What is integrative medicine and how is it different than what we are used to which is mostly silos of care and mostly Western medicine? My guest today will offer an alternative to this, a better way to treat a patient with a condition or disease. Dr. Britt Stone, an Assistant Clinical Professor at Vanderbilt Medical Center, spent her pandemic time pursuing a fellowship in Integrative Medicine at University of Arizona. She will describe how clinicians can work together with the families of people with Parkinson's to make for a better experience and a healthier outcome. She believes treatment should include prescribed exercise, a healthy diet and, possibly complimentary medicines. We had a great discussion. She opened my eyes to possibilities and the team approach to a better quality of life. If you like what you hear, let's see if we can change the healthcare system together. https://www.vumc.org/neurology/person/britt-stone-md https://www.herbsociety.org/ https://integrativemedicine.arizona.edu/health_hub/awcimagazine/what_is_integrative_medicine.html https://www.dbsandme.com/en.html

Andrea (she/her) has been fascinated by all things birth and babies since she was a small child. She began her doula career informally in 1999, and then became a full-time birth doula in 2015. She was motivated by the desire to support all pregnant people as they give birth where they feel most comfortable and safe, surrounded by skillful and compassionate support. Within the first few years of opening her solo practice, she had supported over 80 families as a birth doula, and taught over 100 families as a childbirth educator. After becoming one of the busiest and most sought-after doulas & childbirth educators in Nashville, Andrea decided that she wanted to support even more families during this transformative time as well as mentor other doulas. She founded her agency, East Nashville Doulas LLC, in 2018 with the same passion to provide expert, evidence-based care & education to Nashville's families. Her agency embodies East Nashville's values--the progressive, community-oriented, inclusive, and diverse neighborhoods that draw so many to this side of the river. Because of these values, East Nashville Doulas is highly respected and recommended by the Nashville birth community, including the top OBs and midwifery practices in town.East Nashville Doulas are also the trainers for the Vanderbilt Volunteer Doulas Program, a program that pairs student midwives and other graduate students with clients in need of a doula at Vanderbilt Medical Center. When Andrea is not supporting & teaching expecting families or mentoring other doulas, you can find her walking her two dogs, Moses & Murray, reading a great book, knitting socks, crocheting a blanket, or going on a movie date with her wife, Rachel. https://eastnashvilledoula.comhttps://www.instagram.com/eastnashvilledoulas/
Part 2 Former Vanderbilt nurse, RaDonda Vaught, joins Nurses Uncorked, for part-two of a revealing podcast. In 2017 RaDonda Vaught, a Registered Nurse at Vanderbilt Medical Center, mistakenly administered a paralytic medication resulting in a patient death. This lead to revocation of her nursing license (2021). In 2022, RaDonda became one of the first nurses to be criminally prosecuted for an unintentional nursing error. Ultimately, she was convicted of criminal negligent homicide and abuse of an impaired adult. Fortunately, she was able to narrowly avoid serving time in prison and was sentenced to three years of probation. This landmark case quickly garnered international attention and shined a spotlight on Vanderbilt's culpability in this incident. The American Nurses Association, American Bar Association, Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) and many more all issued public statements in support of Vaught and denouncing the criminal prosecution of nurses. Around the world nurses expressed outrage at the blatant disregard of just culture and the dangerous precedent this set. Overnight the landscape of the nursing profession irrevocably changed for the worse and became significantly less safe for patients and nurses alike. Nurses have left the profession in the wake of the trial. Suddenly we faced not just civil litigation or Board of Nursing action, we faced criminal prosecution and loss of our freedom for committing unintentional human error. Nurse Erica began covering the RaDonda Vaught case with the Tennessee Board of Nursing hearing, then attended the criminal trial and sentencing in person. Nurse Erica and RaDonda have since become close friends and allies. Part two of a two-part podcast. We had a little conversation about this case a while back as the trial was wrapping up, and wanted to cover the story in more detail as we approach the sentencing of Radonda Vaught, who was found guilty of criminally negligent