Attorney George Smith is a highly respected and well-known attorney throughout the State of Alabama. As most attorneys in the state know George, I have known him by reputation, and this is really the first time for me to speak in depth with him. George is a graduate of the University of Alabama School of Law and he also received an LLM in tax law from the New York University School of Law. Following that, he clerked in Washington DC for a judge on the U.S. Tax Court for two years before returning back to Huntsville to start his law practice. George has practiced with large Alabama law firms throughout his career. He has been at Bradley since 2012. As you'll hear, even with his impressive background, George is easy to talk to and I can well imagine that his clients appreciate the skill and practicality he brings as he represents them. Since George has practiced in “big law” for his entire legal career, we also discussed a number of his friends and colleagues that are also very prominent lawyers in Alabama to include Pat Graves, Frank Caprio, Bartley Loftin, David Holt, Kevin Gray, Chris Hinson and Joe Ritch. I enjoyed getting to know George on this episode of the podcast and I think you will like his humble and up-tempo spirit!

He has founded several businesses in the legal industry, including two attorney recruiting companies. He has worked with dozens of law firms and corporate legal departments, and hundreds of attorneys across the country. Brock's companies have received numerous awards and recognition for success and growth, including Inc. 500 and Inc. 5000 awards for the fastest growing companies in America. He is a graduate of the University of Alabama School of Law, and Washington & Lee University. Listen to this informative Sharkpreneur episode with Richard Brock about how to recruit for law firms. Here are some of the beneficial topics covered on this week's show: - Why law firms row faster by acquiring attorneys with an established client base. - Why most law firms don't hire the talent they actually need. - How a client-first approach prioritizes law firm goals over quick placements. - How successful law firms have the right mix of marketing, outreach, and relationship building. - Why law firms need lateral hiring instead of simply recurring junior attorneys. Donald Trump is now the first American president convicted of a crime. The smooth trial process shows that — independent of the outcome — the U.S. justice system can still work, even with a powerful defendant. But full accountability seems far off. The federal courts, including the Supreme Court, have stalled Trump's prosecution for trying to overthrow the 2020 election and for misuse of classified documents and obstruction of justice. Listen to an expert discussion on how Trump's defense in the New York business records falsification trial, including Trumps' accusations of political motivations behind the charges, could serve as a blueprint in his other cases. My guest today is a is a Canadian American actor for video games, television and film. Born in Labrador in Canada, she soon moved to Alabama in the United States, where, as a teenager, she began working as a commercial voice over artist for radio. After graduating from Alabama School of Fine Arts, she took on voice roles to fund her dream of becoming a musician. Soon, however, the acting took over. After securing some roles in regional TV series, she moved to Los Angeles. There, a part in the cartoon ‘Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego?' brought her into the world of video games, where she quickly became one of the world's most sought-after performers. In 2011 the New Yorker described her as “a kind of Meryl Streep of the form.” Her roles, which number more than a hundred, include that of Samus Aran in the Metroid Prime Trilogy, Naomi Hunter in Metal Gear Solid, Commander Shepard in the Mass Effect games, and the character Ashe in Overwatch. Ethics and the Supreme Court are back (still?) in the news and in question. This hour, we are revisiting a show we did just over a year ago around the leaked draft of the Dobbs decision. In it we look at how the Supreme Court got so much power, why we have nine justices, how journalists cover the court, and the viability of proposed potential reforms. In Paris Hilton's documentary "This is Paris," she bravely shared her personal story of being sent to a boarding school in Utah that turned out to be abusive and traumatizing. Hilton's experience sheds light on a much larger issue of troubled teen camps that use unethical and abusive practices under the guise of providing therapy, recreational camp amenities, and care. But Paris Hilton's case is only one of many survivor stories that have come to light in recent years. The truth is that these institutions are doing anything but actually helping these children. So why is the government aiding in funding their operations? On this episode of Cut to the Chase: Podcast we discuss the troubling issue of the "exploited teen industry," which includes various institutions such as wilderness camps, boarding schools, and reformatory schools that claim to help troubled teens but have been found to engage in deceptive marketing practices and abuse. Our host, Gregg Goldfarb, invites attorney Caleb Cunningham to the show to talk about the harm caused by these facilities, including sexual abuse, torture, and even death, and the lack of regulation that allows these abuses to continue. In this episode: We highlight and bring awareness about the need for parents to be careful and informed when considering these facilities for their children. Cunningham discusses the legal actions being taken against the industry and what lawyers should know to properly represent clients in these cases. The financial incentives behind the industry, including