It's said that because there was no law, pioneers who lived in and settled the west were bound by these unwritten rules which centered on hospitality, fair play, loyalty, honesty, a deep respect for the land, and a rock solid work ethic.Mitch wonders, does this still apply in todays' world? Code of the West1) Live each day with courage. 2) Take pride in your work. 3) Always finish what you start. 4) Do what has to be done. 5) Be tough, but fair. 6) When you make a promise, keep it. 7) Ride for the brand. 8) Talk less and say more. 9) Remember that some things aren't for sale. 10) Know where to draw the line.Comment, download, and catch up on all episodes at mitchwonders.comAll episodes are also at: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/2041434.rssMaybe drop ol' Mitch a wee morsel to support the merch store at Venmo.com? “I'm going to set a 10-year goal … to go from 70-years old to 80-years young.” Welcome everyone to episode 30 of the It Matters To Me Podcast, a show that celebrates the random through 1-on-1 conversations with people and the passions they pursue. Today my guest is Jim Owen, best-selling author, documentary filmmaker, and global speaker. Determined to get fit in his 70s, this 80-year-old former Wall Street executive wrote a book titled, Just Move! that focuses on the foundations of fitness and health beyond athletic performance or pure vanity. In hopes of inspiring others to realize the benefits of exercise, he began recording this journey through a recent documentary film, The Art of Aging Well. Before all this, however, Jim burst onto the national literary scene with the best-selling books, Cowboy Ethics, Cowboy Values, and The Try. That collection of truly must-reads highlights the character qualities that enable ordinary people to do extraordinary things and has unsurprisingly remained quite relevant in today's world of social discord, corporate scandals, and downright political jackassery. Talking with Jim couldn't have been more nourishing and substantial on a personal level because it really just felt like I was getting life advice from a seasoned expert. If you're a sucker for a southern drawl like I am, you're really going to enjoy this episode and I hope it's enough to get you to check out some of his books and the documentary. Ok that's enough from me, let's get to it, here's my talk with Jim Owen Additional Links The Art of Aging Well: https://theartofagingwell.com/ Just Move!: http://www.justmoveforlife.com/ Center For Cowboy Ethics and Leadership: http://cowboyethics.org/ It Matters To Me (Instagram): https://www.instagram.com/adamcasey/ It Matters To Me (Website): https://itmatterstomepodcast.com/ Jim's TEDx Talk: https://vimeo.com/64272975?embedded=true&source=vimeo_logo&owner=1556744 The Price We Pay by Dr. Marty Makary: https://www.martymd.com/
Phil shares his recent experience in Fort Worth, TX, at the Stock Show and Rodeo in this episode. Despite a winter storm bringing most everything to a standstill, the cowboys and cowgirls rode on. He attributes this mindset to the ranching lifestyle that allows for no days off and encourages us to live our lives similarly. So don't let fear, distrust, or humiliation stop you; carry on like the cowboys and cowgirls. There are some things that just don't go out of style, no matter how much time passes by. That is some of the core values taught by our ancestors that came before us who lived to tell the stories of their day. And we too, are building and creating our stories, the introductions of which often began unfolding early in our youth. At nearly 81 years young, returning guest, Jim Owen still has a lot of living, passion, purpose and stories to share! Determined to get fit in his 70's, the 80-year-old former Wall Street executive, best-selling author of Cowboy Ethics, and Just Move, documentary filmmaker, social entrepreneur, and global speaker, Jim Owen, inspires others through his fitness journey, positive and empowering thoughts about life and living and his recent documentary film, The Art of Aging Well. We unpack his best-selling and highly inspirational book, Cowboy Ethics: What It Takes to Win at Life, and how he came to explore the Code of The West. Jim will tell you he had a fascination with cowboys since his youth and they had forever been his heroes. But it was his ability to cherry pick their core values that truly is astonishing. And as he shares on this show, that isn't just my opinion. His Code of the West was declared as the “Official Code of the West” by the Governor of Wyoming…a high honor indeed! Speaking of honor, Jim's codes aren't just for cowboys and day's gone by. They embody the best of fundamental values, iconic traits for living a life rich with principled beliefs in a modern era. 10 tenets like Courage, Pride, Fairness and Promises, all of which he outlines on the show. The book itself is a work of art and each page wisdom infused stories to back up the reason for the code of ethic. But his resonating