A place to protest without the shame of needing to be grateful, or being told that you should return to your homeland. Phuong spoke to STAMPED zine's founder and project coordinator, René Hà, who describes themselves as a former 'cash cow' and was based in Gadigal land with a keen interest in identity making in the context of ethno-nationalism and postcolonial effects. They have recently relocated to their home city of Ho Chi Minh city. 323. Navigating Pharmacy IT - Lessons Learned From an Informatics Team Panel Discussion feat. Drs. Aaron Tse, Phuong Wood, and Kevin Tien Intended Audience: Everyone I'm excited to share highlights from an insightful new episode featuring a panel discussion with my colleagues, Drs. Aaron Tse, Phuong Wood, and Kevin Tian. This episode brings you lessons learned from seasoned informatics pharmacists, reflecting on years of experience and the ever-evolving landscape of pharmacy IT. Key Takeaways & Lessons Learned: If It Can Break, It Probably Will Kevin underscores the importance of thoughtful proofing of IT systems and workflows. Everything must be robustly validated and meticulously documented because, as he puts it, “users will always find a way around things—whether intentionally or not!” ➡️ Documentation is your safety net for when things go awry or users take unanticipated shortcuts. The Power of Knowing the Full Process Phuong shares how understanding workflows from start to finish is crucial. Her experience managing medication billing and troubleshooting claim rejections revealed just how important it is to grasp the entire process—not just your silo. ➡️ The more you know about upstream and downstream effects, the better you can problem-solve and support your colleagues. Don't Take “No” for an Answer Aaron encourages all informatics professionals not to settle for the first “no”—especially from vendors or even within your own IT teams. Always dig deeper: is it a technical limitation, a resource issue, or simply a lack of knowledge? ➡️ Keep asking—sometimes solutions are possible with a little persistence! Consistency & Team Cohesion The group discusses the importance of having a unified approach as a team. Even when documentation is lacking, shared values and consistent methods ensure smooth handoffs and reliable support for end users. A final piece of advice is everyone should always be open to learning, prioritize effectively, and—above all—never forget you're a pharmacist first. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Analyzing DeepMind's Probabilistic Methods for Evaluating Agent Capabilities, published by Axel Højmark on July 22, 2024 on The AI Alignment Forum. Produced as part of the MATS Program Summer 2024 Cohort. The project is supervised by Marius Hobbhahn and Jérémy Scheurer Introduction To mitigate risks from future AI systems, we need to assess their capabilities accurately. Ideally, we would have rigorous methods to upper bound the probability of a model having dangerous capabilities, even if these capabilities are not yet present or easily elicited. The paper "Evaluating Frontier Models for Dangerous Capabilities" by Phuong et al. 2024 is a recent contribution to this field from DeepMind. It proposes new methods that aim to estimate, as well as upper-bound the probability of large language models being able to successfully engage in persuasion, deception, cybersecurity, self-proliferation, or self-reasoning. This post presents our initial empirical and theoretical findings on the applicability of these methods. Their proposed methods have several desirable properties. Instead of repeatedly running the entire task end-to-end, the authors introduce milestones. Milestones break down a task and provide estimates of partial progress, which can reduce variance in overall capability assessments. The expert best-of-N method uses expert guidance to elicit rare behaviors and quantifies the expert assistance as a proxy for the model's independent performance on the task. However, we find that relying on milestones tends to underestimate the overall task success probability for most realistic tasks. Additionally, the expert best-of-N method fails to provide values directly correlated with the probability of task success, making its outputs less applicable to real-world scenarios. We therefore propose an alternative approach to the expert best-of-N method, which retains its advantages while providing more calibrated results. Except for the end-to-end method, we currently feel that no method presented in this post would allow us to reliably estimate or upper bound the success probability for realistic tasks and thus should not be used for critical decisions. The overarching aim of our MATS project is to uncover agent scaling trends, allowing the AI safety community to better predict the performance of future LLM agents from characteristics such as training compute, scaffolding used for agents, or benchmark results (Ruan et al., 2024). To avoid the issue of seemingly emergent abilities resulting from bad choices of metrics (Schaeffer et al., 2023), this work serves as our initial effort to extract more meaningful information from agentic evaluations. We are interested in receiving feedback and are particularly keen on alternative methods that enable us to reliably assign low-probability estimates (e.g. 1e7) to a model's success rate on a task. Evaluation Methodology of Phuong et al. The goal of the evaluations we discuss is to estimate the probability of an agent succeeding on a specific task T . Generally, when we refer to an agent, we mean an LLM wrapped in scaffolding that lets it execute shell commands, run code, or browse the web to complete some predetermined task. Formally, the goal is to estimate P(Ts), the probability that the agent solves task T and ends up in the solved state Ts . The naive approach to estimate this is with Monte Carlo sampling: The authors call this the end-to-end method. However, the end-to-end method struggles with low-probability events. The expected number of trials needed to observe one success for a task is 1P(Ts) making naive Monte Carlo sampling impractical for many low-probability, long-horizon tasks. In practice, this could require running multi-hour tasks hundreds of thousands of times. To address this challenge, Phuong et al. devise three addi...

