When Waylon Jennings offers Jeremy an opening slot on his tour, he jumps at the opportunity. However, he gets kicked off the tour bus after 30 minutes. The good news is that before he gets tossed, Waylon rechristens Jeremy "Uncle Drank." From there he is off to the races, writing more songs in Florida and engaging in payola to get them on the radio. His songs becomes minor hits and Drank's popularity begins to rise. But, when Waylon Jennings' legal team decides to sue Uncle Drank for some songwriting royalties, Hayseed wonders if his career will survive the lawsuit

On today's podcast I'm featuring my roadtrip to the Hospice du Rhone event. It's an atypical wine tasting in California. In the French Rhone Valley region there are a great number of wine varieties and 22 of them were featured. 125 Wine producers from California, Oregon, Washington, and France were in attendance. During the weekend I spoke with General Manager and family member Jason Haas from Paso Robles' Rhone winemaking pioneer Tablas Creek Vineyard, winery owner Ted Ross of Hayseed and Housdon, who donates 50% of his wine sales to local charities, and Elena Barrios, who with her winemaking husband are gaining attention with their outstanding Rhone varietal blends at Top Winery. If you like Grenache, Syrah and Viognier but haven't tried Picpoul Blanc or Bourboulenc, you might want to join the fun next year. Me.I decided that instead of making up some elaborate story about the show's absence, I would just have a quick show about the origins of Hayseed Junction and why I decided to so the show in the first place.

This week features the first installation of Hayseed Junction History. Listen to the story of Buster Skeets; one of Hayseed Junction's most storied historical characters. Hayseed Junction Radio will be back to regular programming next week with guest host Earl Putnam.

Christmas is knocking on the door in Hayseed Junction and Burt is happy to be bringing you the last show of 2019. Aside from the local news, we hear from Sheriff Walt Combs and have a few holiday greetings to send out. Also, we hear about a new show coming next year for you folks. Finally, Jordan needs a little encouragement when the commercial break doesn't go so well.

We're one week closer to Christmas in Hayseed Junction and Burt is so excited that the whole town is in the proper spirit.  Aside from the local news, Burt has a conversation with Heide Fontaine about Christmas related relationship advice and we hear from the head coach of the Hayseed Junction Shiners.  Finally, Burt has a message for the audience of Hayseed Junction for the Christmas season.

Hayseed Junction Radio is back and everyone is excited it grows closer to Christmas.  Burt has a history lesson of how Hayseed Junction became a town before he gets into the local news.  Tim Lynn, the lifeguard of the Hayseed Junction swimming pool has a message for the people in town and Burt talks to Buck Harvin from Harvin's Lumber and Carpet Emporium.

It's that time again.  Thanksgiving is over and the boys talk about their holidays and a trip to Roger Herrmann's.  Burt brings you the local news, we hear a message from Steve Johnson of Capital Punishment Gun Shop and we have a conversation with Hayseed Junction's newly elected Mayor.  Finally, Burt has a birthday message for a close friend.

Burt has to start the show off with a little bit of bad news, but then he gets into the local news of what's happening around town.  Then, we hear from the Fish and Wildlife Department about what Slackjaw County residents should hunt next.  Burt and Roger Herrmann talk about the new menu items at Herrmann's On the Cliff and then Terry V checks in from the Slackjaw County water tower.

November is half over and Hayseed Junction is just about ready for Thanksgiving.  Burt lets you in on a little Thanksgiving tradition in Hayseed and we get to talk to the commission of Antiquities of Hayseed Junction; plus a word from the Department of Health from Slackjaw County.

Jelena Subotic of Georgia State University is an accomplished scholar of International Relations who focuses on the politics of memory and identity, transitional justice, international ethics, and ontological security studies. She spoke with Brent about a number of topics during their conversation. Jelena discusses growing up in Yugoslavia and how identity became an issue 'overnight' in the late 1980s, going to LSE for undergraduate studies while Yugoslavia was breaking up, being a DJ at a Belgrade radio station in the 1990s, the feeling of bombs during the NATO war on Serbia in 1999, moving to the US and graduate school at Syracuse and then Wisconsin-Madison, the tough transition to a tenure-track position at GSU, and the feeling of 'I'm going to be alright' after her first book was accepted with Cornell University Press. She also discusses how she approaches writing, how she was introduced to tennis, her adventures on twitter, and much more!

Cian O'Driscoll is a Professor of International Relations, pursuing topics related to Just War, ethics, and international security. In this second part of Brent's interview with Cian, they discuss his early years as a junior scholar, including publishing, transitioning into his position at Glasgow, the infamous Elshtain book roundtable at the 2007 ISA, the International Ethics section of the ISA and the people he met there, his practice of writing, finding his voice, his philosophy on reviewing, and what he does to recharge and keep at it. 

