Teatime with Miss Liz joining me is Chantal Gilmour Creator of WarmUp Cornwall. February 23rd 10Am EST LIVE SHOWS AND MULTIPLE PODCASTS PLATFORMS AND APPS Chantal is also known as the Crazy Knitter. She started knitting as a hobby 24 years ago while on maternity leave with her second child. After a car accident rendered her bedridden she took up knitting to keep herself sane and a crazy knitter was born. Now she spends her days in Cornwall Ontario knitting for others. If she is not selling items at live events or online from her Etsy shop and website, She is driving (well the hubby is driving and she is knitting) around SD&G picking up handmade items made by her little army of crafters to deliver these items where they are needed. She is all about knitting. "If she sits she knits." In her spare time making Cornwall and the area is warm she takes many classes at Tri-County Literacy Council or her nose is in a book because she believes in continuously learning. After the car accident rendered her bedridden for 2 years her passion for knitting was born(before the accident it was just a hobby) She had gathered up a considerable pile of scarves and hats so she started selling them on Etsy. Once the piles grew more than she could sell this happened, She (with the help of her husband) started Warm Up Cornwall after a Christmas parade where they ran into a family with a mom about to leave because the children did not grab their winter gear and they gave them some new stuff they had just purchased(scarves and hats were always plentiful as she made them at the time) for their children so the kids would not miss out on parade. Once they got home she ran into a post on Facebook about some people "dressing" statues in Ottawa and thought she could do something like that here, and with some brainstorming the hubby and she started Warm Up Cornwall. She has been making scarves and hats plenty for sale at the time but then decided to purchase gloves to make sets and started leaving them around different areas in town. Then they expanded from that to drop off to the food bank and various other places. After 2 winters they were contacted by the Red Cross to take over a program that provided hats and mittens to the schools in all of the four school boards in SD&G and different nursing homes in the area received lapghans, shawls and other things. The pandemic slowed down the distribution of items at the schools but they have still been actively working with a small army of knitters to keep delivering the items at various places. https://www.facebook.com/WarmUpCornwall?mibextid=LQQJ4d https://www.alignable.com/cornwall-on/warm-up-cornwall https://twitter.com/charityknitter7?s=21... https://crazyknitters.myshopify.com/ https://instagram.com/warmupcornwall?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/misslizsteatimes/message
In E203, Haron Afzalzada discusses his Cornwall Ontario real estate investing strategy with a focus on a mid-sized multifamily building as a case study. Haron is using the cash for keys strategy to turn over units and push the value of his building toward refinance. Haron discussed in this episode how he and his family made sacrifices early in their investing journey so that they could make fast progress. Cornwall is an interesting town to discuss as an investors destination and is seemingly becoming more popular for investors seeking cash flow. Tune in for more details. This glass-shattering, cosmic genius of a woman allowed me the privilege of sitting down with her and discussing her role as the mayor of Cornwall (Ontario, Canada) and the future for this immensely innovative city. Spending time in Cornwall, meeting with business owners, historians and residents, I quickly became enamoured with this powerhouse of a city and wanted to sit down with their mayor to discuss its, well for a lack of a better word, amazingness. As you listen, you may quickly gather that Mme. Mayor Bernadette Clement is both inspirational and encouraging. Her limitless capacity to lead with compassion and empathy is refreshing and awe inspiring. Her humble yet strategic approach to progress the future of Cornwall is evident via her deliberate relationship building technique with pretty much anyone she meets. Whether it is breaking bread with the Grand Chief of Akwesasne, discussing mental health awareness with youth or working with council to include environmental sustainability in purchasing decisions and creating targets to lower the city’s carbon footprint, Mayor Bernadette actively participates within her community to create positive change for the future. She is exactly the type of person the world needs more of!

Adan is a fan of the podcast and reached out to me via one of many social media outlets, and she mentioned that she would love to be a guest on the show. I can never pass up the opportunity for a new guest so I went to her place and we hung out, had a beverage and just talked. Most of that conversation is here for you to inspect on this week's podcast. We talk about her work, what life in Cornwall Ontario is like, adopting a pet from overseas and her Serbian heritage. Does your community promote "Shop Local"? A "Shop Local" campaign is quite common in smaller communities. Especially those near large metropolitan areas. The purpose of these campaigns is to encourage people to support local businesses by shopping in their hometown. The city of Cornwall Ontario where I’m from is 1 hour from Ottawa Ontario, Canada’s capital, and 1 hour from Montreal Quebec, one of the largest cities in North America. With both of these metropolises so close, Cornwall is constantly encouraging its citizens to "Shop Local". Their marketing campaigns explain things like: The convenience shopping locally offers. Getting to know the people you deal with on a first name basis. Developing a sense of pride in supporting your community. Sure, these "Shop Local" campaigns are more geared towards retail stores, encouraging people to buy their groceries, clothing, and household items nearby. But these same principles are also adopted by many local businesses. It’s inevitable that as a designer, whether you do print design, web design or any other type of design, you will be approached by local people wanting to hire you because they want to shop locally. This creates a great opportunity for you if you live in a small community where you don’t have a lot of competition. You can become the go-to person for anything design related. However, there is a problem when a client takes the whole shop local thing a bit too far. That's when they want you to deal locally as well. That’s what I really wanted to talk about today. When "Shop Local" tethers your ability to do your job. I’m talking about clients that insist any help you get or any products you source are acquired locally. Maybe you offer print brokering as part of your business. In my business, I have a few local printers available to me. However, I get much better prices from printers that are not in my local area. The same goes for things like T-Shirts. Sure I can get them printed locally but at almost double the cost of my non-local supplier. So what can you do when your client insists you shop locally? You have two options. Use the local talent and charge your clients accordingly. Or, you can explain to your clients that they have nothing to worry about because by dealing with you, they are shopping locally. Just like a local caterer is not required to source their food locally, you shouldn't be required to source your products locally either. Where the people on your team are located or where you get your supplies from shouldn’t matter to your client. Simply by dealing with you, they are shopping locally and reinvesting in their community. After all, your business is part of their community. If you explain it to your clients this way and show them how you can possibly save them money along the way, you should be able to convince them that hiring your local business is in their best interest. Have you ever had issues with clients wanting you to shop locally? Let me know how it worked out for you by leaving a comment for this episode. Questions of the Week Submit your question to be featured in a future episode of the podcast by visiting the feedback page. This week’s question comes from Elly I've been having some problems with meeting new design clients in a neutral location. If we've only spoken on the phone or by email, they don't recognise me and walk right past! I often intercept clients speaking to other people in a café asking if they're me, and it's embarassing, let alone not creating a proffessional first impression to the client. I'm young and prehaps I don't look like the clients' idea of a graphic designer. How can I get clients to recognise me when I'm meeting them? To find out what I told Elly you’ll have to listen to the podcast. Resource of the week WhatTheFont Mobile App The new WhatTheFont Mobile App version 2.0 is a game changer in font identification. When I was 10 years old my family moved to Cornwall Ontario. It was a big adjustment for me moving to a city where I didn't know anyone. My dad knew I loved watching hockey and he wanted me make new friends as well as learn how to skate. So to kill two birds with one stone, he enrolled me in the local hockey association's house league. Read More...
