I spoke with Lisa Howard because I recall making assumptions about “activists” in previous years, especially as it relates to climate change. Full disclosure, I KNEW NOTHING about the state of our planet or the climate and simply parroted what I would hear conservative pundits assert. . SO now, I have conversations like these to learn, expand my perspective, and shift where necessary. This conversation applies to anyone who sees a problem and actively works to make the situation better for themselves and others. May we all adopt this title! Talking to Lisa was lovely because it helped me understand the heart behind many activists - regardless of their cause. The term “activist” gets a bad rap in some settings, but regardless of the cause - I have a newfound admiration for those who commit time, talent, and energy and take risks for something they believe in - and I count myself among them. Our Guest:Lisa Howard is the co-leader of the Sacramento-Roseville chapter of Citizens' Climate Lobby (CCL), a state coordinator for CCL, and a member of the Sacramento chapter of Al Gore's Climate Reality Project. Lisa's focus is on inspiring others to believe that one person can make a difference, motivating people to take action on the climate crisis, and giving folks the tools they need to get started. She has a black belt in taekwondo, a degree in journalism, and a day job as a webmaster for a charter school. Her two kids are the reason she got involved in climate activism and the reason she continues to fight for a better future.Website: https://www.sacramentoccl.org/Instagram link: https://www.instagram.com/cclsacramento/Facebook link: https://www.facebook.com/CCLsacramento About Jen Oliver:I pursue and create environments where we converse on the REAL stuff that changes us. When I was little my dad used to say, “You want fair? Go to Turlock in August.” That's when and where the county fair was held each year. That was his way of saying life wasn't fair and that was too bad. Dr Bob Choat started our conversation off by talking about culture and how, depending on where you are and what biases you have, fair might be seen differently. For Lisa Howard two words came to mind first, balanced and impartial. She then went on to add, moral, ethical, free of bias and favoritism. She believes a situation has to be looked at holistically to determine if it is fair. Brett Knopf agreed, adding there is a subjectivity to it. He considered the question from a negotiation standpoint. In that case, fairness is both parties walking away satisfied. I believe there is an element of expectation when it comes to fairness. In the conversation I shared a funny story of my sister explaining to her four-year-old why it was “fair” for them to split a chocolate bar one third to the toddler and two-thirds to my sister. Fair doesn't always mean equal. Another little antidote from my childhood – If I was splitting something with a sibling my mom would always have one of us cut it and the other one got to choose their half first. You have never seen such careful halving of something as me cutting something knowing my sibling would choose the larger half. What do you think it means for something to be fair? Is fairness a thing in the adult world? Connect with the panelists: Lisa Howard: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lhoward2/ Is the Founder of the HR consulting company, People Core Strategies. Plenty can change in a year, particularly in the publishing industry. A year after the media business slipped into a downturn, the upswing seems to have started, at least for Hearst Magazines. “We're actually seeing more [requests for proposals from advertisers] for 2024 than we had seen at this time last year,” Hearst Magazines evp and global chief revenue officer Lisa Howard said on the latest Digiday Podcast episode. In another positive sign, the publisher is also seeing more interest in upper-funnel, brand awareness options for advertisers after a year-plus of brands prioritizing lower-funnel, performance-oriented tactics. “I am hearing from brands that they, in some cases, do feel like they over-rotated to that lower-funnel, more just juicing sales strategy because everybody was — we were all fearful of a recession,” said Howard. For its part, Hearst Magazines made a similar shift toward lower-funnel, performance-oriented sales. After Howard joined Hearst from The New York Times in October 2022, the publisher decided to cut back on “big, complex, long-lead content programs” in favor of a “maniacal focus ... on digital media that works and can work quickly for our advertisers,” she said. While Hearst has continued to sell those long-lead content campaigns, it has seen fewer requests from advertisers for those opportunities compared to standard ad buys with shorter lead and flight times. That's not to say that Hearst Magazines is pulling the plug on the big content deals, such as a program sponsored by Cartier for Harper's Bazaar that launched this month and plans for an upcoming franchise tied to Women's Health and timed to next year's Olympic Games. Those deals are “not our primary focus, but where the need calls for it, we're building programs,” said Howard.
