Whether you're ready or not, the moment will eventually come when your kid starts to wonder 'Is Santa Real?' When they ask you, do you know what you'll say, how you'll handle it?  In this episode of the Heartful Parent Podcast, I'm encouraging you to keep the magic alive, even if your kids are past the believing stage. Don't let go of the hope or the spirit of what Santa represents. Instead, dig in with connection, share the reality, and invite them to help keep the magic going. How? Well, I'm here to help with that! I have a couple of books to share, a little bit of practical advice, and a few ways to help explain Santa in a loving and magical way. Use the inevitable conversation as a way to invite heartfulness and connection into your relationship and your holiday season.  I'm sure you know a parent who may also need a little guidance for the Santa conversation, pass this episode along to them. And if you need more support that is specialized to you, your family, and your situation, The Heartful Parent Academy is a great place for you. I would absolutely love to see you there.  Resources: How Judy Blume Nearly Ruined Christmas by Christy Keating [full Lucy letter included] Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus by Chris Plehal  Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus (Classic Version) by Frances P. As we dissect the complexities of fostering safe environments for our families, we recognize the arduous yet crucial path to breaking free from destructive ties, for the sake of both parents and their little ones. The Safe Parenting Summit, convened by Christy Keating, brought together 28 seasoned voices in the realm of child rearing, and while Christy couldn't join us, her mission resonates through our episode. We unveil reflections on how adept parenting echoes through time, impacting not just our children but also those yet to come. Drawing from heartfelt tales, including my own dance with the trials of the legal labyrinth that is family court, this conversation underscores the significance of cultivating nurturing relationships. Amy & Christy are back for part 2 of our conversation, and we're talking about pornography.   Please believe us: your kid is going to see porn. Some families are more aware & ready for this moment than others, so what can you do and say to prepare? You can't prevent the exposure or know how your child will react, but we can get ready for it and start the conversation now. Pornography is all over the place and often hidden, and unfortunately kids view that as Sex Ed & think that pornography is what sex with a partner will be like for them - they assume that hardcore porn is real life. Seeing these images train their brain; watching porn today is very different from running into an issue of Playboy when we were kids, and it's impossible to avoid.   So what do we say to our kids? What's the magic word? Christy shares the way she uses values to talk to her teen, and Amy explains how to keep the conversation around other kids to break through to your own teen. We touch on monitoring software & sugar dating. The good news here is that there are many resources available for families to use, and it can get better.  Takeaways from the show Your kids will see pornography  Pornography is different than when you were a kid  Kids often keep it a secret if they see pornographic material. Let them know they won't be in trouble!   Pornography is often in hidden, unexpected spaces Kids see pornography as Sex Ed  Pornography trains their growing brain - including the themes of misogyny, racism, & shame around their bodies  Don't tell yourself, “it won't happen to my kid”  Porn is harder to avoid today than it was to find in the ‘80s  What do we say to our kids about this?  Conversations about pornography need to start early - earlier than you think! Keep them short & frequent Using monitoring software For more show notes, including transcripts, visit our website here. My journey may be relatable to you as a parent; after becoming a mom and feeling the pressure of dual roles, I decided to make a change. I want to help you explore how taking care of yourself and your relationships, using positive discipline techniques, and empowering your kids with brain and body safety tips can all be done in a heartful way.  My approach is real (some swear words included!) and I am a parent coach who admits I don't get it right all the time. This week on the High Wire Woman podcast, Rosanna Berardi is talking about the reality of parenthood. Her guest, Christy Keating, is a parenting coach, a child sexual abuse prevention expert, and the founder of the Heartful Parent. Over the years she has taught many parents and professionals how to keep children safe, and how to identify problematic behaviors both in-person and online. In this episode, Christy shares insights on becoming balanced parents, especially in the midst of a crisis like a pandemic.  You'll hear Rosanna and Christy talk about: Parenting is not an easy job, and it doesn't come with a manual. Parenting for teenagers especially in the midst of a pandemic, as well as with rising rates of suicidal thoughts, depression and anxiety, is even harder. You have to be willing to show up for them every day, and reinforce that you care and that you're there for them no matter what.  The only person whose feelings, thoughts and actions you can control is yourself. Accepting that as a parent is so important.  Give your kids expectations and responsibilities instead of threats. They will respond better.  Have family meetings that are collaborative instead of lectures. Your kids are more likely to listen if they feel heard.  It's important to set boundaries with your children. However, boundaries won't have any effect if there is no connection, respect or listening between you and your children. Christy talks about the importance of understanding that all social media is public and permanent. She also cautions against giving children smartphones before they're mentally and socially developed for them.  Parenting is a challenge, but it's a challenge that can be undertaken with the right amount of patience, care and love. Achieving the right balance will help you in the long run and build a stronger family foundation for you and your children.  Resources Rosanna Berardi | LinkedIn Rosanna Berardi | Berardi Immigration Law High Wire Woman Christy Keating | LinkedIn | Instagram  The Heartful Parent

