It's Monday! Let's raise a glass to the beginning of another week! It's time to unscrew, uncork, or saber a bottle and let's begin exploring the wine glass! Today on the podcast we return to Winephabet Street where the letter of the day is V and it stands for Villány. I was so excited to be able to see some familiar faces, even if it was only through the computer. Talking with András Horkay, Andrea Gere and Erhard Heumann brought back wonderful memories of my trip to Villány a couple of years ago for the Franc & Franc Conference. Everyone knows how much of a Cab Franc fiend I am, so when it came to reaching out for a sponsor for the letter “V” I knew where to go, and was beyond thrilled they agreed to share their stories with us. An extra special thank you to Attila Tancsó for arranging everything! I know you are going to enjoy this episode as much as I did. The wines are distributed in the United States, so be sure to find them and add them to your collection. I promise you won't be disappointed! These wines are imported by Wines of Hungary in Washington DC. Music: WINE by Kēvens Official Video Follow me on Instagram! Follow me on Twitter! It's Monday! Let's raise a glass to another week! It's time to unscrew, uncork, or saber a bottle and let's begin exploring the wine glass! Today on the podcast I am sharing a recording from a virtual tasting that I attended hosted by the New York Wine and Grape Foundation. When we hear Finger Lakes wine, I think the majority of us immediately think of Riesling. And although the Finger Lakes makes quality Riesling, there is another white grape that does exceptionally well there. Chardonnay. In fact, it is the second most widely planted variety in the region. The tasting was moderated by Dan Belmont, American Wine Expert and holds a WSET L3 certification. I was sent three sample Chardonnay's from Ben Riccardi, Winemaker Osmote Wine Co. Jeremy Broshiers Damiani Wine Cellars Alex Rosanelli, Winemaker Hounds Tree Wines Alongside the Chardonnay, I received cheddar cheese from Cabot cheese. A compliment of different cheddar cheeses that will pair perfectly with the three Chardonnays. Thank you to the New York Wine and Grape Foundation and Cabot Cheese for sponsoring this class and to the wineries, Osmote Wine Co, Damiani Wine Cellars and Hounds Tree Wines for allowing me to participate. Listen in as we hear about cool climate Chardonnay and how much the Finger Lakes has to offer. Music: WINE by Kēvens Official Video Follow me on Instagram! Follow me on Twitter! It's Monday, Let's raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It's time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let's begin Exploring the Wine Glass! It has been a whirl wind three weeks and I have not had time to record a new episode. But don't worry, today's Best of is seriously an incredible episode! I had the pleasure and luck to sit down with John Wagner of Wagner Vineyards in the Finger Lakes. His family has been involved in the Finger Lakes wine industry for generations. Not only does he know the history of the region, but he knows how to make exceptional wines. Wagner Vineyards was named 2019 New York Wine Classic Winery of the Year, after 4 of his Rieslings received Double Gold! I hope you enjoy this Best of Episode and I'll be back with a new episode next week. Slainte! Music: WINE by Kēvens Official Video Follow me on Instagram! Follow me on Twitter! It's Monday, Let's raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It's time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let's begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today I sat down with John Merrick of Mea Wines and enjoyed a glass of his award winning Vermentino. A fellow Paso Robles winemaker, I enjoyed the first in person Allure of the Pour in almost two years! Mea Wines' tasting room is located in Atascadero, just a short drive from downtown Paso. Have you rated and reviewed Exploring the Wine Glass yet? I know it seems weird, I have no clue why.. But each review makes such a difference in the eye of the all knowing algorithm of iTunes. It's Monday, Let's raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It's time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let's begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today I sit down with some wine writer friends and we discuss whether hyper specific wine glasses are a necessity or a luxury. Last month I read an article in Wine Enthusiast written by Kelly A. Magyarics titled "Is Hyperspecific Wine Stemware Worth It?" As I was reading it, I looked at the glasses in my china cabinet, where I have loads of wine glasses, that remain in the cabinet more than on my table, I thought this is a great topic for a Wine Writers' Wrap Up. It's Monday, Let's raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It's