Episode 2236: Colum McCann and Dianne Foley on what a mother said to her son's ISIS executioner

Keen On Democracy

What can a mother say to the cold-blooded executioner of her son? In American Mother, the heartrending story of the murdered American journalist Jim Foley, the writer Colum McCann and Diane Foley, Foley's mother and founder of the Foley Foundation, explore this terrible dilemma. This memorable conversation with Foley and McCann explores forgiveness, faith, and the moral complexities of justice. Most of all, though, it's the conversation about a mother's remarkable love for her dead son which she maintains and even redirects to his ISIS killer. Here are the five KEEN ON takeaways from our conversation with McCann and Foley:* The Power of Forgiveness: Diane Foley's ability to forgive Alexander Kotey, one of her son Jim's killers, demonstrates extraordinary grace. Her Christian faith played a crucial role in this process, though forgiveness wasn't easy or natural - it was a conscious choice that led to meaningful human connection even in the most difficult circumstances.* Policy Impact Through Tragedy: Jim Foley's death led to significant changes in U.S. hostage policy. The Foley Foundation's work has helped bring home nearly 150 Americans since 2015, and led to the creation of a formal government structure for handling hostage situations - a direct result of the Obama administration's initial failures and subsequent reforms.* The Complexity of Justice: The case highlights nuanced views on justice and the death penalty. The Foleys advocated against the death penalty for their son's killers, arguing that life imprisonment offers a chance for reflection and potential redemption, while execution would simply perpetuate cycles of violence.* Grief's Individual Journey: Diane's experience shows how grief manifests differently for each person. While her other children needed distance from the situation to heal, she channeled her grief into activism and forgiveness. Her willingness to meet her son's killer was not shared by other family members.* The Value of Journalism: Jim Foley's story underscores the importance and dangers of conflict journalism. His commitment to telling stories of people yearning for freedom in the Middle East, even after being kidnapped once in Libya, reflects the crucial role journalists play in helping the world understand complex situations and human struggles.Diane M. Foley is President and Founder of the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation, which she created in September 2014 less than a month after the public beheading by ISIS in Syria of her son James W. Foley, an American freelance conflict journalist. In 2015, she led JWFLF efforts to fund the start of Hostage US and the International Alliance for a Culture of Safety, ACOS. She actively participated in the National Counterterrorism Center hostage review which culminated in the Presidential Policy Directive-30. This directive created the current US hostage enterprise consisting of an interagency Hostage Recovery Fusion Cell, Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs, and a White House Hostage Response Group to free innocent Americans taken hostage or wrongfully detained abroad. JWFLF was instrumental in the passage of the Robert Levinson Hostage Taking and Accountability Act. She has been a tireless hostage, wrongful detainee and family advocate within the US hostage enterprise, Congress, and every presidential administration since 2014. She has raised awareness of international hostage-taking and wrongful detention using the award-winning documentary, “Jim, the James Foley story”, opinion pieces in the New York Times, Washington Post and USA Today and media interviews. Diane has spoken on the power of forgiveness in various faith communities and was included in 200 Women, edited by Geoff Blackwell. She co-authored the book “American Mother” which was published in 2024 with writer Colum McCann. Diane is also the author of a chapter called, “Life For A Voice: the Work of Journalist James W. Foley through the Eyes of his Family” in Living with Precariousness, edited by Christina Lee and Susan Leong, which was published in 2023.Previously, Diane worked as a community health nurse and as a family nurse practitioner for 18 years. She received both her undergraduate and master's degrees from the University of New Hampshire. She is active in her Roman Catholic parish of St Katherine Drexel in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, where she lives with her husband, Dr. John W. Foley. She is the mother of five children.Colum McCann is the internationally bestselling author of the novels Let the Great World Spin and TransAtlantic. His newest novel, Apeirogon, will appear in 2020. It has already been acclaimed as a "transformative novel" (Raja Shehadeh). He is also the author of Zoli, Dancer, This Side of Brightness, and Songdogs, as well as three critically acclaimed story collections. His fiction has been published in more than forty languages. As well as a National Book Award winner, Colum has been a finalist for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award and was the inaugural winner of the Ireland Fund of Monaco Literary Award