At 36 years old Roger realized he no longer wanted to be a senior executive of a fortune 500 company so he resigned and pursued a career in wildlife filmmaking.   Roger Horrocks is a wildlife cinematographer with 15 years of experience filming behavioural sequences for the BBC, Netflix, Disney and National Geographic. Greig Fraser, ACS, ASC, (born 3 October 1975) is an Australian cinematographer who studied at the RMIT University. His most well-known work includes the films Zero Dark Thirty (2012), Lion (2016), Rogue One (2016), Vice (2018), Dune (2021), The Batman (2022) and The Creator (2023). For his short film Cracker Bag he was nominated for Best Cinematography at the 2003 AFI Awards. For his work on Lion, he won the American Society of Cinematographers Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography in Theatrical Releases and AACTA Award for Best Cinematography and received Academy Award and BAFTA Award nominations. Fraser shot Rogue One on the Arri Alexa 65 large format digital camera and Panavision lenses from the 1970s, making it the first feature film shot entirely with the Alexa 65. Fraser said of working with the Alexa 65, "The images are sharper and have more resolution, and those things are an advantage, but for me it is about the depth of the image -- there is a three-dimensionality to it. Often the beauty came from the texture; we found that the camera excelled when we were filming something with texture; it really enhanced the quality of picture." Fraser returned to the Star Wars franchise with the 2019 television series The Mandalorian. In 2020, for his work on the series, Fraser won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series (Half-Hour). For his work on Dune he won his first Academy Award for Best Cinematography in 2022. Fraser said a feature of his work in that film was intentionally using simple compositions, "We tried to simplify the frames as much as we could. By doing that, we've been able to give the viewers that absorption of story and experience" and colour palette: "We tried quite hard to make sure that it all sat within a certain tone."

It's not easy being an elephant these days. Devastating droughts (exacerbated by climate change), encroaching development, and relentless poachers force elephants across Asia and Africa to go on the run, literally, in the pursuit of food, water and, a place to call home.   Executive Producer Lucinda Axelsson (“Elephant Diaries”, “Elephants of Samburu”, “Meerkat Manor”) of the fascinating National Geographic series “Secrets of the Elephants” joins Ken on the podcast to discuss the almost insurmountable obstacles — largely manmade — facing elephants today and the extraordinary adaptability and intelligence that keeps these remarkable animals one step ahead of extinction. Lucinda takes us behind the scenes with the production team, which managed to capture some extraordinary, never-before-seen moments in the wild, and shares her own “secrets” about what keeps drawing her back to the elephants' special world.   “Secrets of the Elephants”, which is nominated for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series and Outstanding Cinematography for a Nonfiction Program, is available for streaming on National Geographic.   Hidden Gem: “Three Salons at the Seaside”   Follow: @oxfordscientificfilms on Instagram and @oxfordsf on twitter @topdocspod on Instagram and twitter

Beautiful, natural conversations and its really how you fall in love by spending extensive amount of time with someone. More than that, you're in the same place and getting to know each other and being vulnerable with each other, attraction is bound to happen. They also support each other in a healthy relationship. There's also toxic relationships present here in the form of Raji and Ravi. Ravi is controlling, gaslights her, and doesn't respect her wishes. Raji is most fickle character. But the movie has an undeniable charm and feel good factor to it which makes it watchable. Pacing is very good up until the treasure hunt part and then it dips severely. Dog comedy is cringe, liked it when I was young but the VFX is so bad. Direction is excellent except the last 30 minutes which extended the runtime and dragged I felt. Other than that, one of Shekar Kammula's best works. Symbolism is there in the sense that the boat has a Sita and Ram statues always decorated sort of implying Ram and Sita love story on the boat and then the parrot scene symbolizes that Ram ran away or is going to just like that man's parrot which leads to Sita's heartbreak as well as the man's heartbreak. Technicalities Music by KM Radhakrishanan is CLASSIC. All the songs are fire and favorites are Uppongele Godavari and Manasa Gelupu Neede raa. Veturi's lyrics of Upppongele Godavari and Manasa Gelupu are OUTSTANDING Cinematography by Vijay C Kumar is excellent. Beautifully captured the Godavari river and Papikondalu. Art Direction by Kishore Chowski is excellent. The design of the boat and the ambience is a feast for the eyes as well as the decorations for the songs.