time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let's begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today I am talking Shrubs with William Caines, owner and head shrub maker at Wicked Bess. Will reached out to me on Instagram and asked if I would be interested in sampling his shrubs. After telling him I was completely clueless about shrubs but was interested, he graciously sent me three samples. I proceeded to make an IG video of me mixing a drink; of which I completely messed up the proportions. But damn, that drink was good! Will shared my video and mentioned I used too much shrub, I laughed and then decided the only way I'd learn about shrubs was to have him on the podcast and share his knowledge. It's Monday, Let's raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It's time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let's begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today I am sharing a glass with Ara Sarkissian from Storica Wines. Storica Wines is located in Armenia and I was so excited to learn about long wine history (about 6,000 years of history) of Armenian wine and how the geopolitical conflict and politics affected the history of winemaking in the country. And fo course we did a little tasting! We talk about the oldest wine producing facility that has been found. The Areni cave complex dates back to around 4000 BC as well as some of the indigenous grapes that are cultivated. Including the most common red grape Areni and the white grape Voskehat. It's Monday, Let's raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It's time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let's begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today I sit down with Julio Saenz, head winemaker for La Rioja Alta. His original career was as a pharmaceutical chemist. But once he fell in love with wine, it returned to school to obtain his degree in viticulture and oenology. La Rioja Alta was his first winemaking job and he has never regretted it nor did he ever look back. We discuss La Rioja as a region, what makes it so special and the stories behind four wines in the La Rioja Alta portfolio; Gran Reservas 890 and 904 as well as the Viña Arana, the Gran Reserva 2014. Today I sit down with Bastien Leduc, the winemaker for Seven Oxen Winery in Paso Robles. They say you never know when an opportunity will come knocking, and today's podcast is a prime example of that. When a friend of the Neal family's daughter was getting married to Bastien, the topic of wine obviously came up. Bastien's passion was infectious and the Neal family caught it. When the Neals purchased property on the West Side of Paso, they welcomed Bastien to the Seven Oxen Estate Wines family as Vineyard Manager and Winemaker. It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today I sit down with Talley and Mike Henry, owners of Acre and One Acre Wines in Napa Valley. Acre Wines formerly known as One Acre Wines was originally owned by David Becker. The property originally was planted with fruit trees. When the trees started showing issues, he decided to plant over to vines with 2000 surplus Cabernet Sauvignon vines from a nearby winery. The property was a single acre in the Oak Knoll district just north of the town of Napa. In early 2017 David sold Acre Wines and One Acre to Mike and Talley Henry, fulfilling their lifelong dream. They hired winemaker Richard Bruno and together they pride themselves in producing wine that expresses the unique characteristics that define Napa Valley Their tasting room is located in the Studio by Feast it Forward located directly across from the Oxbow Public Market in downtown Napa. Today I am sitting down with Marcus Rafanelli, winemaker for L’Ecole 41 Winery in Walla Walla , Washington and we are discussing Chenin Blanc. I have a special place in my wine heart for Chenin Blanc. It is such a chameleon of a variety. One that can be made into whatever style the winemaker wants. From bone dry to sweet, there is a Chenin for you. The 2020 L’Ecole Chenin Blanc is a blend from three vineyards and is honestly one of the most aromatic wines I have ever had. At $17 per bottle, this wine is way worthy of a case purchase. Plus they are offering penny shipping right now it is definitely a weeknight/everyday essential to have in your cellar. Adam Montiel has lived on the Central Coast for almost 20 years and has been as big of a supporter of the local scene as anyone can be. We sit down and discuss all things Paso Robles, including our favorite places to visit and his own podcast, Where Wine Takes You. There is a little name dropping and a lot of laughing. I want to give a big shout out to Josh.harp.does.wine for leaving this 5 star review. I had the privilege of being a guest on