in Memory of Princess Grace. He has been named one of Esquire's "Best and Brightest," and his short film Everything in This Country Must was nominated for an Oscar in 2005. A contributor to The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic Monthly, and The Paris Review, he teaches in the Hunter College MFA Creative Writing Program. It's Monday, September 2nd, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Afghan Muslims coming to faith in Christ The last time Khada saw her husband was an ordinary day – or as ordinary as any day can be in Afghanistan since the Taliban takeover in 2021, reports Open Doors. Afghan citizens face daily restrictions, oppression and danger, especially for underground Christians like Khada and her husband, Ehsan. Khada was born into a deeply religious Muslim family. She expected to follow the same path as her mother: marry the Muslim man chosen by her parents and raise a devout Muslim family herself. Her Christian boss did something very gutsy. She gave Khada a Bible. In Afghanistan, even before the Taliban takeover, it was extremely risky to give a Muslim a Bible. It's illegal to convert from Islam and very dangerous to share your Christian faith. Over the next six months, the Muslim couple read through the Bible together.  After trusting Christ as their Savior, they shared their new-found faith with relatives, many of whom also became Christians, despite the risks. Tragically, Eshan was killed by Muslim extremists for abandoning the false prophet of Mohammad. One Open Doors field worker said, “Despite hardships, believers' unwavering faith in Jesus Christ motivates them to operate covertly, spreading the good news among their fellow Afghans.” Prayerfully consider giving $4 to supply a Bible or $22 to help pay for a Christian radio broadcast into Afghanistan through a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. According to Open Doors, Afghanistan is the 10th most dangerous country worldwide in which to be a Christian. Pray the same prayer for our Afghan brothers and sisters in Christ as the Apostle Paul asked believers to pray for him. In Ephesians 6:19-20, he wrote, “Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the Gospel. … Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.” Kamala Harris delivered generalities in CNN interview Last Thursday night, CNN's Dana Bash sat down with Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz for her first interview in 40 days.  Kamala spoke in generalities right out of the gate. BASH: “The voters are really eager to hear what your plans are. If you are elected, what would you do on day one in the White House?” HARRIS: “There are a number of things I will tell you. First and foremost, one of my highest priorities, is to do what we can to support and strengthen the middle class. When I look at the aspirations, the goals, the ambitions of the American people, I think that people are ready for a new way forward, in a way that generations of Americans have been fueled by, by hope and by optimism. I think, sadly, in the last decade, we have had in the former president, someone who has really been pushing an agenda and an environment that is about diminishing the character and the strength of who we are as Americans, dividing our nation, and I think people are ready to turn the page on that.” BASH: “So, what would you do Day One?” HARRIS: “Day One, it's going to be about, one, implementing my plan for what I call an ‘opportunity economy.' I've already laid out a number of proposals in that regard, which include what we're going to do to bring down the cost of everyday goods, what we're going to do to invest in America's small businesses, what we're going to do to invest in families, for example, extending the child tax credit to $6,000 for families for the first year of their child's life to help them buy a car seat, to help them buy baby clothes, a crib. So, there are a number of things on Day One.” BASH: “So, you have been vice president for three and a half years. The steps that you're talking about now, why haven't you done them already?” Kamala has no regrets in describing Biden as “extraordinarily strong” CNN's Dana Bash asked Harris about her absurd and truly unbelievable defense of Biden's cognitive ability even after his June debate with Trump when Biden's mental decline was painfully obvious for all to see. BASH: “Vice President Harris, you were a very staunch defender of President Biden's capacity to serve another four years. Right after the debate, you insisted that President Biden is extraordinarily strong.  