead to Thursday's USDA projections on what's coming out of South America.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

AABP Executive Director Dr. Fred Gingrich is joined by AABP President Dr. Sandra Godden. This episode of Have You Herd is sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim and their portfolio of 3600 mastitis coverage. Find out more at this link. Dr. Godden was an author on the paper published in the AABP peer-reviewed journal, The Bovine Practitioner. The journal's target audience is practicing cattle veterinarians, providing research that is clinically relevant, and is available open-access in a searchable format where you can download PDF's of articles at this link.We start our conversation by discussing recycled manure solids as a bedding for dairy cows and why producers may find this bedding choice attractive. Godden encourages veterinarians to get involved in the discussion to assist producers with their milk quality programs, including bedding choices and how to best make them work for that farm. This study investigated four different processing methods of recycled manure solids on 29 Midwest dairy farms: green, digested, mechanically drum composted and hot air drum dryers. Godden discusses the methods of this study and offered practical tips for veterinarians to submit bedding samples for quantitative cultures of pathogens of interest. The number one tip is to be consistent so you can compare your results. This study looked at the relationship between recycled manure solids processing methods and bedding bacteria counts, bulk tank bacteria counts, udder health and milk production. This study identifies some of the potential risk factors associated with the various processing methods but Godden reminds us that mastitis is a multi-factorial problem and veterinarians should be familiar with complete investigations on farms to ensure that all factors, including bedding type, are included.Links:Godden, S., Royster, E., Crooker, B., Timmerman, J., & Peña Mosca, F. Common ground is a phrase that is said less frequently these days, and environmental common ground isn't what everyone expects happens when sustainability experts and farmers sit down together. But maybe we should. The health of our soils, shifting weather patterns and the role of greenhouse gases and more means there is a lot to talk about and work on too. In this episode of Grounded by the Farm, we talk with Missouri dairy farmer Alex Peterson and Alisha Staggs, a sustainability expert who leads the dairy program with The Nature Conservancy's (TNC) North American Agriculture program. TNC is one of the world's largest and most respected environmental organizations. This is the third and final episode in our series on dairy. We visited two dairy farms in Oklahoma, talked to a cheesemonger and now look at the environmental footprint. Shouts out to Midwest Dairy for sponsoring the series and helping us line up participants. Please let us know if you have questions remaining about dairy. I recently had the chance to tour two dairy farms in Northeastern Oklahoma. The differences between the two and some of the similarities among them were really striking. After the tours, I sat down with Anthony & Charlie Coblentz and Logan Courtney, a neighbor whose dairy is just 15 minutes or so away. Touring first helped me see some of the differences and similarities and you can watch the video... you will hear and see both farms. So intriguing hearing a bit of each farm's origin story, why they have the kinds of cows they have, the ways they take care of the animals, ways cows get milked, the reasons those are the pieces that work, favorite dairy foods and so much more! You can access a lot of photos and videos of these farms at https://groundedbythefarm.com/two-dairy-farms-similarities-differences This episode is sponsored by Midwest Dairy. Knowing the first episode of our second season would be published the first week of March, it was obvious we needed to talk about the Cheese-A-Day Challenge started by "Farmer Tom" in the UK had to be discussed! Getting to Know Farmer Tom Let's start with the reality that the farmer who started the Cheese-A-Day Challenge, a taste-sensation for the month of February isn't a dairy farmer! In fact, he primarily grows arable crops including wheat for baking, barley for beer, and they also produce lamb. Tom says all of it works together in building soil health with rotations and grazing. If you listened to season 1 of Grounded by the Farm, you know we have done episodes on all of those foods, but hearing about how they are grown on Tom's farm in the East of England is definitely different. And I had to laugh that I'm sitting in St. Louis and interviewing a farmer on the other side of the Atlantic to find out he grows a specific barley for Budweiser! A Cheese-A-Day Challenge Farmer Tom's been doing the cheese-a-day challenge for a few years now. He says he started doing it because he only really knew two types of cheese -- cheddar and Stilton -- and yet, the country has more than a thousand different cheeses. So in February, a time some call Februdairy, he tries a different cheese every day. You may enjoy the fact that Tom couldn't help but be amazingly proud of the dairy produced close to home as he boasts the history of English cheeses and their superiority to French cheese, even though the French & Belgians may have a bigger cheese reputation. Tom's helping put that to bed. He's shared it on Twitter, where he goes by @Farmer_Ton_UK, the last couple of years, but it kept gaining speed. This year, not only did he post videos on Twitter, but he put longer versions on YouTube. And this was the first year that he worked with a cheese shop on boxes. Almost 100 people subscribed to the series and got small shipments of cheeses without labels so they could participate in a blind taste test! You can browse the Twitter hashtag #cheeseadaychallenge to see the fun! While I interviewed Tom in the middle of the challenge, I asked him this week, what cheese was his favorite. You can see it here. In this video like everyday. He talks to someone who is involved in UK agriculture. You can watch the highlights on Tom's favorite cheese day in the Twitter edit or the full video here. That's Tom on the right and the head of the National Farmers Union on the left! While talking with Tom, I mentioned the chance I had recently to do a virtual cheese tasting with the folks