Noticing the small wins you've gained can have a big impact on your practice as an artist. That insight was what I loved hearing about most in my conversation with Leslie Rae Cannon, an artist from Atlanta, Georgia and a member of Growth Studio. She graduated with an art degree from Presbyterian College, and now as an empty-nester has traded in carpools and play-dates for canvases and paint brushes. In this episode of The Savvy Painter podcast, you'll learn how small wins have helped Leslie grow as an artist, from overcoming her fear of putting her work out there to becoming really selective about which gallery she allows to show her art. You'll also hear about the importance of developing a supportive community and how that's helped Leslie recognize her own progress.1:34 - A sense of who Leslie is and what she's discovered about herself as an artist5:56 - The process Leslie goes through when working on or in between projects8:56 - How Leslie felt inspired to create her hydrangea collection and allowed herself more freedom in painting them15:25 - Leslie's transition from being really excited about her work to wanting to show her work19:37 - One way that people have been drawn to some of Leslie's paintings and a recent decision that saved her from sitting in frustration26:10 - How Leslie has evolved into the habit of consistently putting her toe in the water to get her work into a gallery33:50 - The impact of Leslie's belief in the law of attraction and manifestation on her success39:17 - How Leslie has gotten into the practice of noticing her small wins41:26 - How Leslie shifted from trying to get in front of as many people as possible to being able to pick and choose her shows47:37 - What today's Leslie would tell herself (or other artists) if this were three or four years agoMentioned in How Small Wins Impact Your Art Practice with Leslie Rae CannonLeslie Rae Cannon Art | InstagramBig Magic by Elizabeth GilbertHow to Confidently Price Your Artwork Without OverwhelmHow to Stop Procrastinating and Finally Price Your ArtworkJulep Gallery | Dunwoody GalleryJoin Growth StudioSupport the show

Dr. Kendra Y. Hamilton's Romancing the Gullah in the Age of Porgy and Bess (University of Georgia Press, 2024) is a literary and cultural history of the Gullah Geechee Coast, a four-state area that is one of only a handful of places that can truly be said to be the “cradle of Black culture” in the United States. An African American ethnic group who predominantly live in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida within the coastal plain and the Sea Islands, the Gullah people have preserved a significant influence of Africanisms because of their unique geographic isolation. This book seeks to fill a significant cultural gap in Gullah history. While there is a veritable industry of books on literary Charleston and on the Lowcountry, along with a plenitude of Gullah-inspired studies in history, anthropology, linguistics, folklore, and religion, there has never been a comprehensive study of the region's literary influence, particularly in the years of the Harlem and Charleston Renaissance. By giving voice to artists and culture makers, uncovering buried histories, and revealing secret cross-racial connections amid official practices of Jim Crow, Hamilton sheds new light on an incomplete cultural history. Dr. Kendra Y. Hamilton is an associate professor of English and Director of Southern Studies at Presbyterian College. Learn more about your ad choices. But soon, he is pulled back in to crack a code hidden in an ancient manuscript in order to foil a terrorist plot. In the meantime, Renie Ellis, a lawyer in the small town he's moved to gets caught up in his dilemma and falls in love with him, not realizing he killed her fiancé by accident. What will she do when she finds out who Adam really is? The heist of a famous Codex from the British Museum, Papal intrigue in the Vatican, both Sicilian and Russian Mafia, and a US President who knows more than she admits all play key roles in a story that keeps the reader guessing until the end, a conclusion that no one sees coming. From Rome to Jerusalem, from Egypt's Mt. Sinai to Tennessee's Smoky Mountains, the characters scramble for their lives, racing the clock to prevent an international disaster. Our conversation delves into AIM's collaborative partnerships with various organizations and the development of essential resources aimed at breaking down barriers to disability inclusion within medical education. Additionally, we shed light on the personal motivations driving AIM's members, emphasizing the significance of shared learning experiences and the collective desire for increased accessibility. By delving into the principles of mutual learning and community solidarity, we underscore the empowering paths taken by students navigating their disability journeys and stress the importance of challenging biases entrenched within the medical field. Our discussion extends beyond individual experiences to explore the broader societal implications and ethical imperatives surrounding disability inclusion. Erik Bakich talks Clemson's 8-2 victory over Presbyterian College
Providence enables us to trust that history is headed somewhere, might not today be visible to sight. but faith will give way to sight if you wait on God. It's about trusting in promises that have yet to come true and I've always wondered about the truth character of a promise. It's true because you trust the person who made it but it isn't true as a fact yet. And so you're waiting for its fulfillment, but you know enough to trust the promise maker to wait on a fulfillment. And I think that's where John, you know, it's unbelief to give up that hope. You know, we are as one American preacher says: We're prisoners of hope. We're obliged to hope in a very good way to see how the grace of God will emerge here too.