There's a very good chance that the traditions shared in this episode have been covered in years past. Luckily for the two idiots on the couch, our minds resemble those of gold fish and we often forget what we've discussed on here. Luckily part two for us, Ciara did remember just how much we loved a middle school band concert and brought us a little treat to enjoy at the beginning of the episode. It's Christmas time and this week we're resharing the original RTN Christmas Classic! Christmas expert James Cooper joins Bob and Ben to explain how Santa Claus, Christmas trees, and other Christmas traditions made their way into popular culture. December is a time for celebrations, including the eight days of Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights, and Kwanzaa. While Americans usually shop till they drop and exchange gifts , traditions around the world, old and new, bring a different twist to the season.

Welcome Diana! This one is a little outside the mold for the Christmas Around the World series. You see, Diana's childhood, the culture she was raised in, and the Christmases she enjoyed weren't really defined by the places she lived, geographically. In fact, her family moved 22 times in 17 years. Rather, her experiences were mainly defined by the agricultural communities she and her family traveled between. Diana was raised in the Bruderhof, a global collection of self-sustaining farms where all members surrender their personal goods (yep, including Christmas presents) and accept roles for the greater good of the community. Although Diana ultimately chose to leave the Bruderhof community when she was 19, moving to NYC to work as a chef, she retains warm memories of some aspects of her rather unique childhood. Some of the best of these memories include Christmastime, which were full of German Christmas traditions like decorating simply with apples and candles, singing spiritual songs, and making classic bakes like these traditional British Mincemeat Pies she's shared with us. From the time Diana was in high school she spent increasingly more hours in the kitchen (which she truly loved, although it was very heard labor) preparing daily suppers for her communities of 400 people. Thrilled to welcome Diana to the Christmas Around the World series today - and thank YOU so much for being here. Highlights Vision of the Bruderhof: People who wanted to live together, share everything, wear flowers, and run through the fields. Why no members keep their jobs, titles, or possessions Why Diana lived in 5 countries but associates Christmas with Germany Bruderhof Christmas traditions: singing, simple gifts, communal nights, childlike, not gluttonous, simplicity Happy memories: Fairytale snowy Christmases outdoors in nature in Upstate New York Rations of 1 cup of sugar per person per month Making sugar snow candy!!! Christmas presents in a community that doesn't believe in personal possessions School from 7am to 5pm, including working on the farm and in the kitchen Diana's exposure to food from seed to table. How much Diana loved cooking for 400 people as a teenager Diana's journey out of Bruderhof and how. Why there was no Christmas cooking/baking at home Which Christmas traditions Diana kept from the Bruderhof, and how her journey out of Bruderhof is reflected in her changing Christmas traditions German Lebkukken: Gingerbread cookies as ornaments > food. A special night 100 candles on the tree - Each person lights a candle and says someone you're praying for. Angel chimes and the time Diana's pigtail caught on fire. Mincemeat pies!!! Happy fa la la la holidays everyone! Week 5 of Christmas Around the Channels is a week late because Thanksgiving Week nearly crushed me, but we're here! Double podcast week! Hallmark Movies and Mysteries crushed it with A World Record Christmas while regular Hallmark held its own with Navigating Christmas. A Merry Scottish Christmas saw a Party of Five reunion of Scott Wolf and Lacey Chabert. Meanwhile Holiday Hotline on Sunday stole another favorite of the year. Lifetime started strong with Christmas Plus One and Planes, Trains, and Christmas Trees. UpTV did better than I expected with Country Hearts Christmas, and GAC kept up with their solid meh movies in Santa, Maybe and A Paris Christmas Waltz. Streaming services Netflix and Freevee suffered with their less than stellar Best. Christmas. Ever! and EXmas. Find all that and more now! And come back later this week for the Thanksgiving week 6 recap!
