Black women have always been the most relentless instigators for change—building a democracy for all. In The Instigators: How Black Women Have Been Essential to American Democracy (And What We Can Learn from Them (Harper, 2026), Atima Omara draws on her political knowledge and expertise, as well as history, to examine how they have responded to failed strategic decisions by movement leaders and the modern Democratic Party in previous elections as a context for the present. She also provides actionable recommendations to organizers, donors, candidates, strategists, political party leaders, that everyday people can use in their communities to build an inclusive democracy that endures beyond one election cycle. The Instigators is at once an urgent political guide, historical exploration, and a poignant memoir that pulls from Omara's two decades of work in Democratic politics and the progressive movement as an elected Democratic Party leader, movement organizer, former candidate, gubernatorial aide, campaign staff to candidates at the national, state, and local level; and now political strategist. Powerful, insightful, and practical, it is imperative reading for everyone eager to protect and rebuild our democracy and create a better tomorrow for all. Hour 1: The Sixers are a threat but the Knicks are a better and more complete team. The Knicks can't let the Sixers drag them down into a bunch of nonsense when they try to be instigators again.
Randall is joined by Atima Omara, political consultant and author of the new book "The Instigators". They speak about the power of black women ages 18-45, which she considers "The Instigators", her political consultant journey, and Kamala Harris's 2024 campaign, as well as her chances in 2028. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
Chuck Todd opens with a sobering analysis of the post-Correspondents' Dinner shooting political climate, arguing that both sides are now busy blaming each other for violent rhetoric while past presidents from both parties always understood their job was to lower the temperature, not raise it. He argues that while Democratic rhetoric has gotten harsher in recent years, Trump is the one who fundamentally changed what was acceptable to say out loud — his January 6th pardons effectively created a permission slip for political violence, and the public barely batted an eye when he celebrated Robert Mueller's death — and warns it only takes one unstable person to take the wrong cue from this environment. He says American politics has become genuinely brutal and violent, that the "cold civil war" is warming up, and that two wrongs don't make a right: just because Trump started this race to the bottom doesn't mean everyone has to engage in it. He then pivots to the Iran war, where he says the U.S. and Iran are measuring the conflict in fundamentally different ways — for the regime, victory is simply surviving — and argues that Iranian control of the Strait of Hormuz has to be addressed before any nuclear threat. He closes with the proposed Florida redistricting map (which looks great for the GOP in a presidential year but terrible in a midterm), a new Texas poll showing Talarico leading both potential GOP nominees, and Susan Collins going negative on Graham Platner before the Maine primary. Atima Omara — Democratic political strategist, longtime activist, and author of the new book The Instigators — joins the Chuck Toddcast for a wide-ranging conversation about who actually decides American elections, why Democrats keep losing despite favorable demographics, and what a winning coalition looks like in 2028. Omara opens by dismantling the conventional wisdom that white moderate swing voters are the deciding force in elections, arguing that the 2024 contest was lost on mobilization rather than persuasion — Trump won at the margins, not in a landslide, and many blue states were won by surprisingly thin margins. She points out that Kamala Harris was behind before she even started because she had to succeed an unpopular Biden, but they credit Harris with saving three to four Senate seats that Biden would have lost outright. Omara walks through the political leverage Black women in Virginia exercised after the Ralph Northam blackface scandal — pushing for real legislative change rather than just symbolic accountability — and uses that as a case study in how activist coalitions can wield power smartly. The conversation turns to the structural challenges facing the Democratic coalition and what comes next. Omara makes the case that Republican advocacy is a constant, year-round operation while Democrats only mobilize during election years — a fundamental asymmetry that has allowed Republican messaging to dominate the cultural spaces and media ecosystem. She argues the left needs to get dramatically better at cultural messaging, that the activist class has helped Democrats make progress