at Midwest Dairy. They compiled a selection of cheeses from various parts of the midwest and sent a box to several of us cheese enthusiasts! My favorite was a soft cheese called Milk & Honey from Edgewood Creamery! Here's a list of the range of cheeses we had the chance to taste and like Tom, some of the pairings we had were great! Raising Sheep Farmer Tom mentioned raising sheep which brings me back to lamb. The grazing of sheep and other smaller mammals like goats is definitely something that has a good fit in some areas of the world. As we discussed in an earlier episode, sheep can sometimes fit landscapes that aren't well-adapted for other animals. As someone who enjoys lamb, I love that he has a lamb biriyani recipe demo on his YouTube channel. Check it out. Farmer Time -- Connecting Farmers & Classrooms As if farming and organizing a month of cheese eating wasn't enough to keep Farmer Tom busy, he's started an organization called Farmer Time (farmertime.org.uk) where farmers are connected with classrooms for on-going interactions. Although it's started in the UK, they have already begun expanding it to several markets. The website serves as a connecting point with farmers and teachers entering their information into the site for pairing. And it builds direct connections between farmers and the classrooms where students can ask farmers questions about the topics they are studying! Farmers join the classes via Facetime, Skype or other video conferencing so students on a fortnightly basis (every other week like this podcast!). That gives the class a chance to see what's happening quickly. Find Farmer Tom Online Farm website: VillageFarm.org.uk Twitter: @Farmer_Tom_UK Insta: @farmertomgb Facebook: @FarmerTomUk

Conversation 96: The Story, Journey and Passion of Melissa Joy Dobbins, MS, RDN, CDE “Education is communication. This is why I love doing communication coaching, media training, speaker training and any kind of nutrition communications training for dietitians. We’re all communicators because we’re educators. There are ways to take your skills to the next level and to hone those skills by being more compelling, concise and to be a better you by elevating the visibility and image of a dietitian, while helping the public get credible information.” - Melissa Joy Dobbins, MS, RDN, CDE Today’s conversation is with Melissa Joy Dobbins, also known as the Guilt-Free RD®, who has a passion for education through good communication of sound science, smart nutrition and good food. When I transitioned from a clinical dietitian to a retail dietitian, there was a very new and unknown aspect of my job I was completely unfamiliar with and that was media. I remember when I learned I was going to provide nutrition communications via television, radio and newspaper articles, I about fell over. As I got into doing more with media, I also stumbled upon a few videos of an Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Media Spokesperson and I started watching more of her work to learn more. We then connected through Midwest Dairy a few years later and I truly have been a fan ever since, following her great work and resources she provides dietitians. Her Sound Bites Podcast inspired me to start my own and I feel extremely lucky to be able to have had this conversation with her. Please enjoy my conversation with Melissa. Conversation 64: The Story, Journey and Passion of Sarah Cortese, RD, LD “I’m a firm believer in you have to do what you love. If you have to wake up and you feel like work is work and you dread it, then you’re not where you need to be. ” - Sarah Cortese, RD, LD Today’s conversation is with Sarah Cortese, a registered dietitian with a lot of sass and a love for collecting cookbooks. A couple of podcasts ago, I mentioned a Registered Dietitian Summit I went to sponsored by Midwest Dairy and the National Pork Board. I was fortunate to meet new registered dietitian friends. At our first dinner meet and greet when we arrived, we introduced ourselves to the group. I knew instantly when Sarah introduced herself, we would connect and be friends. Conversation 61: The Story, Journey and Passion of Lucas Sjostrom “Our farmers are the experts. Every farm is different, we have the biggest and the smallest farms, every kind of operation you can imagine and we all are pulling the same weight. We are actually happy to celebrate our differences. For people who have never been to a farm before or never talked to a farmer before, they might assume all farming is this way and they do it like this but there are different soils, climates, even different breeds of cows that leads farmers to manage things in different ways, which I think is great. There is no one way of farming that is better or worse. ” - Lucas Sjostrom Today’s conversation is with Lucas Sjostrom, a farmer and passionate professional working for Minnesota dairy farmers Last September I was fortunate to attend a RDN Farm Tour Summit hosted by Midwest Dairy and the National Pork Board in Minneapolis, MN. I was very excited because I had the opportunity to tour both dairy and pork farms to learn more about farming practices in the midwest. Part of the tour took me to Sjostrom Farms, a dairy farm in Lafayette, MN where I met Steve and his son Lucas. Not only is Lucas a Lucas is a son, a brother, a husband, a father, a part-time farmer, the Industry Relations Director for Midwest Dairy, the Executive Director of the Minnesota Milk Producers Association, and last but not least a tour guide at Redhead Creamery, which his wife is the President and CEO. Conversation 50: The Story, Journey and Passion of Stephanie Cundith, MS, RD, LD “It’s very easy to react and provide facts (to consumers questions), we are filled with facts as dietitians. It’s not always the best way to reach a person. It’s really figuring out a way to have a conversation so that maybe the chance of you opening someone's mind is greater if they feel like their talking with you versus being talked at.” - Stephanie Cundith, MS, RD, LD My conversation today is with nutrition communicator expert, Stephanie Cundith. A few years ago, I was invited to attend a nutrition communicator event hosted by Midwest Dairy. Being new to the communication aspect of my job, I was very excited for this opportunity thanks to Stephanie Cundith. Stephanie has a very unique journey in becoming a registered dietitian with communications always being her underlying superpower.
