There’s been reports of a surge in cases of a respirator virus in China that has evoked dark echoes of the start of the covid-19 pandemic almost five years ago. The Chinese cases are reported to be infectious with Human Metapneumoia Virus known to doctors as HMPV. Dr. Richard Jackson, Adjunct Professor of Biology and Chemistry at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology says the virus is similar to a cold. “HMPV is actually a rather common virus that causes cold symptoms. So, think of the fall, early winter, midwinter and you get a cold. About 10 to 15 % of cases are actually caused by HMPV.” The symptoms of an HMPV infection are also similar to the common cold. “Runny nose, cough, tiredness, sore throat, swelling in your throat, sneezing, maybe low-grade fever.” Dr. Jackson shared a misconception about HMPV. “I think that one thing we need to realize is China, they did not come from what we would say a verified source was, and so it caused a lot of fear. About two or three weeks after those first reports came out, the World Health Organization came out with a report that said the increase in HMPV in northern China, which is happening this time of year in all the northern climates, was within the expected range. And so just like we were talking about two weeks ago here in the United States, the range was, we had some people that were a little above the average, some areas that were a little below. What happened in China was within the expected range, so it shouldn't have caused fear. And the other thing to remember is that when people hear virus out of China, they immediately think of COVID. And this was completely, this virus is completely different from COVID.”Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Educational Psychologist. 41(2), 75-86. In the episode, we dig into whether one can teach, and how one can teach, conflict resolution, critical thinking, and even tease the subject of teaching leadership. The debate really gets playfully heated when they talk about critical thinking. Clark uses the famous phrase, “yes… and…” Matt references the great improv in business practitioner, Kat Koppett. Her first book, Training to Imagine is a great source to go into yes, anding… in more depth. Matt references evolutionary skills and brings up the references from Sweller: Sweller, J. (2016). We also explore how to assess whether a person has a skill or the potential to develop a skill. We debate transferability and whether skills— especially complex skills need be taught within a contextual domain. Matt argues yes. Koreen argues no. Clark argues “It depends.” They also debate whether, and how much, talent plays into skill development. Heck… is talent even a thing? The big argument centers around Carnegie Hall and playing golf! And of course, Anders Ericsson is a part of the conversation. Ericsson, K. A., & Charness, N. (1994). Expert performance: Its structure and acquisition. American Psychologist, 49: 725–747. Matt referenced the Human Development expert, Richard Lerner. Koreen references the hostage negotiator, Chris Voss and his book, Never Split the Difference. And we even debate how transferrable the skill of game design is! And we talked about so much more!!! Of course, we run out of time because we had so much fun chatting with Koreen… that we didn't get to Best and Worst! Next time… and Koreen will be back! Last month – some 70 million years after it lived – a new species of predatory dinosaur was identified. The newly named species -- Tyrannosaurus macraeensis -- was closely related to the iconic Tyrannosaurus rex. Researchers believe it may be T.rex's closest relative, even though it may have lived seven million years before T.rex. Harrisburg University of Science and Technology professor Dr. Steven Jasinski was a part of a team of researchers that made the discovery, which came 40 years after the dinosaur's fossils were found in New Mexico. But just within the past 11 years, Jasinski and other researchers began studying the fossils of what was believed to be a Tyrannosaurus rex. On The Spark Tuesday, Jasinski spoke about how the researchers determined they had found a different species,"We have parts of the skull and we have some of the parts of the spine. The backbone, some of the vertebrae, or at least piece of the vertebrae. And previously, especially with the lower jaw that we had recovered, it looked similar to T.rex, most super large predatory dinosaurs that we find that are around this age and in this general region of the world, are all considered to be T.rex, because T.rex seems to be pretty expansive and all over the place. But smaller features of the jaw or pieces of the skull, especially around the eyes themselves, tell us once we looked more in depth, that this is distinct from T.rex. It's something new and different." Tyrannosaurus macraeensis may have been 35 feet long with different eyes and teeth than the T.rex. The discovery of Tyrannosaurus macraeensis has scientists rethinking how and where Tyrannosaurus rex evolved, according to Jasinski,"The thought was that we have really, really old members of the group from North America. They travel to Asia, and then they eventually traveled back to North America. And T.rex basically then came from Asia. And so that's what we always have assumed. But now finding older specimens that are more closely related in the southern part of the United States and southern North America, it looks like what we may have is that T.rex actually evolved in southern North America instead. And then some offshoots went to Asia, some just moved north into the north of the United States and Canada. And so it's painting us a different picture of where these animals are coming from and how they're evolving and how they're changing over time." The fossils of the T.macraeensis were found in 1983 and have been on display in a New Mexico museum. With the new discovery, museums throughout the world may be studying the fossils of what they thought were T.rex remains to determine what they actually have are bones from a Tyrannosaurus macraeensis.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week we're speaking with Geoffrey Roche, Geoffrey Roche, Senior Vice President, National Health Care Practice of Core Education Services, a Public Benefit Corporation with a mission to support small and mid-sized institutions through innovative shared services.  Geoffrey shares an ecosystem approach to creating sustainable, equitable change in the healthcare and education systems. He says we're at an inflection point in the workforce world, and the root cause of high turnover, burnout and dissatisfaction is due in large part to problems of culture and inclusion (or lack thereof). We also discuss: The negative impact of larger organizations purchase smaller practices and expect the purchased practice to relinquish their culture Solutions for the very real problem of a need for leadership in healthcare (namely that it is already there and requires support and recognition beyond job titles) The possibility of starting an action-oriented organization like a think tank to create solutions to the many difficulties in healthcare Bio: Geoffrey M. Harrisburg University keeps tuition the same for a decade

