Mother, Métis, Memory is a documentary film by Tuấn Andrew Nguyễn, whose practice is fueled by research and a commitment to communities that have faced traumas caused by colonialism, war, and displacement. Through his continuous attempts to engage with vanishing or vanquished historical memory, Tuấn investigates the erasures that the colonial project has brought to bear on certain parts of the world. Mother, Métis, Memory is a documentary that captures interviews conducted in 2018 with the Senegalese-Vietnamese communities in Dakar and Malika Senegal. Throughout the First Indochina War, between 1945-1954, France had mobilized an estimated 60,000 tirailleurs in Vietnam. Tirailleurs, or Senegalese soldiers, were a corps of colonial infantry in the French Army and among the forces deployed to Indochina to combat the Vietnamese uprising against French rule. After the beginning of the end of the French Empire, hundreds of Vietnamese women and their children migrated to West Africa with Senegalese husbands, some voluntarily but others against their will. Some soldiers left their wives and took only their children, while others took children not their own and raised them in Senegal without connection to their Vietnamese origins.  This interview was part of a film screening event hosted by Vietnamese Boat People and Co-sponsored by Asian/Pacific/American Institute at New York University during Tuấn's first USA solo exhibition Radiant Remembrance opened on June 29, 2023 at the New Museum 235 Bowery in New York City.  Photo: Taken from Mother, Métis, Memory Episode Credits: Executive Producer: Tracey Nguyễn Mang Associate Producer: Saoli Nguyen VBP Theme Music: Clarity, Paulina Vo Other Music: Na, SILLABA; Lysithea, CANDELION

One woman's hope to encourage others to break their silence and share their stories. Lea Tran's journey to freedom didn't end when she left VietNam and arrived in the United States in 1980 as one of many Boat People refugees. She was an adolescent girl stuck between two cultures and continents for many decades. Although Lea was free from tyranny and oppression, the emotional bonds of guilt and responsibility kept her from being truly free. After forty years, Lea learns that freedom is not only a place but also a state of mind and inner peace. By sharing her memoir "I Did Not Miss the Boat," she chooses to step out of the victim mindset to live an empowered, authentic life. Lea believes everyone has a story, a life lesson we can learn from. "Extracting from her multi-faceted cultural and life experiences, Lea motivates her audience to bridge the gaps of cultural differences, to take action to break the mold of generational suffering, and to create their own opportunity to speak their voice, live their truth."Connect with Jenny and Dan:Website: www.muscatellministries.comInstagram: www.instagram.com/jennymuscatellFacebook: www.facebook.com/JenMuscatellYoutube: www.youtube.com/channel/UChqkdrquJOuZMPRsCszwEqgLinkedin: www.linkedin.com/in/jennymuscatell/Twitter: twitter.com/JennyMuscatellBuy the Book: The Journey of Faith and an Open HeartConnect with Lea:Website: leatran.comFacebook: www.facebook.com/LeaTranSpeakerAndCoachInstagram: www.instagram.com/ididnotmisstheboatYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/c/LeaTranSpeakerAndCoachBuy the Book: I Did Not Miss the Boat