Against Japanism

Maya and Kota sit down with Le Phuong Anh to talk about the struggle of Vietnamese migrant workers and international students in Japan. Anh is a PhD student at the graduate school of Asia Pacific Studies at Waseda University, whose research interest is in Migration Studies and international student mobility, as well as Vietnamese middle skill migrant workers in Japan. She is the co-author of Against the ‘Japanese Dream': Vietnamese Student Workers in Japan published in Asian Labour Review in December 2022. According to Japan's Ministry of Labour, as of 2023, Vietnamese workers constituted 25% of all migrant workforce in Japan totaling two million, the highest number on record. They constitute 51.8% of a group of migrants working under a visa called the Technical Internship program. Anh specifically highlights the experience of so-called “Technical Interns' ' who are misleadingly categorized as “interns,' ' but in practice are imported and exploited as the source of cheap labour. We also discuss the plight of Vietnamese international students who are in a relatively less precarious position than the technical interns, but still experience downward class mobility due to indebtedness and having to cover the cost of living and tuition fees for profit driven private language schools. We discuss the intersection between migrant and reproductive justice issues through the case of Le Thi Tuy Lin, a Vietnamese woman and technical intern who was criminalized and acquitted for abandoning her stillborn twins, and other topics as such as the media's role in enabling anti-migrant, anti-Vietnamese racism, and the root cause of forced labour migration. We conclude our discussion by talking about how migrants and their supporters are fighting back against migrant exploitation and Japan's unjust migration policies.UPDATE: In February, the Japanese government announced it is ending the Technical Internship program and replacing it with a new program whereby workers will be conditionally allowed to switch jobs after two years of their arrival. Under the new program, workers will be allowed to apply for Specified Skill Workers (SSW) Type 1 Visa, which allows workers to stay in Japan for five years, and SSW Type 2  Visa, which allows workers to stay in Japan indefinitely and bring their families.  This is an important victory and a product of tireless campaigning and mobilizing that migrant rights organizations undertook to bring light to this issue and fight for migrant justice. However, the fight is not over yet and it's too early to tell if the announced change will actually be codified into law and protect the workers from abuse within the two years they will not be allowed to change their employers. Furthermore, the Japanese government is currently proposing a bill to make it easier to revoke permanent residency of migrants if they fail to pay taxes and social insurance security premiums, or become convicted of a crime for up to one year of imprisonment. This would effectively render permanent residency meaningless. More importantly, as long as Japan remains capitalist and an imperialist nation complicit in the underdevelopment of colonial and semi-colonial nations through the World Bank, IMF, and the US-led wars as we're currently witnessing in Palestine, there will always be migrants and refugees coming to Japan, and capitalists seeking super-profit though the exploitation of cheap migrant labour. In other words, unless imperialism as the root cause of forced migration is addressed, there will never be genuine migrant justice in the Global North.Intro: Cielo by Huma HumaOutro: ImmiGang II by Moment Joon Support the show

We discuss the importance of learning from customer behavior, gathering a small group of dedicated users, setting clear objectives, tracking engagement metrics, and using various feedback methods like observing user interactions and conducting interviews and surveys. We emphasize the need to iterate based on user feedback and avoiding falling in love with the product over solving the identified problem. I aim to underscore the importance of solving for "no" rather than seeking only positive outcomes. Phuong highlights the significance of sticking to validated pain points and suggests silently observing users to understand their true interactions with the product. Overall, it's a valuable discussion on the iterative process of refining MVPs based on user feedback.Links:Follow us on Twitter: @mpd, @interplay, Podcast Links: Website, YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn

DESCRIPTIONThis discussion revolves around what Phuong and I believe to be the essential qualities of a successful founder. We emphasize four key traits: grit, consistent execution, humility, and integrity. Phuong highlights how successful founders possess unwavering determination despite setbacks, actively learn from failures, execute plans effectively, remain open to feedback, and prioritize ethical decision-making, understanding its impact on the business long-term. I personally stress the importance of acknowledging and learning from failures while emphasizing the necessity of getting back up after setbacks. We both agree that these characteristics outweigh factors like education, wealth, or intelligence in determining success. The discussion concludes by underscoring the enduring significance of these traits for founders navigating the complexities of entrepreneurship.Links:Follow us on Twitter: @mpd, @interplayPodcast Links: Website, YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn

DESCRIPTIONThis week, Phuong and I are discussing pricing strategies. Pricing plays a critical role in various aspects of your business. You can either position yourself as the lowest or highest price player in the market, while being in the middle can cause confusion for customers.Deciding whether you want a high or low volume business is essential. Choose a pricing model that aligns with your value proposition, such as monthly, annual, metered pricing, or revenue share. Ensure your pricing aligns with your overall business strategy, focusing on either high price and high quality or low price and high volume, but avoid mixing the two for the best results.Links:Follow us on Twitter: @mpd, @interplay Podcast Links: Website, YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn
