**THIS EPISODE CONTAINS FULL SPOILERS** Well, summer might be over, but on the Film is Lit podcast, Shark Movie Season lasts ALL YEAR 'ROUND, BABY! On today's episode, we discuss one of the dumbest books we've ever read, the Jaws ripoff novel "Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror" by Steve Alten. This book spawned the equally-dumb and infinitely boring 2018 action blockbuster, "The Meg," starring Jason Statham. In our deep dive conversation, we discuss why "Jaws" works and this doesn't, the film's retroactive connection to the Titan submersible, and how Jason Statham could get nominated for an Oscar if he only applied himself. So strap in and lookout for fins in the water, because if you're not careful, you could end up as FISH FOOD! #TheMeg #JasonStatham #CarcharodonMegalodon #RubyRose #SteveAlten #LiBingbing #JonTurteltaub #MegBook #Jaws #RainnWilson #PageKennedy #MasiOka #CliffCurtis #SharkMovie #SharkBook #SharkWeek #FilmisLit #FilmisLitPodcast #FilmiLitPod #movieadaptation #moviereviewpodcast #bookreviewpodcast #bookworm #cinephile #LauraSielingGaylord #DannyGaylord #Meg2TheTrench #LockStockandTwoSmokingBarrels

Based on the 1997 novel, “Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror” by Steve Altan, this film was directed by Jon Turtletaub and stars Jason Statham, Cliff Curtis, Li Bingbing, Page Kennedy, Ruby Rose, Rainn Wilson & Winston Chao. After a deep water expedition of the Mariana Trench goes very wrong, a group of scientists are horrified to learn that a 75 foot “Megalodon” shark has escaped the trench and is headed for populated waters in the Pacific Ocean. The film rights were originally bought by Disney shorty after the novel was published but after years of development hell, the rights were then acquired by Warner Bros. and plans for a feature film were announced in 2013.

You can always start your day right with action especially with Jason Statham and now in Meg2: The Trench Jing Wu and Shuya Sophia Cai.This sequel follows Meg, the 2018 blockbuster, shark - no I mean Megalodon, the Giant Prehistoric Shark, that has recorded to be as long as 60 feet. However, the movie was 80 feet and there were multiple. The movie was so good, Mr. Fonseca aka the KID, watched it twice because he had to have his older brothers, Mateo and Andre check it out. The movie is theoried to inspire future palaeontologists and we need it because the ocean floor is the most unexplored area in the world. The movie is adapted from the bestselling novel "Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror" by Steve Alten. But this movie set in the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific Ocean may have a lot of scientific inaccuracies - the megalodon are known to be extinct, but exploring the unknown as a diver or a future scientist may inspire another generation to explore the ocean floor. Trivia fact: Why the big hype about Pippin the dog? While the Meg wants RIP Pippin, this movie keeps coming back and was first scene in the original Jaws but as Pipit, the black labrador retriever, the true star of Jaws. Positive review to make sure to go to this movie especially if Barbie is sold out, again!