In the latest episode of the Empowerography Podcast, my guest is Nishah Dennison. Nishah was born in Adelaide, Australia, and moved to Cambridge UK, at the age of five. Her parents were entrepreneurs, which was unusual back then. They had a thriving business and strong work ethic. Nishah was a child of mixed marriage (mother Thai, father English) at a time where being different was unusual and the term ‘half-cast' was used. She was raised Buddhist, her parents had met each other at the Cambridge Buddhist Society, a group her father set up. “On Christmas day we would meditate, and most days began with morning chanting as a routine. As a family we did things like set fish free in a local river to accrue collective good karma. Around 1997 we adopted a Vietnamese family during the Vietnamese Boat People crisis, enabling them to eventually set up their own business. This spiritual upbringing impacted me and I am grateful for this influence. However, I found my own spiritual path, becoming a meditation teacher (kundalini) and energy healer as an adult”. The stories we share on Vietnamese Boat People are often harrowing tales of people surviving adversities and finding strength and resilience to move forward. Diving into their family histories and trauma, our interviewees can all be described as brave and introspective. And the same can also be said about our listeners. Over the years, listeners have reached out to us sharing how the podcast has given them a newfound connection with the culture. Our desire to bring people together to share stories and experiences, along with inspiration from podcasting colleagues Self Evident and PRX, led us to organize the first VBP listening party (kinda like a book club!).  Several members of the VBP team met up virtually to listen to and discuss episode 31: The Escape. It was our first time doing this as a group, and the experience was recorded in order to serve as a guide for anyone who wishes to do something similar. Our conversation became a deep dive into one of the most intricate stories we've featured, as well as a behind-the-scenes discussion about how the episode came together. We hope this inspires you to host your own listening party with students, communities or just with friends and families.   Featuring: Tracey Nguyen Mang, Saoli Nguyen, Matt Young, Bella Nguyen, Anthony Nguyen, and Brandon Nguyen The video version of this episode can be found on the VBP YouTube channel and on our videocast page. Breaking Barriers Through Conversations: The Making of the Vietnamese Boat People Podcast. Bonus Episode, Seven Million Bikes: a Saigon-based podcast hosted by Niall Mackay, originally from Scotland, who now lives in Saigon. The podcast shares experiences of people from all walks of life, who have a love and deep connection to Vietnam.  Tracey Nguyen Mang, the founder and creator of the Vietnamese Boat People, chats with Niall about her family's background from Vietnam to America. She came to America as a refugee, only 3 years old at the time, and the youngest of seven children. After a modest and humble start in America, Tracey built a successful career in the corporate world, but she realized that while providing more for her children than she ever had, she was distancing them from the values that she had been brought up with. As Tracey became a mother, she wanted to know more about her history so she could share it with her children. So she bought a microphone, and sat with her parents and older siblings to record what they remembered.  The stories enthralled her as she learned untold details of her family's escape. In this episode Tracey shares how 20 hours of family recordings led to the creation of the Vietnamese Boat People Podcast.  For the full conversation between Niall and Tracey, visit Seven Million Bikes Podcast.

This is a special PodSwap Episode of A Vietnam Podcast where we share Tracey's family story in the first ever episode of the Vietnamese Boat People podcast. The Vietnamese Boat People podcast shares stories of hope, survival and resilience. Between 1975 to 1992, almost two million Vietnamese risked their lives to flee oppression and hardship after the Vietnam War, in one of the largest mass exoduses in modern history. Escaping by boat, many found freedom in foreign land, many were captured and brutally punished, and many did not survive the journey. This population of people are known as the ‘Vietnamese Boat People‘.We've been fortunate enough to share the stories of Vietnamese Boat People and their children. These are often traumatic yet inspiring and we recommend listening to previous episodes from many of our guests from Tracey Nguyen, Tam Le and Sahra Nguyen in the US, Zoonie Nguyen in Canada to Nhi Mai from Switzerland and Levi Oi from Germany. Enjoy this episode, and don't forget to follow Seven Million Bikes and also the Vietnamese Boat People Podcast. EnjoyThe Vietnamese Boat People #1 - Prelude |10/8/2018Hi I'm Tracey Nguyen Mang. I was just under four years old when my Mom organized an escaped from the Vietnamese Communist regime in 1981. With nothing but clothes on our backs, she left everything behind and took three girls under the age of 10, deep into the jungle in the middle of the night, and eventually out into the treacherous seas. Thirty-seven years later, I'm on a mission to document every part of that escape and the events and turmoil that led my family and many others to choose the possibility of death if it meant freedom and safety on the other side.Join the Seven Million Bikes Community for exclusive member benefits AND a FREE 6-pack of Fuzzy Logic Craft Lager or the award-winning Thunderslap IPA. The Vietnamese Boat People

