Back for solo episode 7. I dive into techniques on how to improve your memory—sharing tips that have helped me to remember names and lists.I also give my take on the recent election, with a bit of humor and a bot of speculation. Plus, there's a story from my trip to Vietnam, where I had eye-opening experiences. For example, I was told the "American War" is not to be talked about in North Vietnam. In the last episode, I touched on the origins of heroin. Here I mention the article I wrote about how the Nazis used methamphetamine to fuel their wartime aggression—a shocking discovery from Norman Ohler's Blitzed, which is a must-read for anyone curious about World War II's lesser-known history.
There are tens of millions of small and medium-size businesses in the United States alone, and depending on their state incorporation, many are in danger of business identity theft. Andy Pham is an American hero by many standards, for sure with regard to the right to become wildly successful. He's truly living the American Dream. Having grown up in Communist Vietnam for the first ten years of his life, his mom sent him to the United States where she believed he would have a better life and avoid being drafted into the war in Cambodia. She was right. His story of success is eye-popping, but what happened to him on the scam front is almost beyond belief. Pastor Matt Brown has witnessed miracles of many types personally and in his congregation. In his new book, Matt takes a deep dive into the subject and invites the reader to discover Jesus as not only Savior, but as a Healer. In this episode Matt shares: What led him to write a book on miracles His own personal miracle healing The "soul cry" and how God is moving through these times A powerful resurrection miracle of a young boy in Communist Vietnam How to pray for a miracle (in the name of Jesus) Jesus wants to do a miracle through you! Healing of the soul, emotions and spirit When you are in the waiting for the miracle (keep praying!) Prayers don't expire! They outlive us! The power of his mother's prayer when he lost his faith The complex nature of healing and looking at how Jesus modeled this A Blessing over those listening that are experiencing hardship John 14:12-14 "Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it." -Jesus "God is doing miracles. He is changing lives. I don't know what God will do in your life, but we don't believe in what He will do, we believe in what He can do, and that's where our faith has to lie. Miracles draw attention. I believe the more we pray, the more miracles we see. There's a direct correlation. It's so important for us to pray out loud in Jesus' name. There's no other name under heaven by which man can be saved." -Pastor Matt Brown, Sandals Church Matthew Stephen Brown is the founding and Senior Pastor at Sandals Church in Riverside, CA. From a small 8-person church plant in 1997, Sandals Church now has 14 physical campuses throughout California, a growing online campus with more than 50 countries tuning in, and a digital presence reaching 110,000 people weekly. On April 30, 1975, the South Vietnamese capital of Saigon fell to the North Vietnamese Army, effectively ending the Vietnam War. In the days before, U.S. forces evacuated thousands of Americans and South Vietnamese. However, not everyone who wanted to escape, could. With South Vietnam now under communist control, life for those left behind became a completely new and challenging world, One that would eventually lead many to escape by any means necessary. On today's episode I welcome Retired Marine Corps fighter pilot, WSO, and Forward Air Controller, LtCol “Charlie” Dinh for Part 1 of our 2 part series. We talk about his childhood in communist South Vietnam, how his family eventually escaped, what life was like as a Vietnamese refugee in Paris, France, and how going to HS in Los Angeles not knowing a word of English, is a great motivator to learn a language. Enjoy!

Life can be pretty tough for the pangolin. This scaly-skinned ant-eater is the most heavily trafficked mammal in the world. Followers of some branches of Chinese medicine believe pangolin parts can cure anything from blood clots to cancer and they're willing to pay big money for poached animals. As a boy growing up in rural Vietnam Thai Van Nguyen watched his neighbours capture and kill a mother and baby pangolin. His disgust inspired an intense urge to help the pangolin and the threatened habitats in which it lives. Founding an independent conservation organisation in Communist Vietnam isn't easy, nor is facing down heavily armed poaching gangs engaged in the trade with China. Despite the challenges Thai has set up the country's first effective anti-poaching unit, disrupting the trade and catching hundreds of smugglers red-handed. Peter Hadfield travels to Vietnam to see Thai and his team in action and gauge the impact of his work on local communities and the country's attitudes to its native wildlife. In this episode of Catholic Mysticism, Dcn. Al Bielawski interviews Vincent, who escaped communist Vietnam in which his father was killed. (December 12, 2020)
The Vietnamese Boat People were a series of refugees that fled Communist Vietnam in a mass exodus occurring in 1954, and again from 1975-1992. In 1954, the Northern Vietnamese fled to Southern Vietnam to escape the corrupt and violent Viet Minh regime. Under the Viet Minh, anyone deemed an enemy was prosecuted under the full extent of the law: this included Catholics, intellectuals, landowners, and generally anyone that disobeyed the regime. In 1975 a military man by the name of Ba Van Nguyen took the huge risk of boarding a Chinook CH-47 with his family to escape the communist soldiers of North Vietnam. He had no solid plan but knew he had to get his family out, and things somehow came to fruition once he encountered a Navy ship helping other refugees looking for a new life. The story of Ba Van Nguyen is an incredible one, and we are honored to be joined this episode by his son, Miki Nguyen who relays this story from the eyes of a six year old boy at that time, up until the last years of Ba's life where he got the chance to reunite with those men of the USS Kirk and salute them for their service. Miki got to tell this story in the 2015 Oscar nominated film "Last Days in Vietnam," as well as in the book he authored, "My Father the Badass: An inspiring real-life story of a true HERO." Be sure to check those out after you listen to this in-depth discussion. Also, you've heard us talk about Hurricane Media's first ever short film "Big Mountain Heroes" pushing the positive agenda of "thrills before pills" where special operations military veterans you know from the podcast ski and snowboard the French, Swiss, and Italian Alps. We even had the guys in studio to reflect on the adventure back on Episode 290, and if you're a Spec Ops Channel member (which we highly recommend) you've already enjoyed the film. This is The Do It For Yourself Podcast. Each week I sit down with someone who is doing it for themselves and chasing a dream they just couldn’t suppress. This is often speakers, entrepreneurs, or athletes. They all share one thing in common, they are overcoming challenges and never giving up. Someone who is Doing It For Themselves is not selfish in their pursuit, they are simply chasing a dream or working towards a goal because it is something THEY want to do. They are not forging down a path because society or someone is telling them it’s what they should be doing. My guest this week is an amazing man who goes by the name Tuong. Tuong was sent to the United States at a very young age to escape Communist Vietnam. His journey lasted almost a year and he endured some of the craziest stories to get here. But his journey was just beginning. Tuong has gone on to build a successful career here in the US thanks to his amazing brother and his incredible work ethic to pursue his dream and the opportunity his parents gave him. His story is nothing short of amazing and I think you are going to really enjoy this interview. Do It For Yourself Instagram
