In today's episode, Lynn Roush, LPC, sits down with Lori Ann Wood, an inspiring author, speaker, and survivor of medical trauma. As part of our series on “Surviving and Thriving After Trauma,” we are delving into the challenges and lessons that come from facing health crises, and the shift that needs to occur from being a “fixer” to accepting that not everything in life can or will be solved. When a trip to urgent care led to a 2 week stay in the ICU as a critical care patient, Lori Ann Wood's life went from predictable to precarious. Being diagnosed with end stage heart failure with an enlarged heart functioning at only 6%, Lori Ann was faced with a health crisis that would test her faith with an uncertain future. Lynn and Lori Ann discuss how medical crises disrupt not only your physical well-being but also create emotional, psychological and spiritual instability. When you receive a “forever diagnosis”, nothing seems normal anymore and everyone in the family is affected by the detour that occurs when you lose your health. Lori Ann's journey of receiving a life-altering diagnosis and how she processed the feelings of failure, guilt and shame that come with chronic illness, will encourage and comfort anyone who can relate to the struggle to find hope when your heart - or health - fails. In this powerful episode of Bleeding Daylight, author Lori Ann Wood shares her extraordinary journey from being declared exceptionally healthy to fighting for her life with just 6% heart function. Three weeks after praying about an exciting new chapter in her empty-nest life, Wood found herself in cardiac ICU, facing a diagnosis that would transform not just her physical health, but her entire approach to faith and purpose. Through her book "Divine Detour" and her candid conversation with host Rodney Olsen, Wood reveals how her experience with chronic heart failure led to unexpected ministry opportunities and deeper spiritual insights. Her story challenges conventional views of faith, healing, and God's presence in times of crisis, while offering hope and perspective to anyone facing life's unexpected detours. Wood's journey from college instructor to inspirational author demonstrates how life's greatest challenges can become pathways to profound purpose and meaning. EPISODE 278 - Lori Ann Wood - How An Incurable Heart Failure Created a Divine DetourMy heart journey began in November 2015: the physical part on November 27, the spiritual part three weeks earlier. On November 6, around 10:00 pm on a stretch of highway a few hours from my home, I prayed specifically for God to make my life matter in His Kingdom and pledged that I would do anything to that end. Immediately, apprehensive tears streamed down my face as I realized the weight of that promise.Less than a month later, I almost died from heart failure from an unknown cause: severe idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy. I soon learned I had an EF of 8% and spent 14 days in the hospital, most of it in ICU, as doctors tried to save my life. All of this despite having no risk factors, no family history, low blood pressure, low cholesterol levels, and a recent medical evaluation declaring that I had less than 3% chance of ever developing heart disease. I was emergency flighted to Cleveland Clinic and became their most critical patient for 16 months. During that time I wore a Life Vest external defibrillator, carefully titrated my meds to maximum dosages, and eliminated sodium from my diet. I was eventually implanted with a Biventricular CRT-D, a combination pacemaker/internal defibrillator.Meanwhile, thousands of people prayed for me around the clock despite a grim prognosis and sympathetic tears from every doctor we encountered. Some would say nothing much happened for many, many months, but the miracle was that I survived. Peace enveloped my husband and I, and we held on tight and trusted. Against all medical odds, my EF was restored on March 27, 2017.I don't want to mislead you into thinking my journey is over, that the story is fully written. I have had setbacks since, physically, and even spiritually. But God showed up countless times throughout the journey and continues to walk through this with me, as I put my today and tomorrow in His tender, merciful hands, and wait for what is next. I trust in God as a loving father. If He chooses to normalize my heart and grant me years into old age, then may He receive all praise and glory. If God has a different story that He is writing, please pray I can endure that journey with the grace and peace that is only experienced through the Spirit of God. A serious diagnosis took Lori Ann Wood on a faith detour she never saw coming. As a lifelong believer, she felt profound disappointment in the God she thought she knew. Wanting answers, but more than anything, needing permission to ask the questions, she took the risky decision to embrace those difficult questions. She shares her hard-won insights today on Gospel Spice. Lori Ann was raised by a mother who strongly believed in God, but she didn't initially feel the same conviction towards faith. Lori Ann compared faith to how people have different tastes and preferences with