Today's guest has had quite the whirlwind of a year! That entails the birth of a new baby, a marriage, a major location move and becoming a CEO after graduating Stanford's MBA program only four years ago. But for Christina Martinez, who majored in microbiology at Princeton as an undergraduate, only motherhood seems to be the biggest challenge. She quickly acclimated as CEO of Traject, a company that handles digital marketing needs for SMBs. She credits the people she works with for her ability to learn fast and manage tasks well. Christina says that by saying “yes” to new roles and challenges, rather than following a specific strict trajectory from one's college days, she accomplished things she had never envisioned and now greatly enjoys. Everyday, the women of Iriri make a 4 hours round trip walk to a "pond" to fill up a jug of muddy water, twice. This water is used to drink, cook, and if enough remains, maybe even clean. The trips to this source of water needs to be made in the morning and afternoon because it is too dangerous to go at night. A well in their village would literally change their lives. When you bite into a taco, quesadilla, or anything else involving a traditionally made corn tortilla, your taste buds get to experience the results of an ancient chemical process called nixtamalization. The technique dates to around 1500 BCE and involves cooking corn kernels with an alkaline substance, like lime or wood ash, which makes the dough softer, tastier, and much more nutritious. Only in the 20th century did scientists figure out the secret of nixtamalization—the process releases niacin, one of the essential B vitamins. Our guest, archaeologist and nixtamalization expert Rachel Briggs, says that the historical chemical process transformed corn from a regular food into a viable dietary staple, one that cultures around the world continue to rely on for many of their calories. Without nixtamalization Mesoamerican civilizations like the Maya and the Aztec would not have survived, let alone flourished. Benjamin Miller and Christina Martinez are the only chefs in Philadelphia making their tortillas from scratch. Lisa Vidal stars as Christina Martinez, the supportive wife of President Elias Martinez (Blair Underwood), in NBC’s new high-octane conspiracy thriller “The Event.” Vidal, an award-winning actress, is no newcomer to the challenging, multi-layered roles she’s been successfully portraying. She is most recognized for her regular roles on popular hit primetime series such as “Boston Legal,” “CSI Miami,” “The Division,” “ER,” “Third Watch” and “Southland.” A strikingly beautiful and seasoned actress of Puerto Rican descent, Vidal is a New York City native who began acting in Repertory Theater at age 14 and was cast the following year in the PBS series “Oye Willie,” thereby jump-starting a long and varied acting career, in which she has most often played grounded professionals balancing work and family. Vidal then went on to play the charming housekeeper for a good-natured elderly heiress, played by Loretta Young, in the holiday TV movie "Christmas Eve." The busy actress continued on such popular series as "The Cosby Show" and "Miami Vice." Determined to take roles that reflect and emphasize the diversity of the Latino community, Vidal acted in two "ABC After School Special" educational presentations: "Class Act: A Teacher's Story" and "In the Shadow of Love: A Teen AIDS Story." Vidal later recurred in the series "New York Undercover," as she played the sister of Michael DeLorenzo's New York City police detective, which widened her audience growth. Vidal was soon cast as cocky Jessica Helgado in the critically lauded police drama "High Incident," a Steven Spielberg production, and on the sitcom "The Brian Benben Show.”