Given where we are now, do you have any regrets about what you told the American people?” HARRIS: “No, not at all.” Tim Walz confronted over lie he “served in war” CNN's Dana Bash asked Tim Walz, the Democratic Vice Presidential nominee, about his false claim that he served in war. BASH: “I want to ask you a question about how you've described your service in the National Guard. You said that you carried weapons in war, but you have never deployed actually in a war zone. A campaign official said that you misspoke. Did you?” WALZ: “Well, first of all, I'm incredibly proud. I've done 24 years of wearing uniform of this country. My record speaks for itself. But I think people are coming to you to know me. I speak like they do. I speak candidly. I wear my emotions on my sleeves. BASH: “The idea that you said that you were in war. Did you misspeak, as the campaign has said?” WALZ: “Yeah, I said we were talking about, in this case, this was after a school shooting, the idea of carrying these weapons of war. My wife, the English teacher, told me my grammar is not always correct.” J.D. Vance called Walz a liar In a separate CNN interview, Republican Vice Presidential nominee J.D. Vance called Tim Walz out for his lies. VANCE: “I've never criticized what Tim Walz did when he was in the military. I criticized his lying about his own record. This is a guy who was captured on video saying, ‘I carried a gun in war.' He never went to war. “This is a guy who's been captured on video as other people say, he's an Afghanistan veteran, he's a veteran of a war, nodding along in agreement instead of saying, ‘No, no. I did serve my country, and I did it honorably, but I never went to a war zone.' I'm not criticizing Tim Walz's service. I'm criticizing the fact that he lied about his service for political gain. Dana, I do think it's scandalous behavior.” Walz confronted over two other lies But Walz' lies did not stop with his military record. BASH: “You had to clarify that you had said that you and your wife used IVF, but it turned out you used a different kind of fertility in order to have children. And then, when you ran for Congress in 2006, your campaign repeatedly made false statements about a 1995 arrest for drunken reckless driving. What do you say to voters who aren't sure whether they can take you at your word? WALZ: “I certainly own my mistakes when I make them. I spoke about the treatments that were available to us that had those beautiful children there. That's quite a contrast in folks that are trying to take those rights away from us.” For the record, Donald Trump is not trying to curtail the availability of In Vitro Fertilization at all. Historic Gutenberg Bible published August 24, 1456 And finally, August 24th, 1456 was a unique anniversary.  That's when the second volume of the Gutenberg Bible was bound in Mainz, Germany. It completed a two-year project to create the first complete book printed with movable type.  The Gutenberg Bible was named after the inventor of the unique printing press with movable type, Johannes Gutenberg. It marked the start of the "Gutenberg Revolution" and the age of printed books in the West. Proverbs 30:5 says, “Every word of God is flawless; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Monday, September 2nd, in the year of our Lord 2024. Subscribe by Amazon Music or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. Do you think you're too old to start a business? Do you worry it's too late to pivot and do something you're truly passionate about? Something that could make a huge difference in the lives of you and your family?  It's not too late. It's never too late. I say it often, but sometimes it takes hearing it from somebody else before it really sinks in.  Get ready to be inspired as I introduce you to Bev Schweigert, owner of Blessed Be Boutique and member of Launch Your Box.  Bev “retired” more than six years ago and spent six months wondering what to do next. Her Christian faith is central to her life and part of living that for Bev was going on a mission trip to Peru. Bev needed to raise some money to fund that trip and ended up selling Christian jewelry to do so. Soon after, the pandemic hit and Bev's online jewelry sales skyrocketed. But, once life started to get back to normal, sales started to slow way down.  Bev knew that if she wanted to keep growing her business, she needed to find ways to bring more of her target customers into her world - that meant attracting more Christian women. Bev had been journaling and started a Facebook group for women to reflect on scripture and journal along with her. She went Live in the group 5 days a week and just spent time serving her audience. Soon they started asking her to sell the products she was using - her journal and journaling supplies.  Bev did even more. She developed a creative devotional that includes crafts, poetry, songs to listen to, and more. She turned the idea of a devotional or journal into a true experience for Christian women. And it was a hit!  Soon, Bev started creating one-time devotional boxes - the first was inspired by her memories of summer camp. It included crafts to go along with the devotionals and all the supplies her customers needed to complete them. These boxes sold very well, inspiring Bev to create additional one-time boxes for holidays.  Before long, Bev started thinking about starting a subscription box. A friend and fellow business owner happened to be a member of Launch Your Box and encouraged Bev to join.  The results? Bev sold out her first launch with 80 subscribers! And when she opened back up in time for the next box, she sold out again, adding 45 more subscribers for a total of 130. That's right - Bev passed the 100 subscriber mark on only her second box! She'll open back up for box number three very soon and hopes to add 45 more subscribers.  