We're back with a new episode of Sound Speed Action as we continue our countdown to Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning. Up next is what feels like an amazing reset for the series — Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011).This is where the franchise really starts to take off. The quality of action and entertainment jumps several levels in this installment. You get the brilliant work of director Brad Bird (The Iron Giant) as well as the first steps of writer Christopher McQuarrie stepping into the Mission world (be on the lookout for more from him soon…), making this an explosive (if sometimes uneven) hit of a movie! The cast brings a lot of fun: Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt, raising both his action and comedy game. Simon Pegg's Benji is no longer just the computer guy behind the desk — he's out in the field as a great agent, delivering some fantastic moments. That includes hilarious scenes alongside Cruise and newcomer Jeremy Renner. On the podcast, we debate whether Renner fully fits the mold of these films — what do you think? Paula Patton as Agent Carter (not that Marvel Agent Carter) kicks ass and is a blast to watch as part of the IMF team. Even the smaller roles are memorable, including Tom Wilkinson as the IMF Secretary, Léa Seydoux as assassin Sabine Moreau, and Ving Rhames (he's in it for only 39 seconds, but listen for a great bit about what Rhames pulled off in this movie).Of course, the movie has its flaws: a pretty thin villain character (okay, maybe these movies really aren't about their villains…) and a major tonal shift once the action moves to India. But ultimately, this chapter reignites the series with a much-needed burst of energy, setting the stage for what promises to be a thrilling new era for the back half of the franchise. Let's go! We'll be back soon with more to share — enjoy this one, and let us know your thoughts.Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol is available to stream now on Prime Video and Paramount Plus. It's also available to rent or buy on all major platforms. This is a public episode. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

If Michael Bay movies are orange juice, "Con Air" is orange-juice concentrate—loaded with stars, explosions and plot holes. What else would you expect from Shat The Movies commissioner extraordinaire Frank F? Simon West's directorial debut had the Shat Crew scratching their heads. The geography makes no sense. The crime makes no sense. The courts make no sense. Even prison had Dick and Gene confounded.  But there was no mystery to the entertainment factor of this summer blockbuster. Cartoon bad guys, over-the-top action sequences and some of 1997's hottest actors make "Con Air" a standout movie ... even if it isn't a particularly good one. This is our final stand-alone failure story of the season. We added this story series to this particular season because we found that a number of faculty and staff are quietly telling students their own stories of failure. We want to amplify and encourage this thoughtful practice. With this episode, we're going straight to the top of our college to our current college president, Dr. Ronald Rhames. We hear the story of a college freshman, here at MTC, who is taking the required English writing course, as many of our students do. And when he received his first marked essay back, the grade was absolutely not what he expected or hoped for. In today's story, we'll hear about how the young Dr. Rhames, faced with a failing grade, was at a decision point right at the start of his college career. We'll hear him narrate his choices and the choices of those teaching him. Dr. Rhames announced this past Fall that he will be retiring in the Summer of 2024 so we're again speaking to someone looking back at an almost-complete career. The end of the episode also features information about support the CTE offers our community to tell our failure stories to better support our students.

We're celebrating Hot Sauce Steve's birthday with the 1998 hit that marked Adam Sandler's transition to romantic comedies: "The Wedding Singer." In many ways, "The Wedding Singer" was a sign of things to come for Sandler: co-starring with a possibly concussed Drew Barrymore, more subdued roles, nostalgia and mom-safe jokes. But there were still flashes of the Saturday Night Live legend we saw in "Billy Madison" and "Happy Gilmore": the 90ish-minute runtime, the non-sequiturs, and the cameos.  Weddings are the topic of the week in this episode, with the Shat Crew discussing pre-wedding jitters, the cost of weddings, and how much of a role the groom should play. We also discuss Adam Sandler's singing, whether Linda got a bad rap, what constitutes cheating, and how well we can spot a freak in the sheets when we seem her in the streets. To top it all off, Ving Rhames calls in to discuss "Blood In Blood Out" and Big D gets passionate about vanilla ice cream. "Blood In Blood Out" didn't just open our eyes to an undiscovered crime epic, this 1993 drama changed the way Gene talks, the way Big D watches film, and the way Ash plots her stabbings. Whether you first saw this love letter to East Los Angeles on DVD or through a mayonnaise-smeared YouTube screen, "Blood In Blood Out" hit you hard with its graphic violence, unexpected laughs, promising cast, and surprise sexuality. The action wasn't exactly "Heat," but it sure was fun to watch. And who could forget those plot twists spanning a three-hour runtime? It was like The Chicano Godfather. The Filmlosophers, Eddie Villanueva, Chad Riley and Spencer Williams, race against time to face a series of challenges head-on with this week's review of Mission Impossible: Fallout (2018). Tom Cruise reprises his role as Ethan Hunt in the film franchise's sixth installment, alongside a slew of returning performers including Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Michelle Monaghan, Sean Harris and Alec Baldwin. The action thriller is filled to the brim with breathtaking stunt sequences and features only a few new faces - Henry Cavill, Angela Bassett, Vanessa Kirby, and Henry Cavill's mustache - but it may just be too full with a runtime of nearly two and a half hours. How does Fallout fare in comparison with the previous five films, and does it succeed in extending the narrative of the franchise in a meaningful way? Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to listen in and find out. This message will self-destruct in five seconds...

Actual Anarchy Podcast - AnCap Movie Reviews from a Rothbardian Perspective

Well, it's finally come to this. Robert's number one favoritist movie of all time, Quentin Tarantino's 1994 masterpiece, Pulp Fiction. The movie that revived a few careers and let Samuel L. Jackson rip. Jules Winnfield and Vincent Vega are two hitmen who are out to retrieve a suitcase stolen from their employer, mob boss Marsellus Wallace. Wallace has also asked Vincent to take his wife Mia out a few days later when Wallace himself will be out of town. Butch Coolidge is an aging boxer who is paid by Wallace to lose his next fight. The lives of these seemingly unrelated people are woven together comprising of a series of funny, bizarre and uncalled-for incidents. We do our best to parse this one that has so much to unpack.  It's a very well done movie that stands up over the course of time.   Show notes and more at: www.actualanarchy.com/39 Thank you for joining us on this episode of the Actual Anarchy Podcast!
