The episode begins with a deep dive into the latest retail and economic headlines that are shaping the landscape. Steve and Michael dissect the U.S. government shutdown, its ripple effects on employment, and how cost-cutting in Washington could further weaken an already fragile job market. They then examine new tariffs on furniture, cabinets, and agricultural exports, highlighting how the policies are squeezing retailers and farmers alike—particularly soybean producers, who have been hit hard by China's retaliation. The hosts also analyze the latest on TikTok's uncertain U.S. future, as political maneuvering opens the door to a controversial joint venture involving major tech and media figures. In retail performance, Costco's continued dominance and Nike's early turnaround efforts take center stage, as both giants adapt to shifting consumer sentiment and inflationary pressure. The segment concludes with a discussion of AI's growing impact on the workplace, holiday hiring trends, and how discretionary spending and de minimis trade rules could redefine retail economics on both sides of the border. Then, in a wide-ranging interview, David Kahan, President & CEO Birkenstock Americas delivers a masterclass in brand stewardship and retail strategy. He traces Birkenstock's roots from a humble German cobbler to a global fashion phenomenon—revealing how the brand's success rests on “never deviating from its DNA.” Every product begins with the footbed, he says, making comfort, health, and purpose inseparable from style.Kahan credits Birkenstock's ongoing cultural resonance—from the Barbie movie to red carpet collaborations—to disciplined brand management and “engineered distribution.” He explains how each Birkenstock store is a unique community experience, blending tactile engagement with hyper-local curation. The conversation also touches on leadership philosophy, emphasizing humility, trust, and an unwavering focus on brand equity over short-term sales. The Left and the Right Deserve Each Other https://www.odwyerpr.com/story/public/23694/2025-10-03/left-right-deserve-each-other.html Bill Burr Destroys His Reputation https://youtu.be/PECQihXJb_g?si=kFBcglMmm1tWs4c8 00:00:00 – Cold Open, CB Radio Day & Show Plans Kicks off with loose banter about “National CB Day” vs. truckers, old-school CB culture, travel plans, and lining up guest co-hosts; sets a playful tone before hinting at heavier news. 00:10:00 – “Escaping the Simulation” Article They dissect a Popular Mechanics piece (and Roman Yampolskiy's ideas) on whether we can exit a simulated reality, poke holes in the write-up, and riff on paradoxes, mass meditation, and overloading “the system” with AI fluff. 00:20:00 – Books & Models of Reality Bringing in My Big TOE (Tom Campbell), The Holographic Universe (Talbot), and The Simulation Hypothesis (Virk), Mike contrasts “level 2” takes with richer frameworks—e.g., distributed-mind generation of reality vs. a Linux-in-the-sky overseer. 00:30:00 – Can You Really Get Out? They argue escape likely requires death or radical detachment (no attachments, near-Zen), invoke “life review,” karma/progression RPG mechanics, and conclude there's no cheap hack—only becoming a better human. 00:40:00 – Mind Power, NPCs & Inner Monologue Into consciousness: people without inner monologues/mental imagery, social-cue humor, and how thought quality affects health and “the sim.” They chew on whether offloading thinking to AI weakens individual processing and spawns weirder glitches. 00:50:00 – Headlines: Drones, War Talk & Odd Death Quick hits: NATO-airspace drone incursions; skepticism about Venezuela “seize the airfields” stories; and a troubling Texas case (GOP staffer death by self-immolation) with sealed records that fuels speculation. 01:00:00 – Transparency & Global Gen-Z Protests On sealed files, political ties, and why Gen-Z is protesting globally—social-media chain reactions from Madagascar to Nepal; digital natives demanding change in the streets. 01:10:00 – Libya, UK Digital IDs & BoBo Craze Libya headlines resurface; talk turns to rumored UK digital ID rollouts (timing, pushback), then a detour into BoBo collectible toys, pop-culture virality, and retail charts going bonkers. 01:20:00 – Saudi Soft Power: EA & Entertainment Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund keeps buying influence—EA deal talk, AI plays, and mega-city “The Line”; frames the Riyadh comedy festival as part of a broader rebrand. 01:30:00 – Riyadh Comedy Festival: Burr & Chappelle Bill Burr gets roasted for cashing a $1.5M+ gig and praising KSA after slamming billionaires; Chappelle says it's “easier to talk here than in America.” They wonder who was invited, who wasn't, and whether any set will be released. 