There is so much about Bev's story that inspired me and will inspire you. And part of that is her age. See, Bev is 61. She started her business when she was 55. A lot of people think they're “too old” to start a subscription box business or any type of small business. If that sounds like you, Bev has a message for you. “It's never too late to get started!”  Bev has big goals for 2024. She wants to double what she did last year in sales, and she's already off to a strong start. Bev is having so much fun with her business - including her subscription box - that she can't imagine not working. Which is a good thing, since her husband hopes to retire soon thanks to the success of Blessed Be!  It doesn't matter if you are in your 30s, 40s, 50s, or beyond….it's never too late to start your subscription box business.  This episode is going to inspire the heck out of you.   Find and follow Bev:  Blessed Be Boutique on Facebook Blessed Intentions Facebook Group Blessed Be Boutique on Instagram   Blessed Be Boutique Website Join me in all the places:   Facebook Instagram Launch Your Box with Sarah Website  Are you ready for Launch Your Box? Women - Exposing the Big Cover Up is the first in a series of honest & bold episodes on some of the strange expectations that have been placed on Christian women in the church, by the church. It's time for honesty and openness. Why? Because all injustices, legalism, coercion, abuses, unrighteousness, and affronts to the freedom bought by the blood of Jesus will eventually out! And they out for the wellbeing and good of us all, as individuals, as the church, and subsequently the world. This episode delves into the controversial history of head coverings for women in the church. Michelle shares her personal experiences and reflections on the requirement for women to wear head coverings in church settings, particularly during the 80s and 90s. She discusses the pressure and coercion women faced to conform to this practice, highlighting the theological debates and the lack of clarity surrounding the scriptural basis for such a requirement. The episode challenges the silence and lack of accountability from church leaders who enforced this practice, calling for reflection and potentially an apology for the harm caused. KEY TAKEAWAYSThe practice of requiring women to wear head coverings in church was a common expectation in certain Christian circles during the 80s and 90s.The enforcement of head coverings for women was based on a misinterpretation of a scripture in 1 Corinthians 11, leading to a form of oppression and control. The pressure on women to conform to the head covering rule was often enforced by church leaders, causing feelings of guilt and rebellion if not followed. The sudden discontinuation of the head covering requirement in Western churches raises questions about its true significance and the lack of accountability or apology from those who enforced it.BEST MOMENTS"I spent the first years of my Christian life, mostly during the 80s and early 90s, with women being expected to wear a head covering in church.""I was transported into a marvellously freeing relationship with him. One that gave freedom from things that were bad for me.""I was so grieved. But in all of that time, I remained convinced that I had done the right thing.""And all of this is control and abuse. It says, I as a man am okay just as I am before God. In this episode, Michelle and Stuart explore the importance of being informed as Christians. Drawing from the story of Nehemiah, they highlight the relevance of understanding the world around us and the agendas at play. Both Michelle and Stuart emphasize the need for Christians to be aware of the spiritual battle taking place and to discern the truth amidst the noise. They discuss the dangers of blindly accepting mainstream narratives and encourages listeners to engage critically, research, and question. By being informed, Christians can pray effectively, resist evil, and stand up for the values that promote the goodness of God's kingdom.KEY TAKEAWAYSChristians need to be informed about what is happening in the world in order to pray effectively and resist evil. There are agendas and conspiracies at work that seek to harm and take away the freedoms and values that Christians hold dear.Christians should not dismiss everything as conspiracy theories, but rather critically examine information and research to discern the truth.Christians must be courageous and speak up against injustice and falsehoods, rallying together to make a positive impact.Division and silence are tactics used by the enemy to weaken the Church, so Christians should strive for unity and stand firm in their beliefs.BEST MOMENTS"Nehemiah could have fallen into this. There are several things in that account. There are several times when he has things said that he could have believed and he didn't.""As Christians, we have to be brave. There are so many people actually standing up against a lot of things that are going on who are not Christians.""We can't say, oh yeah, but it's not them, it's the devil, and sort of use that as a reason to ignore what they're doing or think, oh well, it doesn't really matter, it's not really them.""I think recognizing being a fit and free church, being well. Our well-being is not just about us as individuals. Have you ever heard the phrase that 'children always bounce back'? This is the topic Michelle discusses in today's episode, sharing her own story about how a broken home affected her own childhood. Michelle recounts her own experience of losing her mother at just four years old, being faced with multiple stepmothers and the sexualization she encountered both at home and at school. She discusses her own journey of healing, and the need for support and understanding in acknowledging childhood trauma.  