Novinka Na tripu: Nacisté, CIA a úsvit psychedelického věku mapuje o něco známější historii LSD a také magických hub a psilocybinu.

Back for solo episode 7. I dive into techniques on how to improve your memory—sharing tips that have helped me to remember names and lists.I also give my take on the recent election, with a bit of humor and a bot of speculation. Plus, there's a story from my trip to Vietnam, where I had eye-opening experiences. For example, I was told the "American War" is not to be talked about in North Vietnam. In the last episode, I touched on the origins of heroin. Here I mention the article I wrote about how the Nazis used methamphetamine to fuel their wartime aggression—a shocking discovery from Norman Ohler's Blitzed, which is a must-read for anyone curious about World War II's lesser-known history.
Back for consecutive solo episode 6 from New Orleans. I share some of what I learned from a mind-blowing book I just finished—Blitzed by Norman Ohler. It's a fascinating look at how the rise of modern societies is as intertwined with the drug trade as much as technological advances.I had no idea until now—but some people believe humanity's origins were fueled by drugs. It's wild!I also talk about baseball, basketball & football cards, sharing a story from my card-collecting days. Turns out, winning a homerun derby at 10 years old scored me some valuable cards—including the Carl Yastrzemskii with sideburns.

The cultural attitudes towards drugs differ between Germany and the US, with Germany being more conservative and less informed about psychedelics. LSD was initially developed as a medicine by a Swiss pharmaceutical company, and its potential therapeutic uses are still being explored. The CIA's involvement with LSD was driven by the fear of its use as a truth serum and the desire to manipulate individuals. Accessing archives and original sources is crucial for accurate historical research, but it can be challenging to find specific information. LSD was discovered by Albert Hoffman and initially developed by the pharmaceutical company Sandoz as a potential stimulant for the mind. The discovery of LSD led to research on its potential therapeutic benefits, including its use in treating depression and other mental health conditions. The political and societal climate of the time, including Nazi Germany and the Cold War, influenced the perception and regulation of LSD. There is a need for more research and understanding of psychedelics, including their potential benefits and risks, in order to make informed decisions about their use. Set and setting, as well as responsible use, are important factors to consider when taking psychedelics.

In this episode, Joe interviews Norman Ohler: award-winning novelist, screenwriter, and journalist. Following in the footsteps of Blitzed: Drugs in the Third Reich, his newest book, Tripped: Nazi Germany, the CIA, and the Dawn of the Psychedelic Age, tells the story of how the Nazi's passion for methamphetamine turned into a curiosity about LSD, and how their experiments with trying to harness LSD as a truth drug eventually led to the CIA continuing their research under their MKUltra program. The book came about from trying to understand why LSD never became medicine – a question posed by his father, when discussing how LSD could help with his wife's progressing Alzheimer's symptoms. He discusses: His path to becoming a “gonzo historian” and how his early psychedelic research was inspired by a friend's discovery of methamphetamine tablets from the 40s Henry Beecher's LSD experiments with students at Harvard, and how researchers often didn't know they were contributing to MKUltra His recent appearances on The Joe Rogan Experience and Jesse Watters Primetime His mother's experience with microdosing LSD and why police showed up at his father's door with a warrant Why he believes psychedelics will be legalized in the U.S. in the next 10 years and more! Norman Ohler's latest work, "Tripped: Nazi Germany, the CIA, and the Dawn of the Psychedelic Age," delves into the shadowy history of LSD, tracing its origins from the laboratories of Nazi Germany to its pivotal role in shaping U.S. drug policy through the CIA's MKUltra program. This book explores how the Nazis' initial interest in psychedelics for mind control evolved into a tool for psychological warfare, eventually influencing America's stance on psychedelic drugs during the Cold War. Ohler's meticulous research uncovers the hidden connections between these historical adversaries, revealing how the quest for a 'truth serum' and mind control techniques not only delayed therapeutic psychedelic research but also laid foundational elements for the War on Drugs. "Tripped" continues Ohler's theme of examining history through the lens of substance use, offering a provocative narrative that challenges conventional historical narratives and highlights the profound impact of drug policy on societal development. They discuss the history of pharmaceuticals and the early research on LSD, including its origins in Nazi Germany and its use by the American military and intelligence agencies. The negative consequences of the war on drugs and the need for a more responsible approach to substances are highlighted. The potential benefits of microdosing LSD and its effects on mental health are explored. LSD was explored by the CIA as a potential truth serum and mind-control tool, but it did not meet their expectations. LSD can provide therapeutic benefits when used in a controlled and supportive environment, allowing individuals to gain insights into themselves and the world around them. The CIA's involvement with LSD led to its spread in the cultural scene, particularly during the 1960s and 70s, where it became associated with the anti-war movement. The American government made LSD illegal due to its popularity and perceived threat to their war plans, but illegal LSD chemists continued to supply the substance. LSD has shown promise in reducing neuroinflammation and enhancing neuroplasticity, making it a potential treatment for neurodegenerative diseases. The rejection of psychedelic medicines by regulatory bodies like the FDA is seen as a hindrance to progress and a reflection of the influence of pharmaceutical companies. The erosion of democracy and the current political climate are seen as obstacles to the psychedelic revolution that could lead to positive societal change. The little-known story of how Nazi experiments into psychedelics covertly influenced the CIA and shaped the foundation of America's war on drugs has been told in the new book by best-selling author Norman Ohler. Following on from the themes in his 2015 book Blitzed, which looked at methamphetamine use by the Third Reich, new book Tripped examines how the Nazis experimented with LSD at Dachau in efforts to find a "truth serum". When the US liberated Germany, they discovered the research which led to the CIA's notorious brainwashing and psychological torture program of the 1950s and 1960s. Only now is LSD starting to gain mainstream acceptance for uses such as treating anxiety.

