Colette Hamon grew up as a farm girl in an all-French-speaking town. Those days, her world revolved around wheat farming and the Catholic Church. Entrepreneurship, business growth, love, intimacy, gender roles, psychology – none of them were topics orbiting in her universe. After moving to the "big city" and earning her MBA, Hamon worked her way up the corporate ladder and saw success. But none of it fueled her fire. She founded BraTopia after recognizing a gap: the "big players" who dominated the lingerie industry were creating spaces that were not fit for the modern woman. They created discomfort, whereas Hamon wanted to promote self-acceptance and self-love. None of the brands served the woman she was or the woman she wanted her daughter to be. She has three children, two dogs, and no lack of interesting stories with regards to her life's adventures. Join Our Community of Canadian Entrepreneurs! Have you ever thought about how a simple device, something as modest as a “dumb phone,” could bring transformative change to billions? In today's episode, we're diving into this fascinating intersection of technology, accessibility, and social impact with Anu Bhardwaj, the visionary founder of SHEQONOMI. As the world's first and only women-led podcast platform aimed at the "bottom five billion," SHEQONOMI is making digital content and economic empowerment accessible to underserved women across the globe. From low-cost phones to inclusive content in over 50 languages, Anu's mission is to bridge the gender gap and bring education, health, and financial knowledge to women who traditionally lack access. SHEQONOMI isn't your typical podcast platform. It's specifically designed to work on low-cost mobile applications such as Jio, Cloud Phone, KaiOS, Android, and iOS. Imagine being able to connect and educate through over 5,000 women-centric podcasts in diverse languages—empowering voices that span topics from health to entrepreneurship, all while rewarding users for content creation and listening. Anu also brings a profound personal story of resilience and commitment. Inspired by her daughter's questions about educational inequalities, she built this platform from scratch, even securing a prestigious $150,000 grant from the Islamic Development Bank during the pandemic. Her achievements don't stop there: from co-chairing the Blockchain for Impact Summit at the United Nations to being named one of Inc Magazine's Global Top 100 Female Founders, Anu has made it her mission to use technology to uplift women and drive positive change. So, what's next for SHEQONOMI? Anu is setting her sights on developing a "super app" for marginalized populations, integrating generative AI, and expanding partnerships to bring more voices into the conversation. Could this pioneering platform redefine digital inclusion for billions around the world? And as Anu continues to break new ground, who would she love to have a conversation with from the worlds of tech, venture capital, or social impact? We're back and more energized than ever! It's been a whirlwind of experiences, from electrifying stages at Essence Fest to powerful moments at the DNC. This episode of "Across Generations" is all about reflection and celebration. I open up about the importance of having spaces dedicated to Black women, where we can discuss everything from the fluidity of our sexual identities to our challenges with online dating, and even our place in the world of sports. And yes, witnessing a Black woman stepping into a position of leadership for our nation is a milestone we must acknowledge, even as we confront the harsher realities of global conflicts. Kamala Harris's recent debate performance left me in awe, and I couldn't help but reflect on my personal experiences with her. Her ability to own a room is nothing short of inspiring, and it's moments like these that remind us of the critical need for voter mobilization and awareness. I also share my thoughts on media consumption, stressing the importance of diverse news sources, like The New York Times, Al Jazeera, and The Root, while sounding a cautionary note on the often misleading world of social media. Finding the balance between staying informed and not falling into the trap of disinformation is a tightrope we all walk. Lastly, let's talk about the power of connection among Black women. We dive into how social media can be both a tool for spreading truth and a weapon for misinformation, especially against marginalized communities. It's imperative that platforms hire more native Spanish speakers to better address targeted disinformation. I also reflect on the profound sense of community I've felt at our annual retreats—a sanctuary for open dialogue and mutual support. A recent heartfelt encounter on a flight underscored just how deep our unspoken connections run. Join us behind the scenes of "Across Generations," brought to life by the incredible team at Will Packer Media and iHeart Podcast, as we continue this journey of storytelling and connection. In Among Women across Worlds: North Korea in the Global Cold War (Cornell University Press, 2023), Suzy Kim follows