KEY TAKEAWAYSChildren don't always bounce back from a broken home and the impact can last for a long time.Experiencing a broken home can have negative effects on a child's education and future.Sexualization of children, especially girls, can have long-lasting impacts on their lives.A broken home and the associated trauma can lead to self-destructive beliefs and insecurities. It takes time and effort, with the help of God, to heal from the effects of a broken home and turn disadvantages into advantages.BEST MOMENTS"We can't just do anything and behave any way we want in our families and expect a broken home to not negatively impact our children. That's just unfair.""To say that children just bounce back after they have lost one of their parents to divorce... is really a salve on the part of the parents, they want to make themselves feel better.""A broken home, a breakdown in the marriage and a breakdown in the family is a trauma. It's what we would call an adverse childhood event.""Trauma affects brain architecture. It actually affects the structure of the brain. It affects the neural pathways. And yes, God can heal that. But it can take years of working with God to understand why we feel the way we do as an adult who has been through a broken home as a child." "Please remember, children are children. They don't always just bounce back. Some of them go on to have some real problems and dependencies and have horrible insecurities."  VALUABLE RESOURCESEnjoying Healthy Living Facebook Surviving Trauma, Crisis & Grief Facebook Enjoying Healthy Living Instagram Survive Trauma Instagram  christianwellbeingshow.comABOUT THE HOSTMichelle is a master of transition and cross-cultural expert. In today's episode, Michelle discusses the fallacy of "food freedom" within the context of Christianity. She shares personal anecdotes from her childhood, highlighting the unhealthy eating habits she developed and the impact they had on her health. Michelle then explores the concept of freedom in Christ and how it should not be misconstrued as a license to indulge in unhealthy behaviors. She emphasizes the importance of common sense, good sense, and wisdom in making choices that promote physical and spiritual wellbeing. Michelle also addresses the misconception of "moderation in all things" and clarifies the biblical perspective on self-control and making wise decisions. KEY TAKEAWAYSThe concept of "food freedom" in Christianity can be controversial, as some believe that being set free in Christ means they can eat whatever they want without restrictions. While freedom in Christ means being set free from the law, it does not mean that everything is permissible or beneficial. Common sense, good sense, and wisdom should still guide our choices. The Holy Spirit is our leader and guide, not our taste buds. It is important to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit in making wise and healthful choices.God cares about our health and has given us the Holy Spirit to lead us in truth and in the things that are truly good for us. We can choose a healthy lifestyle and make choices that align with God's intention for our well-being.BEST MOMENTS"There was a culture of Christians believing that they now had freedom in Christ... It doesn't matter anymore. All those things are under the law. We're free now, aren't we?" "The Bible does talk about self-control... A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.""We are free to eat what we want. God won't stop us. But we're not free to eat what we want if we want to be healthy." "There's such a vast choice and array of healthy foods... There's such a wonderful choice of healthy foods available.""God really, really cares about our health... In this episode, Michelle delves into the topic of trauma, and emphasizes the importance of discussing it as a Christian. She acknowledges that, as Christian, there can be a tendency to downplay or ignore trauma, instead putting faith in God and Jesus. Michelle notes that trauma can affect us all regardless of religious beliefs, age, race, tribe, nation, or status. Drawing from personal experiences and examples from the Bible, Michelle encourages listeners to understand and address trauma, offering practical and spiritual steps for survival, healing, and supporting others.KEY TAKEAWAYSTrauma is a deeply disturbing, distressing, or frightening event that threatens one's feelings of safety and security.Trauma can affect anyone, regardless of age, race, religion, or social status.Trauma can have a profound impact on a person's physical, emotional, social, and mental well-being.The brain is affected by trauma, leading to changes in neural pathways and the release of stress