My name is Tracey Nguyen Mang, I am the creator of the Vietnamese Boat People podcast. I was born Nguyen Quan Truong-Anh, the youngest of seven children, in Nha Trang Vietnam. When I was only one, my father and oldest brother fled our country by boat. After that, my three older brothers escaped, and in 1981, my mother braved the journey with three girls under the age of 10. Three separate escapes, three different refugee camps and three years later, reunited in America as one family. This statement oversimplifies the journey. But the story of how we got here, is anything but simple. Join me in documenting the incredible stories of hundreds of thousands of other Vietnamese Boat People. Subscribe to the show and visit www.vietnameseboatpeople.org

Julie McConnell sits down with Julia Ha and Tammy Tran from Project Yellow Dress (PYD) to talk about how underrepresented communities are gaining visibility through self-expressed artistic mediums. We start the podcast getting to know the two PYD founders who talk about their family history (fun fact: they are second cousins). Their family experienced a double diaspora having to escape China and Vietnam because of warfare, and as a result, have traveled to many different countries in search of a new place to call home. We move on to hear about the lightbulb moment when a children's book on the Holocaust inspired them to start PYD. Recognizing how taking ownership of one's history is so crucial for communities who are often overlooked in history textbooks and mainstream media, they created PYD as a platform to encourage silenced individuals to share their stories through whatever medium they desire. This is a community of people who are flipping the script as they do advocacy in their own way. Yes, Asians can be artists. They can be whoever they want to be. It is so important for them to be able to feel like the protagonist of their story, to celebrate the fact that they are a refugee or a child of a refugee, especially in today's political climate. We close out the podcast with takeaways that touch upon an increasing need for ethnic studies courses. Because learning about people’s history helps us understand one another and ourselves, it is so important to recognize how and where ethnic studies is being taught and improve on that. "Know history, know self. No history, no self." Project Yellow Dress is a storytelling platform that is dedicated to sharing and highlighting the histories, experiences, and voices of the Southeast Asian diaspora. The Vietnamese Boat People were a series of refugees that fled Communist Vietnam in a mass exodus occurring in 1954, and again from 1975-1992. In 1954, the Northern Vietnamese fled to Southern Vietnam to escape the corrupt and violent Viet Minh regime. Under the Viet Minh, anyone deemed an enemy was prosecuted under the full extent of the law: this included Catholics, intellectuals, landowners, and generally anyone that disobeyed the regime. In recent years, images of refugees fleeing from war torn regions have made a deep imprint on our collective consciousness, and debate surrounding sustainable immigration is one which has been ongoing for many years - not just since the European Refugee Crisis back in 2015. In fact this year marks the 40th anniversary of the arrival of 200 of the so-called Vietnamese ‘Boat People’ in Ireland, fleeing from the ravages of war in their home country. In a time when the Irish were more accustomed to emigration than immigration, this were a somewhat curious spectacle, but what happened to them? An introspective journey over the years from rediscovering Vietnam and himself, to studying Vietnamese artists, has enabled him to appreciate that ambiguity can give you the freedom to explore and create. And how that inspired his winning logo design for the Vietnamese Boat People which portrays the arduous journeys and the stories of the human spirit.

Canada accepts immigration of 50,000 Vietnamese “boat people.” Two years after the Vietnam war ended, the country’s communist government began stripping the rights of its ethnic Chinese citizens. Hundreds of thousands of them fled any way they could. Those who traveled by boat often landed on the shores of China and other Southeast Asian countries. International pressure mounted for Western countries to admit more of these “boat people,” prompting Canadians to apply pressure on their own leaders. On July 18, 1979, Prime Minister Joe Clark’s Progressive Conservative government announced that Canada would accept 50,000 of these refugees by the end of 1980. In the end, more than 60,000 were allowed to make Canada their new home. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In late 1978, huge numbers of refugees began fleeing Vietnam, trying to escape the country's repressive communist government. Many of the refugees took to sea in flimsy boats at huge risk. Diep Quan and her family were rescued from their sinking vessel by a British merchant ship and were among the first Vietnamese refugees to arrive in Britain. In January 1979, her family were given the keys to a new home in the English city of Peterborough. Diep tells Witness about her journey to Britain as a nine year old and the challenges of adapting to a new life in the UK. (Photo: Several boatloads of refugees reach Hong Kong waters in 1979.
