Sam Smith was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012 yet he's still writing about the Chicago Bulls and the NBA. He's 75 and recoils when you mention the word retirement. But Smith's career hasn't all been about basketball. He was a news reporter in his earlier days regaling about his very first day with a wire service in Washington, D.C.. he was assigned to interview Henry Kissinger! He also covered Watergate and the then momentous Camp David Accords, the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt!Smith eventually wound up at the Chicago Tribune and after 8 years of being a news reporter and business columnist, he turned to sports and eventually began covering the Chicago Bulls, something he's done for the last 35 years with both the Tribune and the team's website . In part two of this podcast Smith also discusses his upbringing in New York City, his passion with the Knicks, a directionally challenged encounter with Larry Bird and his rather biting sense of humor.“Tell me a story I don't know”is presented by Mr. Duct (mrductcleaning.com) and the book, “Tell me a story I don't know: Conversations with Chicago sports legends is now available for pre order on Amazon books.Make sure to follow/subscribe to the Last Word on Sports Media podcast feed on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Spreaker, Google, etc.And stay engaged with the conten at www.lastwordonsports.com/podcasts

Sam Smith has witnessed just about every Chicago Bulls game since 1987. As a beat reporter for the Chicago Tribune and now covering the team for its website, Smith has chronicled the exploits of Michael Jordan, Derrick Rose and some of their big names in the game. He's also written 5 books including three on Jordan. As for having remarkably close contact for the magical 90s Bulls? “On every flight I either sat with Phil Jackson, Johnny Bach and Tex Winter.” This trio of coaches helped lead the Bulls to six titles in 8 seasons but it was Jordan who got the headlines. Smith wrote three books on him including the New York Times best seller, “The Jordan Rules.” “I remember when the Jordan Rules came out it was kind of controversial but I had a good relationship with Jordan.”Smith is one of the sport's most respected journalists witness how some players and coaches have come to him to write stories, including the late Kobe Bryant during the time when he admitted to having an affair.Smith says he's just the conduit to his readers and that's exactly what he is. But he's managed to gain unbridled respect from not only those who have read his stories but to those he was writing about. In part one of this fascinating podcast, Smith also delves into his relationship with both Jordan and Rose, the disliked but misunderstood Jerry Krause who helped build the 6 time championship teams and a very amusing recollection of a golf game he had with Jordan.Tell me a story I don't know, conversations with Chicago sports legends is now available for pre order on Amazon books and will be released in Mid November. This experience was the last one. I don't trust health care in America. The healthcare system doesn't care about black men like me. Just like this country and some of my relatives. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/diaryofamadblackman/message
The SEC has won a lot of national championships in the BCS/College Football Playoff era, a lot more than the Big Ten but the SEC is a regional conference. Even with the additions of Oklahoma and Texas, most of the league's fans and alums live in the southeastern part of the country. The Big Ten has alumni in all 50 states and the SEC is not even close in the national distribution of alums like the Big Ten. It's not that there are not alums of SEC schools living in Phoenix. It's just that there are a lot more alums of Big Ten schools living in New York, Los Angeles, Chicao, Phoenix, Denver and on and on.
"Blood In Blood Out" didn't just open our eyes to an undiscovered crime epic, this 1993 drama changed the way Gene talks, the way Big D watches film, and the way Ash plots her stabbings. Whether you first saw this love letter to East Los Angeles on DVD or through a mayonnaise-smeared YouTube screen, "Blood In Blood Out" hit you hard with its graphic violence, unexpected laughs, promising cast, and surprise sexuality. The action wasn't exactly "Heat," but it sure was fun to watch. And who could forget those plot twists spanning a three-hour runtime? It was like The Chicano Godfather. In this episode, the Shat Crew discusses who would last longest in prison, how far family obligations go, and whether Damian Chapa ruined the movie or was the only man alive who could play Miklo Velka.

