Hello folks, welcome to the latest episode of the Ecosystem Member podcast, which might also be my new favorite episode. Our guest is Obi Kaufmann, a writer, a poet, an artist, a backpacker, ecological philosopher and student of all things California ecology. Many of you listening are probably familiar with Obi through his incredible Field Atlas series of California, combining his beautiful watercolors of the more than human world of California alongside equally beautiful data-driven words. In addition to the Field Atlases, Obi has written two thinner works - The State of Water and the newly released The State of Fire, which you should definitely check out if you haven't yet. In this conversation we explore what is natural and what is nature, the influence of E.O. Wilson's book ‘Consilience' on Obi's work in bridging different disciplines and of course, his Field Atlas series and new book The State of Fire. Many guests I've had on are guests that I have learned something from and I want to share that with you the listener. And we learn a lot from Obi in this episode for sure. What I think is unique about this episode and selfishly why I asked Obi to be a guest is that we explored new ground, in the moment. My take away from that exploration is a new understanding of how we think about nature. We've discussed before how we are as much a part of nature as white crowned sparrows and Point Reyes National Seashore. However, we still often get hung up on identities like environmentalist and we misuse words like preservation and conservation because we still haven't fully adopted this idea that we are nature. We donate and volunteer to protect these beautiful places and beautiful species for us, but when we truly bring on board an idea of conservation that includes us rather than being for us, we can shift our orientation because as Obi puts it - there is no daylight between the health of your ecosystem and your own health. It's not just physical or aesthetic, it is spiritual, it is mental. And I think once we figure this out, we can truly inhabit our membership in the ecosystems. “Consilience” is when different avenues of study land on the same spot. How did a long time financial professional end up concluding that resilient communities and homesteads were an important response the same as Chris? Tune in to find out…
Effective geoscience outreach and scientific collaboration are enhanced by our choice of words and communication tools. Our guests Sam Illingworth and Chris Jackson offer fresh perspectives based on their own experience and work. They focus on what we as individuals can do, from using poetry to solve scientific roadblocks, to ways in which we can better connect with audiences of all types – even those within our own work environments. Both challenge us to be more professional in our geoscience communication and work on measuring our impact.Sam Illingworth, an Associate Professor at Edinburgh Napier University discusses his work, specifically using poetry as a tool for dialogue and reimagining a problem. Sam views poetry as being able to provide a space for dialogue. It connects scientists and non-scientists, enabling the development of research and enabling knowledge dissemination. He encourages us to do a better job of measuring the value of our geoscience outreach projects. Sam produces a poetry podcast, is an editor of Consilience (science poetry journal) and the journal Geoscience Communication. Geoscience Communication journalConsilienceThe Poetry of Science PodcastGeologize Communication CourseOur second guest, Chris Jackson, is the Director of Sustainable Geosciences at Jacobs and Visiting Professor of Basin Analysis at Imperial College in London. He brings all our themes together and emphasizes how important it is for geoscientists to be effective communicators. His participation in shows like ‘Expedition Volcano' on the BBC has allowed him to bring geoscience to a broader audience and engage them in a different, more accessible manner. Whoever is the audience, whether it be colleagues or school children, the key to success is making them feel smarter by the end of your presentation. This results also results in a more engaged and interested audience. The key questions are - How can we simplify without losing accuracy? What are the benefits and challenges in diversifying voices? Everyone can embrace geoscience communication at whatever level works for them. TedX – Chris Jackson Diversity UK EventRI Lecture