cilantro, with some believing without a doubt, while others may come to faith through questioning. Lori Ann embraced her unique perspective and believes that God does not think less of her for it. Lori Ann's journey towards faith began after she was diagnosed with heart failure. She was given a journal to write out questions and complaints to God during uncertain and difficult times, and it eventually turned into a blog where she started sharing spiritual content. People related to her spiritual struggles, and Lori Ann saw a connection between her questions and Jesus' temptations in the desert, which helped frame the content of her book, Divine Detours, into three questions to deepen one's faith. During the episode, Lori Ann discussed three important questions related to faith: the question of worry, the question of doubt, and the question of control. She admitted to struggling with the latter due to her natural tendency towards planning and control. However, she believes that Jesus is the perfect companion, friend, savior, and God who can help us through our unbelief. Lori Ann also reflected on the value of asking questions and how they wish they had instilled this value in their younger self and their own children. Lori Ann believes that questions are an important part of their faith journey, referencing how Jesus used questions in his teachings. BONUS | GO DEEPER WITH QUESTIONS, ALONE OR WITH A FRIEND. Lori Ann invites us to ask deep questions fearlessly. Here are a few to come alongside your own journey! 1. What was your biggest takeaway from Lori Ann Wood's story? 2. Do you relate more to the idea of faith coming easily or through questioning? Why? 3. How do you think Lori Ann's struggle with illness impacted her faith journey? 4. Have you ever struggled with any of the three questions Lori Ann posed (worry, doubt, control)? How did you overcome them? 5. What do you think it means to "ask questions" in relation to faith? How can questioning faith strengthen it? 6. What insights did you gain from Lori Ann's reflections on her book and her journey as an author? 7. How do you feel about the comparison between faith and cilantro? Do you see any parallels between the two? 8. Have you ever felt like the woman who touched Jesus's cloak and was healed? What parallels do you see between that story and your own faith journey? 9. Do you agree with the idea that asking for healing (spiritual, emotional, relational, or physical) is important and that God is not afraid of people's questions? 10. In what ways can we cultivate a closer relationship with God and deepen our faith? How do you plan to do this? Aren't we tempted to quit when things get hard or uncomfortable? I wonder how many times in our lives we would have realized our dream, the desire of our hearts, or the call on our lives if we had pushed through just a little longer. I think about the way many of the heroes of our faith persevered despite difficult or long-lasting circumstances. Consider how their stories would have changed if they had quit too soon. What if Moses had stopped pleading with Pharaoh after nine plagues rather than ten? The Israelites would have remained in slavery in Egypt. What if Joshua and the Israelites had stopped walking around the wall of Jericho after six times rather than seven? They would have never seen the walls fall and entered into the promised land. What if Noah had only built half of an ark? That would not have floated very well, would it? Nor would his family and all of those animals have lived through the flood. And, what about you? What if you are on the brink of a breakthrough and stop too soon? Lori Ann Wood is on the show today chatting about how a little perseverance goes a long way. She's sharing about her life detour that reordered her priorities and rattled her faith. Her experience inspired her book Divine Detour and she's encouraging us to believe that the path you'd never choose can lead to the faith you've always wanted. I don't know how long you have been circling the same problem or what difficult situation you are facing today, but if you are tempted to give up, I hope you will reconsider. Lori Ann is the author of the book Divine Detour: The path you'd never choose can lead to the faith you've always wanted. The book Divine Detour is created based on Lori Ann's personal experience and insights into how she survives the tragedy in her life that causes her to make a detour. In this episode, Lori Ann shared her experience of having a serious heart condition, how she fought this adversity, and how it led her to write her book Divine Detour.Lori Ann talks about how she had a normal life, being a teacher, a wife, and a mother, all according to plan. But life struck as she was diagnosed with a serious heart disease, which put her life hanging by a thread. For a long time, Lori does everything she can to heal, but it seems that her disease won't let go. But Lori won't just sit and do nothing, as she is an active high, functioning heart failure patient. She found out that writing doesn't take that much energy. And so this is where it began for Lori to write her book Divine Detour.Lori Ann tells how her book started because her