Sermon Podcast for Cornerstone Community Church in Galax, Virginia
Life isn't always easy. We all face seasons of struggle, uncertainty, and feeling lost. But the good news is—God meets us in the wilderness. Throughout Scripture, we see how God showed up for people in their hardest moments, providing direction, hope, and rescue. This Sunday, we're continuing our series The Wilderness by looking at the life of John the Baptist. John spent years in the wilderness, but God used that season to prepare him for his mission — to point […] The post The Wilderness: A Place to Change Direction appeared first on Cornerstone Community Church.

La Porta | Renungan Harian Katolik - Daily Meditation according to Catholic Church liturgy
Delivered by Father Peter Tukan, SDB from Salesian Don Bosco Gerak in the Diocese of Labuan Bajo, Indonesia. Galatians 4: 31b - 5: 6; Rs psalm 119: 41.43.44.45.47.48; Luke 11: 37-41 DO NOT FORCE GOD TO CHANGE DIRECTION The theme of our meditation today is: Do Not Force God to Change Direction. The city of Avila in central Spain, is the city of Saint Teresa who because of her holiness, strength, and excellence in the spirit of Christian life, was able to change the entire community in the city. Teresa, who came from the most influential noble family in the city, was seen as a sign of Salvation for the entire city. To this day, Avila is the only city in the world that is protected on all sides by medieval walls that are still intact. There are almost no ruins or debris of its walls like in many other cities in the world due to war or lack of significant maintenance. Avila is truly for the citizens of the world, an honest confession of the strength of the Christian faith in Teresa in particular and the cultural character inherent in Spain and Europe. Saint Teresa of Avila brought into the world, especially in her time, a Christian spirituality that saves and sanctifies. The Lord Jesus is the center of Christian life. He must not be forced to change his position and change direction which will result in obscuring many people who walk and come to Him. A Parish Priest told a story about half of the Catholic youth in the parish who no longer wants to pray and come to church. He was worried about his congregation, including the altar servers who had chosen to become servants of pleasures of the world and not servants of God. They think that God should not be found only in spiritual activities in the Church. God is also present in parties of drinking alcohol, in free sex, in adultery, in corruption, and in other crimes. They really enjoy those pleasures of the world because there they find satisfaction. God has been made to change direction as he is no longer straight with the truth of His will. Saint Paul in the first reading really hopes that our faith will only be straight to Christ, the Son of God. Today the life-style of the Pharisees is marked by people adoring the increase development and advancement in communication technology. Lies and hypocrisy spread so quickly and are frowned upon by people of today's world. It seems that God and his truth will continue to be forced to change direction. The Lord Jesus strongly condemned this Pharisaic lifestyle, namely hypocrisy that is spread and enforced on a massive scale. So together with Jesus who is so firm and Saint Paul who is sincere, we need to hold firmly to this warning: don't force God to change direction. Instead, just follow the direction of Saint Paul and Jesus because that is the straight direction to the Father. Let us pray. In the name of the Father... Almighty God, we want to affirm our confession of faith to follow Christ correctly and responsibly, so bless us and our intension. Hail Mary full of grace... In the name of the Father...