What is life at the edges of ecosystems, at the moments of convergence? In this week's episode, guest Obi Kaufmann introduces listeners to his understanding of consilience – emphasizing the importance of art and science in sacred relationship. Obi shares in a reverie about what California has been and could be, and in doing so, he invites guests to imagine a world where we recognize nature as the undeniable truth of who we are. Obi brings rooted knowledge and esoteric inquiry to this conversation. His nuanced understandings of conservation, rewilding, and relating to the natural world, pull us into a framework for seeing a world of deep, beautiful relationality, even amidst pain and loss. Obi Kaufmann is an award-winning author of many best-selling books on California's ecology, biodiversity, and geography. Obi's signature style is as artful as it is analytic, combining masterful renderings of wildlife, hand-painted maps, and data-driven storytelling to present a hopeful and integrated vision of California's future. An avid conservationist, Obi Kaufmann regularly travels around the state, presenting his work and vision of ecological restoration and preservation from the Klamath-Siskiyou Wildland Center to the Mojave Desert Land Trust. Most recently, Obi was the artist-in-residence for the National Park Service at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. You can catch him every month in conversation with author and tribal chairman Greg Sarris in their podcast called Place and Purpose. A lifelong resident of California, Obi Kaufmann makes his home base in Oakland and is currently working on Field Atlases to come.Music by Memotone, Magnetic Vines, and Daniela Lanaia. In this UTOKing with Gregg, John Vervaeke returns to the program, and they share the developments in their work. John's major effort has been focused on developing the After Socrates series, which Gregg has been following. Gregg shares the beauty he has seen in watching the series, and how he found the way John framed After Socrates to be illuminating and inspiring. In addition, Gregg explains why he found the connection between the “dialectic into dialogos” and participatory knowing that John highlights to be profound. Gregg's major achievement has been the release of his book, A New Synthesis for Solving the Problem of Psychology: Addressing the Enlightenment Gap. John shares why he found the book to be so inspiring and important. Specifically, he shared how it lays out a plausible, intelligible account for understanding the mental across virtually all domains, and thus achieves what he calls a “synoptic integrative” view of psychology. He reiterates what he said in his review of the book, which is that he sees Gregg as a kind of modern day Aristotle who is generating a taxonomy and metatheory that can revolutionize psychology. In addition, two upcoming events. First, they discussed the upcoming conference that Gregg is organizing and for which John will give a keynote address. Called Consilience: Unifying knowledge and Orienting Toward a Wisdom Commons, it will be held March 17-18th from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Eastern. It will consist of over 45 presentations, and will be free to the public. Finally, they discussed the plans for the next cognitive science show series, Transcendent Naturalism, where they will work to show how their joint visions can provide a naturalistic framework for orienting toward the transcendent and thus provide the groundwork a new “religio” for the 21st Century. - - - ℹ️ Find out more about John Vervaeke ℹ️ - - - John's YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpqDUjTsof-kTNpnyWper_Q John's Facebook is here: https://www.facebook.com/VervaekeJohn - - - ℹ️ Find out more about Gregg Henriques ℹ️ - - - Psychology Today: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/contributors/gregg-henriques-phd Medium: https://gregghenriques.medium.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/henriqgx - - -
Consilience is one of my favorite ideas. It is the notion that when evidence from different, unrelated sources converge on the same conclusion, this convergence provides strong conclusions, and, ultimately, foundational revelations into the underlying fabric of reality. Ideally, conclusions from geology should confirm those found in chemistry, for example. So what happens when findings from psychology converge with those in spirituality? It is my belief that this convergence can point us towards foundational truths about reality, relationship happiness, connection and purpose. And this is exactly what I found in this scintillating and stimulating conversation with Bee and Azrya Bequer who focus on spiritual truths by leading ceremonial medicinal healing journeys in Mexico. Join me for a life-changing convo with these two exceptional individuals. Topics Covered:What is meant by “who you were designed to be”? What does it mean to be “unfuckwithable”? How has sex been medicine for you on your journey of BEQOMING? What importance have psychedelics played in your journey? What role do you see them playing in the healing journey of others? What are ways people can set themselves up for excellence whether they trust themselves or not? How does one learn to trust oneself more? You believe the universe is benevolent. How does that belief change the way one looks at life? Math and music share their mystery and magic. Three notes, played together, make a chord whose properties could not be predicted from those of the separate notes. In the West, music theory and mathematics have common origins and a rich history of shaping and informing one another's field of inquiry. And, curiously, Western composition has evolved over several hundred years in much the same way economies and agents in long-running simulations have: becoming measurably more complex; encoding more and more environmental structure. (But then, sometimes collapses happen, and everything gets simpler.) Music theorists, like