In the previous episode you learned about the 30-year journey of 9 to 5, from a movie to a a big hit song to a TV show and eventually a Broadway musical. And in this bonus interview episode, you'll hear from Lisa Howard, one of the ensemble members in 9 to 5 who played Franklin Hart's wife and was a part of the show from its early days in Los Angeles until its closing night on Broadway. She gives behind the scenes insights into the rehearsal process and some of the challenges this show faced just getting onstage and actually making it through a performance without stopping. But wait, there's more! You'll also get an extra conversation about another musical Lisa did at the Marquis Theatre: Escape to Margaritaville. Now, this musical went through 4 out-of-town tryouts in 2017 before finally coming to Broadway the following year. But Margaritaville and its Jimmy Buffett score met with mixed reviews and only lasted 3.5 months at the Marquis. --- Closing Night is a production of WINMI Media with Patrick Oliver Jones as host and executive producer. When 9 to 5 premiered on Broadway in 2009, the musical had all the makings of a surefire hit: it was based on a beloved classic comedic film and had one of the catchiest pop hits of the 80s by none other than Dolly Parton. Needless to say, 9 to 5 the Musical was eagerly anticipated by fans of the movie and theatergoers alike. The film's message of female empowerment and standing up against workplace discrimination has continued to resonate with audiences. Add to that a star-studded cast and an award-winning creative team that included the Grammy-winning Queen of country music herself, this show had everything going for it. Yet despite the initial buzz and excitement, 9 to 5 struggled to maintain its momentum on Broadway and clocked out of the Marquis Theatre after less than five months. Was this a case of bad reviews, bad decisions, or simply bad luck? As we'll discover, there were many factors that contributed to such a short run on Broadway. But perhaps the most intriguing aspect of this story is how it illuminates the inner workings of the movie-to-musical pipeline and the delicate balance between making art and making money. This question came up because I have a friend in the UK who has commented on several occasions how we (North Americans) use “how are you” as a greeting rather than a question. But when he asks me, he is actually asking the question and wants an answer other than “fine.” I asked Atif Agha to start this conversation off and he talked about being aware. It is the right friend and the right time to actually get into the true answer of how you are. Some people don't need or want more detail than “I'm fine.” Glady Baradaran says she has tried to teach herself not to ask “how are you?” She doesn't like it when people ask that as a greeting and believes there are so many other, better questions you can ask someone. Lisa Howard made the observation that if things aren't great and a friend asks, she might say something like “going okay” or “hanging in there.” If the friend picks up from her tone that things aren't great and stops to ask for more details or to listen, then she knows she can share a bit more. But if they must brush over it, she just keeps the details to herself. What do you think of the question “how are you” and how do you answer it? For Hearst global chief revenue officer Lisa Howard, the shift to focus mostly on subscriptions at many publishers obscures the reality that advertising will continue to be the dominant monetization form for most media, including Hearst. Lisa discussed the power of ads and the resilience of legacy media during a live podcast recording at The New Attention Economy on Tuesday.
The Shrinks welcome hospice nurse (and beautiful soul) Lisa Howard, RN, BSN to talk about the various aspects of this sacred work.