Korean women's engagement in a broader international women's movement from the beginnings of the Korean War in the 1940s until International Women's Year in 1975. Obscured by layers of “cascading erasures,” the communist women of North Korea have been overlooked in traditional narratives of Asian and feminist history. By tracing their participation in global networks like the Women's International Democratic Federation, Kim excavates their ideas about work and family, war and peace, and imperialism and capitalism. Turning to women's magazines, traditional dance, socialist films, and the archives of international organizations, the book resurrects figures like Pak Chong-ae and the Korean Democratic Women's Union and the transnational circulation of their political, economic, and cultural contributions. Many of their ideas remain strikingly contemporary—from the equitable distribution of domestic labor to an intersectional understanding of justice—and presage debates that feminists continue to grapple with today. Female role models inside and outside the family are crucial, to develop a sense of nonchalance and self-evident attitude towards gender equality. Wise women of previous generations have insights and knowledge that is of great importance to pave the path for younger ones to dare to try and reach new territories, yet always remembering their save harbors. Having a strong woman in a previous generation, has impact on following generations of women within the family. A feeling of yes we can, if grandma could. This feeling is of great importance and one of the reasons for generations of strong women, within a single family. Seeing other women accomplishing things outside the box, is empowering and inspiring. It further takes away lots of self-doubts and some of the pressure to conform. Women across the world have passed on their wisdom to younger generations. This tradition is of immense value, not only for young women themselves, but their families, and their entire societies. Strong women have shaped societies and cultures around the world. The more we keep these women in mind and strive to conquer new territories, the more we can achieve for future generations and present female selves. The more we live up to our strong female heritage, the less exposed we feel and the better we can shelled off the winds, blowing from all directions. Internalising the nonchalance of our great grandmothers fighting for rights, completely unimaginable. It show us how we can change the world to a more gender equal place. The rights and benefits our great grandmothers achieve, so often is neglected. We take many things for granted. It's important to keep fighting for freedom, not all women around the world have the responsibility rights they deserve to have. @unesurcent @drschwank @optimalperformancezurich
Sonali Patel Wilson is Managing Director and Director of Alternatives, Americas at Wellington Management where she is based in the New York City area. She sits on the investment committee of the Harry and Jeanette Foundation in Baltimore and she is the trustee of EWAAB Encouraging Women across All Borders, which helps college aged women and non-binary individuals build their confidence to enter STEM and finance fields. She previously held various positions at PIMCO focused on account management in the alternatives area and has held various investor relations and analyst roles. Our conversation traces Sonali's roots and the path her parents took as immigrants from India as well as the entrepreneurship and sacrifice that served as the backdrop to her childhood. The entrepreneurship journey took them from lobby convenience store stands to real estate and the focus was on studying and academic achievement and, always, hard work. We move then to her journey into investment and finance and how she found her voice and style in developing a network and some of the surprising turns that that journey took. This discussion infuses Sonali's personal and professional lives, in which she followed a tradition of "breaking with tradition" in her own choice of life partner, and this has given her a new appreciation for diversity and inclusion. Sonali has numerous interests that are close to her heart and many of them relate to STEM and finance and getting those areas more diverse. In particular her work with EWAAB (Encouraging Women across All Borders) is impactful in this respect and we discuss what drives her to do more in this area. Susan Freese (founder and president of All In Ministries International) talked to us about healthy short term missions. You can more wisely steward your short-term missions to make a long-term impact with one addition: discipling indigenous women. Worldwide women believers do not know they are loved, valued, or have a divine purpose of enjoying God and exalting Him by making disciples. When you intentionally invest in local women—they are radically and fundamentally changed. They'll risk their lives to spread the gospel to their families, communities, and closed spaces. That's because women are "keepers of religion" in many cultures—yet few people invest in women.

