Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"Ever since I was 7 years old and first "played" with the Interactive Media of Encarta 97 Encyclopedia World Music on my computer, I became captivated by the sounds of Trinidad's steel drums. These sounds, perhaps through cultural associations, filled me with absolute joy. In the naive imagination of a 7-year-old Peruvian girl, the Caribbean was portrayed as a paradise brimming with life and carnival vibes. As a young girl just starting her percussion workshop at school, I dreamed of playing in a live steel pan band. "As I delved deeper into the history of this instrument and learned about the colonization stories behind it, my perspective began to shift. On the one hand, working with recordings of steel drum music still evokes fond memories of an ever-happy past shaped by its presence in pop culture. Conversely, as a migrant, I felt compelled to share the stories behind the waves of migration from colonized lands to those of the colonizers.  "Now, using sample technologies from DAWs I can play along with this live steel drum band. I resonate emotionally and critically with the desire to preserve one's traditional culture, especially coming from a migrant background in the land of the colonizers. Despite facing structural racism and other forms of violence, I admire how the pan players infuse the grey skies with the vibrant colors of calypso and soca, even amidst the distant echoes and noises of Brixton's tube station." Steel drums in Brixton reimagined by Ale Borea. Part of the Migration Sounds project, the world's first collection of the sounds of human migration.  For more information and to explore the project, see https://www.citiesandmemory.com/migration Sunil060902, CC BY-SA 3.0 , via Wikimedia Commons

In our latest episode, Rick and Kaleem dive into a multifaceted conversation with Jeff Frick, the Founder and Principal of Menlo Creek Media and host of the "Turn the Lens" and "Work 20XX" podcasts.A distinguished professional with experience at major companies like Mitsubishi and Intel, Jeff is a remote work visionary! He draws inspiration from his extensive experience with "the Cube," where he conducted thousands of interviews at tech conferences, underscoring the importance of natural conversation over scripted responses. For him, digital engagement emphasizes the crucial difference between reach and engagement. Genuine engagement, which requires time, effort, and meaningful interactions with the community, is far more valuable than broad reach that can be bought through ads.The undeniable evolution of video production and the significance of transcripts in making video content searchable and accessible are clear. In Jeff's current area of expertise, it is evident that content should be planned with a focus on evergreen topics rather than fleeting news to ensure it remains relevant and useful over time.Content creators today can align their work with social media algorithms to enhance visibility and engagement. The goal should be building a real community and leveraging the algorithm's ability to connect like-minded individuals. Jeff stresses the importance of authentic interaction in this process, as he builds his projects only this way!Regarding the evolution of remote work, its current state, and its future, Jeff focuses on the transformative period of 2020, when companies were forced to adopt remote work due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The outdated mindset of some managers who believe physical presence is necessary to monitor employees' work is a retrograde notion. The shift towards asynchronous work and the use of digital tools are fueling the next steps of the future of work, particularly the consumerization of IT! For Jeff, the path forward is clear. Even with the recurring theme of "return to office" initiatives, the trend is moving towards more flexible, team-level agreements on work arrangements, emphasizing management based on objectives rather than tasks. Society never reverts to its past state, so new companies, unburdened by traditional office expenses, will likely outperform incumbents. Wall Street will pressure older companies to justify their expenses compared to more efficient newcomers. Younger generations, accustomed to remote work and digital tools, will drive these changes. From the specifics of media production to broader themes of digital engagement and the future of work, this conversation is insightful and useful for everyone remote! Jeff's views highlight the changing nature of media and the increasing importance of authentic engagement and meaningful discussions in a digital age. Tune in, give it a listen, and connect with our guest on all his platforms. It was a pleasure, Jeff!Learn more about Jeff:Jeff's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jefrick/Turn The Lens Podcast: https://www.turnthelenspodcast.com/Work 20XX Podcast: https://www.work20xx.com/