LSD has been banned in the United States for decades and became a Schedule 1 Controlled Substance in 1970, but it has experienced a resurgence among Silicon Valley entrepreneurs to overcome mental roadblocks and psychiatrists running tests to use it as a treatment for addiction, PTSD, and other mental illnesses. But what few know is that LSD has its origins in Nazi Germany. The drug was developed in Switzerland in 1943 and quickly acquired and militarized by the Third Reich. The Nazis coopted LSD for their mind control military research—research that the US was desperate to acquire. This research birthed MKUltra, the CIA's notorious brainwashing and psychological torture program during the 1950s and 1960s.Today's guest is Norman Ohler, author of “Tripped: Nazi Germany, the CIA, and the Dawn of the Psychedelic Age.” We discuss:· How the history of LSD is interwoven with that of the Cold War and its arms race, and how the US government's introduction to LSD through Nazi research influenced much of the federal government's early attitudes around it· How, in addition to LSD's militarized misconception from the Nazis, there were other areasof US drug policy influenced by the Third Reich for over half a century· How psychedelic research was marginalized and stigmatized for so long by prohibition and the War on Drugs, and how high the hurdles remain today for approval of psychedelic medicine, despite the opportunities—rather than dangers—they represent

In TRIPPED: Nazi Germany, the CIA, and the Dawn of the Psychedelic Age (Mariner Books; on sale April 9), Norman Ohler, New York Times bestselling author of Blitzed: Drugs in the Third Reich, returns with a provocative new history of drugs and postwar America, exposing the hidden connections between the Nazis and the early days of drugs in the United States. Based on extensive archival research on both sides of the Atlantic, TRIPPED examines how fascist experiments into psychedelics covertly influenced CIA research and secretly shaped America's War on Drugs. As Ohler reveals, "When most people think of LSD, they don't think of the Nazis, and yet that unseen hand played a role in framing our laws around this class of drug and in limiting our ability to use psychedelics for medical research." In fact, Ohler was inspired to explore this topic as a result of his own mother's medical condition. His father wanted to know why he couldn't just get LSD at the pharmacy for his wife if it was supposed to help treat her Alzheimer's disease. It was this question-why can't patients in need of psychedelic therapy access it?-that launched Ohler on his investigation for TRIPPED. Unlike cannabis which is on the precipice of global legalization, psychedelic substances containing promising healing potential are still bound up with taboos. With TRIPPED, Ohler aims to alleviate the fear and disinformation around these drugs by educating readers on the untold story behind them.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.
Tripped: Nazi Germany, the CIA, and the Dawn of the Psychedelic Age by Norman Ohler https://amzn.to/3PWxLlE The author of the New York Times bestseller Blitzed returns with a provocative new history of drugs and postwar America, examining the untold story of how Nazi experiments into psychedelics covertly influenced CIA research and secretly shaped the War on Drugs. Berlin 1945. Following the fall of the Third Reich, drug use—long kept under control by the Nazis' strict anti-drug laws—is rampant throughout the city. Split into four sectors, Berlin's drug policies are being enforced under the individual jurisdictions of each allied power—the Soviet Union, Britain, France, and the US. In the American zone, Arthur J. Giuliani of the nascent Federal Bureau of Narcotics is tasked with learning about the Nazis' anti-drug laws and bringing home anything that might prove “useful” to the United States. Five years later, Harvard professor Dr. Henry Beecher began work with the US government to uncover the research behind the Nazis psychedelics program. Begun as an attempt to find a “truth serum” and experiment with mind control, the Nazi study initially involved mescaline, but quickly expanded to include LSD. Originally