Guests: Scyld Berry and David Woodhouse We tend to take the concept of the tour for granted, yet is it not one of cricket's strangest phenomena? Devised on Victorian timescales of months at sea followed by a lengthy navigation of distant lands, the notion feels increasingly at odds with modern life. So bound up is cricket with travel that the centrally contracted England player will spend no more than a couple of months each year in their own bed, producing a carbon footprint more like Orwell's boot stamping on a human face forever. And yet the tour offers the game much of its romance, its exocticism, its thrill. The variety of experience, the difference in everything from the pitches to the crowd noise, the chance to see and understand something of how the rest of the world lives and plays, offer cricket a richness that other sport don't have. Much of the game's myth making and camaraderie comes from being thrown together, a travelling circus of players, families, coaches, support staff and media. In this episode Jon speaks to Scyld Berry, one of the game's foremost writers for many decades, the Telegraph's chief cricket correspondent and a former editor of Wisden Almanack. He also speaks to David Woodhouse about one tour in particular - England's tour of West Indies in 1953/4, a tour that Len Hutton, who because the first professional to captain England overseas, said ‘shortened his career by two years', to which the tour player/manager Charles Palmer replied, ‘I'm surprised he only said two'. "I am incurably hopeful about the future of Africa despite all the difficulties we faced this year." With these words, one of the most influential Catholic bishops in Africa, Archbishop Charles Palmer-Buckle, reviews this passing year (2021) and the challenges and signs of hope in Africa today. He invites Africans and the world to celebrate this Christmas with joy, despite the challenges of the ongoing pandemic. His message of hope is compelling; his personal account of his long battle with Covid is gripping; his testimonies of hope in Africa and the power of faith invite us to reject all the negative characterization of Africa and enter into 2022 with renewed faith in Africa's gift to the world, and a new and better world built on Global solidarity, and on Pope Francis programmatic praxis for human and cosmic flourishing in Fratelli Tutti.
Michael Palmer was 15 when he went missing while riding his bike on a quiet Alaskan road. He would never be found and to this day it is unknown what happened as rumors are flying around. His older brother, Charles Palmer was 30 when he went on a group trip to go snowmobiling and never made it back to their cabin after the first day. Many believe the only thing that could've happened to him was an alien abduction. Either way, this family suffered greatly through the years.Patreon: (Sandra Bland Case Up Now) https://www.patreon.com/greatunsolvedTwitter: @GreatUnsolvedInstagram: @greatunsolvedpodcastLinks: https://linktr.ee/thegreatunsolvedThe Great Unsolved is partnered with the Oracl3 Network. https://t.co/rtjFkLfwG9?amp=1

Gloom, doom, and light-eating tentacle dogs are the topic du jour for the Three Who Rule, as they viewed the Rona Munro penned, Charles Palmer helmed “The Eaters of Light” and formed cogent, well reasoned analyses of the third to last episode of Series 10, and didn’t at all speculate wildly about Mondasian Cybermen, bearded former Masters, Missy’s weird turn towards mercy and more. And speaking of Masters, Big Finish just announced that Derek Jacobi will return to his “Utopia” role as the Doctor’s best enemy with a new series of “War Master” audios, which recent BF convert Warren is feverishly anticipating! Jeff O’Neill formally began his extensive career by attending the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. Upon graduation, he elected to work under Charles Palmer at Aureole, where he spent the next two years climbing the ranks of the kitchen, ultimately establishing himself as the restaurant’s Chef Saucier. O’Neill went on to work at Daniel Boulud’s Daniel, Eric Ripert’s Le Bernardin and eatery L’Escalier at The Breakers Hotel, in Palm Beach. Most recently, he was the Executive Chef of Donald Trump’s ultra-exclusive Mar a Lago Club in Palm Beach. He has made multiple appearances on the “Oprah Winfrey Show”, and his dishes consistently top Oprah Winfrey’s list of “the things you must try before you die”.
The first Radio Free Skaro episode of 2011 features the return of the popular Miniscope segments (well, some of you liked them in the past, anyhow) wherein the Three Who Rule discuss the works of a particular writer, director, or some other behind the scenes person in their careers on Doctor Who. Dick Mills, the initial subject for this episode, was bumped to next week (about more later), so Series 3 director Charles Palmer became a last minute subject. How did his efforts rate with your intrepid hosts? Listen on! Check out the show notes at www.radiofreeskaro.com.
This panel discussion from October 22, 2009, hosted jointly by ISTS and the Institute for Information Infrastructure Protection (I3P), in recognition of Cyber Security Awareness Month, explored a range of topics related to the separation of our private and public selves online. The panel addressed such vexing questions as: Does an employer have the right to monitor and control its employees’ online activities? Should any information posted on the Internet be considered private? Do these questions suggest a paradigm shift in human interaction unique to the cyber realm or have we faced similar questions from technologies in the past? The panel—moderated by Denise Anthony, Chair of the Department of Sociology and Research Director of ISTS—featured: Hans Brechbuhl, Executive Director of the Center for Digital Strategies at the Tuck School of Business, James Moor, Daniel P. Stone Professor in Intellectual and Moral Philosophy, Charles Palmer, Chief Technical Officer of Security and Privacy at IBM, and Mark Williams, Associate Professor of Film and Television Studies.
Chuck joins the navy at 17, hears and rejects the gospel during boot training. Later he says “yes” to Jesus but not with his heart. He marries 15-year-old Nell when he's 20. They party and have a son, Larry, but alcohol nearly drives them apart. When the navy sends him to Iceland, she wants a divorce. He persuades her to try again but the marriage founders. A sailor urges Chuck to come to Bible study and he eventually prays for salvation. Nell comes at Christmas but they fight, and he sequesters the boy. She goes back to Texas and he prays for two years. Finally, she returns, hears him preach and professes faith in Christ. The marriage is restored.
