We've all had that marketing brainstorm sitting alone at a desk. It sounds like a good idea so you bounce it off other people. everybody excitedly supports the concept. You execute it the best that you can, but it doesn't work out they way you planned. You should give up, but you've built this whole program so you double down and you keep pushing and pushing. Eventually you have to accept it wasn't as good an idea as you thought. It is always painful when you realize you have made a mistake, but the longer you pursue an idea that isn't working, the more you delay your ultimate success. Now I'm not suggesting abandoning ideas after two or three months, but if you give it your best, investing time and effort and it just doesn't click, you have to prepare to try something else.. That's where I have right now. I created a private Facebook group for the Digital Toolbox.  Private, because I thought that would give it a little bit of prestige by making people feel they were joining something exclusive. But Facebook groups are a dime a dozen so after an initial burst it stagnated. As a private group, people who might have been interested in what we were talking about never saw the information in their feeds. So after several years of pushing this idea of a private Facebook group I'm accepting defeat and will try a different approach. Facebook won't let me change the private group to public, so I have launched a new group. The More than a Few Words Club is a public group for fans of show, my guests and other business owners who want to have conversations about marketing.

Welcome back to Imperfect Marketing! This episode with Lorraine Ball is truly chock full of tips, ideas, and insights that I am sure will help you and your marketing. It's time to build landing pages that convert!Click here to access the transcript and follow along. Here are a few of the things that we discussed:Landing pages should be about one (1) topic. The word on the button you have makes a difference.Use bright colors on your buttons so they stand out.TEST! Don't just set it and forget it.Another piece of our conversation revolved around your website. Do people know what you do when they get to your website? The thing to keep in mind, and I feel like a broken record, is that they don't care about you. They have a problem and want to know if you can fix it. So, help them out and answer their questions upfront. She issued a challenge to you all, too: print out 2-3 pages of your website. Then, grab a red pen and a blue pen. If you see first-person words like I, we, my, our, us, etc., circle them in red. When you see words like you, and your, circle them in blue. You should have two blues for each red. If you don't, then you need to start re-writing your website. People want to feel like the copy is written directly to them, and doing so can help you build landing pages that convert. Then, we did jump over to talking about target audiences. (One of my favorite topics!) So many people are scared to narrow down their target audience, and I think Lorraine said it well when she said, "Who you market to is not necessarily who you sell to."There is a difference between where you spend your marketing time and effort and who you accept business from.I think that's a great way to look at it!Want to connect with Lorraine? When it comes to content marketing you need to be playing the long game. It is unrealistic to think  you're going to throw a blog post out there today and get results tomorrow. But, if you invest in consistently creating good quality content it will pay off eventually. You're not going to double your traffic overnight but those blog posts will build value over time.  You will see content  you wrote a week or maybe even a month ago, start to be found in niches and continue to drive traffic for months and even years to come. Search engines may not notice the first article you write on a topic. But once you have a series of articles suddenly you begin to be perceived as an authority on that subject and and you will see your search traffic increase.  As that begins to occur, your inquiries will go up as well. And so my friends you need to be patient and play the long game.  If you'd like help building out your content be sure to check out all of the tools the Digital Toolbox

There is this wonderful song written by Peter Allen in the 1970 s.  Everything old is New Again. In a way that song sums up where marketers are these days. When that song was written fifty years ago, television advertising ruled. Businesses used the platform to build awareness by reaching a wide audience with little concern about demographics. It didn't matter who saw your message as long as you got in front of as many people as possible. The assumption was sooner or later someone would buy. Then along came digital media and especially social media marketing and suddenly marketers could target messages more precisely based on interests and demographics. Social media became a valuable tool to move prospects through the buyer's journey. Unfortunately with changes in social media algorithms and more restrictions to protect user privacy we seem to be back in time.  We are forced to put lots of broad messages out there in  the hopes of driving someone to our website and email list. Everything old is new again.  If you are looking to keep up with the changes and and find resources to stay in the game, check out  The Digital Toolbox

Like many business owners I made the transition from paper to digital tools a few years ago, but some days it feels as if I am juggling too many digital tools.  So my goal for this year is to streamline my digital toolkit and make those tools really productive.  To help me do that I turned to Dr. Frank Buck, author of Get Organized Digitally for a few productivity tips and tricks.  He suggests:  It is time to get rid of the sticky notes and paper tasks lists and get yourself a good digital task list.  Look for a tool which connects to your calendar and address book with both desktop and mobile versions  Say goodbye to scrambling for pen every time you have an idea. With a good notes application you capture all those brilliant ideas that pop into your head and come back to them when you have time.  Above all select tools you feel comfortable using.  Dr. Frank Buck Most people are overwhelmed by the amount of paper and digital information in their lives. Frank Buck makes organization easy so you can increase productivity, decrease stress, and enjoy life. Global Gurus ranked Frank #1 in the world in the "Time Management" category for 2019, 2020, and 2021. I want to ask you a very specific question. Who were you writing for? Now, if you have a personal blog and you're documenting the days of your life, you're writing for yourself. But if you have a business blog then you are writing with business objectives in mind.  Those objectives are directed towards a specific audience and you need to write for them.  So, are are you writing for your customers or are you writing for your referral partners who will pass the information on to your customers?  Does your target audience have a high level of expertise or are they primarily novices? Once you decide on a target audience, it's easier to figure out what you should be writing and where you should be promoting them once they're written. It's fine to have more than one audience for the overall blog, but individual posts should focus on a specific group or section of your target population. One of the most interesting findings in this year's digital marketing survey was on the topic of blogging.  Fewer small business owners than ever told us they were using blogging as part of their marketing. And even those that do blog, are blogging less often. Why is this a big deal? Because blogging is such an important part of your internet marketing strategy. It provides content to feel your social media updates, and it helps you build credibility. Blog posts provide a place to showcase work samples, case studies, product updates, and company news.  Your blog shortens your sales cycle as it helps customers get to know you, your employees and your approach to solving problems just like theirs. Finally blog posts give you a steady stream of rich, relevant content to increase the chance that your site will show up in Google searches. Have I answered the question, "why blog"?  I hope so. The marketing minute is a shorter version of the popular More than a Few Words podcast. Instead of a conversation with a marketing professional, host Lorraine Ball shares a quick tip to start you on your week  Real branding is so much more than just your logo, business card and letterhead. A real company brand encompasses what you want people to think and feel about your brand. And so beyond the color and logo, there's also messaging and tone, and how your brand is extended not just on your website and in print, but in social media, and even public interactions. All of this helps you and your employees answer that question, what do you do and how do you do it? It is  fairly easy to keep your brand consistent when your company only consists of two or three people. But what happens when you continue to grow to 10, 20 or even 100 people? How do you ensure your brand is still presented consistently. You will need a solid brand standard document that everyone has a copy of. You will need to train every time you get a new employee so that they understand your brand. And finally you need to pick a brand champion, someone who owns that identity and helps other employees implement it. Looking for help building your brand kit?  You will find lots of branding resources in the Digital Toolbox.  Check it out today!
