**THIS EPISODE CONTAINS FULL SPOILERS** Well, summer might be over, but on the Film is Lit podcast, Shark Movie Season lasts ALL YEAR 'ROUND, BABY! On today's episode, we discuss one of the dumbest books we've ever read, the Jaws ripoff novel "Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror" by Steve Alten. This book spawned the equally-dumb and infinitely boring 2018 action blockbuster, "The Meg," starring Jason Statham. In our deep dive conversation, we discuss why "Jaws" works and this doesn't, the film's retroactive connection to the Titan submersible, and how Jason Statham could get nominated for an Oscar if he only applied himself. So strap in and lookout for fins in the water, because if you're not careful, you could end up as FISH FOOD! #TheMeg #JasonStatham #CarcharodonMegalodon #RubyRose #SteveAlten #LiBingbing #JonTurteltaub #MegBook #Jaws #RainnWilson #PageKennedy #MasiOka #CliffCurtis #SharkMovie #SharkBook #SharkWeek #FilmisLit #FilmisLitPodcast #FilmiLitPod #movieadaptation #moviereviewpodcast #bookreviewpodcast #bookworm #cinephile #LauraSielingGaylord #DannyGaylord #Meg2TheTrench #LockStockandTwoSmokingBarrels

You can always start your day right with action especially with Jason Statham and now in Meg2: The Trench Jing Wu and Shuya Sophia Cai.This sequel follows Meg, the 2018 blockbuster, shark - no I mean Megalodon, the Giant Prehistoric Shark, that has recorded to be as long as 60 feet. However, the movie was 80 feet and there were multiple. The movie was so good, Mr. Fonseca aka the KID, watched it twice because he had to have his older brothers, Mateo and Andre check it out. The movie is theoried to inspire future palaeontologists and we need it because the ocean floor is the most unexplored area in the world. The movie is adapted from the bestselling novel "Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror" by Steve Alten. But this movie set in the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific Ocean may have a lot of scientific inaccuracies - the megalodon are known to be extinct, but exploring the unknown as a diver or a future scientist may inspire another generation to explore the ocean floor. Trivia fact: Why the big hype about Pippin the dog? While the Meg wants RIP Pippin, this movie keeps coming back and was first scene in the original Jaws but as Pipit, the black labrador retriever, the true star of Jaws. Positive review to make sure to go to this movie especially if Barbie is sold out, again!

Bestselling Author Announces He is Using Tumor Suppressant Gene Booster to Treat His Kidney Cancer West Palm Beach, FL, February 17, 2023 — Steve Alten, author of 18 thrillers, including the bestselling MEG series, and founder of the nonprofit Adopt-an-Author teen reading program, recently announced that a tumor discovered on his right kidney is malignant. Given a choice of surgery followed by chemotherapy, Alten opted for a little-known cancer treatment that he says he has been trying to bring to the medical field's attention ever since the scientist who created it died 18 months ago. “It's called GC-6000, and it's the brainchild of the late Dr. John Grinstein, an Israeli-trained biochemist who simplified treating and reversing all cancers down to a far easier problem to solve,” Alten explained. Dr. Grinstein studied the body's own tumor suppressant gene, called p53, which has the ability to force a malignant cell to self-destruct (apoptosis) and facilitates the repair of damaged DNA. Aging and oxidative stress are two factors that can weaken the p53 gene. “Dr. Grinstein's expertise was in knowing how to use the disease-fighting properties found in certain fruits and vegetables to help rejuvenate the p53 gene,” Alten added. According to Dr. Grinstein's records, his formulas have successfully treated and reversed the worst stage 4 cancers, including multicentric glioblastoma as well as other forms of brain cancer. “Dr. G's protocol saved two of my friends' lives — one diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer who was given three months to live,” Alten said. “The GC works fast. In 4-5 weeks, my friend's tumor had shrunk in half, and in nine months his oncologist declared him to be cancer-free. His testimonial and dozens more are available to watch at www.GoneCancer.com.” Before he passed away, Dr. Grinstein taught his assistants how to produce his cancer fighting formulas, including his GC-6000, which Alten is using to combat his kidney cancer. Alten's treatment with GC-6000 is being overseen by his own team of physicians. All information about the protocol, along with videos, patient testimonials and updates on Alten's progress is made public on the website www.GoneCancer.com. After March 3, visitors to the site can find the results of Alten's 90-day CT scan to show whether or not the treatment has had any effect on his tumor. Alten chose to share his deeply personal journey to encourage progress in all areas of cancer re