homicide and abuse of an impaired adult in the death. The debate continues, was this verdict correct? What does it mean for health care workers and organizations? Listen to the story and let us know what you think! In this special bonus JSP Blast Episode, we are focusing on the criminal conviction of RaDonda Vaught for criminally negligent homicide and abuse of an impaired adult. She was convicted in Tennessee on March 25, 2022. This conviction is the result of a medication error in 2017, when she administered vecuronium, a paralyzing agent, instead of Versed, a sedative. This resulted in a sentinel event and the patient, Charlene Murphey, died as a result. Vanderbilt Medical Center failed to report this event to state and federal authorities and two neurologists ruled her death to be natural causes despite the medication error. Through an anonymous tip, CMS was made aware of the events and inspected Vanderbilt ordering a plan of correction or losing Medicare and Medicaid money. It was after this, that the DA brought charges against RaDonda Vaught and the Board of Health, who had previously investigated her and found no violation of nurse practice act, reopened an investigation, revoked her license and order penalty monies paid. The first 20 minutes is Tom & Ben's thoughts on the case as well as a synopsis of the timeline of the case. We also discuss our thoughts on a nurse being held criminally responsible for a medication error and the impact on healthcare personnel moving forward. The next 20 minutes is our interview with Nurse Liz. She has been vocal about the case throughout her well known social media channels and we appreciated the opportunity to get her thoughts. We discuss the impact of the criminal case moving forward as well as alarm fatigue and Liz gives some advice to nurses and healthcare personnel moving forward. Liz can be found on facebook @im.nurse.liz on instragram @im.nurse.liz on youtube @im.nurse.liz and TikTok @im.nurse.liz The final 20 minutes is our interview with Tina from Good Nurse Bad Nurse. Tina has covered this case for the last 3 years including several interviews with RaDonda and Tina was personally at the trial for the three days of testimony. We discuss the impact of the verdict on healthcare in general and we discuss the current DA Glenn Funk as well as his opponent this election cycle, Sara Beth Myers. Finally, Tina gives some advice for nurses moving forward. Tina can be found at www.goodnursebadnurse.com on her podcast, “Good Nurse Bad Nurse” as well as facebook @goodnursebadnurse and Instagram @gnbnpodcast

The Bacon Podcast with Brian Basilico | CURE Your Sales & Marketing with Ideas That Make It SIZZLE!
I had a meeting with someone on Lunchlub named Holly. She works at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Media. We discussed how they are changing their methodologies to an email newsletter, educational content, and even Podcast to communicate with patients, doctors, and staff. It makes me think of how the communication industry has changed with newspapers and magazines all having an online model. They now have to compete with headlines that act as clickbait to get readers' attention. Speaking of clickbait, there are several techniques that are being used in social media to get the engagement that are unfair vanity metrics to trick the algorithms. Also, do you know the difference between real and vanity metrics in your business? Today we will discuss: Vanity Fair - The news and information industry Unfair vanity - Clickbait techniques that bear little fruit Vanity Metrics - What really matters in business In this episode, we will look at how you are what you eat, and your mind is also about what you feed it to grow your business. Everything in healthcare has changed over the last three months. From the investments being made to how we operate our healthcare facilities, COVID-19 is impacting the way we’ve operated and will forever change the way we operate in the future. In order to gain a complete understanding of the impact COVID-19 has had and will continue to have on healthcare, we’ve pulled together experts both on the frontlines fighting this disease and also investing in companies that could help prevent major health crises like the one day. In a webinar hosted on June 5th, 2020, we were joined by https://www.jumpstarthealth.co/vic-gatto (Vic Gatto) CEO of https://www.jumpstarthealth.co/ (Jumpstart Health Investors), https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-morris-972959a/ (John Morris, MD) Chief of Staff, https://www.vumc.org/ (Vanderbilt Medical Center) and https://www.linkedin.com/in/miller-morris-8b073b89/ (Miller Morris, M.A, M.P.H.), CEO, The Comma Collective as they provided unique perspectives on the topic of healthcare, public health and health investing as they relate to COVID-19.