This week we welcome Checco Varese, our friend of the podcast and 4th time guest! The Hulu series Dopesick tells the complex story of the opioid epidemic through multiple points of view over its eight episode arc. Cinematographer Checco Varese, ASC shot every single episode, and recently earned his first Emmy award in 2022 for Outstanding Cinematography for a Limited or Anthology Series. Checco decided to approach the story and its characters as a series of four concentric plot circles. At the center of Dopesick is the Appalachian mining town and the small town doctor (Michael Keaton) who serves the community there; then the prosecutors trying to nail Purdue Pharma; the pharmaceutical company reps who are riding high on drug sales; and finally the Sackler family, who knowingly misled everyone about the addictive nature of OxyContin. He met with showrunner Danny Strong and director of the first two episodes, Barry Levinson, to discuss the look of each section. For the small Appalachian town, Checco was influenced by the look of the film The Deer Hunter, and used the cool blues of winter light. The Insider was a reference for the storyline of the DEA and Virginia prosecutors, and they embraced the use of florescent lights and conference rooms. To symbolize the wealth and excess of the Sackler family and the Purdue Pharma sales people, Checco liked the bright colors and opulence of Eyes Wide Shut. Since it's a character-driven story dramatizing true events, Checco knew that Dopesick was about being a fly on the wall, while keeping everything engaging and compelling, so he wanted to make sure that each film reference still felt subtle, natural and realistic. Checco feels that lighting for film and television can be like poetry. Most of the mood and atmosphere is made with lighting, with the camera movements serving as the film's punctuation marks: commas, exclamation points, or periods. As a cinematographer, Checco loves to go deep into the project and usually feels passionate about what he's doing, so that his soul is on the screen. He's had the opportunity to work with his wife, director Patricia Riggen, on several projects, and they also worked together on a few episodes of Dopesick. Checco says that when they're on a show together, they get very absorbed in their work, and there's no “off” switch, but he loves having that relationship with her. For Dopesick, he was excited to work on a series that was truthful and honest, and he enjoys telling important stories that matter. Dopesick is currently on Hulu. Who would have thought that running away with the circus could lead to a career as a successful filmmaker. Gary Glassman's path to filmmaking also, includes, street theater, teaching, prison work, and media technology. The through-line for Gary's creative adventure has been asking questions and, what else, telling stories.  BioGary Glassman believes television can change the world. He comes to television through street and circus performing – clowning, fire-eating, tight rope and stilt walking. His earliest media work is participatory projects with prisoners and the criminally insane, hospitalized children, and developmentally challenged adults. Prisoners, his first documentary, is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery, and the Pompidou Center in Paris. He started Providence Pictures in 1996 and as executive producer/director makes films for the world's leading broadcasters including PBS, Discovery, History, National Geographic, BBC, and Arte. His films consistently achieve the highest ratings and have won and been honored with nominations for the industry's most prestigious awards including seven Emmys, two Writers Guild Award, the AAA Science Journalism Prize, the CINE Golden Eagle, and the International Archaeology Film Festival Award. Periodically I get a guest on Behind the Shot that makes me nervous. This episode is one of those moments. Wish me luck... David Hume Kennerly is a legend. In fact, I would wager money that other 'legends' look to David Hume Kennerly as the standard by which they are judged. All of that is to say that there is no 'starting point' when trying to explain the photojournalist David Hume Kennerly. Still, the blog is here, and I have to start somewhere. Travel with me back to 1972... (insert way back machine sounds here) David was awarded the 1972 Pulitzer Prize in Journalism for Featured Photography, with a winning portfolio that included Ali being knocked down in the 15th round during the Ali v. Frazier “Fight of the Century,” images of the Vietnam and Cambodia wars, and refugees escaping into India from East Pakistan. David was just 25 at the time. Two years later, at just 27, he was appointed President Gerald R. Ford's Personal White House Photographer, the third person to have that job. Again, I have to stress this, by the time David was 27 he'd seen and documented more history that most of us learn in school. In the years since, David has photographed U.S. presidents from Johnson to Biden, and covered thirteen presidential campaigns. He was a Newsweek magazine contributing editor for ten years, and a contributing photographer for Time & Life and George magazines. American Photo named Kennerly “One of the 100 Most Important People in Photography.” Washingtonian Magazine called him "One of the 50 most important journalists in Washington, DC". That is David Hume Kennerly. One of the most important photographers ever, and his TedX talk has a title that really sums it up: Telling the Story in 1/60th of a Second As an author, David is just as successful. Kennerly has published several books of his work, Shooter, Photo Op, Seinoff: The Final Days of Seinfeld, Photo du Jour, Extraordinary Circumstances: The Presidency of Gerald R. Ford, and David Hume Kennerly On the iPhone. He was also a major contributor to the CNN 2016 book, Unprecedented: The Election that Changed Everything. His exclusive portrait of Trump is on the cover. He was executive producer of The Spymasters, a 2015 CBS/Showtime documentary about the directors of the CIA. He also produced The Presidents' Gatekeepers, a four-hour Discovery Channel film about White House chiefs of staff.  