Ken wrote the best-seller Sell Your Story to Hollywood: Writer's Pocket Guide to the Business of Show Business. I wanted Ken on the show to discuss the business side of screenwriting, a part of the industry that isn't spoken about enough. We also discuss the "story market."Here some background on Ken.In 1976, Atchity founded L/A House, Inc., a consulting, translation, book, television, and film development and production company whose clients included the Getty Museum and the US Postal Service. L/A House began by extending Atchity's teaching of creative writing to manuscript consultation and soon moved on to publishing with the production of Follies, a magazine covering creativity, and CQ: Contemporary Quarterly; Poetry and Art of which he was editor. In the 1980s L/A House moved into television, with a syndicated television pilot of BreakThrough! of which Atchity was executive producer and co-writer.In 1985, L/A House began development of a set of video/TV romance film projects entitled Shades of Love, which became 16 full-length films, produced in 1986–87 with Atchity as executive producer, that aired throughout the world, distributed by Lorimar, Astral-Bellevue-Pathe, Manson International, and Warner Brothers International, nominated for Canada's Gemini Award; in the U.S. they premiered on Cinemax-HBO.In 1989 he sold L/A House and founded AEI (Atchity Editorial/Entertainment International), a literary management and motion picture production company. Atchity sold Steve Alten's Meg to Bantam-Doubleday at auction in a $2.2M deal; and then to Disney, partnered with Zide-Perry, for $1.2 (later, to Newline Pictures for a similar price). Incorporated in 1996, its name was changed to Atchity Entertainment International, Inc. in 2005.In 2006, he and manager-partner Fred Griffin of Houston's Griffin Partners along with a group of investors from Louisiana and Texas, acquired The Louisiana Wave Studio, LLC in Shreveport, Louisiana from Walt Disney Productions. For 2,000 years, the Mayan Calendar has predicted the end of humanity on a date equating to December 21, 2012. Now a new book, PHOBOS: Mayan Fear, by NY Times best-selling author Steve Alten describes two very real ticking time bombs of Mother Nature that could be triggered by the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva, either one of which would fulfill the prophesy. The first threat comes from a volcano on La Palma, one of the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa, the eruption of which would cause a massive landslide into the Atlantic that would unleash a 3,000-foot-high mega-tsunami. Scientists state such a wave would travel across the Atlantic at the speed of an airliner before decimating the east coast of the United States, leveling New York, Boston, and Miami. The second major event described in the book is far more devastating -- the long overdue eruption of the Yellowstone Caldera, a super-volcano packing the equivalent of ten thousand Mt. Saint Helens. Besides the widespread devastation and destruction, the eruption would blanket the Earth's atmosphere, cutting off the sun's rays and leading to a 100,000-year Ice Age. PHOBOS: Mayan Fear links these events with seismic disturbances caused by the release of a stranglet - a miniature black hole created by the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva. While CERN physicists contend that these black holes are too small to threaten the Earth, others disagree, including one physicist who concurred with the catastrophic threats described in Alten's book*** AND NOW ***The ‘X' Zone TV Channel on SimulTV - www.simultv.comThe ‘X' Zone TV Channel Radio Feed (Free - No Subscription Required) - https://www.spreaker.com/show/xztv-the-x-zone-tv-show-audio The ‘X' Chronicles Newspaper - www.xchroniclesnewspaper.com (Free)To contact Rob McConnell - misterx@xzoneradiotv.com