As collaborative as theater can be, there are sometimes when the creative process can be more like herding cats—with no clear direction as everyone tries to get on the same page…hopefully. And that's Broadway or community theater, a web series or major motion picture. I've certainly been in shows that started off a bit chaotic but got better as the cast and creative team could unify around a singular vision for the show. But today's guest has a few stories about the various ways shows come together, some more successful than others. Lisa Howard began her Broadway career almost 20 years ago with a little show with a big name: The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Since then she's gone on to originate roles in three other Broadway shows and will be talking about two of them in this episode. The first is 9 to 5, which she calls one of the roughest rehearsal periods she's ever gone through, followed up by Escape to Margaritaville, a fun show for the cast that didn't find as much fun here in New York City. And we end with a discussion of a topic that she says comes up in every interview--but for this podcast, she wanted to talk about it on her own terms rather than it being something someone else found brave or unusual. Timeline of this episode's conversation: 02:50 - Lisa and me performing in 42ND STREET at Goodspeed 04:58 - Lisa shares what made SPELLING BEE so much fun 09:55 - Story #1: 9 TO 5's rough rehearsal process 22:12 - How to become a subscriber and stop listening to these promos :) 23:34 - Story #2: Why Escape to Margaritaville was fun for the cast but not audiences 35:14 - Story #3: How being plus-sized is portrayed onstage and in interviews Subscribe to WINMI If you wanna listen to the full conversation (with Audition Stories and the Final Five questions) as well as get early access to every episode, then become a monthly or yearly subscriber to Why I'll Never Make It. Tolenas Winery is a family-owned and operated vineyard and winery committed to producing high quality wines that speak to the terrior of Suisun Valley, California. Founded by Lisa and Cliff Howard in 2015, Tolenas Winery is the next chapter of a family legacy that can be traced back to over 40 years ago.Lisa's family has lived in Suisun Valley since 1982. After moving to the area, her parents, Steve and Linda Tenbrink, began farming and eventually started their own winery, Tenbrink Winery and Vineyards. Those early years on her parents' farm were foundational in shaping the winemaking philosophy Lisa and Cliff would later adopt. In 2010, 55 acres of prunes, wine grapes, and almonds went up for sale in Suisun Valley. Though Lisa and Cliff were living in Arizona at the time, they both jumped at the opportunity to leave a good life for a great life and move back to Lisa's hometown to embark on their wine industry journey. With the help and guidance of Lisa's family, the couple became self-taught winemakers ready to launch their own winery.Since those early days, Lisa and Cliff have transitioned all 55 acres of their property to growing wine grapes and have expanded from producing 96 cases a year to more than 1,000 cases. Today, Lisa and Cliff are proud second-generation winemakers on a mission to produce wines as naturally as possible while maintaining the quality and regionality. They are committed to protecting the land and preserving the integrity of their wines. This includes taking a more hands-on approach and abstaining from disturbing the vines with chemicals or unnecessary additives. The name for the winery's label was born after Lisa found an old deed that listed the 55-acre property as Lot #38 of Rancho Tolenas, the Mexican land grant that spanned Solano and Napa Counties in the 1800s. The name is an homage to the pioneer spirit and history of the Suisun Valley. It also speaks to Lisa and Cliff's goals of continuing to grow Tolenas Winery into a California wine industry pioneer.Over the course of the last five years, Tolenas Winery has focused on perfecting the quality of its exclusive family of wines. This list includes premium wines like a Suisun Valley Red Blend, Rosé, Sauvignon Blanc, and the Eclipse, a white pinot noir that won a gold medal at the International Women's Wine Competition. In the future, the company hopes to add a sparkling wine to this list and a tasting room to the property as well.

5 years ago, the host of this podcast, David Lane, was invited to be the arranger and later the musical director for The Collins Boy. Working with the writers Brad Bass and Cari Joy, working with actors like Lisa Howard, Tony Galde, and Russell Fisher, and playing for audiences in NYC and Atlanta have been one of the best experiences! Brad is no stranger to Broadway. He was on-stage for a decade with Wicked, Memphis, and Jersey Boys. Eventually, he left NYC to focus on teaching and becoming a writer. His long-time writing partner, Cari Joy, is a songwriter, pianist, and teacher. This is a musical that is still being developed, but set a crowd record at the 2019 Atlanta Musical Theatre Festival. We talk about that show from where it started to where it's gone to where it's going! Follow the podcast on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter @LifeInThePitPod. It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today we return to Winephabet Street to learn about the letter P, Petite Sirah! Often confused by new winelovers as just a smaller version of Syrah or Shiraz, it is in fact a completely different variety. Petite Sirah, also known as Durif, is a man-made variety that resulted from a cross between Syrah and Peloursin. The objective of the cross was to make a grape variety that is resistant to powdery mildew. It was first brought to California in 1884 by Charles McIver and had a similar history to Zinfandel during Prohibition thanks to its ability to travel cross country well. I had the privilege of sitting down with Steve Tenbrink of Tenbrink Cellars and his daughter Lisa Howard of Tolenas Winery in Suisun Valley, California. Petite Sirah Capital of the World.