Kennerly was nominated for a Primetime Emmy as executive producer of NBC's, The Taking of Flight 847, and was the writer and executive producer of a two-hour NBC pilot filmed in Thailand, Shooter, starring Helen Hunt. Shooter, based on Kennerly's Vietnam experiences, won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Cinematography. In 2019 The University of Arizona Center for Creative Photography acquired the David Hume Kennerly Archive that features almost a million images, prints, objects, memorabilia, correspondence and documents. University President Dr. Robert C. Robbins appointed Kennerly as the university's first Presidential Scholar. When trying to pick an image for this show I lost over an hour browsing through David's site, specifically his 'Greatest Hits' gallery. The image of U.S. President Gerald Ford at the desk in the Oval Office, feet up is amazing. This was the day after he became president, August 10, 1974, and the bookshelves are empty because Nixon's things had been removed, but Ford's memorabilia had yet to arrive, due to the suddenness of the transition. The image of Mohammed Ali being knocked down in the 15th round at Madison Square Garden by Joe Frazier was part of Kennerly's Pulitzer Prize-winning portfolio. Then there was "The Hug", an image where Michelle Obama is hugging former president George W. Bush. Picking one image was hard, but with David's help we found the shot. There is a quote on David's website from James Earl Jones that wraps up David's career perfectly: “David Hume Kennerly is like Forrest Gump, except he was really there.”

As we continue our coverage of the 2021 Emmy Awards, we recently sat down with the Emmy-nominated editor and sound team for the fantastic nature program / retrospective biography / urgent and dire warning for humanity, "David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet." The film pulled material from over 50 years of Sir David's career to create what many believed to be his final big documentary. And working on the film was an understandably emotional experience. "The way David likes to do his narration records is — we'll do a complete run through. So that first run through is like watching the film, sometimes. And I have to say, there were several points — and I'm sitting there just recording it, pressing record and sort of watching it through — that I was really choked up, as it's David telling his story. And it was lovely.  Afterwards, I came out into the room and he just said, 'thank you.' You know he was obviously moved and touched by the film and just basically said, thank you for making such a great film, which told what he wanted to say, so eloquently. And he was obviously moved by it as, as we all were." — Graham Wild, Dubbing Mixer, "David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet" We're very pleased to share with you this interview with Editor Martin Elsbury, Supervising Sound Editor (and previous Emmy winner) Tim Owens, and Dubbing Mixer Graham Wild about their process of pulling together such a marvelous film using so much original and archival footage, and making such a moving portrait of a career and a planet on the brink, all in a running time of just under 2 hours. The film has https://www.emmys.com/shows/david-attenborough-life-our-planet (5 Emmy nominations), including Outstanding Cinematography, Outstanding Picture Editing, Outstanding Sound Editing, Outstanding Sound Mixing, and Outstanding Music Composition. Emiliano Ruprah joins me on the podcast this week. Born in Mexico to an Italian mother and an Indian father, he grew up in Washington DC.  He is an explorer, adventurer, writer, tv presenter, and documentary filmmaker, who continues to walk the path less travelled. He has traveled to some of the most inaccessible places on earth, documenting wildlife, conflict zones, and vanishing cultures for the likes of Discovery Science, Smithsonian, National Geographic and Atlas Obscura.Emiliano has managed to retain the sense of wonder and intellectual curiosity that this world needs more of, and he's got so many interesting stories that we could likely fill several episodes. I caught up with him just after he landed back in the US, having returned from some time in the rainforest tracking the movements of endangered Jaguars. Most notably, his latest documentary on epic animal migrations called NOMADS, which he directed, received an Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Cinematography. I was lucky enough to watch it, and if you're a fan of famous programs like BBC's Blue Planet or any of the David Attenborough specials, you'll love NOMADS too.I hope that you enjoy listening to Emiliano speak to all the inner work he has done, all the interesting places that he has seen, and all the lessons he's learned on his travels across the globe. James Jones and Olivier Sarbil and Face2Face host David Peck talk about their new film On The Presidents