public funds and private equity investments, the connection between government funding, and their promotion. It is imperative that we continue to raise awareness about this issue and demand accountability from those responsible for the mistreatment of vulnerable youth. No one deserves to endure the kind of abuse and trauma that Paris Hilton and many others have experienced. In 1939 the just-heard Mel Allen became the New York Yankees radio announcer. He was born in Birmingham, Alabama on February 14th, 1913. While attending the University of Alabama he became the public address announcer for the Crimson Tide football team. In 1933, when radio station WBRC asked Alabama coach Frank Thomas to recommend a new play-by-play announcer, he suggested Allen. Allen graduated from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1937. Shortly after he took a train to New York City for a week's vacation. While there, he auditioned for a staff announcer's job at CBS. CBS' top sportscaster, Ted Husing, had heard many Crimson Tide broadcasts. Allen was hired for forty-five dollars per week. Although he was calling Baseball, Allen continued to announce other shows on the Network. He was CBS announcer for the Duffy's Tavern pilot, which aired on Forecast July 30th, 1940. After Ruth and Gehrig retired, Joe DiMaggio became the next Yankee legend. The Yankees main rival, the Boston Red Sox, were led by fellow future Hall-of-Famer Ted Williams. Norman Corwin riffed on this rivalry during his production of “Between Americans”, for Screen Guild Theatre which aired the night of December 7th, 1941. Both players missed three seasons in the mid 1940s while at war. Ted Williams missed most of two more during the Korean conflict.

Episode At A Glance: This week, I am joined by my dear friend Mary Catherine Tomlinson and her newly married daughter, Marlee Martin. Marlee shares how they believe a prescription for birth control ultimately led to massive blood clots in her leg, lungs, and heart in the fall of 2021. In this episode, Marlee and Mary Catherine share their journey with Marlee's health, the details of her life-saving surgery, and how their faith in Christ carried them through it all. After Marlee's horrendous experience with birth control, she and her mother strive to educate young women on its dangers. Who Is Marlee Martin? Marlee Martin grew up in Birmingham and graduated from Briarwood Christian School in 2017. She then went on to college at Alabama University. After graduating from Alabama in 2021, Marlee started law school at The University of Alabama School of Law. Marlee married her husband, Jacob Martin on June 18, 2022. Marlee's Story: When she was sixteen, Marlee had a cyst removed from her ovaries. Since then, she has been on and off of birth control in order to balance her hormones and prevent future cysts. Her doctor put her on Yaz, one of the strongest and most dangerous forms of birth control on the market. Fast forward to September of 2021, and Marlee started experiencing pain and swelling in her right calf. She eventually went to get an Ultra Sound done on her leg, but the ER doctors told her they could not find anything. Marlee continued to experience pain in her leg, and after the pain spread up her leg she massaged it out with a foam roller. After that, she experienced being severely out of breath and a dramatic increase in her heart rate. When her heart rate reached 190, Marlee called 911 and went to the hospital. Finally, the doctors performed tests and realized that she had clots in her lungs, heart, and leg. Marlee was eventually transferred to UAB, where Dr. Ahmed performed life-saving surgery on her. A True Miracle: After Marlee was transferred to UAB, it was quickly determined that she needed surgery immediately. The doctors removed 36 inches of blood clots (pictured above) just from Marlee's knee to hip, along with many others. During the surgery, Marlee's heart stopped. Her doctor called for the life-saving machines to be prepped. However, something prompted her doctor to continue removing the clots from her heart as quickly as possible. This decision turned out to save Marlee's life, and her heart started beating right after. Marlee and her family know that this was God, directing the surgeon's hands and sparing her life. After the surgery, countless doctors called Marlee the "miracle girl" because they had only performed autopsies on people with her severity of clots. The Faith That Carried Them: Throughout this entire journey, Marlee and her family depended completely on the Lord to sustain them and comfort them. Days before Marlee's surgery, she journaled out a prayer proclaiming her trust in and submission to the Lord's sovereignty and goodness. Mary Catherine shared that Marlee's surgery showed them how truly trustworthy God is. She shared that as a parent there is always so much she can do for her children. However, during Marlee's surgery, she could do nothing but depend on God to perform a miracle. The Risks of Birth Control: After Marlee's experience, she and her family believe that these clots were caused by her birth control, Yaz. A study that Marlee found said that women who are on that particular birth control are three times more likely to encounter blood clots. When Marlee was first prescribed birth control, the doctor did not share the risks or possible side effects of the medication. Now, both Marlee and Mary Catherine strive to educate young women on these forms of dangerous birth control. Questions Answered In This Episode: What caused these massive blood clots? How did you first realize that something was "off" with your health? Why did these massive clots go unnoticed at first? How did birth control contribute to these blood clots? Where are you on your health journey today? How did your faith impact your journey?