message is one of the fact that we all need heroes during this time, and his hope is that the Cowboy Way will inspire everyone to reach for the Hero Within. But he's much more than a cowboy enthusiast and admirer --though admittedly not a cowboy himself, and says quite openly he's even scared of horses. But what he is – is a BOLD life enthusiast and absolute Aging GreatFULLy Role Model! In his book shared on a previous episode, Just Move, he shares his journey from couch potato to fitness by simply making the choice to “move” and encourages everyone to simply do so. His latest project is another powerful one, a multi-segment documentary film, The Art of Aging Well and spotlights everyday super-agers the art of aging itself. Listeners are invited to view it on his website at www.justmoveforlife.com for free, where you can also learn more about all the fascinating and inspiring work he is doing, purchase his books and connect with him.An inspiring show from beginning to end you won't want to miss! I'll pretty much tell anyone who will listen that I'm in the best shape of my life at age 57 – and I feel the best is yet to come. And to be fair I never set the bar very high earlier in my life from a fitness perspective. And if you act even just a little bit interested – maybe you're just being polite – I'll tell you all about how I did it and what I've learned along the way - and you might in fact find it difficult to shut me up. I just can't help myself, I'm very passionate about healthy aging and I want to spread the message. And while it might be impressive to be in the best shape of your life in your fifties, what about someone in their sixties? Or maybe even in their seventies – now that would be remarkable! But what about an 80-year-old? Is it possible to be eighty and be in the best shape of your life?My guest today is James P Owen. After a successful 35 year Wall Street career, Jim found new purpose as an author, speaker and social entrepreneur. His book Cowboy Ethics has sold over 160,000 copies and is still going strong. But despite all of Jim's successes, he found himself at 70 years old in very poor health. He was close to 50 pounds overweight and suffered from crippling back pain. Today at age 80 Jim is in the best shape of his life and has become an evangelist for healthy aging. He is the author of the book Just Move: A New Approach to Fitness After 50, and the Producer of the docu-series titled The Art of Aging Well. In this episode we speak with James P. Owen about the benefits of exercising at ALL ages and why it's never too late to start. After a successful 35-year Wall Street career, James P. Owen found new purpose in being an author, inspirational speaker, and social entrepreneur. His book, Cowboy Ethics, a best-seller with more than 150,000 copies in circulation, and two follow-up volumes, Cowboy Values and The Try, put a spotlight on the importance of shared values and personal character in our society. Now Jim has expanded his focus, becoming a passionate evangelist for fitness as a way of life. In his speaking engagements, he reminds audiences that being in shape helps older adults stay mobile, active, and independent, enabling a quality of life no amount of money can buy. Fitness could also play an important role in combatting serious chronic diseases and controlling health care costs as our nation’s over-50 population balloons. Jim shares this message in his newest book, Just Move: A New Approach to Fitness After 50 (National Geographic, September 2017), a realistic fitness guide that puts the reader in charge as it inspires, empowers and informs without overwhelming, providing a flexible, step-by-step program readers can tailor to their own specific needs. The Wall Street Journal named Just Move! one of the top best books for healthy aging for 2017. Learning Points: 1. How do our thoughts about aging limit us? 2. Why is movement important as we age? 3. How do we start a new fitness plan? Website Address www.theartofagingwell.com
Dwight Moudy from Elkhart, IN spends everyday in schools educating kids about Cowboy Ethics. One of the great myths about the Cowboy Culture is what the true risk was trailing cattle in the huge cattle drive era. Who are you willing to cross a river with?
This discussion clearly revolves around the basic Cowboy Ethics that truly shaped our nation. Today Dwight Moudy and myself discuss how COVID-19 will or will not change the educational structure but also how great movies like The Cowboys provide great teaching opportunities.

Jim Owen spent 35 years working in Finance in the Investment world before he found his true calling... After writing the best selling book Cowboy Ethics, Jim spent the decade of his 60s traveling around the country giving over 100 speeches! On his 70th birthday, he looked at himself in the mirror and was disgusted with how out of shape he was. So, he decided to make a change. Standing at 78 years young, Jim does 1-hour of exercise a day, 6 days a week!