As of June 28, Freddie Mac CFO Christian Lown will resign from the government-sponsored enterprise (GSE) mortgage provider to join CoStar, the behemoth real estate listing and data and analytics company valued at around $30 billion. Usually, when someone leaves a government job for the private sector, there's a tacit understanding that the new position comes with less public scrutiny and more—much more—money. We are a few months into the biggest change we have ever gone through within our business, moving from a flower design led business, to a brand fully focussed on supporting you within your own business, taking our years of experience in running a multi-level, 7 figure global business, and now sharing all our marketing and strategy insights. It's a huge change, but it has also felt like the most natural change, because it came from a deep desire within me, and it comes with full support from everyone within my team! I would love to take you back a bit, to why I wanted to make this change so badly, to share how it has impacted our business in the first few months and our plans for the next year and beyond. I hope this episode is a huge support for you, if you are looking to make a big change in your life. Perhaps you are currently in a corporate role and longing to set up your own business, to claim back your time and to be more of who you are, to do more of what truly inspires you and makes you happy. Perhaps you are a full-time carer for others, and you are now ready to do something that is truly your own, to claim financial independence and a new identity, that sits true with exactly who you are, to explore and strengthen those skills you believe are deep down. Or perhaps you have a thriving company, but you know in your heart that it is not what you most love doing, and you are desperate for a shift in direction, to move it closer to something you are truly passionate about, or a longing to grow exactly what you are doing right now, further and expand your offerings. To wake up in the morning, to feel excited to get started on new projects, willing to take risks, because you know you will pour your heart into it and you will work tirelessly until you make it a success. If you resonate with any of these, this episode is for you! https://www.philippacraddock.com/podcast-008 You can DM Philippa on Instagram @PhilippaCraddock
Lao Tzu said over 2,000 years ago that "If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading." And yet, who amongst us doesn't know how hard it can be to make even the smallest change in life? In this episode, Scott gives us some motivation to proactively make the changes we need to make. What follows is a rough, unedited transcript of the audio recording. While it may contain errors, for those who prefer to read, rather than listen, we hope this will be helpful. Welcome back to the Living Compass Spirituality and Wonders podcast. I am your host, Scott Stoner. And whether you are joining us for the first time or for the 45th time Episode 45 of the Living Compass podcast, we are delighted you are here. Living Compass is an initiative that I started in 2009 that is about the integration of spirituality and wellness integration and my two professional backgrounds as a marriage and family therapist and an Episcopal clergy person. And my personal lifelong journey of integrating spirituality and wellness. I'm delighted that you're interested in this topic, too. We're on this path together. While I have some professional experience in this field. I speak as a fellow traveler. And speaking of a fellow traveler, here's a quote that's related to moving in a certain direction, traveling, if you will, by the ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu. If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading. If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading. I love that. I don't know if he had a good sense of humor. He was a wise philosopher. Certainly, But I just love the clever way of saying that. It's so obvious, right? If we keep doing what we've always doing, we'll get the same results. If we keep heading in the same direction. You just may end up where you are heading in Living Compass and in my work and in my life. I just I talk a lot about change because change is difficult. Habit change is really hard. And so I love this is kind of both a late way, in a serious way to talk about this. If you don't change direction, you'll end up where you're heading. Who amongst us doesn't know that and hasn't known that in some particular aspect of well-being in our life, and yet how hard it is to change the habit loops that we get into the ways that we are constantly doing things that are unfamiliar ways of doing things. It's easier to see it writing outside of ourselves, so I can see it sometimes with an organization that I consult with and say, I consult with the church, for example, and they have been doing the same thing over and over again for a long time in some aspect of their of their organization. And they're frustrated that the results are diminishing, the results are declining as the fruits of that of their effort. And so they keep doing the same thing over and over again, thinking somehow it's going to change at some point. Right. And again, it's easy for me to see that in in someone else, harder for me to see that in my self. For me, it has been as I grow older, I'm a pretty much a type-A person and I tend to push myself in a lot of things and and I can get by. And that when I was younger, as I get older, though, I can't do that. I don't have the same stamina, the same energy, the same ability to do all the things I used to do. And yet sometimes I forget that and I keep doing things that keep moving in the same direction. And then I wonder why I'm tired or why I get injured or when I'm running or something. And so here's another way in which I see this. It comes up in relationships a lot. Relationships can get in patterns. We create patterns in relationships, and then the patterns create us. So let's say we have a pattern in a relationship where we don't really talk about conflict. We don't really talk about things that are hard to talk about. And so we just keep moving in that direction. And and the conflict doesn't go away when there is a conflict, but the conflict goes, it increases. And if you try to change that pattern, that direction, you're going to get met with a lot of vulnerability, a lot of anxiety, a lot of resistance maybe from the other person. So you've got to bring the other person into the conversation, you know, hey, I noticed that when every time money comes up around or every time, you know, this comes up in a relationship, we both tend to avoid it. And I wonder if you want to let's reflect on that. I'd like to change that and let's change the direction that we're headed. All of our materials are based on the image of the compass, the living compass, the compass, moral well-being and a compass helps us set check our bearings and set our course. And we know that if we just change our bearings a little bit, if you change your bearings on a and a trajectory and the movement in which you're moving, whether you're in a ship or on a car or a boat or walking or in your life metaphorically, if you just change it three degrees, it may not seem like much at first, but down the road, over time, you're going to end up in a very different place. You're not going to you know, I ended up heading in the direction that you were heading. You're not going to end up in the in that same place because you've made a change. And so that's everything we're doing the islanders to do, disinviting us, to be proactive about those changes. Because in my case, I know in my life when I'm not proactive about making changes, listening to this warning signs, what we call the whispers, then often I have to make a change because life forces to me are the I. I break down in some way, I get in some conflict, I get stuck in some way, and then I have to make the change. So why not make it proactively? Why not have a sense of humor like this ancient philosopher did? And just remember that we have agency, we don't have complete agency. We have limits in our lives, of course, but we have agency to make change in our life. So once again, folks, if you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading. We have a Facebook page. The podcast gets posted there. We'd love to hear your comments. Our list. Maybe this quote speaks to you and how it might help you. And until we gather again next week, may you be well, may be happy, may you be a peace and may you remember that you do not change direction. You may end up where you're heading.

