Susan has written for and appeared on many radio shows including Jeremy Hardy Talks to the Nation and Stephen K. Amos´ Life: An Idiot´s Guide and is one of the Huffington Post´s funniest women tweeters and stalwart of the British comedy circuit and the Edinburgh Fringe and has performed across the world. Susan and Danny discuss the UK comedy revolution that happened in the 80s/90s, including The Comic Strip and The Young Ones. Susan shares some great stories and trivia about some of the UK`s biggest comedians. KEY TAKEAWAYS Susan Murray runs the Red Imp comedy club in Walthamstow. Working on Spitting Image and one of the UK´s first adult animation shows was her path into comedy. Susan is the person behind the current comedian’s Christmas party. Held in January because everyone is working at Xmas. 95% of comics get their gigs from the Facebook page Susan started. It's still quite hard being a woman in comedy, but things are improving. Some rooms are terrible for comedy. Gigs in low ceiling rooms are easier, but ones with mirrors or round tables are hell. You can´t second guess a room, some of the gigs Susan thought would be dreadful e.g. A room full of stag parties were great. When Susan makes bread it always looks like John Merrick´s head. Comedians who do the Edinburgh Fringe end up losing money. BEST MOMENTS “I'm Scottish, manufactured, Black Country raised.” “Then The Young Ones burst on the screen, and it literally blew my mind.” “Barry Cryer was an anecdote machine.” “Gigs are a bit nicer than they used to be.” “Why would you heckle a deaf comic?” “I had people ringing me up going, can you never stop baking your s**t bread.” “You get to be really rude to people in the audience, they love it, and then you get paid for it…. What more could you want from life?” “Comedy is a delicate flower you can´t shove it anywhere and expect it to thrive.” EPISODE RESOURCES http://susan-murray.co.uk/up-coming-gigs http://www.redimpcomedy.com Find a gig FB page - https://www.facebook.com/groups/284118201700872 HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. The David Lynch Deep Dive continues with his second feature film, an historical biopic centered around John Merrick, a young man in 19th Century England with striking birth and genetic defects that made him treated as a freakshow, whether in the circus or in a hospital. It's a surprisingly conventional, normal, straightforward film. Very much not what we associate with David Lynch. So . . . how effective IS it? We discuss.

I'm joined by author David Annandale for a deep dive into the poverty Row horror film THE MONSTER MAKER (1944). Even among fans of these low budget efforts this one has a disreputable reputation as an example of the lines that these movies sometimes crossed. It is often singled out as one of the darker and more sadistic horrors of the 1940's it does its best to creep out the viewer with the first onscreen appearance of a victim of acromegaly, the real disease that afflicted The Elephant Man, John Merrick. The film's jumbled script throws in elements borrowed from MAD LOVE (1935), THE RAVEN (1935) and a few other classic horror movies as well. And since this is a mad scientist story, we must have a man in a gorilla suit or the authorities might have stopped production entirely!   Mr. Annandale and I discuss the film's cast at length with my guest's appreciation of Wanda McKay being most interesting. We make a defense of J. Carrol Naish's slightly underplayed central performance as the villain of the piece although why we would need to defend an actor with two Oscars to his credit is beyond me. We praise the excellent makeup effects used to transform Ralph Morgan into a misshapen, monstrous looking victim. And we dig into the section of this very short film that seems unnecessary and possibly was included to pad out the running time. Not that either of us dislike seeing a man in a gorilla suit but to have Ace, the Wonder Dog's action sequence absent from the movie seems a shame! Mr. Annandale was a good sport to be part of the show and I'm glad to showcase his love of this film.   The email address for the show is thebloodypit@gmail.com so send any comments or ideas to us there. If you have any favorite Poverty Row Horror that you'd like to hear discussed let us know as we are keen to return to the subject. Thank you for listening!

