Blake Squires began his journey in the mid-90s in Los Angeles, capitalizing early on the convergence of technology and media. He soon returned to his hometown of Cleveland to co-found Everstream with Steve McHale (episode 196) and Charlie Lougheed (episode 42, and also my co-founder at Axuall). Blake served as COO until Everstream's acquisition by Concurrent Computer Corp in 2005.Next, he co-founded Findaway, a global leader in digital audiobook distribution and creators of PLAYAWAY, a line of preloaded audiobook devices and products. Findaway was acquired by Spotify in 2022—a story shared by co-founder Mitch Kroll (episode 128) and early team member Mike Belsito (episode 52).In 2011, Blake launched Movable, a software and wearable platform built to "inspire movement." He also founded DoctorsOrders, an e-scripting tool for medical suppliers, which was acquired by Cardinal Health in 2018.Blake later partnered with inventor John Osher (of SpinBrush fame) to develop the Stubl/Shadow manual razor, acquired by Edgewell for its Schick brand. The duo also created a unique toothbrush licensed to Waken in the UK.In 2022, Blake co-founded Bloomfilter, an AI-powered process intelligence platform optimizing the product and software development lifecycle. We've heard Bloomfilter's story from his co-founder Andrew Wolfe on episode 134.By 2024, Blake had become a board partner at Greycroft and a “Fellow” at global design firm IDEO, recognized for his work supporting VCs and early-stage startups. Blake also serves as a founding advisor to the Ohio Angel Collective. As I mentioned up top, Blake's story truly is a Lay of The Land of Lay of The Land. He's deeply connected with Northeast Ohio's startup ecosystem—through this episode alone, we'll hear links to Lee Zapis (episode 7), John Knific (episode 199), David Levine (episode 132), AC Evans (episode 39), Ray Leach (episode 69), and many more.More than just well-connected, Blake is a visionary builder, inspiring leader, and accomplished serial entrepreneur with a rare ability to scale products, teams, and brands.00:00:00 - The Entrepreneurial Journey Begins  00:12:17 - Passion and the Intersection of Art and Business  00:15:09 - Defining Core Values in Entrepreneurship  00:18:27 - The Evolution of Big Mama Music  00:21:09 - Navigating Course Corrections in Business  00:23:23 - Finding the Next Problem to Solve  00:26:25 - Building a Values-Driven Company  00:28:09 - The Shift to Audiobooks and Market Insights  00:33:35 - The Role of Storytelling in Business  00:41:23 - Learning from Failure and Pivoting Strategies  00:43:22 - Scaling and Growth in Libraries  00:48:47 - Building a Strong Company Culture  00:49:08 - Lessons from Movable and the Importance of Partnerships  00:54:55 - Navigating the Healthcare Market  00:55:42 - Universal Truths in Entrepreneurship  01:01:07 - Transitioning to Advisory Roles and New Ventures  01:04:20 - Hidden Gem -----LINKS:https://www.linkedin.com/in/blakesquires/-----SPONSOR:Roundstone InsuranceRoundstone Insurance is proud to sponsor Lay of The Land. How do you acquire a boat? It's a debate between Rav and Shmuel, even after they try to draw the parallel to the acquisition of a large animal and the "pulling" that is effective in that case. In this context, Rabbi Natan raises the discussion of letters - and the Gemara fills in the details about documentation in the transfer of ship ownership. Also, what are the details that are essential for transfer of ownership to take place? Is a document enough? Is a transfer of a document enough? A dispute between Rabbi Yehudah HaNasi and the sages.

Helsingborg City in southern Sweden has transformed into a playful city. Over the past decade, the city has invested in numerous thematic playgrounds. These have encouraged school students, kindergarteners, and adults with their children to explore different parts of the city, breaking out of their usual social and neighborhood "bubbles." What a smart investment and city development strategy Helsingborgs stad. I spent my summer vacation in Helsingborg and visited these playgrounds with my niece and nephew. As an urbanist interested in making cities for children and all people, I asked parents, caregivers, and even some of their children what draws them to these thematic playgrounds. Here are their responses: -Creative, colorful designs with stories to tell -Movable benches with tables -Clean WC-Drinking water station -Play equipment that's large enough for adults to join in with their children -Accessibility via public transportation -Bicycle parking -Open urban design that offers good visibility of different play areas, allowing parents to keep an eye on their children

Also: the "apotiki" lien, which complicates the given that movable property won't be getting a lien on it, as indeed it can (when attached to property).

