Welcome to this week's blog post accompanying Episode 632 of The Veg Grower Podcast. In this episode, Richard shares what's been happening on the allotment and in the kitchen garden during mid-November, tackles a few tricky areas, takes us through pruning summer raspberries, and explains why bare-root fruit trees can save you a fortune. Allotment Update - Tackling problem areas After a very wet Saturday, the weather dried up enough for a productive session on the allotment. Mid-November brings a noticeable shift: fewer people around, shorter days, and trees only now beginning to drop their leaves thanks to the mild autumn. Tackling Problem Areas Richard focuses on a few tricky spots this week: The top boundary alongside an abandoned neighbouring plot, where brambles and tall weeds always creep across. Only so much can be done until the plot is re-let, but winter tidying keeps it under control. The asparagus bed, now fully died back. Richard: Cleared weeds around the crowns Added homemade compost Layered on seaweed from the local beach (with permission) Finished with straw from the potato bedsAll to give the asparagus and rhubarb a strong start into spring. Under the gooseberry bushes, where thick bramble growth has taken hold. After cutting them back to the base: A few low gooseberry branches were removed for access Some bramble roots were dug out The plan now is regular hoeing to stay on top of regrowthIt's part of a longer-term approach to improve the area while keeping things mostly no-dig. Kitchen Garden Update - Pruning raspberries Back home, the focus is on pruning summer raspberries. Pruning Summer Raspberries Summer-fruiting raspberries fruit on second-year canes. So the job now is to: Cut the older, brown canes at ground level Keep the younger, greener first-year stems for next year's crop Richard uses a system where one side of the raspberry bed is first-year growth and the other is second-year, making pruning simple and repeatable. Autumn Raspberries The autumn raspberries are still fruiting and even flowering, so they'll be left until winter before being cut down. In the Greenhouse Things are still thriving: Tomatoes have now been cleared Habaneros, chillies, and aubergines are still fruiting Strawberry plants, citrus, grape and peach trees are now sheltered inside The Autopot system has performed brilliantly again Planning ahead for sowing chillies and aubergines in December/January to make the most of the long season Recipe of the Week: Habanero Honey Hot Sauce With so many chillies still producing, Richard shares a beautifully balanced homemade hot sauce. It works with any type of chilli and stores well in the fridge. The full recipe is available on the website. The Podding Shed: Bare-Root Fruit Trees It's the perfect season for bare-root fruit trees — usually available from November to February — and they're one of the best ways to save money when expanding your fruit patch. Why Choose Bare-Root? Often less than half the price of potted trees Much easier to transport Establish extremely well when planted while dormant Ideal for gardeners on a budget Looking After Them Soak roots for 24 hours before planting If you can't plant immediately, pot temporarily Get them into the ground while the soil is still warm Come spring, they bounce into life with fresh growth Richard also mentions his chosen tree for the year — a Cornish Gold pear, grown especially for juicing. Where has everyone been on UConn QB Joe Fagnano? We've mentioned him a little bit on the show, but even now he's still not getting much NFL Draft praise, despite leading the Huskies to a surprising 7-3 record this year with these stats: 2,840 pass yards (2nd in the country); 25 TDs (3rd in the country); and 0 INTs. He's also throwing at a 68.8% completion rate Where's the NFL Draft praise? He's 6'4”, 225 pounds and has a good arm…where's Mel Kiper? The relentless shifts towards AI powered everything being everywhere in the digital environment are accelerating and the evolution of digital marketing services is starting to keep pace. Previsible, which recently bought the legendary agency Internet Marketing Ninjas, announced the acquisition of Googlite founded data-driven search agency Improove. Google introduces Opal, an AI tool that it claims can create scalable content and apps for search campaigns as a Google Labs project. This contradicts virtually everything Google's previously said about using AI generated content at scale so it might be Google moving into the search marketing space on purpose or it could be one part of the Googleverse running ahead of another without first making sure their narratives aligned with each other. Meanwhile, we've learned how much it will cost for Gemini to white label itself to Apple's Siri, $1Billion