--Dr. Andy Little, Program Director for the ER at AdventHealth Central Florida discusses with Julie Soukup, host of Take 1: Patient Podcast, his experience recording patient interactions for better communication and patient education. He shares that he has been recording discharge instructions since 2017, particularly for pediatric patients and those with complex diagnoses. A small study at Doctor's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, revealed providers' concerns about being recorded despite acknowledging patients' right to do so. Dr. Little emphasizes the benefits of recording, such as reducing misunderstandings and improving patient outcomes. He has not faced any legal issues from recording and believes it empowers patients to make informed decisions about their care.

This week we're sharing a podcast we did onsite at ACOEP23 with EM Over Easy Podcast's Dr. Andy Little. Hope you enjoy! In this episode we discuss our personal moral injury journeys far before the COVID pandemic. Additionally we cover: coaching teaches the same mindset tools commonly used in professional athletics and high level business but glaringly missing in medicine perfectionism isn't helpful in the ED peer coaching can fill a critical void for physician support the importance of recognizing your value the importance of being realistic about what is and what isn't in your control so many times the thing you're beating yourself up about isn't your fault don't downplay the good that you're doing you're worthy inherently, and deserving of wellbeing - never listen to the shame gremlins your coaching journey is fully dependent on the results you want for yourself and is considered skill building rather than mental health support there is tremendous value, as team leaders, for EM docs to have coaching support to function optimally over the span of their careers Quotable: "...the biggest piece is knowing my own value and knowing what is in my control and what is not in my control, and always having my own back. I always know that I show up and do the very best job I can do. And I will never, ever punish myself for thing that happen that are out of my control. And if I make a mistake, I'll say, okay, how can I avoid that in the future? But I am never going to rail on myself ever again." - Laura Cazier, MD EM Over Easy Links: Twitter Podcast Website References: Katrina Ubell's Podcast The Star Thrower Couldn't join us for our FREE CLASS how to work in the dumpster fire of healthcare without getting burned? Connor Bice, Director of Operations for the Arch Collaborative and Andy Little, EM Physician in Central Florida, speak on clinician turnover and how it's related to the EHR experience. Connor speaks on data collected, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, which shows a 20% increase in clinician turnover in the last 2 years. Andy touches on the hardships on how organizations have struggled to train new users on how to properly use the EHR system, many don't know it well enough to be able to document core requirements appropriately. He speaks on how there are more regulations from government today when it comes to documenting, this adds to the burden of taking even more time in documenting each day. “It's about the patient,” Andy says and it's one of the few things you can do for them. He speaks on how having 24-hour support is very helpful, especially during high peak volume times. The challenge then is to use the EHR as a solution and not allow it to become a problem. It's important to invest in creating dot phrases, and macros. It may take 20+ hours to do so, however it will make a shift that much better because the EHR experience was better.

With excitement allow me to introduce to you today's guest, Chef Andy Little. Chef Little came to Nashville in 2013 by way of central Pennsylvania where he grew up on traditional Pennsylvania Dutch cooking. After realizing “orchestral musician” was not his career path, Little took up a server position to pay his way through school and discovered his love of the restaurant kitchen. Little graduated from the Culinary Institute of America and began his rising career in the industry first working under Patrick O'Connell at The Inn at Little Washington before a stint at Pennsylvania's Evermay-on-the-Delaware, which eventually led him back to his hometown to spearhead the fine dining restaurant at The Sheppard Mansion. Now a 2017 and 2018 James Beard Award semifinalist for Best Chef Southeast, Little helms the kitchen at popular restaurant Josephine, where Pennsylvania Dutch roots meet Southern hospitality for a distinct and thoughtful experience beloved by guests.
