WIC is the US Department of Agriculture's Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, a program that is designed to offer nutritious foods and nutrition education to income-eligible pregnant, breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to the age of five.  In this episode, I had the opportunity to interview the National WIC Association's Senior Manager of Public Health, Darlena Birch, MBA, RDN who talks about the proposed changes underway regarding the package of food provided to WIC participants. Darlena focuses on explaining the recommendations to reduce the amount of jarred infant food and replace it with an increased amount of fresh fruits and vegetables which would be a great opportunity for participants to offer their babies a greater variety of foods.   Get your copy of the 100 FIRST FOODS list on Katie's free BABY-LED WEANING FOR BEGINNERS workshop: https://babyledweaning.co/workshop?utm_source=Shownotes&utm_medium=Podcast&utm_campaign=Episode%20Link   Follow @babyledweanteam on IG: https://www.instagram.com/babyledweanteam/   Show notes with all the links mentioned in this episode are here: https://blwpodcast.com/220   Learn something you liked in this episode? What Doesn't Kill You (Only Almost Kills You)

The 1980s are out for our blood and we wouldn't have it any other way. Join us as we sink our teeth into Joel Schumacher's teen vampire classic, "The Lost Boys". This movie has everything: homoerotic dream sequences, power ballads, orgasmic deaths, and The Two Coreys.   Music featured in this episode: "Cry Little Sister (Theme from The Lost Boys)" by Gerard McMann "Power Play" by Eddie & the Tide

What Doesn't Kill You (Only Almost Kills You)

By this point, everyone who wanted to see "Hereditary" in theatres should have seen it by now. HINT HINT. And now that you've seen it, join us for this episode in which we attempt to figure out what the eff happened in this creepy-ass movie. Which we liked! Also, sorry for the insane amount of street noise. Loud church music and Brooklyn traffic were in full bloom in our neighborhood.

What Doesn't Kill You (Only Almost Kills You)

"Grabbers" is a 2012 Irish horror-comedy about a small town that needs to stay drunk in order to fend off parasitic alien predators. It makes total sense in context, which is more than we can say for our lightweight disastrous recording session for this episode. Three words: DAD. MOTORCYCLE. GANG.

To make up for our longest absence yet, us gals at WDKY are coming back in full force with a special double feature episode. We watched one classic and one "classic", both of which are horror comedies that have developed cult followings, each for entirely different reasons. Saoli and Darlena are kicking off 2018 with John Landis's beloved 1981 film, "An American Werewolf in London". And also "Jack Frost". Welcome back to the coven!   Music: Delightful D Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

What Doesn't Kill You (Only Almost Kills You)

A tired Saoli barely holds it together whilst discussing "Child's Play", the 1988 cult classic that launched an ongoing franchise (as well as Darlena's fear of dolls). Also, Detective Mike + Single Mom Karen 4ever.

What Doesn't Kill You (Only Almost Kills You)

The "Leprechaun" movies have the unique distinction of somehow being offensive toward Irish people, black people, North Dakota, Tha Hood, pogo enthusiasts, and the wonders of space exploration, all within one B-horror movie series that, like its title character, just won't die. In this episode, Saoli and Darlena discuss the original 1993 film that launched both the series and the film career of a then-unknown actress named Jennifer Aniston. Seriously!

In this very special (and we're not even using that term loosely!) mini episode, Saoli and Darlena talk about "Seoul Station", the animated prequel to "Train to Busan". So ALL THE SPOILERS IMAGINABLE. You've been warned. Now, just to be clear, we definitely did enjoy most of "Seoul Station", and we're only hard on it because of one extremely glaring misstep... Oh, we also announce the next movie we're watching and kill a mosquito. Yeah, it was a long day.

What Doesn't Kill You (Only Almost Kills You)

This week, Saoli and Darlena discuss the thought-provoking 2016 South Korean zombie movie, "Train to Busan". They definitely DON'T discuss a certain long-running zombie TV show that has caused untold emotional distress for countless fans (but for US ESPECIALLY) and doesn't deserve to be included in our sacred podcast space. Let's just say it rhymes with "Sha Shmalking Shmead" and that we don't talk about it in our household. They know what they did.

What Doesn't Kill You (Only Almost Kills You)

Reunited and it feels so gooooood. Darlena is back from vacation and we're both back in Brooklyn for the first time in weeks! And just in time because, in this episode, we discuss Jordan Peele's thrilling directorial debut, "Get Out". This movie will MESS. YOU. UP. And so will the screaming child who makes an (unwelcome) appearance partway through our recording process... This is why we need proper microphones, people! Lastly, if you haven't done so already, please check out our Kickstarter campaign (http://kck.st/2tY1pdP), donate if you can, and spread the word! WDKY needs YOU.

What Doesn't Kill You (Only Almost Kills You)

And, we're back! After a slight delay due to Darlena being stranded in the forests of Utah (or whatever), we have finally been able to discuss 2013's "The Conjuring" and the complex gender politics that it so astutely explores. I'm just kidding. This was the mayonnaise of horror movies. Sorry not sorry to the LL Fool Js who actually enjoyed "The Conjuring". Also, the word we were thinking of was "analyze". I guess two BFAs don't make a right.

What Doesn't Kill You (Only Almost Kills You)

In this prequel/mini/preview episode (we're not sure what to call them yet), Darlena announces the movie we're watching next. This cult favorite has everything: great action, budding romance, and crotchal mutilation. Can't guess what it is? Listen to the episode to find out!

Welcome to What Doesn't Kill You (Only Almost Kills You), hosted by Saoli Nguyen and Darlena Chiem! We're just a couple of filmmakers with a love of horror movies. Well, Saoli loves horror movies. Darlena is a little weenie who has nightmares about them. However, a tendency we both share is our need to come up with escape plans for the scenarios that present themselves in the horror movies that Saoli makes Darlena watch. Whether it's a slasher flick or something more ~paranormal, we take it upon ourselves to figure out how to survive SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO. That's right, we're doing this for you. You're welcome, humans. Every two weeks, we'll release a new episode in which we analyze the particulars of a specific horror movie (it can be classic or contemporary) and come up with strategies on how we would defeat the cannibal family, killer clown, flesh-eating smog, etc., were we in the place of the film's protagonist. Other than that, there aren't many rules to this. Saoli suggested that we start with "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" mostly because we've never seen it before, but also as a little homage to the state where she spent many hellish, blazing hot summers as a child. Enjoy!