Find out as we have a discussion with the cast and production team about Artform's theatre productions.www.Artform.org.uk the Broadway Studios Theatre in SE London.Artform.org.ukSynopsisIn 19th Century Victorian England, Dr. Frederick Treves wanders through an urban carnival in search of freak shows. He happens on a hideously deformed creature called The Elephant Man, and pays the owner Mr. Bytes to examine it. Treves purpose is to present a paper to the Pathological Society and enhance his medical reputation. The Elephant Man returns from the seminar to Bytes and is beaten severely for wondering off. The man's injuries, as well as an attack from bronchitis, leads Treves to admit him to the hospital. In an attempt to convince the authorities to allow the man to stay, Treves endeavors to communicate with the person. During a meeting, Treves discovers that the man can talk and is educated. The Elephant Man's name is John Merrick and he reveals that he has had this strange disease since he was 14 which benign tumors grow all over his body, face and hands, in which he must sleep sitting up or he will die from suffocation. Merrick is given a room to live in and gradually becomes accepted by most members of the hospital staff. But one hospital night porter sees a money spinner and each evening gathers a drunken crowd of people who will pay any price to see the freak.Treves attempts to introduce Merrick to London society and brings him over to meet with his wife, who hides her shock at Merricks appearance. Soon the local newspapers run articles on Merrick. One is read by actress Mrs. Kendal who visits Merrick, tells him about her life in the theatre and gives him a copy of Shakespeares plays. However the night porter is still in business in displaying Merrick. One evening, Bytes joins the throng and after a particularly humiliating brawl, kidnaps Merrick and takes him to France. Severely neglected and very ill, Merrick is once more put on display as the Elephant Man for the local crowds. Bytes' son tells his father that he can take no more of seeing him humiliate a human being, but Bytes tells his son to mind his own business. That night, Bytes' son, with the help of other carnival freaks, releases Merrick and assists his escape back to England.Reunited with Treves, it appears that Merrick does not have long to live. Merrick visits the theater with Treves and his wife where Mrs. Kendal has her performance dedicated to him. Back at the hospital, Merrick thanks Treves for a splendid evening and afterwards discards all pillows from his bed, determined to lie down like everyone else. Mike and Dan react to recent stories about Jared Leto transforming himself physically for his role in House of Gucci.  When will this praise of prosthetics-for-prosthetics' sake end?  When will the gimmick be praised less than the performance?   (Note: Dan refers to the actor who played John Merrick in David Lynch's The Elephant Man as William Hurt.  The actor was, of course, John Hurt.  Dan knew it as soon as it came out of his mouth but he was on a roll.)  Jump out of that makeup chair and give it a listen! The pioneers and leaders of Black Durham during the early 20th century are often lauded for steering their community through the challenges of living in the Jim Crow South while creating some of the most successful African American-lead businesses, educational and financial institutions of the era. The legacy of Durham's Black Wall Street along with the historic and prosperous Hayti community remain among the more celebrated of their accomplishments. Often absent from dialogue surrounding this history are the complicated choices that Black Durham's leaders had to make in order to facilitate the development of their community, and how those choices impacted their own constituents as well as the race as a whole. Black Durham's citizens sometimes had competing viewpoints and disagreed on what direction the ship should be steered in order to support African American advancement. Additionally, while stories of Black Durham's leadership are often drawn from scholarly sources, listeners will hear from the direct descendants of two of Durham's most influential pioneers: John Merrick and Dr. Aaron Moore. Not only were the men business partners and friends, eventually they also became family. Greensboro, NC City Attorney Charles D. Watts Jr., Esq. and his sister, Eileen Watts Welch, who serves as the President of the Durham Colored Library, Inc., offer personal perspectives on their family history and legacy. Joseph Carey Merrick, often incorrectly called John Merrick, was born on 5th August 1862 in Leicester, England. Merrick was born healthy, and had no symptoms of any disorder. However, by the age of 2 he had developed a bony lump on his forehead, swellings on his face and his skin began getting rough and coarse. So much so that in 1884, aged 22, he contacted comedian Sam Torr and persuaded him to exhibit him as a living curiosity. The pair travelled to London and met sideshow proprietor Tom Norman who hired Merrick on the spot. It was while working for Norman under the moniker The Elephant Man that Merrick met Dr. Frederick Treves, an expert in anatomy, and renowned surgeon at London Hospital. Through his connections Dr. Treves managed to get Merrick his very own apartment on the grounds on the hospital where he was allowed t stay for the remainder of his life. Joseph Merrick died on 11th April 1890, aged 27. He was found laying on his back with a dislocated neck. It's believed that Merrick had been attempting to sleep lying down to "be like other people.” ✅ Let's connect: Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/unusualweekly Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/unusualweekly Twitter - https://www.twitter.com/unusualweekly YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/unusualasusual Fact Analysis: Although careful research is implemented to assure accurate and correct information, sometimes it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction (or ‘humbug', as P.T. Picking his brain from how it felt to be back in a drama after a long run of comedy (and a musical!), digging into the physical, emotion and mental demands of playing the role and what he hoped everyone took away from the production.Check out all things Nicholas Kory: www.nicholaskory.comVisit our website: www.icantihaverehearsalpodcast.comSubscribe on iTunes: https://apple.co/2GsGe9QPlease make sure to rate us and leave a review! John Hurt as Artist is a new exhibition in Norfolk which reveals a less well-known side of the actor who died last year. Sir John Hurt's widow Anwen discusses the mainly figurative paintings and drawings which mostly relate to the actor's off-screen life, but also include self-portraits of him in prosthetic make-up for his role as John Merrick in The Elephant Man from 1980. Ian