Ed Conroy, a Toronto-based cultural historian and the creator of Retrontario, joins the show for a look back at the 40th anniversary of Pay TV in Canada. On February 1, 1983, Canada's first Pay TV channels arrived on the airwaves to great fanfare: Competing movie services First Choice and Superchannel offered subscribers blockbuster movies "uncut and commercial free" while the more refined C Channel offered more highbrow fare: world cinema, opera, theatre and concerts. First Choice distinguished itself from the other services by offering adult entertainment (softcore nudity on the soap opera “Loving Friends and Perfect Couples” and late night Playboy Channel programming, co-productions that controversially qualified as Canadian Content). But Pay TV was not a success out of the gate, leading to C Channel going off the air within weeks and First Choice eventually having to merge with Superchannel (Canadians know the service now as Crave). Ed and I take the listener on a tour of this chapter in television history, when uncut movies in your home were a novelty in the days before VCRs were commonplace, and the thrill of being exposed to exciting illicit programming, bringing Canadian teenagers in the eighties an at-home crash course in high and low film culture. RIP Noah Cowan, veteran programmer and artistic director for TIFF who brought us Midnight Madness at the Festival and whose father Edgar brought us C Channel, a service ahead of its time. Long before foreign TV shows were neatly catalogued and sourced on streaming sites and Wikipedia pages, they were haphazardly dumped onto the schedules of provincial educational broadcasters such as TVO and Knowledge Network and aired as a continuous fever dream with little context or reasoning. One such show was Fables of the Green Forest, the proto-World Masterpiece Theatre anime based on the works of Thornton W. Burgess that aired in its entirety only in certain Canadian provinces. It may also be the anime series most deeply engraved into the minds of Gen X Ontarians due to its excessive overplay on TVO in the 1980s. The Quebecois dub, aired on Radio-Canada, also had a very unique localized flavour that wasn't found in other shows. Awesome guests Ed Conroy (creator of Retrontario) and Etienne Desilets-Trempe (writer of Frivolesque) try to illustrate the dark, vintage madness that characterizes this series for so many.

CW: Sexual abuse When it comes to the alien abduction phenomenon, no two figures have played a greater roll in its shaping than Budd Hopkins and David Jacobs. And shaping, I think, is the perfect word, because, as we've covered on this series, before this point, abductions were very different animals. It was through Hopkins that it became an intergenerational phenomenon, that its captors all looked the same with slight variations, and that those captors were lying, deceiving assholes with an agenda that could be gleaned through hypnosis. Alien-human hybrids dominated the field because of Budd Hopkins. In short, the phenomenon that you know as alien abductions is the product of Budd Hopkins' research, and the proliferation of that research from other figures, like David Jacobs. In an interview with Ed Conroy, for his book Report on Communion, Whitley Strieber had this to say about Hopkins and Jacobs: "'He and Jacobs are censoring the experiences of people with visitor experiences in order to fit them into a theory they have about extraterrestrials,' Strieber told me in a December 1988 interview. 'If some of the experiences in people's lives don't fit with their theories, they just exclude them. In my books, I have maintained an account of the experiences which is very close to how strange and bizarre they really are. That is why my books have gotten such a tremendous response, while Intruders was a failure.'" On this episode I dive into the work of these two figures, and expose the flaws and abuses that is contained within. ALIEN VISITATION: Whitley Strieber's real-life story behind the best-selling book Communion, anal probes, the Chris Dawson case and more!   You don't have long left to VOTE FOR US AT THE BRITISH PODCAST AWARDS: https://www.britishpodcastawards.com/vote Hello, Eavesdroppers! After a quick update on the Chris Dawson / Lynette Dawson case that has Australia gripped right now, Geordie's in the hot seat this week, talking all about the author Whitely Strieber! You might know some of his work – The Hunger, The Wolfen – but what Geordie's talking about today is his classic NON-FICTION book called Communion… You know the one… it's got that picture of an alien on the cover with big feline eyes and a long pointy face. Well, if not, you're going to hear all about it along with a few theories as to how this real-life story could possibly be a real-life story…  So on Boxing Day in 1985, Whitley Strieber says he was visited by aliens… The result? The book Communion! Was Whitely Strieber's cabin really visited by aliens? Did he and his family actually see aliens that night? What are the greys? Are Whitley Strieber's hypnosis sessions recovered memories or is it all just fiction? Had he been experimented on by aliens? Did he attend Alien School? Is he mad? What's all this about lost time? Are we the lab rats? Was it all just a big PR stunt? You decide! We hope you enjoy this week's episode – and wherever you are, whatever you do, just keep Eavesdroppin'! *Disclaimer: We don't claim to have any factual info about anything ever, soooooorrrrrryyyyyyyy Get in touch with your stories and listen, like, subscribe, share etc…  Or email us at hello@eavesdroppinpodcast.com    Listen here: www.eavesdroppinpodcast.com Or here: https://podfollow.com/1539144364 WE ARE NOW ON PATREON :) Want to show your favourite podcast some love by throwing a coin into the tip jar?