When Jim Owen was 70 years old, he saw himself as an old man for the first time. He was 25 pounds overweight. He suffered from chronic back issues, had two shot knees, and struggled with a frozen rotator cuff. He wasn’t happy, and he wasn’t comfortable - and when he walked into the gym, he couldn’t do a single push-up. Jim had spent the last 35 years in the investment world. He served as a partner in and sold three firms, wrote a number of successful books including The Prudent Investor and Cowboy Ethics, and delivered 35 talks a year as an in-demand speaker for a decade. His grueling schedule doing what he loved took a clear toll on his physical health - and in retirement he didn’t want to lose what was left of his mobility. Now, at 78, he’s in the best shape of his life. He weighs 50 pounds less than he did in high school - and can knock out three sets of 50 push-ups on command. His chronic pains have gone away, and he sees his best days as ahead of him. Today, Jim joins the podcast to talk about his new book, Just Move, the journey he took to turn his physical health around, why exercise is the foundation of the art of aging well, and his mission to help fellow Boomers get active and live their best lives. Fitness after fifty was never something that occurred to veteran financier James P. Owen, during his hectic life in corporate America. But when he turned seventy, the former Wall Street rainmaker and author of the best-selling book, Cowboy Ethics, had an epiphany. He discovered he could move. Jim founded the Center for Cowboy Ethics and Leadership to spread the message that “we can all be heroes in our own lives,” but it was not until relatively late in life that he says he discovered his true purpose. Over the past seven years he has transformed his life, applying his much-lauded ‘rules of the west’ to a disciplined fitness regime. The result is a body and lifestyle that defies his age and a new book, Just Move: A New Approach to Fitness After 50, in which Jim shares his wisdom. In this LLAMA podcast interview he explains how “fighting off old age” involves shadowboxing, weightlifting, walking and a focus on "functional fitness."
Before the American West was settled and barbed wire closed off the range, the Code of the West was the one civilizing influence that could be relied upon. In his 2004 book, Cowboy Ethics – What Wall Street Can Learn from the Code of the West, Jim Owen made a heartfelt case for a new approach to business ethics — one that goes back to simple, timeless principles like those of the cowboy code. He also translated the unwritten Code of the West into Ten Principles to Live By.

Earn Your Spurs: Exploring the Cowboy, Horses and All Things Western
When I ask my guests at the end of each episode what they think is the most important quality for any good cowboy to have, I get answers like, "integrity," "kindness," "honesty," and "grit." Never once have I heard, "the ability to rope two feet every time they throw their loop." Being a great cowboy is so much more than knowing how to ride a horse or rope a steer. Today's guest, Kent Noble, of The Center for Cowboy Ethics talks about how his organization is teaching people to live more like the cowboys of the silver screen and follow the Cowboy Code established by the organization's founder, Jim Owen.

Newsletter: Click Here Join Scott Cluthe on www.twitter.com Scott Cluthe's guest tonight is Jim Owen author of The TRY: Reclaiming the American Dream and creator of the Center for Cowboy Ethics and Leadership, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) foundation. Is there a secret to attaining real success and fulfillment in life? To Jim Owen, it’s all about having “The TRY”— that quality of giving 100% to whatever task or challenge is at hand. In standard English usage, 'try' is a verb that means 'to make an attempt.' But in cowboy culture, the word is a noun invested with profound meaning. When Cowboys say, 'That cow hand, he's got try,' the quality of giving something every ounce of effort you can muster. After a successful 35-year business career, Jim Owen reinvented himself as an author, film producer and social innovator. He also created the Center for Cowboy Ethics and Leadership, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) foundation, to help spread the message that “we can all be heroes in our own lives.” Jim’s book credits include Cowboy Ethics & Cowboy Values. Jim found his calling in 2003 when he was so dismayed by the country’s spreading epidemic of corporate scandals and social discord that he felt compelled to speak out, urging a return to the basic core values that all Americans can share. Inspired by his life-long interest in Western history and lore, Jim coined the phrase “Cowboy Ethics” and wrote his book distilling the unwritten Code of the West into “Ten Principles to Live By.”