Michael Rich, author of The Mediatrician's Guide, joins us to explain why we must move beyond fear of “screen time” to have more nuanced conversations with teens about finding balance, meaning and ethics in their digital lives. If you've enjoyed Talking to Teens, we'd love if you could leave us a five-star rating, and if you have time, a review! Full Show NotesTeens today have never known a world without smartphones, social media, and round-the-clock internet access. As digital devices become more and more ingrained into every aspect of their lives, it's only natural for parents to worry about the impact all this technology might have.We often hear panicked stories about social media causing depression or video game addiction destroying kids' attention spans. It makes us want to snatch the screens out of teens' hands completely! But is going cold turkey really the best approach? To help parents navigate the digital age, we're talking to Dr. Michael Rich, an expert on kids and media. Dr. Rich is an associate professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and the founder and director of the Clinic for Interactive Media and Internet Disorders at Boston Children's Hospital. He's also the author of a new book called The Mediatrician's Guide: A Joyful Approach to Raising Healthy, Smart, Kind Kids in a Screen Saturated World. As both a pediatrician and a former filmmaker, Dr. Rich has a unique perspective on why we should move past fear-based thinking when it comes to kids and technology.Rethinking "Screen Time"Trying to simply limit screen time is an outdated way of thinking, says Dr. Rich. Screens are so embedded into every part of life that trying to quantify daily use is irrelevant. Instead of counting minutes spent staring at a device, Dr. Rich encourages intentionality. This means being mindful, balanced and present in how we interact with technology.Dr. Rich coins these practices the “killer B's.” Being mindful means understanding how device use displaces other activities, while being balanced means taking regular screen breaks. Most importantly, being present while using devices prevents us from missing out on real world connections. Trying to upgrade from texting to calling to in-person interactions is key.Looking Below Problematic BehaviorsIt's easy to blame devices themselves for issues like addiction or bullying. However, Dr. Rich explains that problematic digital behaviors are usually symptoms of underlying issues like ADHD, anxiety, depression or autism spectrum disorders. Taking away teens' access without addressing root causes may make problems worse.Dr. Rich notes that teens often see their devices as tools that help them cope with or avoid difficulties in their lives. Complete removal can heighten their distress. Instead, identifying and properly treating adolescents' mental health is key to curbing unhealthy digital habits.Fostering Digital WellnessRather than seeing devices as inherently bad, Dr. Rich focuses on how we can use them for good. Social platforms and interactive games actually have huge potential for building community, creativity and emotional skills. However, teens need guidance on using digital spaces ethically. Dr. Rich encourages parents to model intentional digital wellness and have open conversations about pitfalls like compare/despair thinking or internet rabbit holes. Promoting self-awareness and balance helps teens build healthy lifelong technology habits.Follow us on Social Media! We're @talkingtoteens on Instagram and TikTok

In this episode of Chasing the Insights, I talk to marketing strategist Anne Laffin. Anne talks to us about messaging and strategy. Anne Laffin is an innovative marketer, problem solver, strategist, and content creator that helps entrepreneurs and founders grow and amplify the inspiring work they bring to the world. Her ‘in the trenches' mentality comes from a 20-year career working with a variety of companies, large and small, in the market research, financial services, and animal health industries. But Anne didn't find my true passion until successfully creating, running, and growing the marketing department of a Series A funded fintech company. Anne loved the startup vibe so much that she decided to start Fin Marketing, (the name by the way plays off her last name and her love for water) Anne's consulting firm for early-stage startups. Long before any of those things happened, however, Anne received a B.A. in Communication from Villanova University (Go Cats!) and received an M.S. in Interactive Media from Quinnipiac University which laid the foundation for the work she does.

I'm a problem solver, strategist, and content creator that helps entrepreneurs and founders grow and amplify the inspiring work they bring to the world. That means I dig in and work along side you to figure out the tools, strategy, and messaging you need to make the dream a reality. My ‘in the trenches' mentality comes from a 20-year marketing career working with a variety of companies, large and small, in the market research, tech, financial services, and animal health industries. But I didn't find my true passion until I became employee 6 at a Series A funded fintech startup, successfully creating, running, and growing the marketing department. I loved the startup vibe so much that I decided to start Fin Marketing, (the name plays off my last name and my love for water) a marketing consultancy for early-stage startups. And now I've had the pleasure of working with dozens of startups from pre-seed to Series A...each one different...each one oddly similar. Long before any of those things happened, however, I received a B.A. in Communication from Villanova University (Go Cats!) and received an M.S. in Interactive Media from Quinnipiac University which laid the foundation for the work we'll do together.
