Ed Ashurst has cowboyed on the most iconic ranches in Arizona. His experiences working cattle in the mountains, deserts and along the Mexican border have inspired more than a dozen books, both fiction and nonfiction. He is also a working cowboy who has ridden and gathered cattle and horses on over seven thousand square miles of the American West, accumulating over fifty years of experience as a big ranch cowboy. He currently manages a large cattle ranch in southeastern Arizona. Seasons 7 || Episode 10 – The beef industry has been focused on measuring economically relevant traits for decades. However, some of these traits are harder to measure than others. One of these traits includes pasture-based forage intake on an individual animal basis. With feed costs being one of the highest inputs cattle producers have each year and forage being a limiting resource, the ability to measure this trait is more important than ever before. Cattle producers can now measure forage intake on a per-head basis in their pastures with the implementation of Ceres Tag devices. David Smith, Dr. Troy Rowan and Barbara Jackson share valuable insights about how Ceres Tag devices measure pasture feed intake and how it can be applied in real-world settings during Season 7, Episode 10 of the Casual Cattle Conversations podcast. In this episode, you will be able to: Understand How Technology Optimizes Cattle Management Maximize Profitability Through Forage Intake Management Unlock the Power of Genetic Selection for Efficient Grazing Discover the Importance of Measuring Forage Intake for Profitability Achieve Balance Between Traditional Practices and Modern Technology in Cattle Management My special guests are David Smith, Troy Rowan, and Barbara Jackson. Ep 355 - Is cattle ranching sustainable? Guest - Cherie Copithorne-Barnes We need protein – plain and simple, we need it. And we need protein from nutrient rich sources. Beef, chicken, pork are all nutrient rich and when cooked, these are the foods that propelled the development of the human brain. They remain important to our brain health and the replacement of protein in our bodies that is continuously breaking down. Alberta cattle rancher Cherie Copithorne-Barnes says, “Cows are an exceptional source of protein. They eat plant matter and bio-pack it into nutrient rich food for us.” Today, there are approximately 70 million cows in North America. That's down by close to 50 million cows from a peak in the 1970s. These are large grazing animals that we eat. 50 million cows is still a lot of animals eating a lot of grass and grains and barley. They take up a lot of space and they burp methane. “Yes,” says Copithorne-Barnes. “And they play a vital role in the health of marginal agricultural lands – land that you cannot grow anything else on,” to which Copithorne-Barnes points out, at over 1,300 metres above sea level in Alberta, no other agricultural product will grow and produce food humans can eat. The question then is, are cows bad for us? Bad for the environment? Or are they good for the environment and good for us? And that begs the question – is cattle ranching sustainable? Stuart McNish invited fourth generation rancher Cherie Copithorne-Barnes to join him for this episode of Conversations That Matter, Food for Thought to ask her about beef. Few people speak to family traditions, hard work, loyalty, and taking care of your community like John Scharbauer of Scharbauer Cattle Ranch and Midland Meat Company. I put the phrase "Riding for the Brand" in this episode title because that's exactly what John, his family, and his staff do each and every day. Their Number 5 brand is more than an identifier of ownership. The brand stands for the 138 years of hard work and effort poured into the Midland, Amarillo, and surrounding areas of Texas. It also stands for the progress being made with the Scharbauer Cattle Company's ranching efforts in terms of land management, genetics, and overall meat quality. Together with their retail shop, Midland Meat Company, and their new restaurant in Midland, the MMC Half Acre, the Scharbauers, and their loyal staff members continue to put God, Family, and Community front and center in all they do. In this episode, you'll get a fantastic history lesson on the Scharbauer family as well as a behind-the-scenes look at their storied cattle business. You'll also be treated to some bonafide American truisms and a few stories I guarantee will stay with you long after listening to my conversation with John. SHR # 2707:: Smart Dogs Eat Low Carb plus Cattle Ranching that is Better for the Planet - Smart Dogs Eat Low Carb - Guest: Patrick Wardell - The number 1 killer of labs and golden retrievers is cancer. Almost half of dogs over the age of 10 will develop cancer. Dogs get cancer at roughly the same rate as humans. Not surprising is it? Almost all commercially available dog foods are very high in carbohydrates. Many dogs develop diabetes today. The “frontier myth” — or the romanticized idea of a place at the edge of civilization full of opportunity for the strong and self-reliant — has been idealized in American history, literature, and art. The reality, however, is more complicated — and so are the three women we highlight in this episode, all of whom made their livelihoods as cattle ranchers: Katherine Fenton Nutter, known in her day as “Utah’s Cattle Queen,” who ran Nine Mile Ranch, one of the largest cattle ranches in Utah Josie Bassett, a rancher and renegade with a homestead in what is now Dinosaur National Monument Heidi Redd, a cattle rancher at “The Dugout” near Canyonlands National Park, who forged a partnership with The Nature Conservancy All three defied the gender stereotypes of their time, bending the rules and pushing boundaries to carve out a place for themselves on Utah’s frontier.