Set to debut in the U.S. on 10-10-10, NY Times and International best-selling author Steve Alten's new thriller, GRIM REAPER: End of Days is already high on Ingram's best seller list - no doubt spurred by its pre-Halloween theme and enthusiastic reviews. Says reviewer Jason Frost, "This will not be one of the best books you will read this year. This will be one of the best books you will read, period." Described as a gripping modern-day Dante's Inferno, the story takes place in the winter of 2012 when a man-made version of the Black Plague is unleashed in Manhattan. The hero, an injured war vet returning from his fourth deployment in Iraq, must journey through nine circles of suffering in order to bring the only vaccine to his estranged wife and child. Like "Inferno," Alten's tale is an allegory of the soul's journey; at the same time the author challenges the reader to find answers within themselves, forcing them to "play God." The result is a novel that transcends the reading experience. GRIM REAPER draws historical parallels to the public's present-day angst toward politicians, Wall Street, and the greed and corruption that has mired society, noting the Black Death struck humanity exactly 666 years ago following a period of greed and war, famine and corruption, with false prophets exhorting Christians to slaughter tens of thousands of Jews and Muslims. This "End of Days" event wiped out half the world's population, giving rise to a new figure depicted in 14th century art - the Grim Reaper. www.stevealten.com

If you all recall, or were like Ade and Micah thinking this movie came out like a year ago, this 2018 film centers around a giant Megalodon shark and the people it picks off. It was directed by Jon Turtletaub, who you may know directed classics like National Treasure, Cool Runnings, and 3 Ninjas. The film is loosely based on the novel Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror, written by Steve Alten. It stars Jason Statham, Li Bingbing, Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose, Winston Chao and Cliff Curtis. There is currently a sequel in development and should be released by August of next year, but until then, listen in to all of the juicy details of this week's episode, and feel free to chime in if there are any other shark horror flicks you'd like us to cover. STEVE ALTEN - Grim Reaper - Steve Alten grew up in Philadelphia, earning his Bachelors degree in Physical Education at Penn State University, a Masters Degree in Sports Medicine from the University of Delaware, and a Doctorate of Education at Temple University. Struggling to support his family of five, he decided to pen a novel he had been thinking about for years. Working late nights and on weekends, he eventually finished MEG; A Novel of Deep Terror. Steve sold his car to pay for editing fees. On September (Friday) the 13th, 1996, Steve lost his general manager's job at a wholesale meat plant. Four days later his agent had a two-book, seven figure deal with Bantam Doubleday. MEG would go on to become the book of the 1996 Frankfurt book fair, where it eventually sold to more than a twenty countries. MEG hit every major best-seller list, including #19 on the New York Times list (#7 audio), and became a popular radio series in Japan. Steve's second release, The TRENCH (Meg sequel) was published by Kensington/Pinnacle in 1999 where it also hit best-seller status. His next novel, DOMAIN and its sequel, RESURRECTION were published by St. Martin's Press/Tor Books and were runaway best-sellers in Spain, Mexico, Germany, and Italy, with the rights selling to more than a dozen countries. Steve's fourth novel, GOLIATH, received rave reviews and was a big hit in Germany. It is being considered for a TV series. MEG: Primal Waters was published in the summer of 2004. A year later his seventh novel, The LOCH, hit stores -- a modern-day thriller about the Loch Ness Monster. Steve's eighth novel, The SHELL GAME, is about the end of oil and the next 9/11 event. The book was another NY Times best-seller, but the stress of penning this real-life story affected Steve's health, and three months after he finished the manuscript he was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. Steve's ninth novel, MEG: Hell's Aquarium, is considered to be the best of the best-selling MEG series. Steve says his best novel is GRIM REAPER: End of Days. The story, a modern-day Dante's Inferno, takes place in New York when a man-made plague strikes Manhattan. Steve's novels are action-packed and very visual. He has optioned DOMAIN, MEG and The LOCH to film producers. Steve has written six original screenplays. His comedy, HARLEM SHUFFLE was a semi-finalist in the LA screenwriting contest, his comedy MINTZ MEATS was selected as a finalist at the Philadelphia film festival as was his psychological thriller, STRANGLEHOLD. Steve's reality series, HOUSE OF BABEL won at Scriptapalooza. He has also created a TV Drama, PAPA JOHN, based on his years coaching basketball with Hall of Fame coach John Chaney. Over the years, Steve has been inundated with e-mail from teens who hated reading ...until they read his novels. When he learned high school teachers were actually using his books in the classroom (MEG had been rated #1 book for reluctant readers) Steve launched Adopt-An-Author, a nationwide non-profit program designed to encourage students to read. Teachers who register for the program (it's free) receive giant shark posters, free curriculum materials, student-author correspondence, an interactive website, and classroom conference calls/visits with the author.