Unfortunately, with the internet, if parents aren't having these conversations, our teens will find an unhealthy version of it elsewhere.    Key Takeaways How do we teach our children about consent?  What is the definition of consent?  If your teen doesn't feel comfortable asking for consent, then they should not be doing it.  What can your teen do when they experience rejection? On the other side of this, how can you teach your child to safely say no?  How do we help build the confidence in our children to say no?  Currently pornography makes up for 1/3rd of all sites and searches on the internet.  All of our teens will see pornography by the time they hit college.  If we don't have the conversation at home, our children will be learning about it on the internet.  What parental filtering systems should parents use?  You shouldn't just have ‘a conversation' and forget about it. You have to have many small 1-5 minute conversations about what's healthy and what's not in adult relationships.  According to a Harvard study, children want to hear more from you!  Remember, it's better to start now than to never start.  What happens when your teen just refuses to have conversations?    Sponsored by Stand Up for Your Greatness! Edgerety.com/education   Resources Theheartfulparent.com Theheartfulparent.com/consent Bark.us Mcc.gse.harvard.edu   Quotes:   “I always say to kids, if you're not able to talk about it, then you're not ready to do it.”  “Our teens need to understand that ‘no' is a complete sentence.”    “Consent can't be a one-time conversation. It has to be ongoing.”

As parents, our most important leadership role is at home. But sometimes it's easy to forget that. The rush to get everyone fed and where they need to be on time or the desire to spare our kids the pain of failure leads us to take leadership shortcuts. We take over, do things ourselves...in order to make sure it's done right and efficiently. In doing so, we limit our kids' abilities to develop into leaders themselves. In today's conversation with former prosecutor turned parenting coach, Christy Keating, we discuss strategies for raising our kids to be the future leaders the world needs (and we have a bonus conversation about what Christy calls "extreme leadership": how to find what fulfills us in any job).About Christy:Christy Keating is the founder and CEO of The Heartful Parent.  Christy loves helping parents find more love, joy, and connection in their families and with their children by helping them discover newfound energy in their parenting, develop an appreciation for what they have and who they are, and create sustainable ways to achieve their vision or dream for their family.  Christy is a Certified Parent Coach® , a Certified Positive Discipline Instructor, a Certified Instructor with the Gottman Institute.  She is also a long-time leader and speaker at the Program for Early Parent Support, In addition to her work as a parent coach, Christy is a licensed attorney and former prosecutor of 20 years with an expertise in the prosecution of sexually violent predators, as well as an active member of the National Coalition to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation.  Through The Heartful Parent's sister company, Savvy Parents Safe Kids, Christy offers child safety workshops, presentations, and consulting to both parents and professionals.Links Shared:Christy's WebsiteParenting For the Future ToolIf you want to join this movement of healthy, purpose-driven moms, be sure to subscribe and connect with us!IG: @wearemomsthatleadFB: @momsthatlead

While many of us might cringe at the thought of talking to our children about sex, consent, and identity, these are topics we are wise to delve into. So, why is it so hard for parents to talk to kids about these important concepts? And, when it comes to our sons, where and how do we begin talking about gender, consent, sex, identity and empathy? And why are these conversations important to raising feminist boys? Is there any way to feel less uncomfortable when we talk about sex with our children? Is there a best way to have these conversations? Tune in to this week's show for answers to these questions and more!   Psychologist and author, Dr. Bobbi Wegner joins Marti & Erin for a compelling conversation on the importance of teaching our children -- and especially our sons -- about sex, consent, identity, gender, and empathy. The author of Raising Feminist Boys: How to Talk with Your Child about Gender, Consent, and Empathy and a mom herself, Bobbi shares insights into how we might approach these subjects and whether we should approach them differently with our sons and daughters. Tune in as she demystifies these sometimes sticky subjects!   WHAT STEPS MIGHT YOU TAKE TO RAISE A FEMINIST BOY? How will you begin talking with your son about gender, consent, sex, identity and empathy? What can you do to model empathy for your sons and daughters?
