Wisconsin's dairy industry isn't the only one suffering with lower prices.  Cow numbers are decreasing and the amount of milk per cow is remaining stable. Despite stable milk production per cow, innovative feeding and breeding strategies led to an 11% increase in butterfat per cow. Managing through all these trends will take sharp managers.  Charitee Seebecker talks with UW-Extension Dairy Economist, Chuck Nicholson, about what he sees lining up for 2024. The phrase "Midwest Dairy Challenge" may lead you to believe the contestants are from a dairy background.  Today, that's not the case.  Wisconsin will host over 100 college and tech school students beginning tomorrow in the Green Bay area.  Pam Jahnke talks to Ted Halbach, dairy instructor at UW-Madison and organizer behind the Midwest Dairy Challenge event.  He says a majority of the competitors don't come from dairy, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't be welcome additions to dairy operations and dairy agribusiness. Concerns were voiced last week during Cattle Con in Orlando about how consumers will react to continued tight supplies of beef cattle in 2024.  Kevin Good, vice president of market analysis at CattleFax, says this beef herd isn't going to grow quickly, but consumer prices at the store need to flatten and hold. Wie gehen Angehörige von Demenzpatienten am besten mit der schwierigen Situation um? Hohenzollern-Prinzessin Désirée von Bohlen und Halbach gibt im SZ-Podcast „München persönlich“ Unterstützung. Alzheimer und andere Formen von Demenz nehmen zu in unserer Gesellschaft, in der die Menschen immer älter werden. Ein Thema, das Désirée von Bohlen und Halbach seit vielen Jahren beschäftigt. Lange Zeit hat sie ehrenamtlich bei einer Malteser Tagesstätte in München gearbeitet und war dort auch mit den Nöten der Angehörigen konfrontiert. „Diese oft schweren Schicksale haben mich zutiefst berührt“, sagt die geborene Hohenzollern-Prinzessin und Nichte von Königin Silvia von Schweden. Ihre Arbeit bei den Maltesern, ihre Ausbildung als systemischer Coach und die Trainerausbildung nach Silviahemmet, einer Initiative, die ihre Tante ins Leben gerufen hat, waren Grundlage für die Gründung ihrer eigenen Stiftung. Seit Juni 2017 unterstützt Désirée von Bohlen und Halbach mit Desideria Care Familien, die von Demenz betroffen sind. Dabei könnte die Münchnerin ganz anderen Tätigkeiten nachgehen. Zusammen mit ihrem Mann Eckbert von Bohlen und Halbach gehört sie zum deutschen Hochadel. Wenn dieser zu Feierlichkeiten wie Hochzeiten oder Taufen zusammenkommt, dann sind auch die beiden gern gesehene Gäste. Ein typisches Promi-Leben aber würde die engagierte Adelige absolut nicht ausfüllen. Das wird in Gesprächen mit ihr schnell klar. Désirée von Bohlen und Halbach erzählt im SZ-Podcast, wie es für sie war, als Prinzessin aufzuwachsen. Sie berichtet von ihren sehr persönlichen Gründen, sich für andere Menschen einzubringen. Zu Ostern 1923 bestimmte ein Ereignis die Berichterstattung. Die eskalierte Requirierungsmaßnahme französischer Soldaten im Krupp-Werk, Essen. Sie endete mit Schüssen in die versammelte Arbeiterschaft, an deren Ende 13 Tote und zahlreiche Verletzte auf Seiten der Arbeiter zu beklagen waren. Löste diese Gewalttat bereits einen Empörungssturm aus, so flammte dieser noch stärker auf, als die französischen Militärbehörden, die die Schuld für das Oster-Massaker bei der Werksleitung sahen, diese und den Konzernchef Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach verhafteten und vor einem Militärgericht am 8. Mai zu zehn- bis zwanzigjährigen Haftstrafen verurteilten. Da sich am 9. Mai alle Zeitungen dazu zu Wort meldeten, hören wir heute die Presseschau, die die Berliner Volks-Zeitung in ihrer Abendausgabe des Tages abdruckte. Es liest Frank Riede.

