LORI'S ADVICE:  "For employers, I'd say, what is the current experience that your new parents are having? Ask that question. Can you answer the question, what is the experience that they're having? If you don't really know the answer, then go talk to them and do exactly what Rebecca's employer did, which is to ask for their feedback." REBECCA'S ADVICE:  "Be bold and ask the questions that need to be asked. But we need to take it one step further and think of how what you're saying will be received, or what you're asking will be received to that particular audience. Because that can really help you adapt and ask it the right way where you're going to get the response that you really need."

The Law Firm Leadership Podcast | We Interview Corp Defense Law Firm Leaders, Partners, General Counsel and Legal Consultants

“We are both keeper-in-touchers,” says Jason Levin, author of the book Relationships to Infinity, which studies the art and science of keeping in touch. He and his wife Lori Mihalich-Levin first met on September 11, 2001 in France and stayed in contact as Lori built her law career and Jason built a career which includes his current role as a keynote speaker, trainer and business development coach at Ready, Set, Launch. This practice of keeping in touch has carried over into their married life as well. In a conversation at the kitchen sink, having put their two young sons to bed, Lori asked why there wasn't a program to help new parents navigate their personal and professional lives. After Jason asked her what she could do to solve the problem, she began in earnest what would become Mindful Returns, a program which guides new parents transition back to work after parental leave.    The two touch base each Saturday night by consolidating what they call the “daily detritus” into one basket in order to tackle the duties of parenthood together. This idea was inspired by Atul Gawande's “Checklist Manifesto. The two have also been inspired by Eve Rodsky's book “Fair Play,” and they discuss the importance of a balanced division of labor in a household.   Lori and Jason's support for one another is obvious. Join today's discussion to hear their advice on how to write a book or make a speech in public and find out how Jason earned the name The TicTac Guy!   Quotes   “The foundation of Relationships to Infinity is the social science behind networks, and how we think about our approach to connection and reconnection. Lori was just talking about the fact that we both are ‘keeper-in-touchers.' There's actually a lot of social science behind that.” (8:44 | Jason) “I said to my dear husband, ‘There should be a program out there, a class I can take about how to transition into working parenthood. I can take a class on how to massage my baby, puree baby food, make a birth plan. I can't take a class on how to navigate the personal and professional identity crisis I'm having as I become a working parent. And Jason said, ‘Well, what are you going to do about it?' And thus, the program that I created, Mindful Return, was born.” (10:53 | Lori) “Too often when we think about building something entrepreneurial, it has to be in the garage, venture funded, all these things. But what if you take little bite sized pieces with mind numbing detail on a weekly basis and you build something?” (14:26 | Jason)  “There are so many dual career working couples these days, that this is an issue and it spills into the workplace too. Because if you have if you're doing 90% of the mental work of your household, you're just not able to focus on your job as much as someone who is doing 10% of the mental work of a household.” (21:52 | Lori)  “Parenthood made me so much of a better public speaker, because before we had kids, I would stew about the slides. And I would sit there and analyze them, and I'd memorize my script. And then we had kids, and I said, ‘I don't have time for any of that. And I just showed up as who I was, and I was much more spontaneous, and I hadn't over prepared anything, and people liked that better.” (33:14 | Lori) Links The Checklist Manifesto - Atul Gawal https://a.co/d/hppObRx Fair Play: A Game-Changing Solution for When You Have Too Much to Do By Eve Rodsky https://a.co/d/6ZoaX2O Parents at Work Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/parents-at-work/id1239258343   Connect with  Lori Mihalich-Levin: LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/lorimihalichlevin/ Mindful Return https://www.mindfulreturn.com/ Lori's book - Back to Work After Baby - https://www.mindfulreturn.com/back-work-after-baby-book/   Connect with Jason Levin: READY, SET, LAUNCH readysetlaunch.net LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jasonlevinspeakertrainercoach/ Jason's book - Relationships to Infinity   Connect with Chris Batz: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chrisbatz/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theliongroupkc  Instagram: @theliongroupllc Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Psychologists Off The Clock: A Psychology Podcast About The Science And Practice Of Living Well

Working parenthood is not for the faint of heart. Sometimes the stress of toggling between family and professional roles can feel like too much! And... it can also be a meaningful source of joy, inspiration, and creativity.  In this extra special episode, we talk to our very own co-host, Dr. Yael Schonbrun about her new book, Work, Parent Thrive: 12 Science-Backed Strategies to Ditch Guilt, Manage Overwhelm, and Grow Connection (When Everything Feels Like Too Much). Yael draws on psychology research as well as her own experience as a working mom of three, to offer ideas that will help even the most stressed of working parents! This book banishes the idea that the key to ultimate working parenthood is the ability to do it all. Instead, the key is to learn how these roles, together, help you thrive. Listen and Learn:  ●      How Yael's own experience as a hard-working mother of three informed her ideas for her book.  ●      How to shift from a “work family conflict mindset” to a “work family enrichment mindset” ●      Why interruptions that feel really annoying might actually be good for you.  ●      Whether or not finding perfect work-life balance is a realistic goal (spoiler alert: it's not) ●      The role of values in making choices about work and family  ●      How to deal with parental guilt effectively ●      How working parenthood offers opportunities for growth ●      About how cooking has offered Jill a lesson in when to grit and when to quit ●      The power of rest, and what Yael is up to on her tech-free Saturday sabbath days  Resources: ●      Get your copy of Work, Parent, Thrive!  ●      Check out Yael's webpage and her POTC episodes!  ●      Read Yael's New York Times article on working parenthood, and other media appearances in the Wall Street Journal, Greater Good Science Center, Behavioral Scientist, Kveller, Lilith Magazine, The Wise Brain Bulletin, Psychology Today, and Motherly.  ●      Grab your copy of all our favorite books at bookshop.org/shop/offtheclockpsych. ●      Check out Debbie, Yael, and Jill's websites to access their offerings, sign up for their newsletters, buy their books, and more!  About Yael: Dr. Yael Schonbrun is a co-host of the greatest podcast of all times, Psychologists Off the Clock, and that's all you need to know about her.  Just kidding! Yael Schonbrun, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist, assistant professor at Brown University, co-host of Psychologists Off the Clock, and mother of three. She has a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and completed her postgraduate training at Brown University. Yael's academic research explores the interaction between relationship problems and mental health conditions. Lori Mihalich-Levin is the Founder and CEO of Mindful Return, a movement that helps new parents navigate the uncertain terrain of working parenthood. Currently, 92 employers offer the Mindful Return program to support employees in their transition to working parenthood. Additionally, Lori is the author of Back to Work After Baby: How to Plan and Navigate a Mindful Return from Maternity Leave and created the Mindful Return Maternity Leave E-Course. She also co-hosts the Parents At Work podcast and is a healthcare lawyer in private practice at her own firm, The GME Group, PLLC. Lori's thought leadership on issues related to working parenthood has been featured in publications including Forbes, The Washington Post, and New York Times Parenting. As a working parent of two boys, Lori understands the need for a supportive community of working parents — especially when you're first transitioning from parental leave. Her mission is to help parents feel empowered to make thoughtful choices and be present both with their babies and in their careers. In this episode… Working parents wear many hats and often struggle to find the support needed to thrive in both their personal life and professional career. After transitioning back to work after parental leave, numerous parents deal with the guilt of leaving their children, logistical challenges of finding childcare, and a lack of confidence that they can show up the way they used to at work. Can new parents find success in both areas of their life without sacrifice? When Lori Mihalich-Levin was a new mom transitioning back into her legal career, she found many resources focused on the baby but nothing about personal and professional identity transition. Desperate for help as a working parent, Lori created her own program, Mindful Return, which helps new parents gain support from other working parents and find the resources needed to grow in all areas of their life. But Mindful Return doesn't stop with the parents — Lori and her team are on a mission to help employers retain new parent talent and keep their employees' careers on an upward trajectory. In this episode of The Lawyer's Edge Podcast, Elise Holtzman sits down with Lori Mihalich-Levin, the Founder and CEO of Mindful Return, to talk about working parenthood and parental leave. Lori discusses the importance of destigmatizing parental leave for both men and women, how employers can help new parents navigate the transition, and how Mindful Return is helping both new and experienced parents succeed in their personal and professional life.

Returning to work has been known to be difficult for new parents for a wide variety of reasons: lack of sleep, implicit biases that new parents face, finding the time and space to pump breast milk, postpartum, hormonal changes, separation anxiety and guilt, getting back in the swing of work duties and schedules, and so much more. According to Parents.com, women are three times more likely than men to have to leave the workforce due to pandemic-related child care demands. Lori Mihalich-Levin, CEO of Mindful Return and advocate for working parents said, it's important that new parents connect with other parents who are returning to work, talk to a therapist, or social worker to receive support and normalize the stresses and fears that one may be facing alone. She also advised for parents to take parental leave, as it is necessary for recovery and can help destigmatize caregiving for both men and women. "I'd say that you shouldn't feel any guilt about wanting to start your baby's life off on a healthy foot and to recover yourself. So I'd say, ditch the guilt. This is a major life event and the work will be there and you'll be okay if you take some time to pause," Mihalich-Levin said. " When it becomes completely normal for a new parent, whether a man or a woman to take a leave, then there will be less discrimination against women in the hiring process." She said a good parental leave policy is gender neutral and provides about six months in paid leave. If your job doesn't have this kind of parental leave policy, she advised that people create working parent groups to seek change in their workplace or connect with local advocacy groups to make a difference.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today, my guest is Lori Mihalich-Levin. Laurie is an attorney who, as she likes to say, practices law as a side gig. She's a solo practitioner and also the founder of called Mindful Return. This is a really interesting business organization, course, book, and blog, all about the issues regarding the return to the workplace of parents after parental leave and that more transient dynamic that is associated with going on parental leave. It's a fascinating discussion, I think she's hit on something that is really important in the workplace and is certain to grow by leaps and bounds going forward. So I'm very happy to be able to share with you my conversation with Lori Mihalich-Levin!   