McKellen is playing King Lear in the West End and recently Anthony Hopkins played him on television. Accompanying Lear on his bleak and tragic journey is his Fool. Karl Johnson, Fool to Anthony Hopkins' Lear, and Lloyd Hutchinson, McKellen's Fool, discuss the way they approach this enigmatic figure.Recently we've been offering inspiration on holiday reading to help you choose which books to cram into your suitcase. “Wrapped in Podcast” is back with Episode 25, Part Two, in which J.R. Parker, T. Kyle King, and Ken Walczak continue their explication of David Lynch’s “The Elephant Man”. Be forewarned, though, that this installment features neither Ice-T’s “Colors” nor Jeff Fallis’s moderating professorial influence. In spite of those notable absences, J.R. questions John Merrick’s choice of theatrical productions, confuses corrupt Congressmen Dan Rostenkowski and James Traficant with one another, and welcomes listeners back to America’s favorite legal podcast, while Kyle criticizes a series of scenes that are a little too on the nose, spots both Plato’s shadows on the cave wall and Audrey Horne’s clandestine surveillance of her father’s secret meetings, and sparks a doctoral dissertation on flames versus electricity in Lynch’s oeuvre. For his part, Ken disagrees with Roger Ebert, takes a swing on the gym set from “Twin Peaks: The Return”, and declares that it’s his party and he’ll cry if he wants to. Yes, it’s true that this tight 36-minute summation of “The Elephant Man” contains lawyerly allusions to bailments, interpleader, replevin, strict liability, trover, and usufructuary rights. However, like the mentions of “Batman Begins” and “Star Trek”, they appear only in passing. “Wrapped in Podcast” remains primarily a forum for discussing David Lynch, so this detailed examination of “The Elephant Man” is worth your while, if only for the revelation that Lynch makes a cameo in the film. Ken’s Beverage Corner is about property law, though, so there’s that.

Contrary to what the hosts seem to think, Episode 25 of “Wrapped in Podcast” is not actually about “The Greatest Showman”. Instead, J.R. Parker, T. Kyle King, and Ken Walczak discuss David Lynch’s first film as a professional director, “The Elephant Man”. They also speak a fair degree of legalese. Based on the life of Joseph (often mistakenly called “John”) Merrick, “The Elephant Man” was nominated for eight Academy Awards and led directly to the creation of a new Oscar category. In Part One of their review of the triumphant 1980 masterpiece Mel Brooks chose Lynch to make, the “Wrapped in Podcast” gang (minus the salutary non-lawyer influence of regular panelist Jeff Fallis) expresses amazement that the movie was even made. J.R. praises Lynch’s decision to film “The Elephant Man” in stock black and white, identifies Bytes as a precursor to BOB, and attempts (then abandons) a John Hurt impersonation. Kyle believes the word “understanding” invariably implies misunderstanding, spots the juxtaposition of natural free animal man and expendable mechanized human cogs, and thinks “The Elephant Man” in many ways seems like a movie from much later in Lynch’s career. Ken contributes biographical background on Merrick, links the film to “Freaks”, and hears what he calls “Industrial Cacophony No. 1”. In a 66-minute discussion eschewing their usual scene-by-scene treatment, the podcasters make mention of Jeffrey Beaumont, Dale Cooper, Harry Crews, Boyd Crowder, “Dune”, golf carts, the Industrial Revolution, Jack the Ripper, Hannibal Lecter, “The Lion in Winter”, maternal impression, the Minions, moral line-drawing, Jack Nance, open flames, Laura Palmer, Karl Pilkington, the Puritans, R2-D2, “Time Bandits”, Universal Studios, Victorian hospital security, voyeurism, the War Doctor, Western capitalism, worker’s compensation, and zoning. It’s that time of year again for the usual “Best of…” lists where critics review their picks for the best (and sometimes worst) in music, movies, fashion, and the like and give people at holiday parties something to argue about. For the past three years my approach has been a little different as I prefer to offer a few “Special End of Year Awards” to Sonoma County theatres and artists. Here is Part I of my 2017 awards: The “Now You See It, Now You Don’t” Award - The Santa Rosa Junior College production of It Can’t Happen Here opened on October 6 and closed on October 8. The adaptation of the 1935 Sinclair Lewis novel about the rise of a populist blow-hard to the Presidency had a lot to say about our current political climate, but not a lot of people had a chance to see it. Its run was cut short with the closure of the SRJC campus as a result of the fires. The “Show Must Go On” Award – There were many theatre companies that understandably postponed their runs during the North Bay fires. Cinnabar Arts and Spreckels Theatre Company went on with their scheduled openings of Quartet and Monty Python’s Spamalot. While neither facility was in immediate danger, I was conflicted about the decision. I attended both productions, enjoyed them both, and was glad they decided to open. That being said, I’m still not sure they should have. The “Yes, There IS Diversity in Sonoma County, Dammit” Award – The Santa Rosa Junior College production of Lin Manuel-Miranda’s In the Heights proved the claim that there isn’t a diverse enough talent pool from which to cast many shows is suspect. Perhaps choosing shows in a season that speak and appeal to more diverse artists and audiences would widen the pool. Maybe it’s also time to check some artistic egos at the door and go and find them. The “Big Things Come in Small Packages” Award – The studio theatres of Sonoma County’s largest companies often offered superior work to that displayed on their main stages - 6th Street’s Visiting Mr. Green and A Masterpiece of Comic… Timing and Spreckels’ The Sugar Bean Sisters and Little Women, the Musical for example. The “Out of Left Field” Award – Not many people are willing to venture out to Monte Rio to catch theatre. You should give it a shot. You’re not going to get the bells and whistles other production companies may provide, but Curtain Call can do a lot with a little. They put on an excellent production of The Elephant Man with local comedian James Rowan giving an incredibly touching performance as John Merrick. Live theatre continues to struggle in Sonoma County (as it does most any place else.) Like many residents, the theatre community did not escape the fires unscathed with some companies losing their performance space and others losing equipment, props and costumes. Numerous theatre artists lost their homes. Live theatre will go on because Sonoma County supports it but, as with every other part of our community, change is inevitable. Tune in next week for Part II of my awards. Here’s to an artistically invigorating 2018. I’ll see you at the theatre.

