Today, we're discussing the tragic murder of Austin Metcalf — a case that's not just heartbreaking but deeply revealing of a larger cultural crisis we need to address head-on. I'll be sharing my raw thoughts on what happened, and more importantly, having the uncomfortable (but necessary) conversation surrounding crime statistics in the black community. If we're ever going to see real change — fewer senseless killings, safer neighborhoods, and stronger families — then we have to stop tiptoeing around the truth. It's time to talk about why these patterns keep repeating and what cultural shifts must happen to break the toxic and deadly cycle. This isn't about hate — it's about accountability, truth, and the fight for life, stability, and genuine justice.—https://policecoffee.com/?gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAACG7qmLTSF8TidU6uJpGkHMYzxsnd&gclid=Cj0KCQjwqcO_BhDaARIsACz62vPh4GA_6w_PdX8w4PW0sRhPD76KOyhYBmiEOdpiLXHP1G10c9kaPMEaAkK-EALw_wcB

Over the last few years, I have returned more often than I could have imagined to the work of Reinhold Niebuhr and his vision of Christian Realism. Between the rise of Trump, growing disappointment in Biden, and inaction on the most pressing issues... to name a few... my inherent optimism in the democratic experiment has waned. So, I decided to have Dr. Kevin Carnahan on the podcast to unpack Christian Realism and how this particular theological lens could help me wrestle with my growing disease. Kevin Carnahan is Professor of Philosophy and Religion at Central Methodist University in Fayette, MO. He recently stepped down after five years of service as co-editor of the Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics, is the former president of The Niebuhr Society, and author of multiple books and articles on religion, ethics, and politics. He lives in Columbia, MO with his wife and two daughters. Katie is joined by Beth Jamieson, host of the "Well Read Life" Podcast to talk ALL about Kristin Lavransdatter by Sigrid Undset. This saga takes us through the tumult and trials of a woman's life in medieval Norway, from childhood until the end of her life. Despite so many falls from grace, this is a redemptive story, highlighting not only the power of the human spirit, but the absolute relentlessness of a loving and merciful God. We are HUGE fans of this book and go in depth in our conversation, covering sin and love and lust, motherhood and redemption and hope -- This episode DOES contain spoilers, so if you'd like to put a pause on it until you read the book, hop over to Beth's podcast for an introductory spoiler-free episode to introduce you to the novel and Sigrid Undset - read the book - then come back here to tune in! ENTER OUR BOOK GIVEAWAY HERE: https://www.aaronshamp.com/contest Over the last several years, we have repeatedly heard or said that this is a culturally divided age. Politics, culture, and even evangelicals appear to be more and more polarized over key moral issues. Societal disruption and breakdown are present all around our country. However, we might forget that this past decade is not the only time that Americans have been divided. The 1960s counter-culture was also filled with confusion, chaos, and deep divisions. Os Guinness returned to the podcast to discuss the re-release of his book The Dust of Death: The Sixties Counterculture and How It Changed America Forever. Os shares the story behind the book including his time at L'Abri with Francis Schaeffer. We discussed his analysis of the sixties counterculture and his position that he calls Christian Realism. Finally, Os helps us to think about how to move forward in this culture. Os Guinness (DPhil, Oxford) is the author or editor of more than thirty books, including The Dust of Death, The Call, Fool's Talk, Carpe Diem Redeemed, The Magna Carta of Humanity, Last Call for Liberty, Impossible People, Unspeakable, and Time for Truth. A frequent speaker and prominent social critic, he has addressed audiences worldwide from the British House of Commons to the U.S. Congress to the St. Petersburg Parliament. He is a senior fellow at the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics and was the founder of the Trinity Forum. Born in China to missionary parents, he is the great-great-great-grandson of Arthur Guinness, the Dublin brewer. After witnessing the climax of the Chinese revolution in 1949, he was expelled with many other foreigners in 1951 and returned to England where he was educated and served as a freelance reporter with the BBC. Since coming to the U.S. in 1984, he has been a guest scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Studies and a visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution. He was the lead drafter of the Williamsburg Charter, celebrating the First Amendment, and has also been senior fellow at the EastWest Institute in New York, where he drafted the Charter for Religious Freedom. He also co-authored the public school curriculum Living With Our Deepest Differences. Guinness has had a lifelong passion to make sense of our extraordinary modern world and to stand between the worlds of scholarship and ordinary life, helping each to understand the other—particularly when advanced modern life touches on the profound issues of faith. He lives with his wife, Jenny, in McLean, Virginia, near Washington, D.C. There is a beautiful mystery in the fact that we often think of certain novels and poems in terms of our experiences at the time we first read them. This is both appropriate and fascinating, especially when second and third readings of the same literature yield further layers of our experiences with them. We are reminded, then, that we are biographical creatures, storied creatures, and that stories, poems, and sagas do not only entertain us; they help to articulate and explain us. Today in August of 2021 the writer Walt Wangerin Jr. has just recently died. Wangerin, a Lutheran storyteller who received many of literature's highest awards, is best known for a series of fantasy books situated in a most unusual world—a farm that intersects with the meaning, the dangers, and the promises of everything. The first book in the series is called The Book of the Dun Cow. Dr. Garcia first read it at the recommendation of Jonathan Stark, his friend, a longtime teacher, and a ruling elder at Immanuel, the Presbyterian congregation Dr. Garcia served as pastor. He couldn't help but read this story as one nearly consumed with his own experiences of horror and pain in a very difficult time of pastoral labor. Nor could Wangerin, it turns out. Perhaps this is why this book has been precious to Dr. Garcia ever since, and yet it remains a compelling and worthwhile book in its own right, quite apart from ways this biographical sketch may or may not prove to disclose. But then, perhaps we should not hesitate to notice such things either, if our stories partake, purposefully, of the features of the story of everything precisely so we can be sure of the Creator's purposes at work in his creation.Despite its apparently comical setting (talking animals and the like), The Book of the Dun Cow is a profoundly serious book and--as Jonathan and Dr. Garcia both agree in today's conversation--it is not to be confused with a children's book. In its seriousness, though, it is also refreshing. It does better justice to the realities of sin, evil, and pain than so much of what the world offers—indeed, than the Church sometimes offer. This alone commands our attention. At long last, then, Greystone Conversations was pleased to sit with Jonathan Stark to talk a bit about one of our favorite topics: Wangerin's The Book of the Dun Cow. Thank you for sitting with us to listen in. We hope you will consider reading the book yourselves, of course, but would be quite content if we are all reminded by this story that the real world is more fantastic—in the literal sense of the word—than we could possibly imagine in our largely disenchanted age, and that good writing reminds us, even urgently, of reality's enchantment.
Christian Nationalism has revealed itself to be alive and strong over the past several years, perhaps no more than on January 6, 2021 when Jesus 2020 banners and crosses were on display at the insurrectionist storming of the Capitol. With a new President coming and Christian Nationalism on full display, how can disciples of King Jesus continue to be faithful over the next few years?