The recording of that night got lost, but I adapted my story from that night into a personal essay audio piece for the show. On today's episode of Loud & Clear, Brian Becker and John Kiriakou are joined by Massoud Shadjareh, the founder of the Islamic Human Rights Commission.Clashes continued on the border between Turkey and Syria, despite the fact that the two sides were supposed to have come to a five-day ceasefire agreement yesterday. Kurdish officials said that the Turkish military continues to shell civilian targets along the border, and that the Turkish army bombed a hospital in Ras al-Ain. A strike by Chicao teachers entered its second day today, and there are no prospects for a quick resolution. Teachers aren’t looking just for a pay raise. They’re looking for bold, transformative changes, including more affordable housing in the city for students and teachers. The city, however, says that the teachers’ demands are too much, and that it prefers to address some issues outside the bargaining process. Chicago Teachers Union member and activist Nick Stender joins the show. The British Parliament will be in session tomorrow, its first Saturday session in 37 years, to debate and vote on Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal and selected amendments. If the plan passes with no amendments, the UK will leave the EU. If it passes with amendments, Johnson will have to ask for an extension to negotiate a new deal. If the plan fails, Johnson will have to ask for an extension to head off a no-deal Brexit. Brian and John speak with Neil Clark, a journalist and broadcaster whose work has appeared in The Guardian, The Week, and Morning Star. A general strike in the semi-autonomous Spanish region of Catalonia has brought Barcelona and its environs to a complete stop. Tens of thousands of protestors are marching in opposition to a Spanish Supreme Court decision to incarcerate the leaders of Catalonia’s independence movement. Are Catalonians headed for another standoff with the Madrid government? Dick Nichols, the correspondent for Spain and Catalonia for Green Left Weekly, joins the show. It’s Friday! So it’s time for the week’s worst and most misleading headlines. Brian and John speak with Steve Patt, an independent journalist whose critiques of the mainstream media have been a feature of his site Left I on the News and on twitter @leftiblog, and Sputnik producer Nicole Roussell. Friday is Loud & Clear’s weekly hour-long segment The Week in Review, about the week in politics, policy, and international affairs. Today they focus on the Turkish invasion of Syria, the impeachment probe, and the possible breakthrough in UK-EU negotiations over Brexit. Brian and John speak with Jim Kavanagh, the editor of thepolemicist.net whose most recent article is “The Empire Steps Back: Trump Withdraws From Syria – Impeachment Now Possible,” and Sputnik News analysts and producers Walter Smolarek and Nicole Roussell.

We're not sure what the odds are of two Nashville chefs turning up in New York City on the same day, but somehow they did, and we were lucky to book them both for back-to-back interview sessions. First up: Chopped judge and prolific chef and restaurateur Maneet Chauhan takes us through her life and career, from her Indian childhood to her culinary training at the Culinary Institute of America to chef gigs in Chicago and the Tri-State area and ultimately to a home and success in Nashville. Then Andy Little narrates his singular career, which took him from Pennsylvania Dutch country to the Inn at Little Washington to other jobs before ultimately settling in Nashville and opening Josephine restaurant, currently in its fifth year. (Special thanks to The Mermaid Inn for providing us a space for these interviews.) Andrew Talks to Chefs is powered by Simplecast.

Beast Barnett is back on Tuesday night to bring you his power party for the second time. His discourse about hot dogs being sandwhiches has turned into the most heated debate in the country today. Will more people chime in on this issue? He's also coming off a trip to Chicao via a train which will probably get mentioned. How much negativity will Any Petition Jonak try to spread this week? Will QT be running track as he calls into the show? Find out on Tuesday night.
Another solid episode secured more praise from the fans even though it ended with a super fans nightmare scenario. No one seems to be buying the medical evacuation reference at the end of the episode. Several folks think it is only a matter of time before Pete gets burned by the Abi fire. Many continue to cling to the hope that a merge will save Denise and Malcolm, and several of us continue to enjoy Cookies. For each episode, we provide 3 podcasts: an episode recap, an interview with the castoff, and a chance for Survivor fans like yourself to sound off on what you saw and how you think the castaways are fairing in the game. Twenty four fans shared their thoughts on episode 4 and predictions for what we'll see next. We want to thank and acknowledge everyone who contributed to another great Listener Feedback show.