Titular roles don’t come more challenging than those of Miguel de Cervantes, the Man of La Mancha and John Merrick, better known as The Elephant Man, so why not increase the challenge by casting the roles with performers whose fortés are outside of standard theatre? Cinnabar Theater Director Elly Lichenstein has Daniel Cilli, primarily an opera singer, in the dual role of Cervantes and Don Quixote, while Michael Tabib of Curtain Call Theatre has cast stand-up comedian James Rowan as Merrick. Both gentlemen do honor to their characters. La Mancha is set in the bowels of a 16th century Spanish prison, where Cervantes awaits his fate at the hands of the Spanish Inquisition. Stripped of his belongings by the other prisoners, Cervantes pleads for the return of his manuscript of Don Quixote and demands a trial. His defense will be a reenactment of his story of honor and love. He will play the title role with his also-imprisoned manservant (Michael Van Why) as Sancho Panza. Other prisoners are drafted into roles as the tale is told. And sung, because it is a musical after all. Under musical director Mary Chun, Cilli’s magnificent baritone is the perfect match for the Mitch Leigh & Joe Dario score culminating with a show-stopping version of “The Impossible Dream.” He sets the standard for musical performance in this show, and is met by Daniela Innocenti-Beem as his Dulcinea with the heart-breaking “Aldonza”. Nice vocal work is also done by Kevin Gino as the Padre. A necessary lighter tone is brought to this often-dark production courtesy of Van Why with “I Really Like Him” and Mary Gannon Graham as the Housekeeper in “I’m Only Thinking of Him”. Other quality performers round out the ensemble. Befitting a show with a budget, there’s a dank and detailed dungeon set by Wayne Hovey and appropriately grimy costumes by Abra Berman. Chun continues her award-winning work at Cinnabar with a six-piece orchestra that fills the auditorium with the Tony-winning score. Lichenstein wasn’t tilting at windmills when deciding to bring this production to the North Bay. A quest to Petaluma to catch this production will bring ample reward. On the opposite side of the budget spectrum lies Monte Rio’s Curtain Call Theatre. Housed in the Russian River Hall, they’ve impressed me in the past with what they’re able to do with minimal resources. Their current production of The Elephant Man utilizes projections more so than set pieces to evoke a sense of time and place and, because of the playwright’s desire to not recreate the physical deformities that afflicted the title character, allows the audience to get past that potential distraction by displaying photographs taken of John Merrick and his condition. That leaves it to James Rowan to give the audience the inner character. Best known for hosting and performing comedy at local taprooms, he’s begun dipping his toes in local theatre. There’s ample evidence that comedians make good actors (and, conversely, that actors do a lousy job playing comedians) and Rowan’s name can be added to that list. He gives a very human performance as Merrick that recalls John Hurt’s brilliant work in the same-titled film. For those unfamiliar with the story, it’s the fact-based tale of John Merrick, the doctor who rescued him from his “freak show” existence, his life as a resident of London Hospital and his transformation into an A-list member of British society. The cast consists of Curtain Call regulars and Tabib guides them in doing good work, but it all comes down to Rowan’s believability as the title character. His commitment to Merrick - his physicality and his manner of speech - is admirable. More importantly, he brings Merrick’s humanity to the forefront, particularly in several very touching scenes with Segal/Kendall. The Elephant Man is an excellent example of how, while technical elements often play an important part in a production’s success, a strong central performance is what really makes a show.