friend left a notebook for her while in the hospital. She uses this notebook to write questions, not to doctors, but questions about life. Because her husband encourages her to keep writing, this notebook eventually becomes the book.Furthermore, Lori talks about the question everybody asks when you detour in life, which is also the question Jesus faced. The following questions are the question of worry, the question of doubt, and the question of control.Lori Ann Wood's story is spiritual and a life-changing example of one who had been thrown into a detour in life and experienced a drastic change but still fought to find the purpose in life. This episode of The Beyond Adversity Podcast is a must-listen for anyone who is detoured in life and currently on the path to finding the meaning of life — those who want to see an example of a person who goes through hard times but finds the Divine Detour.“The Beyond Adversity Podcast with Dr. Brad Miller is published weekly with the mission of helping people “Grow Through What They Go Through” as they navigate adversity and discover their promised life of peace, prosperity, and purpose. https://loriannwood.com/https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BS4PH35M|Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@loriannwoodauthor/featured Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DivinelyDetoured/ Podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/lori-ann-wood Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/loriannwood/

I'm so grateful to Lori Ann Wood's testimony of gentle faith and insight into how God deepened her faith through a life-changing experience with heart failure. At 51, Lori was healthy and strong, until she wasn't. After 7 years, drs still don't have answers as to why her heart failed in 2015 and how long until it happens the next time. Lori turned this trial and testing into lessons of deepened faith—lessons we all can benefit from. We might not all get such an unusual and frightening diagnosis, but we all go up against some type of brick wall where we find out what is it we really believe about God. Her book, Divine Detour: The Path You Didn't Choose Can Lead to the Faith You've Always Wanted, releases this week, and she will be hosting a giveaway. I think you'll need one as a gift and one to keep. Some gems: Anytime when faced with a temptation, we must ask ourselves the question: "Do we trust God to meet our needs or not?" I learned that my faith had been all about me rather than about God. Doubts are not the opposite of faith—indifference is. God never promises a live of ease and comfort this side of heaven; He does promise He will always be with us, and that is the greater blessing. Questions are what strengthens faith. Do we want the safer life or the deeper life? From Lori: I'm Lori Ann Wood and I know what it's like to be detoured in life. By sharing my stories and experiences, I want to equip and empower you to ask God your hard questions. More importantly, I want to cheer you on as your faith grows in the process. Have you questioned life when facing an unwanted path? Today's guest, Lori Ann Wood, shares insights on how we can grow stronger through our faith struggles when facing spiritual and circumstantial crises. After discovering a serious heart condition almost too late, Lori Ann Wood became an award-winning author who encourages deep faith questions along the detours of life. Lori shares her personal story of discovering her heart function had dropped to six percent. Despite a lack of risk factors, family history, or lifestyle indicators, she received a diagnosis of a critical heart condition. In addition to health questions, Lori faced serious faith questions. Wood relates how her journaling process helped her as she struggled with spiritual doubts and questions during her heart failure journey. Lori identifies the main three questions people ask while struggling on an unwanted path in life: Is this life all there is? Is God always good? Is God's plan enough? Wood reveals that these mirror the trials faced by Jesus in the wilderness. When facing a temptation, we're also weighing an internal question. We discuss how God responds to our struggles of faith. Lori relates how she feared her lack of faith kept others' prayers for her healing from being effective. God is not afraid of our questions, however. The opposite of faith is not doubt, but indifference. Our questions might repeat, but entreating God keeps the conversation going. Struggles do not prove spiritual weakness, but can instead strengthen our faith. Lori points to the Psalms, in which authors like David often struggle with faith questions and work through them with the Lord. Lori advises those in a faith struggle to borrow others' words to pray when prayer proves difficult (praying the Psalms, listening to podcasts, worship music, e.g.). Wood explains she learned that God's goodness is not defined by how well my life matches my plan. If my plan doesn't work out, it doesn't change God's nature or character. Lori states that sometimes the period when we feel God is silent can grow our faith and redirect us to God's heart for us. Questions are part of faith.
