...in which we gather at YHA Borrowdale for a wide-ranging chat about hostelling in the Lake District: the people. the places and the passion. In the company of Aaron Jones, manager at YHA Borrowdale; Christine Thomas, co-owner of Elterwater Hostel; and Elterwater team member Charlie Spiller, we begin by asking what fanned their hostelling flames (family holidays, illicit treks and Amsterdam's red light district respectively). Looking back over the early, then glory, days of the YHA – when the charity operated 300 hostels; when you were expected to arrive "under your own steam";, and when guests mucked-in with chores – we proceed to today, where a professionalised 'home from home' hospitality approach is championed by both the YHA and a thriving independent sector. Immersing ourselves in hostel life, we profile a typical working day at both Borrowdale (buzzy games room, thriving bar) and Elterwater (table service, sticky toffee pudding) before quizzing our guests on their favourite hostels. Delving deeper into the business of running a hostel – a sector in recovery after the strains of Covid – we learn about the highs and lows of hostel operation; about the satisfaction that comes from facilitating new friendships, and about why, in an increasingly divided world, interactions in hostels are as important as ever. For more about Elterwater Hostel (always book direct!), see https://www.elterwaterhostel.co.uk/ and reviews on Google. For more about YHA Borrowdale see the YHA website (always book direct!) James 1:19-20 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be QUICK to LISTEN, SLOW to SPEAK and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.
1 Samuel 17:36-37 Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the LIVING GOD. The LORD who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.” What is meant by alone is that , our parents, friends or relatives may not be able to help us. The more accurate word to be used is PERSONAL instead of alone because we can always go to Jesus, we fight our spiritual wars ( go against Goliath) in the name of Jesus just like David did.

Isaiah 43:1- 2 But now, this is what the Lord says— he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel:“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; YOU are MINE. When you pass through the WATERS, I WILL be with YOU; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the FIRE, you will not be burned;the flames will NOT SET you ablaze.
Nehemiah 2:1-5 In the month of Nisan in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was brought for him, I took the wine and gave it to the king. I had not been sad in his presence before, so the king asked me, “Why does your face look so sad when you are not ill? This can be nothing but SADNESS of heart.” I was very much afraid, but I said to the king, “May the king live forever! Why should my face not look sad when the city where my ancestors are buried lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?” The king said to me, “What is it you want?” Then I prayed to the God of heaven, and I answered the king, “If it pleases the king and if your servant has found favor in his sight, let him send me to the city in Judah where my ancestors are buried so that I can REBUILD it.”
Mathew 12:33-37 “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, for the tree is known by its fruit. You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Enter Dolby Atmos, an immersive audio format which debuted for movies more than a decade ago that is now available across music services on 2.5 billion devices. In our latest podcast, Dolby's Head of Music Industry Relations, Christine Thomas discusses the evolution of the company's immersive audio efforts and how it gives artists the ability to deliver their music to audiences in an exciting new medium!
It's the time of year to perhaps start thinking about a holiday, and when you have a visual impairment there are often lots of things to consider. How you'll get there, whether the accommodation will be accessible and the kinds of activities that you'll do. So, we thought we'd look at some trips that could be suitable; including Sense Adventures, who offer walking holidays in the Malvern Hills and elsewhere, The Visually Impaired Sailing Association, who teach you how to sail a yacht and Christine Thomas tells us about why her static caravan in Cornwall is perfect for her independence. A few weeks ago, we spoke about a consultation that the Civil Aviation Authority have launched, to gather people's experiences of accessibility when dealing with airlines. They have now added a phone line, as well as online and email submission options. The number to call is: 0330 138 5015. You can also email: consumerenforcement@caa.co.uk. For more information, visit: https://consultations.caa.co.uk/corporate-communications/performance-framework-for-airline-accessibility/ Sense Adventures: https://www.senseadventures.co.uk/ The Visually Impaired Sailing Association: https://visa-gb.org.uk/ Presenter: Peter White Producer: Beth Hemmings Production Coordinator: Liz Poole Website image description: Peter White sits smiling in the centre of the image, wearing a dark green jumper. Above Peter's head is the BBC logo (three individual white squares house each of the three letters). Bottom centre and overlaying the image are the words "In Touch" and the Radio 4 logo (the word Radio in a bold white font, with the number 4 inside a white circle). The background is a bright mid-blue with two rectangles angled diagonally to the right. Both are behind Peter, one of a darker blue and the other is a lighter blue.

Today is special because I have some of my favorite humans EVER on the podcast and the only wedding planners I will work with on a styled shoot. Christine Thomas, Kelsey Ogenia and Dana Johnson are a trio of best friends who have 9-5 jobs that they love and together on the side create events that are truly expressive of their clients. I was first introduced to the genius of this trip in 2018 when we collaborated on creating a styled shoot. And not only did I get a glimpse into the beauty and fun of their creative brains but I also experienced their grace and love when I had to back out of photographing the shoot when my cousin passed away of Pancreatic cancer just 6 weeks after her diagnosis. Jade and Joy are the best in the business especially if you want to have a lot of fun while planning your unique wedding. I so hope you enjoy this conversation as we laugh, exchange high school stories and also get really serious about social media burnout and how to start a business with your BFFs and stay BFFs. https://jadeandjoyevents.com/ https://www.instagram.com/jadejoyevents/

This year marks the 170th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Police. This talk traces the history of the organisation through the stories of a few very ordinary British constables from the 1840s up to the First World War. Some sacrificed their careers by standing up for the rights of their colleagues, while others spent a lifetime fostering good relations with the local community. These were the men who helped mould the Force into the highly respected organisation which it became during the 20th century.Christine Thomas has had a 40 year career with the police in Hong Kong and London, working in the fields of Research and Archival Records Management. She is a member of the Association of Genealogists and Researchers in Archives (AGRA) and runs her own research service specialising in British expatriates who spent time in Hong Kong.
A growing movement is demanding the United States do away with the death penalty. In 2012 voters had the chance to vote to replace California's death penalty with life without the possibility of parole. But while some saw the ballot measure as a way to end the death penalty, others saw life without parole as another kind of death sentence. On this edition KALW reporter Nancy Mullane speaks to some of those on California's death row and we hear from two opponents of the death penalty about where the movement to end executions goes next. Featuring: Sam Robinson, Public Information Officer lieutenant; Walter Cook, San Quentin State Prison inmate; Demitrius Howard, San Quentin State Prison inmate; Justin Helzer, San Quentin State Prison inmate; Christine Thomas, Campaign to End the Death Penalty; David Dow, University of Houston Law Center professor.