Orders, ego and vanity, trust and inconvenient complexities, the war on and drugs and poverty and activism. Trailer Playing at Hot Docs 2019 Synopsis: From acclaimed investigative filmmakers James Jones and Olivier Sarbil (Mosul, 2017) comes On The President's Orders, the searing story of President Duterte's brutal campaign against drug dealers and users in the Philippines. Shot in the style of a thriller, this observational film combines the look and feel of a narrative feature film with a real-life journalistic investigation into a campaign of killings. In May 2016, Rodrigo Duterte won a landslide presidential victory in the Philippines, promising to eradicate the country's drug problem by whatever means necessary. His ensuing drug war has led to the deaths of thousands of alleged drug dealers and users. When a new police chief, Jemar Modequillo, is brought in to clean up the infamous Caloocan district of Manila, Jones and Sarbil gain unprecedented access to both the police and the desperately poor neighborhood they operate in. Modequillo’s aim is to curb the bloodshed by boosting actual arrests of suspected traffickers and users. Filmed over almost a year, the film investigates the activities of Modequillo’s force, as it gradually becomes clear that even though the president and the police have promised an end to the extra-judicial killings, deaths continue and many suspect the police are still behind it. For more info on the film head here. About the Directors: James Jones is an award-winning British director who makes documentary films for international television and theatrical release. His documentaries tackle important issues through powerful personal stories told in a filmic style and narrative. He has made films about police shootings in America, suicide in the military, wars in Ukraine and Gaza, and undercover investigations in Saudi Arabia and North Korea. His background in current affairs investigations means the films still have a hard journalistic edge while using the craft techniques of documentary. His films have won two Emmys, three DuPonts, a Grierson, a Rory Peck, a Frontline Club, a Royal Television Society, a Broadcast Award, two Overseas Press Club of America, two Golden Nymphs, and a Venice TV Award, as well as being nominated five times at the BAFTAs. Recently, he co-directed the Emmy-winning Mosul with Olivier Sarbil. Olivier Sarbil is an award-winning French documentary director and Emmy-winning cinematographer based in London. Over the past decade, Olivier has covered conflicts and critical social issues across Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and North America. With strong visual storytelling, Olivier’s films are intimate and human, conveying emotions through beautiful and cinematic imagery. His work has been recognised with awards from a variety of organisations, including, Emmy for Outstanding Cinematography, DuPont, Royal Television Society, One World Media, Overseas Press Club of America, Broadcast Awards, Bayeux-Calvados for war correspondents (twice), Golden Nymph, Rory Peck, Venice TV Award, Frontline Club, Grand Award and Gold Medal at the New York Festivals International TV & Film. For Ben Kutchins, his love of film and filmmaking started out the way it did for a lot of kids; finding an old 35mm camera in a parent's drawer, dusting it off and giving it a go. Looking at life through a lens became a hobby, then a passion and during college he interned, as many people who are interested in film and live in Northern California do, at Lucasfilm. That internship turned into a job but he saw the tides turning from film to digital and that he was on track to a working at a desk, which he didn't want. Pushing back, he left a job offer from Lucasfilm and entered NYU's film program. It was everything he wanted; shooting over 60 short films, learning the language of film and learning from and with Reed Morano (Emmy-winning director of The Handmaid's Tale) and Rachel Morrison (Mudbound, and the first ever female director of photography nominated for the Cinematography Oscar). Throughout his career Kutchins has been inspired by cinematographers like Oscar-winner Emmanuel Lubezki ("He moves the camera in the most naturalistic way that I've seen of any modern cinematographer"), Roger Deakins ("The best lighting cameraman I've ever seen), Gordon Willis ("He knows how to give each location its own beating heart") and more. For his work on Netflix's Ozark, Kutchins earned the first Emmy nomination of his career in the category of Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series (One Hour). But he'll tell you he didn't get there alone ("I take every day as a gift, I don't take that lightly"). He had been the cinematographer on a film starring Jason Bateman (The Longest Week) and that relationship earned him a spot on Bateman's team for the Emmy-nominated Netflix hit ("We get excited about the same things, we're real film nerds"). Working with Stephani Lewis (costume designer) and Derek Hill (production designer, who's also Emmy-nominated) on finding the look of Ozark, Kutchins calls it a "melding of minds" and "gearing towards the same aesthetic." Ozark returns to Netflix for its second season on August 31st. You can watch the trailer here. The Emmy voting period ends August 27th at 10pm PST. The Creative Arts Emmys will be a two-night affair on Saturday, September 8th (where Kutchin's category is slotted) and Sunday, September 9th. The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards will be Monday, September 17th.