College costs have been on a mostly upward trend for the last two decades. High tuition prices, housing, food, transportation, books and other school-related fees can add thousands of dollars to college expenses. According to U.S. News, In-state tuition and fees at public national universities have grown the most, increasing by over 210%. Although tuition has increased across the country, Harrisburg University has managed to keep their tuition the same for the past decade. Eric Darr, Harrisburg University's President, said the way his university did this is by keeping a goal of student accessibility in mind. "Universities can have lots of other goals but if your goal is to make your education as accessible as possible, then you'll do things and you'll priorities things and activities to keep costs constrained," Darr said. He said property management, health care providers, brokers, and fundraises help to make consistent tuition rates possible for the university as well. Darr said he believes one of the reasons students stay at his university is because of the consistent tuition rates. The tuition is $23,000 and he said, a family would pay on average, after  scholarships and grants about $3,000. Last year, the university gave more than $10 million in scholarships. "What it means to our students is that they have a chance, they have the opportunity to pay for a life changing career that they find fascinating," Darr said. "Am I able to promise that we're not going to ever raise tuition? No, I can't do that. But can I say we're going to work in the next ten years, as hard as we have over the last ten years, to keep education as affordable as possible. Absolutely, yes."Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

For 2022, we are adding to the Lisa glossary. This week, we are talking about the Organize 365® Research projects.  No matter when you begin your transformational journey (or when you need to reset or restart), this information will be here as a reference for you. Listen in as I teach you about the ideas and beliefs that are at the core of everything I teach and how I approach organizing. Several years ago, as I was writing the Organize 365® vision, I knew that I wanted to conduct research to bring to light the organizational needs of Americans. I want to be the go-to resource for knowledge about home and paper organization. I legitimately had no idea how to do research surveys and data analysis. Recently, I have been learning about the difference between market research and academic research. Organize 365® is now sponsoring academic-level study and third-party data collection backed by Harrisburg University.  Research always starts with a hypothesis — what you think the result will be. I wanted research results that showed that women are doing the majority of the work at home. But, that's now what we found. We have started to share our initial research findings. As I learn more about research, we really end up with more questions. One of the steps in research is to define every term used in study surveys. For example, you cannot ask a participant about “mental health” because that term is too broad and open to interpretation. However, you can ask about anxiety or depression.  When we developed the first survey, I needed to figure out how to define “housework.” The research questions ended up focusing on four different types of housework. Cleaning - Cleaning is related to the dwelling and covers any task a cleaning company would do. Learn more back inPodcast 422.  Tasks of Daily Living - These are tasks related to the person regardless of where they live. These are the tasks defined by Social Security Disability and include things like preparing food, consuming food, running errands, planning meals, and washing laundry. Learn more back in Podcast 424. Maintenance - is an optional housework activity where the property owner makes an additional infusion of money into their investment (property) to maintain and improve their property. In the long run, maintenance expenses increase the value of the initial investment. Learn more back in Podcast 428.  Organizing - is an optional housework activity where a person makes an investment of current time for a future return of time. This is completely optional and customizable. Time spent today organizing results in an exponential time in the future. Often this involves setting up systems of organization and can be applied to renters and owners. Learn more back in Podcast 426.    Literature Review  As part of academic research, researchers look at other studies done on similar topics. The Organize 365® review looked at the role of women in the 21st century home. As I mentioned above, I thought women were doing all of the housework. It turns out that everyone thinks they are doing the majority of the work at home. There is so much work to be done. Defining housework and recognizing these four areas makes housework feel overwhelming and never-ending. As women become more effective at articulating their role in housework, families will be able to better understand how much work is being done and proactively decide if the work should continue to be done at all.  Our next study survey has been completed and we are busy analyzing the results. Learn more back in Podcast 430. #myextra5  The Sunday Basket® consistently saves people at least five hours a week by getting organized and being proactive.Through organization, you get extra time, and we all need more time.