“We want to see farms like yours be very successful and profitable because your profit directly relates to our ability to create a more sustainable, healthy planet and continue to access and grow food.” Lori Taylor (16:12-16:37) Beth Bocock went from saying, “I'll never marry a farmer!” to becoming one of the second owners of Bumbleberry Acres with her husband, working for Naturipe and being the head of Bumbleberry's agritourism. The farm, originally 600 acres and now 44, had been around since 1857 and caught Beth and her husband's eye when they were driving and saw a “for sale'' sign. Immediately after buying, they asked their kids, “what would you want to do if you came here to work? If this was a vacation destination, what would you want to see?” This helped inspire the Bococks' to add a petting zoo of miniature animals to the farm, opening the door for Bumbleberry to become a wonderful, family-friendly destination. When visitors arrive at Bumbleberry, they're taken care of by the “Bumbleberry Girls” who are specifically trained to interact with customers and treat them like family. The girls know every inch of the farm, from the dirt, to the berries and how they are grown. Beth's focus with the girls (they hire three every year) is to empower them to learn where things on the farm come from, so visitors too can always be learning every step of the way through their experience. “It was important for us that families do not feel like they're going to a farm and getting nickel-and-dimed to death.” Beth Bocock (7:41-7:48) What's it like spending a day at Bumbleberry Acres? Visitors can enjoy activities like the U-pick for blueberries, a corn maze and wagon ride around fall, delicious food with ingredients straight from the farm, and plenty of blueberry pies during their Blueberry Festival in August. Beth really wants visitors to understand where food really comes from, how we're helping take care of the planet, and the responsibility and respect to her kids that comes with providing these products to consumers. Did you know more than half of the world's profits from produce items are not getting back to growers? Farmers are dealing with profit crunches the same way we're dealing with a sudden rise in all of our expenses, and to not have the amount of profit they deserve hitting their pockets could damage our entire agricultural supply chain. Beth also works with Naturipe Farms, who you know from past episodes is a great place full of empowered women! Beth says there are many more women involved at the company and farming in general than there were 20 years ago. She used to go to meetings with her husband and there'd only be a few other women in there, and women speakers were unheard of. But today you'll even see women running a farm after their husband has passed away, completely uninhibited and capable of performing any of the tasks on a farm. “We pay particular attention to the girls because we want to give them a stepping stone to be empowered women. We look at girls not like they're unemployable by someone else, but that they're not going to get the same education we're going to teach them to be strong women.” Beth Bocock (27:03-27:13) Beth wants Bumbleberry to empower women just as well as Naturipe has. Every girl they interview to work on the farm is looked at for their potential for future leadership, not just their personality and resume. Beth takes note of how they interact with people, how compassionate they are, and it's paid off. Of the 36 girls they've hired, each have gone into a position of leadership in or outside of farming. Whether it's empowering consumers to understand where their food comes from and how to support farmers, empowering women to accomplish anything they want in agriculture (from the field to CFO), or empowering farmers to make the profits they deserve, Beth Bocock, Blueberry Acres and Naturipe Farms all are doing incredible things to create empowered opportunities for all. This weeks podcast is glorious leadership stories from 3 glorious women who are members of the expedition. You will want to listen to this episode twice, I have no doubt. Because there are so many AH Hah's about leadership. DR Rhouba Mhaissen on “they started calling me a leader so I realised I would have to behave like one”, Erica Su on “have the courage to self define your story and not worry about people thinking you are self limiting. It's your story no one else's “ and Folawe Omikunle talking about her head teacher who showed her what “leading with love” meant so that she has done it ever since.
The US Supreme Court judge is poised to overturn Roe vs. Wade. In Canada, the landmark abortion rights case is the 1988 Morgentaler ruling, which struck down the country's abortion law as unconstitutional. But legal protection is not the same as equal access and in many parts of the country, surgical abortion is still practically unavailable. I speak with Meghan Doherty of Action Canada for Sexual Health and Rights.
"You are overly sensitive, don't be so dramatic," or "you feel so much" are some things women have heard quite often for the last couple of centuries. Those statements, plus the ingrained oppressive culture we've been raised in, conspire to boost our self-doubt and diminish our opinion of ourselves. Our guest, Jill Douka, believes that how we perceive ourselves is the leading cause why women are afraid of tapping into our best version and being open to the possibility of living our best lives. Jill has trained, coached, and mentored thousands of people in Europe, the USA, and Asia. She is the International Bestselling Author of Create Love, bestselling author of How to Create Your Life and Suddenly Now, a Business Mentor Awarded by the European Union, and the Director of the Global Academy of Coaching. Jill holds an MBA in Business Administration and is an MCC (Master Certified Coach) accredited by the International Coaching Federation. We had a fantastic conversation about the power most women have and are, in a certain way, afraid to acknowledge, why most of us keep on sabotaging ourselves, and the much-needed paradigm change only feminine energy can produce in the world. Jill kindly shared her latest book's main topics; we discussed the power of joy, the importance of ignoring what others think of us, and how teaching the right values to our kids can enormously impact society. In This Episode, You Will Learn:About "Create Love: 7 secrets to manifest your perfect match," Jill's latest book (2:19)The one thing that holds women back (6:24)Joy is a life-giving gift (10:36)About the stereotypes that bombard women's heads daily (13:24)Life is made out of choices (14:54)Choose yourself first. If there is one thing I'm passionate about, it's ensuring that women feel protected at all times. Last season, I spoke to two young ladies from South Africa who discussed their fears of living in the rape capital of the world. On this episode, I chop it up with Halima Gellman, a humanitarian and human rights activists that is doing the actual work to bring safety to women across the globe. From educating big wigs in corporate America on the details of basic human rights and rape culture, to developing policies that keep us all safe, we're grateful for the work that Halima does.