Welcome in ya'll! Today I have the absolute pleasure of speaking to Kacy! She is a cattle rancher in SE Wyoming and an advocate/speaker for the beef industry. Her familys ranch has been there since the 1880s, raising livestock. She is a badass woman in what has mostly been a male dominated industry. Kacy talks passionately about life on the ranch and how she believes we should all get on the same boat in this industry that has become fragmented. Her knowledge and passion extends to current cattle producers but she also relays accurate information about the beef industry to the general public and beef consumers. At the end of the day we all want the same thing, to raise our kids, live the way of life we love, live off the land and take care of our animals. To see what we have built for generations to come. Cattle Ranching is hard work and I don't pretend i know a thing, this California girl knows nothing about raising no cattle! Kacy sat down with me just after birthing a calf! She is real, with manure in her hair and she looked beautiful. We talk about how we should all come together at one table and move forward with one voice, make the system better if you think its not working. I love how passionate she is about the current and future state of cattle ranching. Kacy does speaking engagements for all types of audiences young and old, those who raise beef or just enjoy eating it. She is National award recipient for beef advocacy radio program. See her website www.kaceyatkinson.com to listen! Follow Kacy on Instagram for some cute baby calf photos and life on the ranch. If you want to know more about the beef industry, please reach out to her as well at her website! Thank you SOO much for listening and thank you Kacy for taking the time in between birthing calves to join me. I hope to get to Wyoming and get down and in the muck. Love you so much girl.
This episode talks about all the joys and the works of cattle ranching. I asked my friend Stephen for help with this episode because this is not really my field of expertise. I'd lastly like to dedicate this episode to a hard working man and father named Garry. May you rest in peace.

OverviewMary Heffernan and her husband were working full time in the big city, and like most city slickers, they were caught up in the hustle and bustle of every day life. With ownership of a few restaurants, they found local meat suppliers were not producing high quality meats. "Naively", Mary sought to solve this issue by farming the cattle herself. The family soon realized owning a cattle ranch was not a part time gig and made the leap to take on cattle ranching full-time. From adjusting to country living, to the daily challenges of farm life, listen in to hear how Mary built a side venture into a full fledged career. About Our GuestMarry Heffernan grew up in Menlo Park, California. With her eyes on a career in the medical field, Mary set up a tutoring school to help pay her way through college. From here, Mary realized pretty quickly that she enjoyed the challenges of starting a business. Mary stopped her pursuit of the medical field and began her journey into serial entrepreneurship, launching business after business where she saw needs in her community. By the time she had met her husband, Mary was on to building restaurants. Seeing a lack in the supply chain for high quality meats and with a family growing tired of the hustle and bustle of everyday city life, it wasn't long before Mary did what she does best and took on a new venture. Mary, her husband, and four kids made the leap and moved a few hours north to Fort Jones, California. Mary and her family currently own and operate Five Marys Farms, a cattle ranch focused on producing high quality meats. Through their ranch, they have established themselves as a stake hold in their community running a variety of programs that work help young entrepreneurs get into ranching and educate school children on the opportunity in their agricultural community. In this episode, Emily Cornell and Sarah Bangert discuss prescriptive grazing effects on rangeland. Emily is a cow-calf rancher with Sol Ranch and Cornell Ranch in Northeastern New Mexico. She markets grass fed beef and also manages an apprenticeship program for beginning ranchers. She talks about the importance of soil health, especially in an area with limited water, as well as impacts on processing and marketing due to COVID-19. About soil health, Emily says, ““Paying attention to soil health is the most important thing a rancher can do,” especially in such a brittle environment with limited water and low decomposition. Sarah runs a prescriptive grazing business with goats. She talks about her work with Emily and one other rancher on a SARE project studying the effects on the landscape with targeted grazing. Listen in as Emily and Sarah talk about the importance of thinking about how nature does things, and still produce a profit every year.Learn more at westernsare.org

Mary Heffernan and her husband, Brian, left behind the busy life they'd built in Silicon Valley to become cattle ranchers with their four young daughters—all named Mary. Together they own and operate Five Marys Farms, an 1,800-acre ranch in the mountains of Northern California where they live, work, and raise all-natural beef, pork, and lamb. Mary and Brian sell and ship directly from the farm to families all over the US. They share their meats with local customers and visitors from far and wide at their popular restaurant and bar, Five Marys Burgerhouse. Five Marys was awarded Best Farm in America by Paleo magazine and has been featured in Oprah magazine, Real Simple, Sunset, and other national publications. Mary has a fiercely loyal following on social media and hosts popular summer farm dinners and weekend retreats at the ranch. She and Brian believe in raising meat naturally and that great cooking starts with well-raised ingredients. Mary joins Kristen Hall, COO of Mother Honestly, to discuss the importance of sourcing great meat and how that shaped the creation of Five Marys Farms. Mary's entrepreneurial spirit is visible in all that she does with the launch of her cookbook Ranch Raised Cookbook, mentor at Small Business from Scratch, and the newly launching M5 Ranch School. Be sure to check out their fine quality meats, cookbook, ranch school and more at http://www.fivemarysfarms.com/ and follow @fivemarysfarms on IG. Among the most iconic landscapes in America is the Western Range, a stretch of millions of acres of land, much of it remote and undeveloped. Deep traditions tie people to this land. But in the 21st century, it is also contested ground. Development pressures threaten open space as the Sun Belt becomes an economic powerhouse. Border issues mean life in some of these rural places has been transformed by violence and politics. But new ways are being forged on these fronts, ways that involve collaboration, innovation, and the rediscovery and reimagining of history on the new Southwestern Range. VIEW PHOTOS AND MORE