chemicals.Healing from trauma is possible through the brain's neuroplasticity and the healing power of God.BEST MOMENTS"Trauma is an important topic. But why do we need to talk about it?" "Trauma affects different people differently. It depends very much on a person's history and personality." "Trauma overwhelms the emotions and the ability to cope. It disrupts normal functioning of the mind and it inhibits the ability to reason." "The brain has something called neuroplasticity. That means that the brain has the ability to heal and grow throughout life.""We can be healed from the effects of past trauma. They highlight the significance of believing in Jesus as Lord and Savior and the power of confession in His name. Michelle and Stuart also touch on the concept of discipleship and the ongoing process of learning and living out God's purposes. KEY TAKEAWAYSBecoming a Christian involves a heart transformation and a decision to make Jesus Lord and Savior.Repentance is a key aspect of becoming a Christian, involving a change of mind and a turning away from one's own ways.Believing in Jesus as the Son of God, who died for our sins and was raised from the dead, is essential for salvation.Confessing with one's mouth that Jesus is Lord is a powerful declaration of faith. The journey of being a Christian is a lifelong process of discipleship, learning to live according to God's ways and purposes.BEST MOMENTS"I've been a Christian for most of my lifetime, not my whole lifetime. Joined by co-host Stuart today, Michelle questions 'What Is Church?'. Both Michelle and Stuart have visited churches all across the world, experiencing different cultures. They discuss the different forms and structures of churches across the world, highlighting the similarities and differences to the one that are more familiar to them. This leads them to explore the historical context of church development, from the influence of Emperor Constantine to the Protestant Reformation. Stuart and Michelle touch on the concept of the Ecclesia, the gathering of believers with political implications, and the importance of worshiping in spirit and truth. They emphasize the need to reevaluate our understanding of church and consider its impact on society. KEY TAKEAWAYSThe term "church" has picked up various meanings and can differ from culture to culture. The traditional format of church gatherings, with a focus on a sermon and passive spectatorship, may not align with the New Testament model. The word "Ecclesia" used by Jesus refers to a gathering with political implications, where believers are called out to advance God's kingdom in society.Church should not be limited to a building or a weekly club-like gathering, but rather a community of believers impacting their communities and engaging in various spheres of society.BEST MOMENTS"Church has, over centuries now, has picked up quite a lot of baggage and can mean many different things to different people.""We've remarked on the fact that you can go to a tribal village, yeah, with a straw roof, but there's somebody at the front wearing sort of a Western shirt and tie and has his microphone and PA system." "We're not seeing, you know, if Jesus was to come to our meetings today, or even the Apostle Paul, I think we might be quite surprised at what the feedback would be."  VALUABLE RESOURCESEnjoying Healthy Living Facebook Surviving Trauma, Crisis & Grief Facebook Enjoying Healthy Living Instagram Survive Trauma Instagram  christianwellbeingshow.comABOUT THE HOSTMichelle is a master of transition and cross-cultural expert. In this episode, Michelle poses the question: Does God really care about your health?  God has many important priorities, such as salvation, evangelism, discipleship, and fulfilling His kingdom purposes. That being said, Michelle points out that Jesus, who represented the Father while on earth, placed a significant emphasis on healing and restoring people's health. Out of the 37 miracles Jesus performed, 26 of them were related to healing, whether physical or spiritual. Highlighting Jesus' role in the stories of individuals like the blind man and the bleeding woman, Michelle emphasizes that if Jesus prioritized health, it is because God values health too. KEY TAKEAWAYSGod cares about our health and healing. Jesus placed a significant emphasis on people's health and performed numerous healing miracles. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, and we should treat them with reverence and care.God is into preventative healthcare and wants us to learn how to prevent sickness by taking care of ourselves. It is important for us to prioritize our health and make time to learn and grow in better habits. We should not abuse the fact that God can heal us by neglecting our health and expecting Him to constantly heal us. Instead, we should strive to live a healthier lifestyle and listen to the wisdom of the Holy Spirit.BEST MOMENTS"He showed us what God was like. And in Hebrews 1.3, it says, he is the brightness of God's glory and the express image of his person." "Jesus went about healing people. He had great compassion for the sick and the suffering." "He didn't just heal individuals, He was healing crowds as well. Anybody who would believe, anybody