per year. Apple will pay Google a cool $1B to have Gemini act in the background with Siri's familiar tone in the foreground. This while Google is accused in a civil suit of using Gemini to track private communications of users in email, messaging apps and video-conferencing sessions. The case, Thele v. Google LLC, 25-cv-09704, is being heard in a district court in San Jose. Google is also defending its algorithmic actions targeting parasitic SEO programs after the EU announced an investigation into a complaint that Google intentionally demoted several news sites in search results. It may be a case of abuse of a parasitic complaints process. Yann LeCun, chief AI scientist at Meta is openly talking about quitting and founding his own startup. LeCun has said he no longer believes in the long term viability of LLMs. Canadian Bitcoin mining giant Bitfarms is winding down its energy on grinding out bitcoins to focusing on becoming an AI data center powerhouse. NOTICE: This weekly show is now part of the "Happy Hour with John Gaskins" daily podcast, which you can find at SiouxFallsLive.com, MidwestSportsPlus.com, and most podcast platforms like the one you find here! So, if you enjoy the topics Matt & John cover, you'll get those topics, plus relevant local guests, every Monday through Thursday on Happy Hour... so we highly recommend you check that out! You can see it in the changing color of the leaves, and then how quickly they are falling off the trees. You can feel it in the chill of the air in the mornings, evenings, and sometimes all day. As November — which for those of us up here in the north means early winter — nears, the weather and ever-shedding trees represent the cold, harsh reality of winter drawing near, and the cold, harsh reality of some football teams' goals slipping away. South Dakota State no longer looks like a national title contender, at least in the health they are in. North Dakota State exposed that. South Dakota not only no longer looks like a national title contender they were projected to be by most FCS experts in the preseason, the Coyotes look less and less like even an FCS playoffs team. Their failure to score more than 20 points in all but three of nine games exposed that. But that's how things look now. Both the Jackrabbits and Coytes have November to change those narratives — four regulasr seaosn games each to flip the script. The margin of error is slimmer for both. The depth of both teams is thinning, too (as injuries tend to smother all teams at all levels by this time of year). On a cold day requiring flannel for John Gaskins and a hooded sweatshirt for Matt Zimmer, the two "Nobody's Listening Anyway" hosts require just a tiny extra dose of alcoholic nourishment to adjust to the temperatures and impending winter, not to mention to digest and unpack both what the SDSU and USD seasons have become and still could be. The cold, harsh reality of the Jacks is the kind of players that led them to national titles in 2022 and '23 — Mark Gronowski, Tucker Kraft, Isaiah Davis, Pierre Strong, the Janke twins, and a host of pro-level 605 Hogs and defenders — are not walking through that door, and the injuries of Chase Mason, Lofton O'Groske and Chase Van Tol made winning an MVFC of national title even harder. But, does that mean the Jacks' chances of accomplishing something special with a brand new coaching staff and mostly-turned-over roster are toast? The cold, harsh reality of the Yotes is they struggle to score points, which makes it hard to win games against teams that aren't the worst in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Presumably, USD must beat three consecutive top-tier league teams to reach the playoffs. But does that mean we can stick a fork in the chances of a third consecutive postseason berth in Vermillion? Fire up the Budweiser and add a shot of Rumple Minze. There's a lot of brutal reality football to talk about, and that includes the latest bumpy ride Kalen DeBoer's Alabama took in the SEC, the make-you-hurl Brian Kelly experience at LSU that is mercifully over, and the broader conversation of all these major college teams sending their head coaches packing — with suitcases full of dozens of millions of dollars in buyout money — before the leaves start falling. Zim and John cover all that, plus the surest sign that autumn is ending: The World Series, state football playoffs, and Halloween. Is Shohei Ohtani already the greatest baseball player of all time? Are Brandon Valley and Lincoln on a collision course for back-to-back meetings in the Dakota Dome in Mid-November? Should an almost 50-year-old man still be dressing up for Halloween? You'll hear the answers, but spoiler alert — like the local college football discussions, it's complicated.