If you've ever had a question about the Rules of Golf, a dispute, a disagreement, or maybe worse, you're in the right place to learn the Rules of Golf. For episode eight, we discuss a common situation about Nearest Point of Complete Relief from interference by a cart path. The player then hits their ball near an obstruction, to which they try and move, but it can't be moved, so now it has become an immovable obstruction. The player measures out their relief area, but only uses the iron in their hand rather than the longest club in his bag (except his putter), is this permitted? I hope you enjoyed this episode, very free to comment and ask further questions on the Rules of Golf that we can discuss on the podcast. I met Vera a decade ago and we were both invited to speak at Deek Diedrickson's Tiny House workshop in Connecticut. She explained that my first pictures of my tiny house that I built in 2012 with rain screen inspired her to deep dive into everything from thermal bridging to mold mitigation for the build of her silver bullet tiny house. When Vera takes on a project or issue you can bet she's thorough, persistent, and resilient. Vera has been on our podcast twice before, last time she discussed pandemic tiny house living at the very beginning of 2020. Today, she will help us learn about her process of becoming an active participant in democracy to legalize the very housing product she's lived in for over a decade in Massachusetts. In This Episode:

EVERYTHING you do in your work is, from other people's perspectives, a movable part. Are you designing with that in mind? Are you rearranging what others hold fixed?   It's a wonderfully powerful constraint if embraced, yet often we're surprised by it.

This week's learning is sponsored by Elana Storch "Thank you to Rabbanit Michelle for guiding and navigating us through these complicated dapim and for creating this extraordinary and loving community of Hadran . Thank you all for the warm welcome in “real time” and in person here in Israel."  Today's learning is sponsored by the Hadran Zoom group in honor of their dear friend and co-learner, Julie Mendelsohn, on her daughter Hannah's marriage to Daniel. "We wish Hannah and Daniel much happiness, in the spirit of what we learned together in Masekhet Sota: איש ואשה זכו -שכינה ביניהם." The source for gilgul shvua is from the sotah. How do we know that it applies in monetary law as well? How do we know that we can obligate one in this type of oath, even if the claim against the person is not a definitive claim? Rav gives a case showing the extent to which we can use gilgul shvua and Rava explains to which case is Rav referring and why he specifically chose this case. Movable items can be acquired through chalipin which can mean bartering or a symbolic act where one of the parties lifts an object. Can this be done with money, produce, or only vessels? The Mishna discusses chalipin but there are three different suggestions brought as to how to read/understand the Mishna. Items acquired by the Temple treasury have different laws than regular items. Regular items can only be acquired through pulling while items for the Temple are acquired with money. Designating something with words for the treasury is as if it was pulled and it immediately considered the property of the Temple.

Moveable guitar chords are incredibly fun. They will help you be more creative, give you ideas on how to make a song of your own, and they'll help you “unlock” the guitar fretboard.   In this episode, we're taking four different guitar chords and playing them around the fretboard. There are no barre chords needed as we're just moving the guitar chord shapes up the neck and playing them with open strings.   If you've ever wondered how to start a song, what chords to begin with, or how the pros do it, you'll enjoy this episode. We focus mostly on the E chord on the guitar (as this is a great one to begin with and you'll hear why), plus there are examples using the A minor chord, the C chord, and the D chord.   Not only that, but I'm even sneaking in a tiny little ear training test anyone can do, you'll hear the chord the “Gatekeeper” of the Asylum would play if he were writing you a love song, and I announce the winners of the 13 Ways to Escape the Acoustic Asylum paperback book competition. Listen today and enjoy!   You can get more tips and advice from Dan Thorpe by joining the free email list here – https://acousticasylum.com/   Like this episode? Shane McRann Bigelow is the CEO of CHAMPtitles. In this episode, Shane reveals an eye-opening story of what he discovered as a main cause of holding entrepreneurs in developing nations back from achieving wealth — property titles to leverage against. Every owner of a movable vehicle needs a title and it's no simple process in the developing world to obtain one easily either. Whether you're a car dealership, insurance company, or government agency chances are your titles are still physical pieces of paper that are a hassle to find or update. Through the application of its secure, patented technology, CHAMPtitles digitizes the process of vehicle titling between state government, insurance carriers, financial institutions, auto dealers, and consumers, creating a legal, digital title that is easily transferable and verified.