Sara McElroy felt helpless and hopeless in her job. She felt trapped running on the hamster wheel in her CMO role. Even though it was taking a massive toll on her health and well-being, it was everything she thought she ever wanted. But, she was in for a surprise. Sara McElroy is a former hustle culture devotee, ex-chief marketing officer, the Wall Street Journal's poster girl for pandemic career burnout, and a two-time member of the Great Resignation: class of 2021 and 2022. Following a stress-induced shingles diagnosis in early 2021, Sara decided to hit the reset button on her life; she quit her hard-won CMO job and trekked to Peru to reset her frayed nervous system. When she returned, she relocated from the buzzy metropolis of Atlanta to the beach in South Florida for a new job and a fresh start. But she once again encountered deeply ingrained cultural issues in her new role, and ultimately, she walked away again. Finding herself in the company of millions of other women who also set unfulfilling jobs ablaze during the Great Resignation, she returned to her journalism roots and began to explore the stories, breaking points, and defining moments that led women to seek greater opportunity mid-pandemic. These conversations became the genesis of Raze to Rise – an organization created to amplify women's voices from the Great Resignation and inspire others to blaze new trails in their own careers. If you feel stuck or frustrated with your current career and need the courage to change direction -- Sara shares the steps in her interview:
We've all had that marketing brainstorm sitting alone at a desk. It sounds like a good idea so you bounce it off other people. everybody excitedly supports the concept. You execute it the best that you can, but it doesn't work out they way you planned. You should give up, but you've built this whole program so you double down and you keep pushing and pushing. Eventually you have to accept it wasn't as good an idea as you thought. It is always painful when you realize you have made a mistake, but the longer you pursue an idea that isn't working, the more you delay your ultimate success. Now I'm not suggesting abandoning ideas after two or three months, but if you give it your best, investing time and effort and it just doesn't click, you have to prepare to try something else.. That's where I have right now. I created a private Facebook group for the Digital Toolbox. Private, because I thought that would give it a little bit of prestige by making people feel they were joining something exclusive. But Facebook groups are a dime a dozen so after an initial burst it stagnated. As a private group, people who might have been interested in what we were talking about never saw the information in their feeds. So after several years of pushing this idea of a private Facebook group I'm accepting defeat and will try a different approach. Facebook won't let me change the private group to public, so I have launched a new group. The More than a Few Words Club is a public group for fans of show, my guests and other business owners who want to have conversations about marketing.

Marni welcomes Marc Sholes in the Life Check Yourself studio where they have an in-depth conversation about the human mind. The pair delve into existential questions we all have. Why do we act a certain way in our relationships? Why do we get obsessive when the person we like takes days to respond to a text? Why do we form certain patterns and how can we break them? Marc, who has over 25 years of experience in psychotherapy, is the author of “Reset Your Romantic GPS: Why You Steer Toward the Wrong Partners and How to Change Direction for the Better.” The psychoanalyst, and licensed clinical social worker who has helped individuals, couples and groups to get to the root of their ailments. In this episode, Marc and Marni look into attachment theory, and the different attachment styles that we develop as infants, and then take with us into our adult relationships. They discuss the tools and methods used in our road to recovery, and the sense self-empowerment that comes from standing still and being comfortable in the discomfort of our feelings. What's attachment theory all about? Discomfort is not your enemy It all starts in infancy Your attachment style is your love language Can another person make you whole? How to change the patterns that don't serve you Internalized Feelings of Security are Your Lifejacket [04:04] Marc paints a picture of two infants; one born having had their needs met consistently and the other having had their feelings ignored or neglected by their primary caretaker. It is at that stage that our attachment styles begin to take shape. The successful psychoanalyst explains that an infant who's had their feelings responded to in a healthy fashion, will go on to internalize a sense of security and safety. And that internalized system is what they will go on to use in their interaction with the outside world. In the opposite scenario, the child will grow up with the crutch of constantly trying to create a bond with a partner, as a result of having had to do that as an infant. How an infant is responded to by their primary caretaker influences their own self-regulation and self-validation as an adult. Those of us with insecure attachment styles have had to find security outside