who had faith, He healed them.""God does not make us sick. Episode #162. A fun faith filled talk with Alex Ann. I met Alex in front of Target in Pomona and it was great getting to hear more of her journey with God and life and some struggles with depression. We get into a great talk. I hope you enjoy! Alex's BIO: In the picturesque city of Riverside, California, Alex Ann's journey began as a curious soul, eager to unravel the mysteries of life. Her Christian upbringing nurtured a profound faith that would later become the foundation of her entire existence. Little did she know that her path would lead her on an extraordinary odyssey, ultimately discovering what she had known all along. As the years passed, she found herself entangled in the intricate dance of life's challenges and triumphs. In the depths of her darkest hours, when despair gnawed at her heart and thoughts of ending the pain consumed her, she discovered a lifeline. The divine grace of God reached out, pulling her from the abyss of hopelessness and despair. His love wrapped around her like a comforting embrace, guiding her toward a path of hope, healing, and purpose. Motivated by compassion, she embarked on a mission beyond the boundaries of self. "Sweater and Souls" was born, a non-profit endeavor that sought to clothe those shivering in the bitter cold with the warmth of not only tangible sweaters but the comforting warmth of the Gospel. In the pages of her upcoming book, "Author of Peace," Alex Ann lays bare the moments that etched her identity and the struggles that rigorously tested her faith. Within these lines, she exposes the profound peace that she found in the loving embrace of the Author of Peace Himself—God.  Follow Alex on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/alex1ann_only/ My links: http://loudernowpodcast.com/ I am looking for anyone and everyone who would please consider donating $5 a month to support the podcast financially. ST. CECILIA l PATRONESS OF MUSIC AND MUSICIANS Feast Day: NOVEMBER 22 I think all music lovers know St. Cecilia, the patroness of music and musicians. Today, we will listen to her very interesting and unique life story. She learned how to sing very early in life and used to sing the divine praises, accompanying her voice with the lute. Her image playing the piano or the pipe organ is just a representation since both instruments were invented only in the 14thcentury, while St. Cecilia was born about the year 200 or 230 A.D. Her Christian parents brought her up in the fear and love of God and she spent most of her time helping the poor and teaching others about God. She practiced her religion with much fidelity, and vowed her virginity to God. Her parents who did not know it, gave her in marriage to a pagan named Valerian. Thus, on her wedding day she was oblivious of what was happening and was singing to God to keep her pure and holy. On the night of their wedding, when they went to their wedding chamber, Cecilia revealed to Valerian that she was betrothed to an angel who jealously guarded her body from any human attempt to own her. Valerian, who was also kindhearted, asked her to show him the angel so that he could believe her. She promised to show the angel to him if he would be baptized. Valerian, arose quickly and went to the catacombs where the Christians were hiding and asked to be instructed, then was afterwards baptized. When he returned to their home, after a few days, he found Cecilia singing and beside her was an angel with flaming wings, who spoke to them and told them that they would be martyred and promised that God would reward them. When Tiburtius, the brother of Valerian, learned that he was baptized, he came to see him. His attention was caught by the fragrance of two wreaths which the angel brought to the couple. Tiburtius believed their story and asked to be also baptized. Soon, the two brothers began to minister to the needy and the persecuted Christians. They gave their wealth to the poor and gave descent burial to those who were killed. But their work became known to their pagan friends and neighbors. They were reported, arrested and executed. Cecilia took their bodies and buried them. Upon knowing this, the Roman prefect had Cecilia arrested, and tried to persuade her to deny her faith. When she refused, she was placed in a heated bathroom in her own home, but she survived. After three days, an executioner tried to cut her head with a sword; she was wounded but did not die. She was in pain for another three days and then died a glorious death. Her friends and neighbors sang to comfort her while she was dying. Miracles followed after her burial. During those early days, there was no official canonization yet. The person who lived a charitable and heroic life was proclaimed a saint, and those who were killed for their faith were proclaimed martyrs by the people. Cecilia was buried in the catacomb of St. Callixtus and was later transferred to Rome in the basilica that bears her name. Her feast day is November 22. ”St. Cecilia, patroness of music and musicians, guide today's generation to compose decent and useful songs and to avoid singing morally inappropriate songs.” What kind of songs do I enjoy singing and listening to?

