Do you ever find yourself getting overwhelmed or dysregulated when your child gets overwhelmed or dysregulated? Ah-hem, yes. We ALL do. And even though we may have the tools in our toolbox, it's challenging to use them in that exact right moment.  In this episode of the Heartful Parent Podcast, I'm talking mindfulness with with Dr. Christopher Willard, a clinical psychologist and author. We have a very heartful conversation about mindfulness and emotional regulation. We're digging into the power of being responsive rather than reactive — a skill every parent can benefit from.  Dr. Willard shares his own journey into mindfulness, offering simple, practical tips to make mindfulness an enjoyable and accessible part of daily life for both parents and kids. You'll also get a sneak peek into Dr. Willard's upcoming book, Feelings Are Like Farts, which uses (fart) humor to help kids better understand their emotions.  This lighthearted yet meaningful conversation is full of relatable insights and actionable advice, perfect for any parent looking to navigate the ups and downs of family life with a little more calm and connection. Tune in for a dose of mindfulness inspiration and share with another parent who may have a kiddo who laughs at farts.  Resources: drchristopherwillard.com Follow Dr. Chris Willard @drchriswillard on Facebook | Instagram Books: Growing Up Mindful by Christopher Willard Alphabreaths by Christopher Willard, PsyD Feelings Are Like Farts by Christopher Willard, PsyD 10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge and Found Self-Help That Actually Works by Dan Harris Real Happiness by Sharon Salzberg Full Catastrophe Living: Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain, and Illness by Jon Kabat-Zinn Follow Christy @theheartfulparent | Join the Heartful Parent Academy with code PODCAST

I am answering 2 listener questions in this episode of the Heartful Parent Podcast!  Question #1: What do we do when we are watching our teens & tweens navigate relationships? How much do you give advice and how much do you let them figure out on their own?  Young relationships can be tricky, and there is a lot to learn. So when do you step in? When do you stay out of it? My advice is to lean in with empathy and curiosity and then to ask a key question: what would you like to do to move forward?  Your teen will probably surprise you! Question #2: What should I do about my child's cussing?   Let's talk about modeling and setting boundaries, because guess what…you really can't control your child's language. You can control your reaction to it though, so let's start there.  Get your parenting question answered, email me christy@theheartfulparent.com   Rate, review, and share! Welcome back to Our Mindful Nature! This week, we're continuing our heartfulness series by stepping off the meditation cushion and into the great outdoors.Last episode, we explored the softer, heart-led practice of meditation — a way of being curious, embodied, and a co-participant in the experience rather than its manager. But heartfulness isn't just for meditation; it's a lens for living. And one of the most powerful ways to nurture heartfulness is by connecting with nature.

Happy New Year and welcome back to Our Mindful Nature, where we explore the intersection of meditation, nature, and mental health. Let's start the year by diving into a fresh, gentler perspective on mindfulness — or should we say, heartfulness? In this episode, I share a thought that's been swirling in my mind: what if we reframed our practice? While in the West, meditation is often translated as “mindfulness,” the original Pali word aligns more closely with the concept of “heartfulness.” Imagine how this shift might change the way we experience meditation practice and life.

Forgiveness Coach, Brenda Reiss is my guest and she is here to help us explore the profound impact of forgiveness on our mental, emotional, and physical well-being, especially within the parenting space. Brends presents us with a 5-step process to redefine and embrace forgiveness. Dan Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson .  The 4 S's are a beautiful framework for thinking about what's important and how we show up,  and provides parents with some clear, concrete strategies for ensuring that we are parenting with presence and connection.  We can all help our children feel Safe, Seen, Soothed, and Secure; I'm sharing why it's important, how to do it, and some successes and learning moments for me as a mom.  As always, I would love to support you. If you need help with the 4 S's or anything else in parenting, please reach out christy@theheartfulparent.com or come see how The Heartful Parent Academy can give you the support and sense of community you might need.  Resources: The Power of Showing Up by Dr. Dan Siegel and Dr. Tina Bryson