---Listen to Rev. Dr. Richard Topping (President of Vancouver School of Theology) share with Rev. Dr. Andrew Stirling (Ambassador, Canadian Bible Society) about the influences that helped shape his faith journey. Recorded as part of the series, The Word for Life: When Scripture Comes Alive, Richard talks about how the Bible is key to our understanding of God, how it stokes our imagination to help us see what we can't see fully yet, and how looking through the lens of Scripture frames our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. Richard Topping received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies from University of Waterloo, a Master of Arts in Theology from St. Michael's University in the Toronto School of Theology and a Doctor of Philosophy in Theology from Wycliffe College, where his thesis Director was Professor John Webster. His doctoral thesis focused on theological interpretation of scripture in Hans Frei and Karl Barth.Richard was Minister at Zion and Knox Presbyterian Churches in Muskoka, Ontario from 1993-1996 and at the Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul in Montreal, Quebec, where he was Assistant Minister from 1997-1999 and Senior Minister from 2000-2009. He has written or coauthored a number of documents for the Presbyterian Church in Canada, including a Catechism for Today (2008) and Together in Ministry (2006). He currently serves on the Church Doctrine Committee for the national church.Richard taught at Presbyterian College (2001-2009) in the Montreal School of Theology at McGill University in the areas of Preaching, Pastoral theology, Introduction to Ministry and Church, Ministry and Sacraments.Richard holds the St. Andrew's Hall Chair in Studies in the Reformed Tradition and has been the Principal of Vancouver School of Theology since 2013. He teaches in the areas of Introduction to Theology, Reformation History, Christian Spirituality and Reformed Theology of the 19th and Twentieth Century. He has published in the areas of theological hermeneutics, homiletics, philosophy of religion, systematic theology and the theologies of John Calvin and Karl Barth. He has edited a collection of essays, for the 500th anniversary of the birth of John Calvin, Calvin @500, and is currently editing a series of faculty essays with Profs. Ashley Moyse and Harry Maier, Theological Ten Percent, which are an introduction to theological study. With another poetry show coming up on August 5th at Hobcaw Brewing Company in Mt. Pleasant, it might shock you to know that poetry wasn't on Mr. Enlightenment's radar growing up in Walterboro, SC. Football was though! A standout high school football career that included a state championship led to an opportunity to continue playing at Division II Presbyterian College. He talks about navigating the adjustment period to find success at that level as well. It was also at Presbyterian College where he discovered that poetry could be more than the traditional forms that we're taught in school. As a hip-hop aficionado who had grown up freestyling on bus rides to football games, Mr. Enlightenment tells me about the realization that he could take that knowledge and skillset to create his own poems. We also talk about how he made the leap from writing poems for a class to sharing them with others. He explains the vulnerability in doing that, especially when it comes to performing, and how he learned to deal with all the critiques that come with sharing something you created with the world. Mr. Enlightenment also tells me the story behind his stage name, why it's important to him to have sports references in his poems, and how creative writing is a great tool for anyone who needs to get something off their chest! We all remember Colby from the 2021 season at Duke. Colby transferred in from Presbyterian College and, after being a beast on special teams, went on to be a part of a championship team in the Finnish Maple League and was named the MVP of the championship game. Colby will play for the Albany Empire this coming season as he continues to pursue his dream of getting to the NFL. In addition to these topics, Colby and I discuss the 2021 season and how Coach Elko (and Coach Feeley) turned things around this year. You'll also hear from Future Ben as he reads Colby's prediction for Duke's bowl game. This was a great talk with a memorable Blue Devil. Now, let me conclude by saying that there will be a discussion about the team meeting with law enforcement during the 2021 season and the effect it had on the team. This podcast is not set up to fully and completely engage in a discussion about use of force by law enforcement, so please don't consider this to serve as that discussion. The level of detail that topic requires is well beyond the scope of this podcast. I hope you enjoy the interview. Trustees and Presidents- Opportunities and Challenges In Intercollegiate Athletics
“Higher education institutions across the country are contending with significant headwinds. However, with a shared sense of purpose, a creative spirit, and sustained focus, PC can emerge stronger than ever and build a tremendous foundation for the next 140 years.” That was a part of the inauguration speech that Matthew vandenBerg gave at Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina in Fall 2021. His vision for Presbyterian is slowly taking shape, but it has come with both highs and lows. Taking office in February 2021 (in the middle of the pandemic), I wanted to ask Matt to take us behind the scenes of a first time president with a terrific track record in both fundraising and friend raising at his previous stops. Like so many presidents, he was confronted by challenges from the moment he walked on campus, and, like so many times, athletics is a part of that. In our conversation, he walks us through a very delicate situation that emerged on campus in Spring 2022, when the Howard University women's lacrosse team arrived on campus and was verbally mistreated by a few members of the student population. It gravitated into a national story, and it was clearly a moment that many presidents face in putting espoused values into action. We talk about Presbyterian as a very small Division I campus, with non-scholarship football, trying to manage success and expectations for athletes, coaches and administrators in the fast changing world of NCAA Division I sports. It's a great conversation for anyone who has ever thought about becoming a small college president. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/karen-weaver/message