This week marks the first week of our MayGay Shark month here on Slashers Podcast! Today we kick off this month with our dear friend Micah from Damn That's Scary podcast to discuss 2018's The Meg. If you all recall, or were like Ade and Micah thinking this movie came out like a year ago, this 2018 film centers around a giant Megalodon shark and the people it picks off. It was directed by Jon Turtletaub, who you may know directed classics like National Treasure, Cool Runnings, and 3 Ninjas. The film is loosely based on the novel Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror, written by Steve Alten. It stars Jason Statham, Li Bingbing, Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose, Winston Chao and Cliff Curtis. There is currently a sequel in development and should be released by August of next year, but until then, listen in to all of the juicy details of this week's episode, and feel free to chime in if there are any other shark horror flicks you'd like us to cover. STEVE ALTEN - Grim Reaper - Steve Alten grew up in Philadelphia, earning his Bachelors degree in Physical Education at Penn State University, a Masters Degree in Sports Medicine from the University of Delaware, and a Doctorate of Education at Temple University. Struggling to support his family of five, he decided to pen a novel he had been thinking about for years. Working late nights and on weekends, he eventually finished MEG; A Novel of Deep Terror. Steve sold his car to pay for editing fees. On September (Friday) the 13th, 1996, Steve lost his general manager's job at a wholesale meat plant. Four days later his agent had a two-book, seven figure deal with Bantam Doubleday. MEG would go on to become the book of the 1996 Frankfurt book fair, where it eventually sold to more than a twenty countries. MEG hit every major best-seller list, including #19 on the New York Times list (#7 audio), and became a popular radio series in Japan. Steve's second release, The TRENCH (Meg sequel) was published by Kensington/Pinnacle in 1999 where it also hit best-seller status. His next novel, DOMAIN and its sequel, RESURRECTION were published by St. Martin's Press/Tor Books and were runaway best-sellers in Spain, Mexico, Germany, and Italy, with the rights selling to more than a dozen countries. Steve's fourth novel, GOLIATH, received rave reviews and was a big hit in Germany. It is being considered for a TV series. MEG: Primal Waters was published in the summer of 2004. A year later his seventh novel, The LOCH, hit stores -- a modern-day thriller about the Loch Ness Monster. Steve's eighth novel, The SHELL GAME, is about the end of oil and the next 9/11 event. The book was another NY Times best-seller, but the stress of penning this real-life story affected Steve's health, and three months after he finished the manuscript he was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. Steve's ninth novel, MEG: Hell's Aquarium, is considered to be the best of the best-selling MEG series. Steve says his best novel is GRIM REAPER: End of Days. The story, a modern-day Dante's Inferno, takes place in New York when a man-made plague strikes Manhattan. Steve's novels are action-packed and very visual. He has optioned DOMAIN, MEG and The LOCH to film producers. Steve has written six original screenplays. His comedy, HARLEM SHUFFLE was a semi-finalist in the LA screenwriting contest, his comedy MINTZ MEATS was selected as a finalist at the Philadelphia film festival as was his psychological thriller, STRANGLEHOLD. Steve's reality series, HOUSE OF BABEL won at Scriptapalooza. He has also created a TV Drama, PAPA JOHN, based on his years coaching basketball with Hall of Fame coach John Chaney. Over the years, Steve has been inundated with e-mail from teens who hated reading ...until they read his novels. When he learned high school teachers were actually using his books in the classroom (MEG had been rated #1 book for reluctant readers) Steve launched Adopt-An-Author, a nationwide non-profit program designed to encourage students to read. Teachers who register for the program (it's free) receive giant shark posters, free curriculum materials, student-author correspondence, an interactive website, and classroom conference calls/visits with the author. To date, over 10,000 teachers have registered, and the success rate in getting teens to read has been unprecedented. Steve now spends half his work week working with high schools. For more information click on www.AdoptAnAuthor.comAs an author, Steve has two goals. First, to continue to work hard to become a better storyteller and create exciting page turning thrillers. The Best of The 'X' Zone Radio/TV Show with Rob McConnell

Steve Alten grew up in Philadelphia, earning his Bachelors degree in Physical Education at Penn State University, a Masters Degree in Sports Medicine from the University of Delaware, and a Doctorate of Education at Temple University. About his book: Seven years ago, and seven miles below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, Dr. Jonas Taylor encountered something that changed the course of his life. Once a Navy deep-sea submersible pilot, now a marine paleontologist, Taylor is convinced that a remnant population of Carcharodon megalodon—prehistoric sharks growing up to 70 feet long, that subsisted on whales—lurks at the bottom of the Mariana Trench. When offered the opportunity to return to those crushing depths in search of the Megs, Taylor leaps at the chance… but the quest for scientific knowledge (and personal vindication) becomes a desperate fight for survival, when the most vicious predator that the earth has ever known is freed to once-again hunt the surface. Watery but not quite grave, it's Steve Alten's Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror that we're sinking our rows of nine-inch teeth into this time around. Giant prehistoric sharks known as megalodons butt themselves into ships throughout, making them, we guess, megs of ram, and oh boy do our heroes have a hard drive escaping these mighty predators. It's a classic monster story, with all the trimmings: sad hero, back-stabbing friends—and enemies!—things going wrong one after the other, and terrible threats gaining a taste for the best blood of all, human blood! In the finest tradition, it includes the phrase "gouts of gore" and more jawsplaining than anyone could have expected. Grab your spyglass and prepare to shout "Hark! It's a shark!" This shark week, it's time ... for the brine.   Recommendations: Mucca Pazza Trouble Every Day Raw How we found out about the book: this Deadspin article Music: "Baseball" by Michael Franks "Moby Dick" by Led Zeppelin "My Name is Jonas" by Weezer