The General Services Administration has informed President-elect Joe Biden and his team that the Trump administration is ready to begin the transition process more than two weeks after the former Vice President was declared the election winner. In a letter, GSA administrator Emily Murphy said she wasn’t pressured by the White House to delay the formal transition. Now that the transition can officially begin, current administration officials can coordinate with the incoming Biden team. David Gergen is a former Presidential Adviser to Presidents Nixon, Ford, Reagan and Clinton and is also a CNN Political Analyst. He tells AC360 he thinks Trump did the right thing but it’s vital that he tells his base and the whole country that Joe Biden is a legitimate president and he is not put there by fraud. Plus, Covid-19 hospitalizations and cases are rising with Thanksgiving only days away. The CDC is advising people to not travel to see family and friends. White House Coronavirus Task Force member Dr. Anthony Fauci said what worries him most is “the immediate situation with people traveling from different places, coming home for Thanksgiving.” Dr. William Schaffner is a professor at the Division of Infectious Diseases at Vanderbilt Medical Center. He joins AC360 to discuss his concerns for the upcoming holiday season. Transcript"In our case, we're trying to transfer an antibody from one person to another. And it's actually a simpler idea because the recipient of an antibody RNA does not have to really respond to it. They just make it, and they have instant immunity." -Dr. James CroweIn today’s episode, our host Dr. Celine Gounder speaks with Dr. James Crowe, Director of the Vaccine Center at Vanderbilt Medical Center, about the next phase in antibody-based therapies, which is being spearheaded by Dr. Crowe’s lab at Vanderbilt. They are working on a technique to manufacture immunity in a test tube by isolating a single antibody for a disease that can be used to specifically target and fight that disease. They talk about the upcoming clinical trials of monoclonal antibodies for treatment of COVID-19, and how this method differs from convalescent plasma and vaccination. Finally, they discuss the next frontier- how science may soon take us beyond drug treatments and into a realm where our bodies are programmed to defeat a virus before we’ve ever encountered it… a true magic bullet. This podcast was created by Just Human Productions. We take a look at the impact that Bernie Sanders campaign had on the Medicare for All movement. COVID-19 brings out the pinko commie in NY Governor Andrew Cuomo, who decides to socialize the NY hospital systems. People of color are, as with everything health-related, hit disproportionately by the effects of COVID-19, with blacks being diagnosed and dying in greater numbers than all others. Show Notes Bernie Sanders drops out of the Presidential race, and Ben & Stephanie reflect on his impact on the Medicare for All movement. Bernie had very little noticeable impact on public support for M4A (based on public opinion polls anyway), but his biggest accomplishment was starting to close the massive gap between the base of the Democratic party (and the country) and Democratic legislators and candidates. However, coronavirus is having a major impact on public support for Medicare for All. The very first poll we've seen on M4A since the pandemic started shows an almost 10% increase in support. Why? COVID-19 has exposed pretty much every alternative to M4A as stupid. All of the Democratic candidates who fought to maintain the employer-based healthcare system - claiming this means "you can keep your plan if you like it" - have a lot of mud on their face. To date, no Republican has been sighted calling to repeal Obamacare since the crisis began. What could the GOP position on healthcare possibly be this election cycle? In one of the more extraordinary developments of the pandemic, New York has taken steps to merge all hospitals into a single provider system, sharing staff and all other resources. The goal is to prevent any one hospital from becoming overwhelmed by coronavirus patients, by sending staff, ventilators, and personal protective equipment wherever they're most needed. This resembles a move towards socialized medicine, even though New York's Governor Cuomo has been luke-warm towards the New York Health Act, which would establish a Medicare for All system in NY. Apparently there are no atheists in foxholes, and no capitalists during pandemics. Even before coronavirus, though, our profit-driven provider system was dangerous for patients. Ben describes a picket by nurses at St. Elizabeth's hospital in Boston, where dangerous understaffing was taking place just because the hospital didn't want to send patients to other hospitals with more capacity - since they'd be losing those profits. Coronavirus has also kicked off a remarkable 180 by a wide range of elected officials and policy wonks who have spent the past two years concern-trolling Medicare for All: how will we pay for it? you can't just overhaul the whole system over night! Now they're socializing hospital systems and passing multi-trillion dollar economic support programs. Next, we spend some time looking at the racial inequities in the impact of coronavirus, as well as in access to testing and treatment. In Chicago, black