01:40:00 – Pitmaster… Deodorant?! Cratchet corner: Progresso launches BBQ-smoke “Pitmaster” deodorant to pair with its soup line; sold-out “Pit Kits” spur jokes about meme products and manufactured scarcity. 01:50:00 – “Jetpack Man” over LAX: Files Drop FOIA'd FBI docs muddy the mystery: pilots describe a humanoid-looking object with no visible propulsion; not a balloon, maybe not a person—just more questions and withheld pages. Cue wild “monkey suit goblin” punchlines. 02:00:00 – AI Music & Wrap They debut/talk AI-assisted songs (“Peg Your Jeans…”, “Chubby Puppy”), muse on 90s-grunge vibes, and plug Patreon/next shows. Navigating home improvement projects can be as tricky as walking a tightrope while juggling flaming chainsaws. Eric G and John Dudley take us on an exhilarating ride through the top ten home improvement projects that are basically designed to make a homeowner throw their hands up in despair. From the perils of electrical panel upgrades that could fry your circuits quicker than you can say 'DIY disaster,' to the nightmare of trying to fix water damage that could lead you into a mold-infested abyss, the duo lays it all out. They share tales of hapless homeowners who thought they could tackle roofing repairs, only to end up with a blue tarp covering their house for months, while the neighborhood kids use it as a makeshift fort. With their signature sarcasm, they remind us that some projects are best left to the pros, and that there's no shame in admitting you can't paint the Mona Lisa – or rewire your entire house for that matter. So buckle up, grab your tools (or don't), and let's dive headfirst into the world of home improvement follies where the stakes are high and the consequences are hilariously absurd.Takeaways: Attempting to upgrade your electrical panel is a surefire way to invite disaster; just call a pro instead! Water damage repair is not a DIY project—trust me, your health and home depend on professionals. Roof replacement sounds easy until you're knee-deep in plywood and regret—leave it to the experts. The only thing worse than bad tiling is the mold that follows; hire a pro to avoid a wet mess! Thinking of removing load-bearing walls? Yeah, that's a recipe for disaster—just don't do it! Deck construction may seem straightforward, but unless you want your BBQ party to turn into a disaster, hire the right people! This special 5th anniversary episode of the Remarkable Retail podcast marks a milestone: five years of insights, disruption, and conversations with the world's most innovative retail thinkers. We reflect on the pod's origin story during the early COVID lockdowns, tracing its evolution from Steve's book Remarkable Retail: How to Win & Keep Customers in the Age of Disruption into an industry-leading show featuring CEOs, founders, and thought leaders shaping global commerce. They share highlights from an impressive guest roster, including Scott Galloway (whose episode remains the most downloaded in the show's history), Artemis Patrick of Sephora, Hal Lawton of Tractor Supply, Chris Nicholas of Sam's Club, Joe Kudla of Vuori, and Neil Blumenthal of Warby Parker. Each clip showcases the powerful themes of customer centricity, innovation, and the relentless pursuit of remarkability. The centerpiece of the episode is a deep and engaging conversation with Seth Godin, returning for his sixth visit. Seth—bestselling author of classics including Purple Cow—first inspired the very language of “remarkability” in Steve's book and the podcast itself. Here, Seth reflects on why being remarkable matters more than ever in an era where “average is dead.” He warns leaders that chasing efficiency or “suck less” strategies won't suffice; brands must create conditions where customers want to talk about them. He draws a sharp distinction between simply being “better” through incremental improvements and being truly remarkable in ways that spark conversation, loyalty, and cultural resonance.Seth also delves into the impact of AI as the biggest societal shift since electricity. Rather than reducing costs by outsourcing tasks, he urges retailers to harness AI to enable new projects and creative possibilities. He illustrates this with his latest Kickstarter project—AI-driven card decks designed to spark learning, decision-making, and storytelling. For Seth, experimentation and accessible tools are the gateway to innovation, and he emphasizes that risk-taking in the AI era costs little but delivers exponential learning.Together, Michael, Steve, and Seth explore enduring themes: knowing who it's for and what it's for, the value of continuous improvement, and why shunning non-believers is essential to staying authentic. About UsSteve Dennis is a strategic advisor and keynote speaker focused on growth and innovation, who has also been named one of the world's top retail influencers. He is the bestselling authro of two books: Leaders Leap: Transforming Your Company at the Speed of Disruption and Remarkable Retail: How To Win & Keep Customers in the Age of Disruption. Can we talk about...? A podcast on leading for racial equity in philanthropy