the podcast. Lori does an amazing job of revealing the side of winemaking that customers don’t always get to see and winemakers love to talk about. She is a natural interviewer, and her podcasts have great energy and are very educational. Thank you, Josh. your kind words mean so much to me. It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! For the love of Cabernet Franc! That is what is on the podcast today. There are so many Cab Franc lovers out there and we are united in the fact that we want to prove that it is more than a blending grape. Cristian Vallejo is the winemaker for VIK Winery in Chile and thanks to social media we “met.” After a few back and forths on INstagram, we arranged a time to sit down and talk about VIK wines, Cabernet Franc around the world and how he farms the vines in a new to me way! It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! With every vintage a winery has so many decisions to make. Many are about the vineyards and the fruit, but others are purely judgments about marketing. What will make the customers pick up their bottle of wine over another bottle that is right next to it. Today on the podcast, I sit down with some wine lovers and we discuss whether we agree or disagree with the decisions that were made. Joining me in the conversation is Michael Kelly of California Wines and Wineries, Susannah Gold of Vigneto Communications and Luciana Braz of Wine Talk Group. I want to give a big shout out to Feelingvine for leaving this 5 star review. Loving this Podcast - I’ve been enjoying this podcast and loving the guests she has on. I have also found some new wines to try and look for. I would definitely recommend it! I love your name Feelingvine and thank you for listening and for leaving this fantastic review. This truly is the best way to show support of the podcast and to help let other winelovers find Exploring the Wine Glass. RIDDLE: Who or what are we: Every boxer needs a good one. It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today we return to Winephabet Street to learn about the letter P, Petite Sirah! Often confused by new winelovers as just a smaller version of Syrah or Shiraz, it is in fact a completely different variety. Petite Sirah, also known as Durif, is a man-made variety that resulted from a cross between Syrah and Peloursin. The objective of the cross was to make a grape variety that is resistant to powdery mildew. It was first brought to California in 1884 by Charles McIver and had a similar history to Zinfandel during Prohibition thanks to its ability to travel cross country well. I had the privilege of sitting down with Steve Tenbrink of Tenbrink Cellars and his daughter Lisa Howard of Tolenas Winery in Suisun Valley, California. Petite Sirah Capital of the World. For example: In New Jersey, if you are arrested for drunk driving, you have to pay the fine, BUT you are no longer eligible for vanity plates! Oh the horror! It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today I am sharing with you a Zoom event I attended about Bordeaux Terroir. Terroir is defined as the complete natural environment in which a particular wine is produced, including factors such as the soil, topography, and climate. It also relates to the characteristic taste and flavor imparted to a wine by the environment in which it is produced. Bordeaux is a very regulated wine region and I am a believer that you can taste their soils in the glass. Whether you are in the Left or the Right Bank, within the AOCs there are differences that present themselves in the glass. Join me as I learn more about the soils of Bordeaux in this seminar presented by Benchmark Wine. The first quote seems to be that of "Documents on the History of Piedmont," where it appears that in 1268 this grape varietal was cultivated in Rivoli, in the hills of Turin. It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! There is a quote by Linda Wooten states that motherhood is learning about strengths you didn’t know you had.. and dealing with fears you didn’t know existed. Well, that statement is definitely true when it come to Delia of Viader Vineyards! She calls herself the ‘Wine Mother.’ As she claims I'm the mother of the vines; and the mother of the wines; and the mother of the wine maker.” That is a lot of mothering! I had the pleasure of sitting down with Delia to discuss what it is like to be woman in the wine world. What it was like to see a piece of property on Howell Mountain and, without any true wine background, know that she could make a name for herself as a vineyard owner and a winemaker. We talked about why making wines from “Above the Clouds” equates to a very specific profile that no matter the winemaker, the wine always speaks to being Howell Mountain. And we discuss what it was like to be in the middle of the horrific fires and see flames all around you. While you are listening, If you like what you hear, please give us a 5 star review, and tell us what you love about the podcast. Each review helps others find us! We truly do appreciate your support. It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Before we get into today’s podcast, I would like to thank everyone who took to social media this past Friday to celebrate Cab Franc Day. As the founder of the holiday, it warms my soul to see so many winelovers who believe, as I do, that Cabernet Franc is more than a blending grape. In today’s podcast, I am taking you to a small European country that has a history rich in winemaking. A country that is described by Master of Wine Caroline Gilby as lying to the east of Romania with Ukraine on its eastern border. It’s a small country, with a population currently estimated at around 3.5 million (for comparison Romania is just over 19 million and Ukraine over 43 million). There are direct flights to Moldova’s capital Chisinau from major European cities like London, Frankfurt, Vienna and Bucharest, so not hard to get to. Then it’s a short taxi ride into the city itself. The podcast is a recording from a live event recorded in early November to discuss Moldovia’s National Wine Day. With Cab Franc Day nearly upon us, I thought I would continue with another Best of Podcast. The original episode which dropped in April of 2018 has over 600 downloads. I think it is a fan favorite. It was called "In the Wind of Pleasure." Today, I am going to read you a story. A story like no other wine story you have ever heard before. It is a story of romance, ok, maybe not romance, more like lust and seduction. The story of an innocent girl, Sauvignon Blanc who falls for troubled man, Cabernet Franc, and endures his wildness and anti-social behavior. But ultimately they come together to create one of the most well known children in the world (Cabernet Sauvignon) I hope you enjoy this tale, and maybe you should listen to this one using earbuds! There is a saying that to be a jack of all trades is to be a master of none. Well, my guest today is living proof that that is NOT the case. Doug Frost is a Master of Wine and Master Sommelier as well as an author and wine consultant based in Kansas City, Missouri. As if being a Master of Wine and a Master Sommelier is not enough, Doug has written three wine books, hosted an Emmy award short series titled “FermentNation, and is the co-creator of a spirits and cocktail education organization. Now you would think that would be more than enough for us to talk about on Allure of the Pour, but that wasn’t even the main focus. Doug is now a partner in Echolands Winery in Walla Walla and just completed planting one vineyard and is in the process of designing a second planting. So join me as I talk to Doug about all the dirty details of planning and planting a vineyard. Follow me on Instagram! Follow me on Twitter! Thanks for listening in. Today I have a very special guest, Enrique Tirado, winemaker for Don Melchor. Now although I would have much rather had this interview on site in Chile, we had to rely on technology to get us through this one. Enrique has been with Concho y Toro since 1993, but moved his focus to the Don Melchor brand in 1995, taking complete reign of this now, most award-winning wine on the global scale, that is a single wine, Don Melchor Cabernet Sauvignon. We sat down and discussed what it is like to be in charge of a winery that has celebrated it’s 30th Anniversary with it’s 2017 vintage and I have to honor of virtually clinking with Enrique while sipping his incredible wine. Thank you to Amanda at Gregory & Vine for arranging the interview. Music: Wine by Kēvens Official Video Follow me on Instagram! Follow me on Twitter! Today, I sit down with Pam Riley of Food and Wine Chronicles and discuss the inequities in the wine world. Black Lives Matter is a strong movement and an important one. It is sad to know that people are treated differently just because of the color of their skin. If you listen to this podcast or read my blog, you know how I am a scientist at heart (and by training) . Bill Nye the Science Guy is a hero of mine. If he explained the science behind skin color in less than 2 minutes on Tik Tock, it’s really not very difficult to comprehend. The color of the skin may be different, but we are all a single species. Remember the adage, don’t judge a book by its cover? That is all you are doing if you treat another human differently because of an external feature. Let’s get over it and let’s raise a glass to a day that a wine lover is a wine lover no matter the color of their skin.Opening Music by Kēvens Official VideoPublisher - KTF PUBLISHING (BMI)Distributor -AWAL Label - KTF Music Follow me on Instagram!