people are seven times more likely to die from coronavirus than white people. Of the 98 deaths from coronavirus in Chicago, 72% were black. In downtown Nashville, three drive-through testing centers, including one outside the historically black Meharry Medical College, were not able to open for weeks due to lack of protective equipment. The only two active testing centers were in white suburbs of Nashville, run by Vanderbilt Medical Center. Incredibly, the CDC is not tracking coronavirus data by race. One recent study looking at data from several states found that black patients presenting with the same symptoms, like cough and fever, were less likely to be recommended for coronavirus testing. Similar to widespread racial bias in other areas of medical care. Finally, with rapidly rising unemployment, Congress will have to address widespread loss of health insurance in their next relief bill. The Rev. Jesse Jackson has called for Medicare coverage for everyone during this crisis,

The lineage of Nashville's Fairfield Four thrives and resonates in Odessa Settles, this week's guest on The String. The daughter of singer Walter J. Settles (1928-1999), Odessa is an in-demand singer who values the full spectrum of sacred to secular music, especially the roots/Americana world where she's amassed a long resume. She's been a guest vocalist on projects by Darrell Scott, Kathy Mattea, Tim O'Brien and last year's Rifles & Rosary Beads by Mary Gauthier. She works solo and in combination with her surviving brothers (she was the only girl of eight kids growing up) in the vocal group The Settles Connection. And she's pulled all this off while maintaining an intense career as a nurse for premature babies at Vanderbilt Medical Center. Also in the hour, a visit with Trent Wagler and Jay Lapp, veterans of VA band The Steel Wheels, who've just released their seventh LP album.

My first day in the hospital was filled with MRIs and CT Scans. Okay that a little exaggeration, there was only one MRI and 2 CT scans. Still, they were unpleasant. Plus, they're expensive, and you have to go elsewhere in the hospital. It turns out there's another option, that many neurologists don't even know about. It's called Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound, and it gives the medical team information the other scans don't. Plus, it involves no radiation or special rooms. It doesn't replace the other scans altogether, but give the doctors another tool for treating stroke patients. This week, I talk with Dr, Aaron Stayman from Swedish Medical Center. Dr. Stayman is an advocate for and expert in Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound. This week, we learn about his background, talk about aphasia, and spent the bulk of our time talking about Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound. We explore what it is, how it works, and how it benefits patients. Aaron cites 5 benefits of Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound It's cheaper There's no radiation It's portable It's repeatable There are no issues related to magnets Here's a short look at what the doctor sees in a scan: [embed]https://youtu.be/Z7L3f2hGGjQ[/embed] Bio Dr. Aaron Stayman attended medical school at Tufts University in Boston, MA. He completed an internship in internal medicine and a neurology residency at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, TN. During his vascular neurology fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, he received specific training in the performance and interpretation of carotid and transcranial ultrasound. He is currently a neurohospitalist at Swedish Medical Center and Medical Director of the Swedish Cerebrovascular Ultrasound Laboratory. My GF rightly pointed out that I will need to figure out how to drain the hot water from the pasta with one hand without spilling it and the water all over myself and the kitchen floor. Before we completed this problem solving, she went ahead and made it because she's awesome like that. Later on, I stumbled across a strategy on Twitter. Put a colander or wire strainer that you can lift with one hand. Fill the pot with water, and add the pasta to the strainer before cooking it. Then boil or whatever, and when it's done, just lift out the strainer with the pasta and leave the water behind. You know, basically the way the make French fries at McDonalds. I have different sized ones for different pans. And a less open one for peas!!! Frankly Speaking About Cancer with the Cancer Support Community
Over the last 60 years, death rates from cervical cancer have declined steadily, due much to the increased use of the Pap test. While diagnoses of cervical cancer death remain small compared to breast cancer and ovarian cancer, cervical cancer remains an incredibly serious illness to those it affects. January is National Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, and in this episode, we're going take a closer look at this disease and discuss the important medical, social and emotional issues associated with cervical cancer. Guests include Marilyn Uccardi, cervical cancer patient and participant at TWC-Central New Jersey; Patty Kingsley, cervical cancer patient and participant at TWC-Southwest Florida; and Sheryl Redlin-Frazier, RN, OCN, Clinical Learning Consultant, Nursing Education & Development, Vanderbilt Medical Center.
