This month we visit with masterful interviewer Ansley Jemison (Seneca Nation, Wolf Clan), host of the Original Peoples Podcast (OPP). We loved that the “Eastern Door” show (TAD podcast from Kanyen'kehà:ka territory) is crossing over with Ansley's excellent “Western Door” show. We had a rollicking time covering culture, art, traditional teachings, clans, while exploring sensitive topics that lots of people shy away from. Ansley is great at opening conversations in a safe and thoughtful way. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Welcome back B-oo's Crew! This week we head to Northport, AL to visit a once all African American mental hospital. Our story takes place in a time before desegregation. Being a place to relieve the over crowding at Bryce hospital, one can only imagine the horrors that took place here. When a reporter made a visit inside the walls, he likened it to Nazi concentration camps; Finally closing its doors around 1977 and being part of the lawsuit that brought about the Wyatt standards act, This hospital lays empty...or does it? It seems while nature has began to claim the land back, those who suffered at the hands of the state may just still be there. Get ready B-oo's Crew, this one will surely be a crazy ride!Do you have a story you'd like read or played on the show? For more than 50 years, Joe Feddersen (Colville) and G. Peter Jemison (Seneca, Heron Clan) have been creating works that extend Native heritage and enrich the stories told by American art. Through an ambidextrous approach to craft and figuration, Feddersen finds consonance between contemporary life and traditional forms and iconographies, while Jemison highlights the continuities and ruptures of Native experiences in our shared spaces. With wide-ranging community education, preservation, and advocacy projects, Feddersen and Jemison show that new paths emerge from the old. Clip of the Week-"You Must Be Born Again" Brother Ben Jernigan Bro. Ben Jernigan at Jemison feast meeting in 1980 preached a powerful sermon calling for sinners to turn their lives over to Christ. Reading about the death that we experience through the flesh and through sin, he contrasts the eternal life that we inherit when we are sanctified. I hope that this sermon blesses you like it blessed me. Isaiah 55:6-7 “Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.” Bro. Most big box stores do not have plants for fall gardening which is crazy to us because you can still gardening well into the fall and even the winter depending on where you are located, many of those people in warmer climates (like Florida) can almost garden year-round. So let's talk planning a fall garden. What Vegetables Can Be Planted In The Fall? We've got plenty of vegetable suggestions for you that are suited for the fall garden, with planting dates that run from late summer through fall itself. Here are just a few of Hoss favorites for fall growing! Arugula, beets, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, collards, garlic, kale, mustard greens, kohlrabi, lettuce, onions, peas, radishes, spinach, celery, cilantro, and swiss chard. You can also add in some cool season flowers such as, Calendula Prince Mix! When Should I Plant Fall Vegetables? | Planning A Fall Garden Obviously the best time for planting depends on the area where you live and what you plan to grow. The secret to fall vegetable gardening success is planning your harvest backwards. You will want to start with your frost date for the fall in your area. Then find out the number of days that you will need before you can harvest your fall vegetables. You can usually find that number on the back of the seed packet. Days to maturity. This will be different for direct seeds versus transplants. How Should You Prepare For Your Fall Garden? Prepare your garden for the fall by making room for all the new plants that you are about to harvest. Start by ripping out all of the plants that you have already harvested, as well as plants that are no longer performing well (like tomatoes that have succumbed to disease or peas that have been burned by the sun). At this time, you will always want to pull up any weeds from the beds so that they don't try to steal nutrients and moisture from your fall vegetables. Good Dirt: Conversations with Leaders in Real Estate & Beyond
Arthur Jemison – City of Boston/Boston Planning & Development Agency Arthur Jemison is the City of Boston's Chief of Planning and the Director of the Boston Planning and Development Agency (‘BPDA'). A nationally respected public-private development leader, Chief Jemison came “back” to the City of Boston with 28 years of planning and affordable housing expertise, working with community members to create equitable places in Detroit, MI, Washington D.C. and Boston, MA. Most recently, Jemison served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), where he led the Office of Community Planning and Development (CPD) and served as the policy lead and HUD partner for American Cities, Counties, States, and other local units of government. Jemison joined HUD from the City of Detroit, where he was Group Executive for Planning, Housing & Development, leading the City's efforts toward equitable growth. In early 2014, Jemison was recruited to lead the Housing & Revitalization Department for the City of Detroit, to assist as the City recovered from bankruptcy. In that capacity, Jemison led strategy, deployment and management of municipal housing policy and HUD entitlement funding. Before going to Detroit, Jemison held leadership positions at the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) for Massachusetts under Governor Deval Patrick. Prior to that, he held a variety of public and private-sector positions, including service at Massachusetts Port Authority, Boston Housing Authority, the then-Boston Redevelopment Authority, and in private development work at GLC Development Resources, as well as in the District of Columbia.Jemison has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He also holds a Master of City Planning degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was a Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Fellow. Jemison is also a 2021 Spirit of Detroit Award winner, a 2016 Michigan Chronicle Men / Women of Excellence awardee, and a member of the team recognized with the 2013 Robert Larson Public Policy Award for Workforce Housing from the Urban Land Institute, on behalf of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Our conversation with Chief Jemison starts with his familial roots and upbringing in Detroit, MI and Amherst, MA and his college days at UMass Amherst, where he was first introduced to economics, urban planning and public policy. Through a fellowship opportunity for under-represented students, Arthur blazed his trail to MIT where he earned his Master in City Planning (MCP) degree, and turned his focus to real estate's private sector, working initially in Miami for Arthur Andersen doing development feasibility consulting before following his calling in the public domain. Much of our discussion with Chief Jemison, not surprisingly, focuses on the Boston market and his important work as the Director of the BPDA and as the City's Planning Chief. We enjoyed this candid discussion, in which Arthur stressed the importance of collaboration and cooperation between his team and the development community. We were encouraged by this discussion and hope you enjoy it as much as we did.For more information on the Boston Planning & Development Agency, please visit http://www.bostonplans.org/Mentioned in this Episode:What Arthur's Reading Right now: Small Mercies (Dennis Lehane)New Book Alert: Look for Me There (Luke Russert)Required RE Reading: The Reichmanns: Family, Faith, Fortune, and the Empire of Olympia & YorkTom Greeleytom.greeley@nmrk.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/thomasgreeley/Mike Greeleymichael.greeley@nmrk.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/michaelgreeley1/
In the fall of 1743 (33 years before the birth of the United States of America), somewhere on the stormy, turbulent Atlantic Ocean, a child was born. Thomas and Jane Jemison were blessed with a beautiful baby girl, while aboard the ship, William & Mary. She would be named Mary and Mary would embark on a separate journey… a voyage, in and of itself, that commenced as soon as their vessel docked in Philadelphia and the Jemison family stepped foot in the New World. Mary Jemison's voyage, in many ways, traces the course of colonial and pre-colonial America. Her trials and tribulations, her victories, and her tragedies are shared by the settlers rooted in the colonies during this time. It is an incredible story of survival, an inspirational story of overcoming obstacles and pioneering a life that is both fruitful and fulfilling.