New Year's resolutions are not really my thing, but I do like a reset around this time of year. So as we start 2024, I'm asking these questions (for myself and for you): What do you want for yourself, as a parent, professional, a friend, a human? What do you want for your partnership (if you're parenting with a partner)? What will make 2024 feel like a success to you?  And what are you willing to do to get the things you want?  With these questions in mind, I offer you my ingredients that make up my Recipe for a Good Life.  Some of these are my own gems of wisdom and some I got from other people who have positively impacted my own life. Just like with any new recipes you try, you might make some tweaks or changes, but this is a good place to start. Happy New Year!  If you are finding yourself struggling with how to build a Recipe for a Good Life, I would love to support you. Teri Schmidt defines leadership as “courageously using your talents as a way for others to courageously use theirs”, and I have to say that is a nice picture of leadership. Teri is a repeat guest on The Heartful Parent Podcast, and she is back to not only define servant leadership, she is here to teach us how to become strong leaders.  Imposter syndrome is real, and the world has unfortunately conditioned us to think of leaders a certain way. Teri reframes this for us, and explains how our identities can become tied up into the “Drama Triangle”. In this representation, we can get a little bit stuck in the role of hero/rescuer, villain, and/or victim.   Teri and I dig into misinterpretations of leadership and how to recognize and function within the role that we gravitate towards. There are so many parallels between taking a leadership role in the workplace and parenting. We want you to be able to tap into your talents to excel at both.  If you missed Teri's first time on the podcast, make sure to go check out Episode 8: Growing in Our Leadership at Home and at Work.  Resources: Episode 8: Growing in Our Leadership at Home and at Work  Teri Schmidt LinkedIn Serve and Thrive Leadership Assessment www.strongertoserve.com

Do you have mealtime battles in your house?  Most parents do, because there are a lot of confusing resources out there, and because most of us got some messed up ideas about food from how we were raised.  So to dig into this, I have my good friend and mentor Christine Muenz on the podcast to share her deep wisdom.   Christine is a parenting educator, lactation educator, and an infant feeding specialist. She teaches parenting classes at hospitals in the Seattle area and lectures at conferences for professionals who work with families in the stages of pregnancy and postpartum. And she is joining me for a two-part conversation on eliminating mealtime battles. *SIGH OF RELIEF* In this part of our conversation, Christine and I dig into the way we feed our children as infants and how this changes as kids grow and get older. And the decisions we make and the battles we pick can have unintended effects with our kids and in our families. Christine is not only the  ‘wisdom keeper' on this topic, she offers a perspective that will truly change how mealtimes play out and help you focus on connection with your family.  Christine is beginning to have all sorts of new offerings, so keep checking back to her website to see what's coming! christinemuenz.com Come back in two weeks for the second part of this conversation. Today's Episode Dr. Raj talks with Kamlesh D. Patel (Daaji), delving into his journey from a pharmacist to an advocate of heartfulness meditation. They explore how he incorporated this practice into his daily routine and went on to initiate a global movement, empowering individuals worldwide to embrace heartfulness. Today's Guest  Born in Gujarat in 1956, Kamlesh D. Patel (Daaji) displayed an early interest in meditation and spirituality. He started Heartfulness Meditation at the age of nineteen while studying to be a pharmacist. Soon after, he met his first Guru, Babuji, the second guide in the Heartfulness lineage. After graduating with honors from L.M. College of Pharmacy in Ahmedabad, Daaji married and moved to New York City. There, he and his wife raised their two sons, while he steadily built a successful pharmacy business. At the same time, Daaji continued to pursue his love of meditation as a devoted disciple of Babuji's successor, Chariji. Over the years, Daaji played an increasingly active role in the Heartfulness Movement, both organisationally and by spreading its message and teaching its method. In 2011, Chariji selected Daaji as his spiritual successor. As the leader of the Heartfulness Movement, Daaji now fulfills the many duties of a modern-day guru, traveling widely and extending his support to seekers everywhere. Daaji firmly believes in nourishing today's youth with practical self-management tools and universal values. Under his guidance, students and faculty in over 2,500 schools, universities, and colleges are now benefitting from a portfolio of value-based self-development programs. As a self-professed student of spirituality, Daaji devotes much of his time and energy to his personal research in the field of spirituality and consciousness, and regularly shares his findings through public speaking engagements, his website, and social media platforms, and in broadcast, print, and digital media. Daaji's articles have appeared in various leading publications including Huffington Post, Chicago Tribune, Times of India, and Business Standard. His well-received Radio City Swaran series, Dil Ki Awaaz, ran for twelve episodes. Daaji advocates bridging ancient tradition with modern scientific understanding and has assembled a team of one hundred scientists to research the physiological and genetic effects of meditation and yogic transmission. As he often says, “You are the experimenter, the experiment, and also its result.” Learn more about Daaji's practice here About Dr. Raj Dr Raj is a quadruple board certified physician and associate professor at the University of Southern California.