Happy fa la la la holidays everyone! Week 4 of Christmas Around the Channels is done, I'm now back from my work trip and finally remembered I never scheduled this post. Figures. What can I say? I got distracted by how good UpTV has been this year. Hallmark Movies and Mysteries had their first true mystery Christmas movie in Mystery on Mistletoe Lane which was a solid concept for them with Victor Webster and Erica Cerra. Hallmark ran the gambit of movies with the not great Everything Christmas, and solid movies in Christmas Island and A Heidelberg Holiday. GAC fell flat for me with Daniel Lissing's Christmas Keepsake and I didn't watch A Christmas Blessing, but based on the photoshop I wouldn't hold out much hope. Then there was UpTV with real life couple Franco Lo Presti and Emily Alatalo. When I tell you I'm obsessed. They crushed it. It's a must watch movie for me. Find all that and more now! (And I promise not to forget to post it again next week)
Week 2 of Christmas Around the Channels is done and thank goodness last week was the starting line up for Hallmark Channel. Kicking the week off, Hallmark Movies and Mysteries stole the week with Ms. Christmas Comes to Town. You know the rule, if it doesn't make me cry, it's not a 5! But maybe moving to Thursday night wasn't the best idea for my emotional well being! Hallmark had a so/so weekend with Christmas By Design, Mystic Christmas, and Joyeux Noel - Mystic being my favorite of the weekend. And GAC did much better in the set decor this week in both of their movies but the two Hallmark alums Paul Greene and Jill Wagner had less than zero chemistry in Bringing Christmas Home while Ash Tsai and Joey Heyworth did pretty well in their very standard Christmas plot line Journey To Christmas. Find all my thoughts and more now!
Happy fa la la la holidays everyone! Week 1 of the 2023 Christmas Around the Channels recap is here and what a strong start it was for Hallmark! Technically the season kicked off with GAC trying to start Christmas a week early, but Destined 2: Christmas Once More wasn't worthy of early airtime. But kicking it off for Hallmark, Checkin It Twice with Kevin McGarry and Kim Matula, followed by Where Are You, Christmas? on Saturday starting Lyndsy Fonseca and Michael Rady put the channel firmly into ratings first place. Both storylines were fun and the pairing was great for both. Twas The Text Before Christmas on GAC Saturday starring Merritt Patterson and Trevor Donovan was a definite step up for them garnering them a 3.75/5, and rounding out the week on Hallmark was Under the Christmas Sky featuring Ryan Paevey and Jessica Parker Kennedy. Unfortunately that one didn't have a lot of chemistry or a strong plot, but every other part of the movie kept it fresh enough for a 3.5/5. Listen now for all the best and worst parts and let's kick off the 2023 Christmas movie season together!
In this part two continuum of the Christmas Around the Channels preview, I give my first thoughts on all 9 2023 Hallmark Movies and Mysteries Miracles of Christmas, both of the new Hallmark Movies Now streaming service option, GAC Family's Great American Christmas and UpTV's Merry Movie Christmas lineups. We still don't have any definitive Lifetime lineup but are we shocked? No. Lifetime - seriously - why do you do this to me? Find where all your favorites stack up ahead of time and now that the dates are becoming a little clearer, will I go back on my word and actually watch the full GAC lineup? Find out all that and more now!

episode 147 Christmas in Norway Christmas Around the World Mini Series, Ep 05 Introduction Welcome back to the Christmas Around the World Series! This began with a post you can find on The Storied Recipe website. The post is titled Christmas DESSERTS Around the World and it's crowdsourced by The Storied Recipe Community (show notes). As people shared their cherished Christmas recipes and the memories surrounding them, I really wanted to hear MORE - so I decided to expand on a few of these with a little mini series about Christmas traditions all around the world. This year, I have 5 episodes in the series -Mai from Palestine, Kate from South Africa, Claire Marie from France, Mar from the Alicante region of Spain, and Alexandra from Norway. I really hope you listen to them all - and I hope to add more next year!!Today's guest is Alexandra, from Norway. She contributed a recipe for her mom's Chocolate Peppermint balls - sort of a mint chocolate truffle - or an especially beautiful homemade Peppermint Patty. In today's episode, she also shares a recipe for the special Rice Pudding left for Saint Nicholas on Christmas Eve. In our conversation today, Alexandra who grew up near the oldest town in Norway, established in 898, shares absolutely delightful memories of sweet, ancient Christmas traditions that she's experienced both as a child and as a mother. You may recognize these as the basis of so many American Christmas traditions and imagery - before the layers of consumerism were slapped on top.