Today's Flashback Friday is from episode 281 released last October 9, 2012. Jason Hartman has his mom back on the show to discuss her DIY property management/self-management strategies and one of her tenants who has occupying a property for 23 years - no vacancy! Then Jason interviews his Birmingham, Alabama Local Market Specialist (LMS) and talks to a caller/listener with some good real estate investing questions. Here's an excerpt from Wikipedia on this market: Birmingham is the largest city in Alabama. The city is the county seat of Jefferson County. The city's population was 212,237 according to the 2010 United States Census. The Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Area had a population of about 1,128,047 according to the 2010 Census, which is approximately one-quarter of Alabama's population. Birmingham was founded in 1871, during the post-Civil War Reconstruction period, through the merger of three pre-existing farm towns, notably, former Elyton. It grew from there, annexing many more of its smaller neighbors, into an industrial and railroad transportation center with a focus on mining, the iron and steel industry, and railroading. Birmingham was named for Birmingham, one of the major industrial cities of the United Kingdom. Many, if not most, of the original settlers who founded Birmingham were of English ancestry. In one writer's view, the city was planned as a place where cheap, non-unionized, and African-American labor from rural Alabama could be employed in the city's steel mills and blast furnaces, giving it a competitive advantage over industrial cities in the Midwest and Northeast. From its founding through the end of the 1960s, Birmingham was a primary industrial center of the South. The pace of Birmingham's growth during the period from 1881 through 1920 earned its nicknames The Magic City andThe Pittsburgh of the South. Much like Pittsburgh, Birmingham's major industries were iron and steel production, plus a major component of the railroading industry, where rails and railroad cars were both manufactured in Birmingham. In the field of railroading, the two primary hubs of railroading in the Deep South were nearby Atlanta and Birmingham, beginning in the 1860s and continuing through to the present day. The economy diversified during the later half of the twentieth century. Though the manufacturing industry maintains a strong presence in Birmingham, other businesses and industries such as banking, telecommunications, transportation, electrical power transmission, medical care, college education, and insurance have risen in stature. Mining in the Birmingham area is no longer a major industry with the exception of coal mining. Birmingham ranks as one of the most important business centers in the Southeastern United States and is also one of the largest banking centers in the United States. In addition, the Birmingham area serves as headquarters to one Fortune 500 company:Regions Financial. Five Fortune 1000 companies are headquartered in Birmingham. In the field of college and university education, Birmingham has been the location of the University of Alabama School of Medicine (formerly known as the Medical College of Alabama) and the University of Alabama School of Dentistry since 1947, and since that time, it has also become provided with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (founded circa 1969), one of three main campuses of the University of Alabama, and also with the private Birmingham-Southern College. Between these two universities and Samford University, the Birmingham area has major colleges of medicine, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, law, engineering, and nursing. Birmingham is home to three of the state's five law schools: Cumberland School of Law, Birmingham School of Law, and Miles Law School. Birmingham is also the headquarters of the Southeastern Conference, one of the major U.S. collegiate athletic conferences.