the alchemists that came before them, are engaged in a centuries-long project of deciphering the invisible geometry of these relationships. What is the hidden grammar that connects The Beatles to Johann Sebastian Bach — and how similar is it to the hidden order disclosed by complex systems science? In other words, what makes for “good” music, and what does it have to do with the coherence of the natural world?Welcome to COMPLEXITY, the official podcast of the Santa Fe Institute. I'm your host, Michael Garfield, and every other week we'll bring you with us for far-ranging conversations with our worldwide network of rigorous researchers developing new frameworks to explain the deepest mysteries of the universe. This week on the show, we speak with mathematician and composer Dmitri Tymozcko at Princeton University, whose work provides a new rigor to the study of the Western canon and illuminates “the shape of music” — a hyperspatial object from which all works of baroque, classical, romantic, modern, jazz, and pop are all low-dimensional projections. In the first conversation for this podcast with MIDI keyboard accompaniment, we follow upon Gottfried Leibniz's assertion that music is “the unconscious exercise of our mathematical powers.” We explore how melodies and harmonies move through mathematical space in ways quite like the metamorphoses of living systems as they traverse evolutionary fitness landscapes. We examine the application of information theory to chord categorization and functional harmony. And we ask about the nature of randomness, the roles of parsimony and consilience in both art and life.If you value our research and communication efforts, please subscribe, rate and review us at Apple Podcasts, and consider making a donation — or finding other ways to engage with us — at santafe.edu/engage. In this episode, we talk about human nature, individual differences, knowledge, and consilience. We discuss what human nature is, how to account for individual differences in human behavior, and personality. We ask if humans are an aggressive or peaceful species. We discuss the costs and benefits of knowledge and ignorance. We talk about what we can learn about human nature by studying art and literature. Finally, we discuss if knowledge is unitary, the concept of consilience, and how we can reach it. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: KARIN LIETZCKE, ANN BLANCHETTE, PER HELGE LARSEN, LAU GUERREIRO, JERRY MULLER, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BERNARDO SEIXAS, HERBERT GINTIS, RUTGER VOS, RICARDO VLADIMIRO, CRAIG HEALY, OLAF ALEX, PHILIP KURIAN, JONATHAN VISSER, JAKOB KLINKBY, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, JOHN CONNORS, PAULINA BARREN, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, DAN DEMETRIOU, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ARTHUR KOH, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, SUSAN PINKER, PABLO SANTURBANO, SIMON COLUMBUS, PHIL KAVANAGH, JORGE ESPINHA, CORY CLARK, MARK BLYTH, ROBERTO INGUANZO, MIKKEL STORMYR, ERIC NEURMANN, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, BERNARD HUGUENEY, ALEXANDER DANNBAUER, FERGAL CUSSEN, YEVHEN BODRENKO, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, DON ROSS, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, OZLEM BULUT, NATHAN NGUYEN, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, J.W., JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, IDAN SOLON, ROMAIN ROCH, DMITRY GRIGORYEV, TOM ROTH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, ADANER USMANI, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, AL ORTIZ, NELLEKE BAK, KATHRINE AND PATRICK TOBIN, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, NICK GOLDEN, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS P. Why does science fiction not get the respect it deserves...from literary fiction? It's the East coast vs West cost gangster rap rivalry but fiction writers (except without the drive-by shootings…that I know of?) An ancient feud between the Realists and the Fantasists. But beneath the surface of the LitFic vs SciFi argument is a more serious issue, about the power of storytelling, and the duty of storytellers. We've got an epic conversation with one of the most sophisticated thinkers on the planet today, the social philosopher Daniel Schmachtenberger. Berry spoke with Daniel for our systems change issue of the magazine, a special edition for this crucial moment in history, which comes out March 24. Daniel is co-founder of Civilization Emerging and The Consilience project, and has a particular focus in his work on existential threats to humanity, and the importance of collective sensemaking. He's able to illustrate the three-dimensional, and intersectional realities of the problems we find ourselves in right now – from war to climate change to social upheavel - and suggest that we have not reached the limits of our cognitive capacity to solve for them. He is inspiring many, including us, to look clearly at this moment before it's too late. Because this was a humdinger of a chat, which will require you to pause, process and rewind in many parts, we've split the conversation into two episodes - the second to be released soon.