Be ready because we might ask you to be a guest on the show. The Amerikan Therapy team takes a brave new step and announces a major change in the show. While we will ALWAYS bring a uniquely black perspective, because that's just what we are, we have decided to expand our show to include "ALL" people. We are taking this important step because we see that our reach goes well outside of our own community and there is a need for our voices across the entirety of the mental health landscape. Knowing that we are bringing our brand of "Black Girl Magic" to help inspire healing for all peoples means we are going to go even "harder in the paint". That also means we are expanding the scope of our guests and topics. Now that said, America's persistent problem of racism will always be on our menu and at the forefront of our show. IF we can't speak about it and bring it out of the dark, then we certainly can't heal it. So this week's episode of Amerikan Therapy brought some new "white" voices to our virtual therapist couch. We connected with two woke white women (they hate that term by the way) to discuss being a white ally for social and racial justice. We talk about Karen and them and even get into what white people can do to begin their own healing. This is the first of many cross-community conversations.   Chronic pain in your body. Negative emotions and stress. Energy. Kandace Lopez shares exactly how interrelated these aspects of your health and well-being are—and how integral it is to understand the energetic interconnection in order to overcome chronic pain, illness, and just overall pave the way to better health and wellness. I met Kandace through my Pilates teacher training in Dallas and quickly discovered what a multi-modal, intuitive healer she is. Her current focus is on bodywork, more specifically, myofascial release. She is also a master trainer in classical Pilates, the Gyrotonic Expansion System, and reiki. She incorporates these tools in her practice, as well as microcurrent and Amino Neuro Frequency patches… and probably a whole lot more by now. Kandace is such a quick learner and always has her hands on some new learning experience, and this was my second ever interview !! which was recorded in March. I should also note that we recorded this interview right after she did bodywork on me and it is crazy how different my energy and my voice sounds. She is magic!   IN THIS EPISODE WE TALK ABOUT:  What got Kandace started on her healing journey How her education in each healing modality has shaped her life and her work as a healer How humans store their emotions in their bodies (and how our body is so much smarter than our mind—it never lies) Kandace’s experience in working with trauma and energy through bodywork How Kandace’s work with others has helped her further heal herself Why Kandace doesn’t believe that we ever take on other peoples’ energy Her Christian faith and how she perceives the link between spirituality and energy Plus much more…   RESOURCES FROM THIS EPISODE Mentioned: Organifi Green Juice (Code: BRYANNA15) Anatomy Trains, by Thomas W. Myers Gyrotonic Expansion System Myofascial Release Rife Therapies Pilates’ Return to Life Through Contrology, by Joseph H. Pilates and William Miller Amino Neuro Frequency Therapy   Connect with Kandace Lopez: Website: Infinity Integrative Movement Facebook: Kandace Lopez   QUOTES   “Trauma leaves an energetic mark on your body, and I think that you have to constantly balance that out.”   “Every experience you’ve ever had in your entire life isn’t just an outward experience, it’s an inward experience too. It’s all of those emotional things that create a visceral response in your body.”   “People who have had chronic pain or have been injured, you will start to see that when they move through a certain range of motion there is a complete lock down of the whole entire body. They have been injured doing that at some point before so now every time their body goes back through that, it’s afraid it is going to happen again.”   “So, even when doing Pilates you’re doing fascial work and you’re starting to help the body disassociate between movement and trauma.”   “You're only as old as your spine.”   “When you have been beat up over, and over, and over again, or you’re trying so hard to guard and protect yourself, you do it by creating a physical barrier. So I wasn’t just hard on the outside, my body was in pain too. Chronic pain always has an emotional component.”   LET’S CONNECT Website: Bryannadee.com Instagram: @bryanna_dee Facebook: Facebook.com/bryannadee Pinterest: Pinterest.com/bryannadee/

My guest today is Vilmarie Perez. Her father was a preacher, her step-father a pastor and her aunt had her own church. Raised in a strong evangelical family, she begins to experience some real difficulties in adolescence.  Her Christian upbringing leads to a desire to become "less" for God and family. She develops an eating disorder. In the next year or two she comes out to her mother and also becomes an atheist. Her mother forces her to move from the States back to Puerto Rico with her father. This is traumatic for Vilmarie, as she leaves behind her friends and the life she knows.  I was inspired by her story and you will be too!