Auch die Ostertage des Jahres 1923 standen ganz im Zeichen der Ruhrbesetzung, da am Ostersamstag, der auf den 31. März fiel, französische Soldaten ein Massaker an streikenden Arbeitern verübten, das in die Geschichte als „blutiger Karsamstag“ einging. Zwei Militärkommandos waren in Essen in ein Werk von Krupp eingedrungen, um LKWs zu beschlagnahmen. Da aber die meisten LKWs schon unterwegs waren, gelang dies nicht. Die Werksleitung ließ die Arbeit niederlegen und die Arbeiterschaft versammelte sich protestierend vor der Wagenhalle. Verhandlungen mit den Kommandos scheiterten und irgendwann schossen sich die Soldaten ohne Vorwarnung den Weg frei und töteten dabei 13 Menschen und verletzten unzählige mehr. Einen Monat später wurden übrigens die Werksleiter und auch Gustav Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach selbst von den Militärbehörden als Mitverantwortliche zu Haftstrafen verurteilt. Berührend“ sei das Gespräch gewesen, sagt Friedrich von Bohlen und Halbach am Ende von rund siebzig Minuten Podcast-Aufnahme. Ob er manchmal das Gefühl gehabt habe, es seinen Vorfahren beweisen zu wollen, hatte FUNKE-Verlegerin Julia Becker nur wenige Momente zuvor gefragt. Klare Antwort: „Ja.“ Von Bohlen und Halbach ist der Neffe von Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach. Sein Onkel Alfried war das letzte Familienmitglied der Krupp-Dynastie, der das Familienunternehmen - die Friedrich Krupp GmbH - führte. Beruflich schlug von Bohlen und Halbach nie den Weg zum Stahl ein, doch er hat eine starke Meinung, wenn es um die Krupp-Historie geht. Julia Becker und Tobias Korenke, Leiter der FUNKE-Unternehmenskommunikation, haben von Bohlen und Halbach in die aktuelle Folge des Podcasts „Salon FUNKE“ eingeladen. „Wo ist der Name Krupp in seinem eigenen Nachnamen geblieben?“, „Was verbindet von Bohlen und Halbach mit der Villa Hügel?“, fragen sie ihn. Der Fokus des Gespräches liegt allerdings auf der starken Kritik von Bohlen und Halbachs an Berthold Beitz. Er wirft ihm im Gespräch einen autokratischen Führungsstil und Selbstüberheblichkeit vor. Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach machte Beitz 1953 zu seinem persönlichen Generalbevollmächtigten. Nach Alfried Krupps Tode gingen sein Gesamtvermögen und der Besitz der Firma in die Krupp-Stiftung über. Dies war nur durch den Erbverzicht seines Sohns Arndt von Bohlen und Halbach möglich. Beitz wurde Vorsitzender des Stiftungskuratoriums, die Nachfahren der Unternehmerfamilie haben bis heute keine Rolle in der Stiftung. Beitz habe zuvor mit großer Zielstrebigkeit versucht, die Trennung der Familie und der Firma herbeizuführen, weil er „ansonsten mit Sicherheit nicht diese Freiräume danach gehabt hätte, die er sich dann auch genommen hat.“ +++ Ebenfalls in der Folge thematisiert werden: die familiäre Aufarbeitung des Nationalsozialismus und die Arbeit von Bohlen und Halbachs als Chef der Biotech-Firma Molecular Health. Von Bohlen und Halbach war bis zum letzten Jahr außerdem Aufsichtsratsvorsitzender von Curevac. Warum ist die Impfstoffherstellung von Curevac gescheitert?

Demenz geht häufig mit einem Schreckensbild und negativen Stereotypen einher. Wie lassen sich diese Bilder ändern? Die Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-Stiftung - voller Rätsel, voller Mythen. Wir treffen den Schlüssel zu dieser Stiftung, der uns aufschließt und uns Dinge zeigt, die nicht oft zu sehen sind. Es ist Sprecher des Vorstandes der Stiftung - Volker Troche. Seit über 10 Jahren im höchsten Amt, aber schon seit 1999 auf Hügel. Natürlich treffen wir ihn auch dort… im ehemaligen Gästehaus sitzt heute die Stiftung.

Friedrich von Bohlen und Halbach, Nachfahre der legendären Essener Unternehmerfamilie Krupp, hat sich als Unternehmer im Medizin-Sektor einen Namen gemacht. Biotechnologie, so sagt er, sei die beste Medizin, nicht nur gegen Corona. Der Neffe des letzten Alleineigentümers der Firma Krupp, Alfried Krupp, ist Biochemiker und führt die Geschäfte einer Holding, in der Beteiligungen des SAP-Mitbegründers Dietmar Hopp gebündelt sind. Im Portfolio befindet sich auch der Tübinger Impfstoffhersteller Curevac. Aufmerksam verfolgt Friedrich von Bohlen und Halbach seit jeher die Entwicklung des Essener Traditionskonzerns Thyssenkrupp. Zuweilen äußert er sich zur aktuellen Lage der Essener Traditionsfirma, so auch im Gespräch mit Ulf Meinke in der neuen Podcast-Folge von „Die Wirtschaftsreporter“ der Westdeutschen Allgemeinen Zeitung (WAZ). Thyssenkrupp, so scheint es, spürt derzeit in besonderem Maße negative Folgen des Kriegs von Russland gegen die Ukraine. „Ich mache mir eigentlich schon lange Sorgen um das Unternehmen, weil die Fehler sehr weit zurückreichen“, sagt Friedrich von Bohlen und Halbach. „Das Unternehmen ist ein Gemischtwarenladen geworden über die Zeit.“ Im Podcast erläutert er auch, warum er auf eine andere Strategie setzen würde – eine aggressive Fokussierung auf grünen Stahl samt Trennung von anderen Aktivitäten. One of our favorite interviews from 2021: Tim Halbach joins us from his office at the National Weather Service.

We're at the end of the series. We talk about the sudden collapse of Krupp Steel. First, we discuss Krupp's Holocaust reparations fund, and how they somehow managed to make even that anti-Semitic. Then we talk about Arndt von Bohlen und Halbach, the useless playboy son of Alfried Krupp. He hung out with some really interesting failsons and faildaughters and got up to some hijinks, none of which even approach the horrors of his father. In discussing the collapse, we use the 'business school' approach and the 'parapolitical' approach to understanding what was going on, and hopefully tried to synthesize the two. Illiquidity and Krupp not cutting in the right people, basically, were the two root causes, possibly paired with a controlled demolition. There's also the almost unparalleled lines of credit Krupp was giving to the Eastern bloc which can't really be explained through a straight 'business school' understanding of events. Tax law is discussed, also. Krupp Steel became a foundation, and we discuss the fates of Alfried and Arndt. To finish, I created the Programmed To Chill Matrix of Business Success to quantify Krupp's many, many moral, legal, and dare I say religious failings.