but has also made the party more rigid in ways that hurt it electorally, and that organizations like the Working Families Party are doing important work trying to push the Democratic Party from within. They both reflect on whether the two-party duopoly can survive — Americans clearly want the flexibility of a multiparty system but are stuck with this one. She offers a fascinating cultural analysis of why one-third of the electorate effectively grew up in a non-multiracial democracy, why events like the Tulsa massacre still aren't taught in most public schools, and why the South disproportionately sets the tone for American (and especially Republican) politics. They close by handicapping the 2028 Democratic field. Finally, he gives his ToddCast Top 5 list of Republican races that could signal trouble for Donald Trump and answers listeners’ questions in the “Ask Chuck” segment. What does it actually take to build a democracy that lasts—and who has always done that work? In this class session, Dr. David J. Johns sits down with award-winning political strategist, founder of Omara Strategy Group, and author Atima Omara to dig into her new book, The Instigators: How Black Women Have Been Essential to American Democracy (HarperCollins, May 5, 2026). From the Javits Center to the 107 days of the Harris campaign, from Shirley Chisholm to Sherry Beasley, Atima and Dr. Johns trace the through-line of Black women's political contributions and what keeps getting in the way of the credit, the resources, and the wins they deserve. They get into the “white voter” trap, what it actually means to follow Black women's lead, and why the most urgently sleeping-on lesson from history might just save us. Happy Independence Day! It's the Fourth of July in America! We actually recorded this episode back in October of 2024, but who's counting? Behold, this is the 11th Edition of Considering the Cinema's THE WEEKLY WATCHLIST! Here in Episode 084, your hosts — Jason Pyles, Mack Robins and Dave Becker — bring you movie reviews from the 1940s, 1960s, 1980s and 2024! For instance, Dave discusses an early Tom Hanks flick that you probably never even heard of! Mack talks about a lesser-lauded Chloe Grace-Moretz flick that utterly strains credulity but is entertaining nonetheless. And Jason discusses a Casey Affleck space movie! Join us! Note: This episode was recorded in October 2024, and it released on July 4, 2025! THE WEEKLY WATCHLIST is the type of episode where we simply talk about whatever we've been watching lately from our own, personal watchlists. Here's how it works: Jay, Mack and Dave have zero “movie-watching homework.” We are completely free each week to watch whatever we want from any era, year, genre, country, etc! We can finally go through our own personal watchlists and catch up with the films we've been meaning to see. So, every week will be vastly different. Let us know what you think of this format. Jay of the Dead also hosts a WEEKLY HORROR MOVIE PODCAST with Mister Watson at Horror Movie Weekly.com. And of course, every Horror fan should check out Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies, The Gold Standard of Horror Movie Podcasts. Unleashed: The Political News Hour with Chris Cordani – Rep. Barry Loudermilk's report exposes the truth behind January 6th, revealing how the Deep State manipulated events to suppress populism and maintain control. The National Guard's absence, media lies, and the J6 Committee served as tools to target Trump and his supporters. This power struggle highlights the fight against globalism and the elites' grip on power.
UNSTOPPABLE director Billy Goldenberg and editor Brett Reed have had a working relationship for over twenty years, going back to their time together on COYOTE UGLY (2000). Since that film, they've logged a lot of hours as "editor and assistant" or "editor and additional editor", but their new film brings about a whole new dynamic, "director and editor". UNSTOPPABLE is the inspiring true story of Anthony Robles (Jharrel Jerome) who was born with one leg but whose indomitable spirit and unbreakable resolve empowered him to defy the odds and pursue his dreams. With the unwavering love and support of his devoted mother Judy (Jennifer Lopez) and the encouragement of his coaches, Anthony fights through adversity to earn a spot on the Arizona State Wrestling team. But it will demand everything he has, physically and mentally, to achieve his ultimate quest to become an NCAA Champion. WILLIAM GOLDENBERG, ACE While UNSTOPPABLE is Billy's first shot at directing, he is one of the most well-respected and sought-after film editors working today. He won an Academy Award, BAFTA Award, and the American Cinema Editors' (ACE) Eddie Award for his outstanding work on the 2013 Best Picture winner, Argo, directed by Ben Affleck. His recent editing credits include Air, 22 July, Unbroken, and Concussion. Goldenberg