In this episode, Neil and Lori discuss: How Lori balances practicing law, running Mindful Return, and being a mom to 2 rambunctious boys. What it means to do policy work.  The importance of taking care of parents returning to work (that doesn't have to do with the baby only).  Setting boundaries with work.    Key Takeaways: There are more practice areas than are talked about in law school.  More work than most people know goes into the policy log that is referenced in 30 sections on the evening news.  Build in time for micro moments of mindfulness as new parents. Small, intentional changes throughout your day will drastically change how you show up for yourself, your clients, and your children.  More and more places have gender neutral leave policies, but it is still not equal.    "What I wish is that employers would focus more on conversations around logistics, making fewer assumptions around or just dictating, having open ended conversations, and recognizing that the person who left before they had a child is not the same person who was coming back afterwards." —  Lori Mihalich-Levin   Get in touch with Lori Mihalich-Levin: Website: https://www.mindfulreturn.com/ (https://www.mindfulreturn.com/)  Book: https://www.mindfulreturn.com/back-work-after-baby-book/ (https://www.mindfulreturn.com/back-work-after-baby-book/)  Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/parents-at-work/id1239258343 (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/parents-at-work/id1239258343)  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lorimihalichlevin/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/lorimihalichlevin/)  Twitter: https://twitter.com/mindfulreturn (https://twitter.com/mindfulreturn)    Thank you to our sponsors! http://callruby.com/lawentrepreneur (Ruby Receptionist) - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to http://callruby.com/lawentrepreneur (callruby.com/lawentrepreneur) or call 844.895.7829 Coach Rockwell - Mark Rockwell works with lawyers who are frustrated by their inability to scale up and become more profitable. Lori Mihalich-Levin and Jason Levin are happy to be back after a winter hiatus! In this episode of Parents at Work, they pick up on their tradition of interviewing moms and dads in various industries and sectors. Today, Lori and Jason talk to two inspiring moms, Christina Cary and Debbie Tang, both professionals in executive search.   Christina is a partner at Heidrick & Struggles. Her search work focuses on functional roles in human resources, including CHRO, CPO, divisional and regional heads of HR, and centers of excellence leaders in talent management, talent acquisition, learning and development, HR operations, total rewards, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.  Christina is a member of the Georgetown University board of governors. She is a former president of Hoyas Unlimited, Georgetown's annual fundraising arm for athletics that supports excellence across all the university's 29 intercollegiate sports.  Christina's most important job is being a mom to her son Benjamin and daughter Abigail. Benjamin, known as Ben, Bennie, or Bubba, is a funny, curious, and loving little boy who will turn five in June. Abigail, also known as Abby, is a rambunctious, smiley, fearless little girl who will be two in April. Christina is married to Patrick (Pat), and the Carey family resides in Bethesda, Maryland. Debbie Tang is a partner at Bridge Partners, a black-owned executive search firm focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Debbie leads global executive searches in both the private and public sectors, from Fortune 100 companies to universities, non-profits, and government agencies. She recruits diverse senior executives across all functions, including CEO, CFO, General Counsels, Chief Legal Officers, Board, and regulatory leaders, in a wide variety of industries.  Debbie is actively involved in the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association of the District of Columbia. She is also on the board of the Washington Project for the Arts and the Norwood School. She received a BA degree from McGill University and a JD from Washington and Lee School of Law, where she served on the Editorial Board of The Journal of Civil Rights and Social Justice. Debbie has a nine-year-old son, Ben, and a six-year-old daughter called C.C. In today's conversation, Christina and Debbie talk openly and honestly about being parents in executive search. They share their struggles, talk about workplace support systems, and get into finding the right work-life balance. They also discuss the value of developing relationships with colleagues who are also parents and the support systems they would like to have in the workplace.  Stay tuned today to hear Debbie and Christina's encouraging accounts of their lives as working moms. Show highlights: When Debbie started working crazy hours as an associate in big law before she became a mom, she used to wonder how the female partners with kids did it. (4:13) Christina has experienced a lot of parent flexibility in the executive search world. (7:55) Christina found the unpredictable world of executive search an excellent training ground for becoming a parent. (10:52) Now that Debbie has kids, she finally understands why high-powered executives sometimes make million-dollar career decisions based on their children. (13:08) Debbie explains why she found it easier to be a parent in executive search during the pandemic, when travel demands were reduced. (13:35) There are days when Christine feels that she is not doing what she needs to do in any area of her life - as a mom or at work. (14:25) Being mentored by a colleague who is a father of five has helped Christina immensely. (15:53) Heidrick & Struggles has recently implemented a formalized employee assistance program for anyone experiencing mental health issues. (17:00) At Bridge, they have two partners working on every search. That has made a world of difference to Debbie as a working parent. (18:01)...