of ourselves, whereas those with secure attachment styles have learned to internalize those feelings. That person becomes much more preoccupied with the other; how do I meet the other's needs? What can I do to accommodate the other so the other will love me? Marnie adds that the reason why people with insecure attachment styles stay in unhealthy relationships is because it feels familiar. It mimics those first few years as an infant where needs weren't being met, and where the child felt insecure. Chasing Chemistry is an addiction [13:27] In a relationship, you're chasing that chemistry high. You're pulled back again towards an intensity that you felt at a certain moment with your partner, and you're willing to do anything to feel it again. The insecure individuals want to hold on to that feeling even though, in essence, it's fleeing. In attempt to not lose the intensity with their partner, they start accommodating them, at times to their own detriment. Feelings from infancy resurface as they struggle to keep that connection with their partner. Their value has been what they can do for the other, not what the other can do for them. Change the coordinates on your Romantic GPS [16:45] All hope is not lost, though. An insecure attachment style can be altered, but it takes work. Marc divulges that the key to change that insecurity is to actively train yourself to become your own regulator, rather than being dependent on your significant other. Through mindful meditation, you'll manage to change your attachment style. Only by being able to sit with your feelings, and embrace them, can you then begin to accept that it's actually okay to have them. Discomfort is something that the experienced psychiatrist invites people to feel. Because discomfort is a healthy choice; it means that we're putting in the work. It's a way of realizing that you have it in you to be able to be that regulator and that the other doesn't have to be that regulator - you have it inside of you. Another practice that Marc encourages is taking note of your cravings. Understanding why you're hankering for a certain food, and at what particular moment that manifests, helps with the why. It's not about abstaining from your cravings but about understanding them and bringing them into your consciousness. Once you're aware of why you're making a certain choice, you can begin to change it. The questions you're asking yourself at this point are empowering. Elections in Italy will bring to power a political party with roots in Italian fascism. We talk about what this reveals about the Italian electorate and how this could catalyze a change in the direction of the European Union. Western media have focused on Russians protesting Vladimir Putin's military draft, but the Russian president retains significant power. He brandished it even this week by annexing major sections of Ukraine into Russia. Protests in Iran continue, but are they enough to threaten the Iranian regime? We also talk about the devastation of Hurricane Ian, the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipeline, financial crisis in the United Kingdom, a joint naval patrol between Russia and China, Iran buying land in Venezuela, and a plea for America to take practical steps to alleviate the world energy crisis. Who is Quentin Michael?Quentin grew up in Minnesota. He was a shy, soft-spoken kid with a mind that went a mile a minute. (later being diagnosed with ADHD)In 2012, he moved to Wisconsin to start university and found his interests sparked in the tech industry. He attempted to create his first startup that was in the virtual reality space but failed within the next 6 months. He later realized he'd entered the space to just "look cool" and not for the right reasons. Despite the failed attempt, he still kept an eye on the possibility of entrepreneurship as he finished his bachelor's.Two years after graduating he found himself in a bad situation, mentally and financially. He'd hit rock bottom. Over the next 6-9 months he dabbled with different platforms and soon found himself on Linkedin where he become one of Linkedin's first video creators. After beginning to find success on the platform, he started the marketing agency, Urban MisFit Ventures. Over the next few years his company, following, and opportunities grew. Linkedin had changed his life. He found himself on Wisconsin's 25 under 25 and speaking at events like VidCon and TEDx. The opportunity and income came at a cost though, a TON of his time. Micheal found himself working 80+ hours a week with his life revolving around his business. After 2 1/2 years of excitement, things came crashing down in 2020. He shut his company down, COVID hit, & his younger brother passed changing his life perspective forever. Everything changed.Over the next year, things slowed down as he attempted to find his next moves. He dabbled in consulting and podcasting. After that year of reflection, in January 2021, he left entrepreneurship momentarily and become the Marketing Lead at, Lewis Howe's, Greatness Media. After a year, he found himself back into the constant working cycle and felt his work at Greatness Media had run its course despite being a wonderful experience. This brings us to today where Quentin Michael3 aims to live more and work less.He is focused on:Running experiments. Both business and social.