Steve Alten grew up in Philadelphia, earning his Bachelors degree in Physical Education at Penn State University, a Masters Degree in Sports Medicine from the University of Delaware, and a Doctorate of Education at Temple University. To date, over 10,000 teachers have registered, and the success rate in getting teens to read has been unprecedented. Steve now spends half his work week working with high schools. For more information click on www.AdoptAnAuthor.comAs an author, Steve has two goals. First, to continue to work hard to become a better storyteller and create exciting page turning thrillers. Second, to remain accessible to his readers. Book of the Month Andrew and I received the book by Philip Zimbardo & John Boyd, the Time Paradox! I had a copy of a friend, but the Kindle version is 16$ on Amazon. ----more---- Philip Zimbardo is a huge name in (pop) psychology, he's best known for the Stanford Prison Experiment, and the book reads like a big parade of the biggest things that happened in psychology, somehow related to...time. It's an interesting read on human perspective on time, and it's not a very practical self-help book but inspiring you to take a look at your own attitudes towards time. You can take the surveys to check out your own attitudes on time here! "Your attitudes on time have a profound impact on your life and your world." "Whether you look for happiness in the past, present or the future, you experience happiness in the present." I mention the article I wrote about taking the long term approach where I also mention the Marshmallow experiment that's also mentioned in the book. Pop Culture Pleasures Lianne: Wine Country on Netflix (read my Dutch review on that movie here!) Lianne: Godzilla, King of the Monsters.OBSESSED. Saw it twice. Lianne: Good Omens, it's on Amazon Prime and stars David Tennant & Michael Sheen in the TV recreation of Pratchett's & Gaiman's awesome book, Good Omens. Lianne (I had a lot to share this week): The Loch. It's terrible (especially in terms of how Steve Alten writes about women) but I like it for what it is -- suspense ridden monster stuff. I love it even more when I found out the movie The Meg is based on one of his books either. Lianne & Andrew: GAME OF THRONES. Obsessions My new pair of pants. It was the mid-'00s, and Jan de Bont—director of such big-screen velocities as Speed and Twister—was showing off a small sculpture of carcharodon megalodon, the ancient shark that was to be the star of his next film, Meg. Based on Steve Alten's 1997 book, about a deep-sea diver who encounters a prehistoric underwater beast, Meg had been the subject of a million-dollar movie-rights deal before the book was even published.

Steven Alten "Meg": On a top-secret dive into the Pacific Ocean's deepest canyon, Jonas Taylor found himself face-to-face with the largest and most ferocious predator in the history of the animal kingdom. The sole survivor of the mission, Taylor is haunted by what he's sure he saw but still can't prove exists – Carcharodon megalodon, the massive mother of the great white shark. The average prehistoric Meg weighs in at twenty tons and could tear apart a Tyrannosaurus rex in seconds. Written off as a crackpot suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, Taylor refuses to forget the depths that nearly cost him his life. With a Ph.D. in paleontology under his belt, Taylor spends years theorizing, lecturing, and writing about the possibility that Meg still feeds at the deepest levels of the sea. But it takes an old friend in need to get him to return to the water, and a hotshot female submarine pilot to dare him back into a high-tech miniature sub. Diving deeper than he ever has before, Taylor will face terror like he's never imagined, and what he finds could turn the tides bloody red until the end of time. MEG is about to surface. When she does, nothing and no one is going to be safe, and Jonas must face his greatest fear once again.