received dual Oscar nominations in 2013, also being nominated, along with editor Dylan Tichenor, for his work on Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty. In 2015, Billy was again nominated for an Oscar, a BAFTA Award, and an Eddie Award for the historical thriller The Imitation Game, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley. He was previously Oscar-nominated for his editing work on Seabiscuit, and on Michael Mann's controversial film The Insider (with Paul Rubell and David Rosenbloom). Goldenberg was also part of the editing team on Mann's Heat, Ali, and Miami Vice BRETT M. REED Prior to cutting UNSTOPPABLE for Billy, Brett also collaborated with Artists Equity on Doug Liman's film THE INSTIGATORS, starring Matt Damon, Casey Affleck and Hong Chau. Additionally, he edited OLD, directed by M. Night Shyamalan for Universal Pictures, as well as several episodes of Shyamalan's television show THE SERVANT for Apple TV+. Previously Reed cut CLOUDS directed by Justin Baldoni for Disney+; Christoph Waltz' GEORGETOWN; Automatik's DREAMLAND directed by Miles Joris-Peyrafitte and starring Margot Robbie; and Nick Hamm's bio-thriller DRIVEN, starring Erin Moriarty and Lee Pace. Brett's earlier work with Billy Goldenberg included supporting him as an Additional Editor on TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE BEASTS, LIVE BY NIGHT, CONCUSSION, UNBROKEN and ARGO. Reed was also a First Assistant Editor on THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, ZERO DARK THIRTY, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES, NATIONAL TREASURE, amongst others. Directing and editing UNSTOPPABLE In our discussion with Billy and Brett, we talk about: Editors as first-time directors Cutting for a director who's an Oscar-winning editor Seeing double on the wrestling mat Obsessing and finessing an L-cut Making the most of a montage The Credits Visit Extreme Music for all your production audio needs Listen to Billy talk about cutting AIR and NEWS OF THE WORLD Check out the latest features in Avid Media Composer Subscribe to The Rough Cut podcast and never miss an episode Visit The Rough Cut on YouTube

Christophe Beck, an Emmy-winning film and television composer, has defined the sound of iconic productions such as FROZEN, THE HANGOVER franchise, THE MUPPETS and the cult classic series BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. Jason Drury had the pleasure of speaking with Christophe via Zoom at his Los Angeles home near the end of September 2024. During the conversation, they talked about his career to date, being tutored by the legendary Jerry Goldsmith, his work on BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, and composing for the MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE, including AGATHA ALL ALONG. But first, they discussed another of his recent scores, THE INSTIGATORS, which will be released on APPLE + in August 2024. Doug Liman directed the film, which stars Matt Damon and Casey Affleck as reluctant partners: a desperate father and an ex-con thrown together to steal a corrupt politician's ill-gotten gains. When the heist goes wrong, the two are caught up in a whirlwind of chaos. The pair talk Tom's dreams of being an Olympian/BMX champion, surfing together in Costa Rica, trying to make James Gandolfini laugh, and Robin Williams' beloved legacy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- See Matt Damon in “The Instigators”: “The Instigators” debuted in select theaters August 2, 2024 before its global premier on Apple TV+ August 9, 2024! In the film, Rory (Matt Damon) and Cobby (Casey Affleck) are reluctant partners: a desperate father and an ex-con thrown together to pull off a robbery of the ill-gained earnings of a corrupt politician. But when the heist goes wrong, the two find themselves engulfed in a whirlwind of chaos, pursued not only by police, but also backwards bureaucrats and vengeful crime bosses. Completely out of their depth, they convince Rory's therapist (Hong Chau) to join their riotous getaway through the city, where they must put aside their differences and work together to evade capture—or worse. Directed by Doug Liman and written by Chuck MacLean and Casey Affleck, “The Instigators” also stars Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, and Toby Jones, with Jack Harlow and Ron Perlman. 00:00 Intro 00:40 Midnight Run & ‘The Instigators' 04:19 Tom getting cut from ‘Air' 07:54 Matt can't remember what movies he's been in 10:35 Direct! 16:09 Matt Damon LOVES Derek Jeter 21:36 Tom Papa, average Olympian 24:40 Casey Affleck writing ‘The Instigators” 25:58 Car chase therapy & Bourne Identity 31:16 Instigators is pro-therapy 34:36 Jack Nicholson's advice 38:35 ‘Good Will Hunting' Robin Williams & Michael Stuhlbarg 43:31 Surfing in Costa Rica 45:36 You'll never run a marathon 47:02 Trying to make James Gandolfini laugh 48:15 Taste Test!