created for medical purposes by Swiss pharmaceutical Sandoz, the Nazis coopted the drug for their mind control military research—research that, following the war, the US was desperate to acquire. This research birthed MKUltra, the CIA's notorious brainwashing and psychological torture program during the 1950s and 1960s, and ultimately shaped US drug policy regarding psychedelics for over half a century. Based on extensive archival research on both sides of the Atlantic, Tripped is a wild, unconventional postwar history, a spiritual sequel to Norman Ohler's New York Times bestseller Blitzed. Revealing the close relationship and hidden connections between the Nazis and the early days of drugs in America, Ohler shares how this secret history held back therapeutic research of psychedelic drugs for decades and eventually became part of the foundation of America's War on Drugs.About the author Norman Ohler is an award-winning German novelist, screenwriter, and journalist. He spent five years researching Blitzed in numerous archives in Germany and the United States, and spoke to eye-witnesses, military historians, and doctors. He is also the author of the novels Die Quotenmaschine (the world's first hypertext novel), Mitte and Stadt des Goldes (translated into English as Ponte City). He was co-writer of the script for Wim Wenders' film Palermo Shooting.
Matt Crawford speaks with author Norman Ohler about his book, Tripped: Nazi Germany, the CIA, and the Dawn of the Psychedelic Age. Tripped, traces the roots of LSD to Germany during WWII and the Nazi's nefarious experiments to use it for mind control to the CIA's own interest in it for similar purposes. All the while the U.S government pushing the narrative that it was a dangerous drug and ignoring its benefits. Ohler highlights the corrupt U.S drug policies and the lack of scientific study that could have helped so many, to his own family's experimentation with it to treat his mother's dementia. As always Ohler does not disappoint, and this is impossible to put down.

Another busy day in today's strange new world. We begin today with breaking news from my adopted state of Arizona where we moved from Floriduh because AZ was a bit less fascist... Well, today the AZ Supreme Extreme Court upheld an 1864 near total ban on abortions. The only exception is to save the life of the mother. Yeah, I'll have a few words on that one to start today's show. While we're on the subject of abortion, the orange weather vane backtracked on his promise of a national abortion ban yesterday only to be criticized by some of magaT world, including the sycophantic Lindsey Graham. TFG lashed out so Lindsey did what Lindsey does and dropped to his knees to do magaman's bidding. You can't make this shit up. Then, I'll speak with the author of a new book hits the shelves today. TRIPPED: NAZI GERMANY, THE CIA, AND THE DAWN OF THE PSYCHEDELIC ERA by author Norman Ohler recounts the reason psychedelic drugs are classified as dangerous narcotics. Of course, one need look no further than the Nazis. Figures. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nicolesandler/message

In TRIPPED, his intriguing new history of drugs and postwar America, the German writer Norman Ohler makes LSD both a symbol and a metaphor for the history of the Cold War. Linking Nazi Germany, the CIA with what he calls “the dawn” of the psychedelic age, Ohler presents LSD — the revolutionary psychedelic drug invented by the Swiss pharma giant Sandoz which the Nazi tested as a “truth serum” in Dachau — as a weapon used by the American military-industrial complex to fight the Soviets. As with most anti Soviet CIA plots, of course, it was a bit of a farce - although Ohler's thesis certainly offers an alternative way of interpreting trippy Cold War movies like Doctor Strangelove and The Manchurian Candidate. And Ohler reminds us of the psychedelic age's most lasting legacy - its influence on West Coast countercultural figures like Ken Kesey, Stewart Brand and Steve Jobs and their invention of the personal computer and internet.Norman Ohler is an award-winning novelist, screenwriter, and journalist. Podcast-Tipp: Was geht - was bleibt? Zeitgeist. Debatten. Kultur.
