Like most kids growing up in Ottawa during the late 80s, I was captivated by the mysteries of the skies. Whether it was watching The Christmas Martian that bizarre French Canadian film with an alien who looked like it raided a bargain bin for its costume or devouring every UFO book I could get my hands on, I was hooked. Those crisp winter nights, bundled against the cold and staring at the stars, turned my curiosity into a lifelong fascination with the unexplained. Now, as I watch reports of massive six-foot drones appearing nightly over New Jersey since late November 2024, those childhood mysteries feel more relevant than ever. The situation has evolved from curiosity to crisis. Through 2023 and 2024, a series of congressional hearings thrust UAPs once simply called UFOs into mainstream discourse. But why the name change? Is it a bid to rebrand the phenomenon, shedding its tabloid associations for a more scientific veneer? Or perhaps it's an attempt to obscure the familiarity of the term, sidestepping decades of public skepticism and intrigue. Whatever the reason, these recent drone sightings over New Jersey's Picatinny Arsenal and other sensitive sites have sparked unprecedented action. The FAA's implementation of temporary flight restrictions across 23 New Jersey cities until January 17th, followed by similar bans in 29 New York locations, shows how seriously officials are taking these incidents. We're not just telling stories around campfires anymore we're watching nations scramble to understand phenomena that challenge our fundamental assumptions about what's possible in our skies. How Nations Chase the Unknown Japan's 2020 Defense Ministry guidelines for UAP reporting marked a turning point. As Dr. Gallaudet's testimony confirms, their coordination with U.S. forces in the Pacific demonstrates how seriously they're taking these incidents. What started as scattered reports has evolved into formal protocols for tracking and investigating unexplained phenomena in some of the world's busiest airspace. France stands unique with GEIPAN, their space agency's dedicated UAP research unit. While other nations played catch-up, French researchers methodically built what's likely the most comprehensive public database of atmospheric anomalies. They're not hunting aliens they're documenting patterns and seeking natural explanations for the truly puzzling cases. Brazil's transparency offers a compelling model. Their Air Force's declassification of 1980s UFO files included the documented "Night of the UFOs" on May 19, 1986 a case where multiple aircraft over São Paulo encountered objects that disrupted air traffic. While questions remain unanswered, Brazil's willingness to release primary sources sets a standard other nations could follow. China and Russia view UAPs through the prism of technological and military rivalry. While both nations maintain official research programs, details remain classified, making international cooperation nearly impossible. Their approach reflects broader concerns about technological superiority and national security implications of these phenomena. Science Steps Up: Breaking New Ground October 2023 marked a watershed moment when NASA released its first public report on UAPs. The space agency's findings, while not confirming extraterrestrial origins, legitimized scientific study of these phenomena. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson's briefing emphasized the need for better data collection methods, acknowledging that current space and atmospheric monitoring systems might miss crucial details. The 16-member NASA panel, led by astrophysicist David Spergel, called for rigorous scientific methods in UAP research. Their recommendation for multi-sensor approaches combining optical, infrared, and radar data - could help distinguish between natural phenomena, human-made objects, and truly unexplained occurrences. NASA is launching a study of UFOs as part of a new push toward high-risk, high-impact science. The space agency announced that it's setting up an independent team to see how much information is publicly available on the matter and how much more is needed to understand the unexplained sightings. The experts will also consider how best to use all this information in the future. NASA's science mission chief, Thomas Zurbuchen acknowledged the traditional scientific community may see NASA as “kind of selling out” by venturing into the controversial topic, but he strongly disagrees. “We are not shying away from reputational risk,” Zurbuchen said during a National Academy of Sciences webcast. “Our strong belief is that the biggest challenge of these phenomena is that it's a data-poor field.” NASA considers this a first step in trying to explain mysterious sightings in the sky known as UAPs, or unidentified aerial phenomena. The study will begin this fall and last nine months, costing no more than $100,000. It will be entirely open, with no classified military data used. NASA said the team will be led by astrophysicist David Spergel, president of the Simons Foundation for advancing scientific research. In a news conference, Spergel said the only preconceived notion going into the study is that the UAPs will likely have multiple explanations. “We have to approach all these questions with a sense of humility," Spergel said. “I spent most of my career as a cosmologist. I can tell you we don't know what makes up 95% of the universe. So there are things we don't understand." This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Je m'appelle Clarisse Treilles, et aujourd'hui je vous parle de la mission de la NASA consacrée à l'étude des OVNI.  