Lilliane Ballesteros (Latino Community Fund) and Lindsay Boswell (Yakima Valley Community Foundation) join us to challenge philanthropy's biggest myths and self-imposed rules.Together they explore what it looks like to move money differently: from buying pom poms for community events to setting up ESG investment portfolios and even to making grants directly to individuals – and yes, all while staying in compliance. They share how they embrace compliance not as a barrier, but as a creative tool for showing up for community in authentic ways. This episode underscores a central truth: relationships don't happen over email. They happen when philanthropy shows up where community already is — at BBQs, celebrations and neighborhood gatherings — and when funders rethink data, time and compliance as levers for equity rather than excuses for delay. See the full episode guide. Each episode of season 3 spotlights lessons from Toward Transformation, Philanthropy Northwest's equity-focused guide, and brings you real-world case studies, tough questions and tangible ideas you can bring back to your organization.

Arn's BBQ is more than just a food trailer in Whitefish, Montana—it's a taste of true Central Texas barbecue in the heart of Big Sky Country. Founded by Arn and Leigha Mendez, the couple took their Houston roots and passion for low-and-slow smoked meats and built something special in northwest Montana. From the very beginning, Arn's goal was to keep it real: post oak wood imported from Texas, brisket smoked to perfection, house-made sausage, chicken, and ribs, all paired with scratch-made sides and that signature Texas hospitality. Even the details matter—the menu is tight, the quality is high, and nothing is served unless it meets Arn's standards.Family is at the heart of the business. Arn and Leigha's kids pitch in wherever needed—prepping sides, helping on service days, and being part of the welcoming atmosphere that locals and visitors have come to love. Though the trailer is only open a few days a week, lines form quickly, and the food sells out just as fast.In this episode we sit down with Arn to talk about the journey from Houston to Whitefish, the challenges of building a barbecue business in Montana, the culture of Central Texas barbecue, and the joy of creating a family-run spot that's earned a loyal following. This is a story of food, family, and community—and how one pitmaster brought a taste of Texas smoke to the Montana mountains.https://www.arnsbbq.com/Send us a textFirecracker Farm Small-batch Spicy Salt Family farm with a secret blend of Carolina Reaper, Ghost, and Trinidad Scorpion peppers.Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. What started as a passion for cooking over fire quickly turned into a full-blown mission for me. My journey into BBQ began the way many great stories do—backyard cooks for family and friends, experimenting with rubs, sauces, and different pits until I found the flavors that truly spoke to me. I wasn't just cooking food—I was creating an experience. Over time, the spark grew into something bigger. I built Blazin Jett BBQ in Kokomo, Indiana, as more than just a name—it's a reflection of my drive, my style, and my belief that great BBQ brings people together. Whether it's firing up the Weber kettle with the vortex, running the Traeger, or lighting up the Su-V gun for that perfect sear, I love pushing boundaries and showing people there's always a new level of flavor waiting to be unlocked. I've taken my brand from backyard cooks to competitions, social media, and collaborations with companies I respect. Along the way, I've been blessed to connect with other pitmasters, creators, and BBQ lovers who've inspired me to keep going. My Goals: • Continue to grow Blazin Jett BBQ into a respected name in competition and content creation. • Represent and collaborate with brands that share my same passion for quality, innovation, and community. • Build products—rubs, sauces, and gear—that deliver the same bold, authentic flavor I stand behind. • Inspire others to fire up their pits, try new things, and enjoy the journey as much as the results. For me, BBQ isn't just food—it's fire, family, and fuel for creating unforgettable moments. And I'm just getting star