The Omicron variant of COVID-19 is raging around the world. How does it differ from the original virus and the Delta strain? Will Omicron mark the last big wave of the virus? And how do the three different kinds of vaccines work relative to the way the human body develops immunity on its own? Ray Blanco is the science advisor to Consilience. He shares his investment research in Technology Profits Confidential and Ray Blanco's Catalyst Trader, where he breaks down the science behind potential investments in technology and biotechnology companies. Ray covers a wide range of tech and biotech sectors, including semiconductors, software, cloud computing, cancer therapies and anti-aging science. On this episode of The Wiggin Sessions, Ray joins me to share his experience of quarantine in the Philippines and explain how the Omicron variant of COVID-19 differs from previous strains. Ray describes the differences among mRNA, adenovirus and traditional vaccines as well as the risks associated with each, exploring how the administration's narrative around COVID has changed and why the CDC and FDA can't admit they were wrong about the pandemic. Listen in for insight on the benefits of the emerging Novavax vaccine and find out why Ray is bullish on investing in biotech companies right now. This is an episode that is not to be missed. Tom Beakbane and Paul Krauss MA LPC discuss his new book How to Understand Everything: Consilience: A New Way to See the World. Tom and Paul discuss many topics including the hard science of how the body and mind interact, tribalism, culture, human behavior, communication and much more. Tom's journey to resurrect the concept of consilience began when he tried to understand why textbook explanations of human behavior did not account for the techniques routinely used by marketing communications and political operatives. Also he observed that textbook psychology did not explain the interpersonal dynamics he observed while providing services to his company's clients. He realized that by weaving together developments on the front lines of biology, physics and computing and re-conceptualizing human behavior as an emergent system it was possible to explain the nature of understanding in ways that are all-embracing. Tom Beakbane is president of a brand marketing company in Toronto, Canada. With an honors degree in biochemistry and neurophysiology from Durham University in England, he was puzzled by the gap between textbook theories of human behavior and his experiences creating business communications. He closed the gap by tapping into developments at the frontiers of science, explained in the just-published book How to Understand Everything. Consilience: A New Way to See the World. Podcast: Sped up Rationally SpeakingEpisode: Rationally Speaking #63 - Consilience: The Unity of KnowledgePub date: 2020-12-14Will all knowledge eventually be united? And what does that even mean, anyway? In this episode of Rationally Speaking, Massimo and Julia explore the topic of consilience, or the "unity of knowledge," a concept popularized by biologist and theorizer E. O. Wilson. Along the way they discuss whether all phenomena can be explained in terms of physics, the importance of precise language, and the seductive dangers of the "deepity." They have studied a diverse set of systems that includes the French Revolution, the courtrooms of Victorian London, the research strategies of Charles Darwin, the insurgency of modern-day Afghanistan, the emergent bureaucracy of Wikipedia, the creation of power hierarchies among the social animals, and the collusions and conspiracies of petrol stations in the American Midwest. Podcast: EXTRAordinary Podcast (LS 35 · TOP 3% what is this?)Episode: Consilience with Jeremy GilbertsonPub date: 2019-05-17Consilience is the theme for my guest today. consilience is the idea that evidence from independent, unrelated sources can "converge" on strong conclusions. In other words, arriving at the same results through various fields of study. And that seems to be exactly how Jeremy is living his life and running his businesses. Jeremy Gilbertson is headed down a path few understand or appreciate. While Music is his passion and ultimately the primary focus, the path through that medium and life in general is both multi-disciplined and multifaceted. Watching him trail-blaze this path has been so inspirational. His openness to new experiences and preparation for opportunity has led Jeremy to be involved in a lot of unique projects. Whether conducting a song writing workshop for vets at Camp Southern Ground, or orchestrating the film score for a civil rights short, Jeremy seemingly does it all. But he still maintains a work/life balance thanks in large part to his amazing wife Traci, who , as he will tell you, makes it all possible. Please enjoy my conversation with Jeremy Gilbertson. The podcast and artwork embedded on this page are from Nate G., which is the property of its owner and not affiliated with or endorsed by Listen Notes, Inc.
Podcast: Koap BitesizedEpisode: An Interview with the Author Tom Beakbane about his new book "How to Understand Everything. Consilience: A new Way to See the World"Pub date: 2021-04-19This is a first for me, having a recorded conversation with somebody I have just met. I will say however Tom's book is incredibly interesting and challenging in many ways. He takes an alternative look at everything we think is right in the world and challenges some of the traditional ways we think about ourselves and others. It is a challenging read that will make you think but is not that the point. When I first had the call with Tom, I had only managed to get two thirds of the way through the book, and so I am not sure I have done him the justice he deserves, especially now I have completed It. So, I am hoping that I can persuade him to come back for a second conversation. For now if you wish to contact Tom directly please see the links below.Order the book on Amazon: https://mybook.to/Understand_Everything How to Understand Everything website. https://howtounderstandeverything.beakbane.com/ What is Consilience? https://youtu.be/p4DeBJEmGiw LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/beakbane-publishing/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HowToUnderstandEverything Twitter: @TomBeakbaneClubhouse discussions WTF Consilience? https://www.joinclubhouse.com/club/wtf-is-consilience The podcast and artwork embedded on this page are from Steve Gore, which is the property of its owner and not affiliated with or endorsed by Listen Notes, Inc.

This episode is a fascinating insight into an incredibly deep but practical thinker. Tom Beakbane is president of Beakbane: Brand Strategies and Communications, a company that has delivered over 20,000 projects to Fortune 500 customers since 1986.He resurrected the concept of consilience after attempting to account for the gap between textbook theories of human behavior and his experiences creating marketing communications. He closed the gap by tapping into his passion for understanding developments at the frontiers of science.Prepare for your view of the world to be challenged.