Cian O'Driscoll from the University of Glasgow does work on Just War theory, international security, and international political theory, and international ethics. He has been a friend of Brent's for well over a decade. They spoke in April 2019 following a workshop at the University of Warwick. Their conversation went a little long, so this is part 1 of 2 episodes with Cian. In this episode, Cian tells us about his intellectual journey: growing up in Limerick and going to the uni there, spending some time in the US, his Master's work at Dalhousie in Nova Scotia, his memory of September 11th, being on one of the first flights back into the US shortly thereafter, Irish neutrality and Michael Walzer's work, and his first year or so of PhD at Aberystwyth University (Wales).

The first episode of the Hayseed Scholar podcast is an interview with Professor Peri Schwartz-Shea of the University of Utah. We discuss her evolution as a scholar and academic, the questions she's pursued in her research, and how she became so interested in interpretive methods.

We talk with Hayseed Ventures COO Scott Andrews. Hayseed Ventures is a VC Production Studio located in Northwest Arkansas. They are actively working to change the face of startups in Northwest Arkansas and to cultivate a culture of entrepreneurship in beautiful downtown Fayetteville.  Q : What do you do? Scott: We are a startup that starts startups. We are a venture studio, with a team of 7, we partner with early stage companies and help them raise funds. Our goal is to work with 6 to 8 companies a year. Q : Who is John James? Scott: He is a physician by profession who likes to build businesses. He figured out how to arbitrage keywords back in the 90s with google adword traffic and became a huge portion of it, he built Grill Stuff and started Acumen brands (monetizing facebook). Q: What is your competitive advantage? Scott: Customer Acquisition. We understand the process of getting the data, analyzing it and creating the economic machine that drives it. Q: What are some of your current portfolios. Scott: We actually have 5. One is the Q-Ball, it's a quiz ball reloaded. We built the content behind the machine and then built a SaaS business around it and built an online platform for it Q: What kind of companies you work for? Scott: A company that is early but has some tractions, some customers and some revenues. Example: Menguin (Online Tuxedo Rental) Q: Your model, how it is different from venture fund or from incubator or accelerator? Scott: Its kind a mixed of everything. Our revenue is like a venture fund. We are co-founder. Q : How did you come to work for Hayseed Ventures? Scott: My interest is to work with a lot of different engineers and to continuously learn and learn about new things. Q: What advice could you give to entrepreneurs who might want to talk to Hayseed? Scott: Any entrepreneur needs to understand the problem they are solving, If you have specific interest or understanding, turn into competitive advantage. Q: What do you look for entrepreneurs or businesses to work with? Scott: We have a checklist and the top 3 are: Can we test this quickly? Can we reiterate it quickly and can we do it cheaply? And aside from these, we also identify if the business is a 10 million dollar business, if not then it is not something that we mess with. Does it have a clear customer acquisition strategy? Q: Why should entrepreneurs come to Hayseed? Scott: With a team having different brains, you get a lot of experience thinking about you all the time and you get a lot of contacts. An accelerator would introduce you to a lot of people and say go figure it out; a venture capital groups would say here's the check, go figure it out. We'll say come work with us, we will help you figure it out. We are hands-on and we're teacher, not doers. We will teach you how to run your social strategy, how to manage your website and how to raise capital. Q: What needs to happen next to make this whole Northwest Arkansas rock and roll? Scott: I think we need to continue the path that we're going, we're starting to create density. Find ways to retain talents. Q: What is your message to big companies, why do they need to care about this startup things? Scott: I think that when we do better, they'll do better as well. They're going to be able to attract more talents and provide more service to them. Q: Why should they come to this region? Scott: This region is the Silicon Valley for retail. You've got Fortune One and everything that supports it. There are vendors and world-class educational institution here. Howdy Pardner, is you ready fer a western adventure? For Quackcast 202 we decided to build on the experiment we started in Quackcast 201. We constructed a play quickly with four people all working together. It took us all 3 hours to write, collaborating on a Google doc and over skype to make a half hour play, and it seems to have turned out pretty nicely! This is the last for now in our writing exercises. We only really show the play here and not the 3 hours of umming and ah-ing as we worked on it, because that was too much to edit down, but if it's something people would like to hear maybe we'll make a condensed version available some time in the future. Megan Paska grew up gardening with her mother and grandmother in Maryland, and spent her summers on her family’s 450-acre farmstead in rural Virginia. When she moved to Brooklyn, NY in 2006, she found that her landlords were enthusiastic about her putting up a raised bed vegetable garden in the backyard. Soon after came bees and honey, then the chickens and fresh eggs.