Ils planent, changent de direction à une vitesse vertigineuse, et pourtant ce ne sont ni des avions, ni des drones. Ce phénomène aérien est toujours un sujet de fascination. Rien que l'an dernier, 140 objets volants non identifiés ont été observés dans le ciel américain. Après le renseignement américain, c'est au tour de la NASA de s'attaquer à ce mystère, en recourant à l'analyse massive de données. L'agence spatiale américaine va mettre sur pied à l'automne une étude inédite sur les OVNI. Elle sera pilotée par l'astrophysicien David Spergel, ancien président du département d'astrophysique de l'Université de Princeton.  Dotée d'un budget de 100 000 dollars, l'étude aura pour objectif d'analyser pendant 9 mois toutes les données vidéo disponibles ainsi que les témoignages recueillis jusqu'à présent. La NASA mettra à profit sa capacité de croiser les données déjà existantes avec les connaissances scientifiques. L'étude se concentrera aussi sur la meilleure façon de collecter les données futures et la manière d'étudier comment la NASA peut utiliser ces données pour faire avancer la compréhension scientifique. Certains des plus grands scientifiques, experts en aéronautique et spécialistes des données américains vont participer à l'étude. A travers cette étude, la NASA espère examiner l'impact des OVNI sur la sécurité nationale et la sûreté aérienne A défaut de satisfaire les fans de science fiction, la NASA n'entend pas prouver l'existence des “petits hommes verts”. Reserve Bank of India, the country's central bank has proposed allowing integration between India's Unified Payments Interface and credit cards, TechCrunch reports. “UPI facilitates transactions by linking savings or current accounts through users' debit cards. It is now proposed to allow linking of credit cards on the UPI platform,” Shaktikanta Das, the governor of Reserve Bank of India said at a briefing, according to TechCrunch. To begin with, the RuPay credit cards will be linked to UPI, he said. RuPay is India's homegrown card network, which is promoted by the National Payments Corporation of India, a special body of RBI that also oversees UPI payments. Infosys has won a contract from TK Elevator that expands the Indian IT services giant's engagement with the German maker of lifts, the company said in a press release yesterday. The seven-year contract involves providing AI-powered IT helpdesk services, digital workplace management, and network services, using automation solutions from Infosys Cobalt, the company's suite of cloud technologies, products and services. NASA is putting together an independent team of researchers to study sightings of unidentified aerial phenomena, or UAPs, the updated term now used to refer to UFOs, the American space agency said in a blog post yesterday. NASA says it plans to study these sightings from a scientific perspective but also stressed that “there is no evidence UAPs are extraterrestrial in origin,” The Verge reports. The study team is to be led by astrophysicist David Spergel under NASA's Science Mission Directorate. It will attempt to identify what data is out there on UAPs and figure out how to best capture data on UAPs in the future. NASA noted that the limitations in sightings make it hard to come to logical conclusions about where UAPs come from. The study will be open and unclassified, according to Thomas Zurbuchen, the associate administrator for science at NASA, according to The Verge. SolarSquare, a Mumbai-based startup, has raised $4 million led by Google Capital, with participation from US investor Chris Sacca's Lowercarbon Capital, Singapore based Symphony Asia and Nithin Kamath's Rainmatter Foundation. The round also saw participation from Better Capital, Climate Angels and several angel investors. This investment mark's the $1 billion Lowercarbon Capital's first Indian investment, according to SolarSquare's press release. SolarSquare was founded in 2015 by Neeraj Jain and Nikhil Nahar, and Shreya Mishra joined them as co-founder. The company, originally started as a B2B solar venture, is rapidly expanding its B2C operations, and the fresh funds will help SolarSquare to go faster in that direction. A brief history of the universe and its possible death scenarios, WMAP, ACT, and WFIRST projects, inflation, dark energy, dark matter, and alternative theories, and artificial intelligence to aid cosmology and astrophysics. Prof. David Spergel is the director of the Center for Computational Astrophysics at Flatiron Institute and Emeritus Professor Princeton University. His research interests range from the search for planets around nearby stars to the shape of the universe. Using microwave background observations from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) and the Atacama Cosmology Telescope, he has measured the age, shape, and composition of the universe. He is currently co-chair of the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) science team. Dr. David Spergel is the Charles A. Young Professor of Astronomy, Professor of Astrophysical Sciences, and Chair of the Department of Astrophysical Sciences at Princeton University. He is also involved in the Princeton Center for Theoretical Science and the Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe in Tokyo. He completed his undergraduate studies at Princeton University and received his Master's degree and PhD in Astronomy from Harvard University. After two years as a long-term member at the Institute for Advanced Study, he joined the Princeton faculty in 1987. David has received a number of awards and honors during his career, including the Shaw Prize, being named a Science Citation Laureate, a MacArthur Fellowship, a Sloan Fellowship, the Presidential Young Investigator Award, and the Gruber Prize (awarded to the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe team). In addition, he is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences as well as the National Academy of Sciences. Time Magazine has listed Spergel in its 2001 issue as one of America's Top scientists and in its 2012 issue as one of the 25 most influential people in Space. David is here with us today to tell us all about his journey through life and science.
