DescriptionWhat is the interplay, in Catholic preaching and teaching, between the natural gifts of communication and charisma and God's supernatural power moving through the speaker and audience. How do these things complement (or cancel out) the other? In my far-reaching and fascinating conversation with Deacon Keith Strohm, we jump right into what makes for good and bad homilies, how he prepares for preaching at the Liturgy, and the role of the Spirit and Spiritual Warfare in teaching and preaching. Deacon Keith Strohm is the former Director of the Office for the New Evangelization and a deacon for the Archdiocese of Chicago. A well-known international and conference keynote speaker, he has helped tens of thousands of men and women hear the Gospel message and encounter the mercy, love and power of Jesus ChristHe has extensive experience in creating and sustaining processes and programs of evangelization and formation at the group, parish and diocesan level that focus on the making, maturation and missioning of disciples of Jesus Christ. When retired preschool owner Colleen Strohm and her husband moved to Maupin after their retirement, they found a vibrant community, but no local newspaper. Strohm says she tried to talk others into starting one, but after no one took her up on it, she finally realized she’d need to do it herself. She and her husband launched “The South Wasco Times” in October. Strohm is the publisher, editor and reporter for the monthly print paper. Her husband, retired Portland State University professor Doug Lowell, takes photographs and manages advertising sales and distribution. The Times is not online, and Strohm says she has no plans to change that — part of the appeal is that the paper is printed… on paper. She and Lowell join us from Maupin to talk about the community response, what readers can expect from the Dec. 1 edition, and how they plan to keep the endeavor sustainable into the future.

Well, when you start a business, that's not exactly how that works out. The business is the greatest teacher." - Andrew Strohm   7:38 "We realized that we needed to perhaps challenge more of our assumptions to figure out what the best way to maximize was." - Andrew Strohm   14:35 "That whole thing of guaranteed results is fascinating..." - Brian Keith   16:16 "That's the perfect client, because they've come in here and given all of the long term information you need. Now you're just going to listen, absorb that, and then show them the value of your program in light of their needs." - Andrew Strohm   19:06 "They'll come and say 'I'm having difficulty selling my services or my product.' And I ask them, "Well, what's it worth?" And they normally give me a short term perspective." - Andrew Strohm   20:49 "Is that your good life? And if it's not your good life, how much longer are you planning on doing that?" - Brian Keith   23:09 "It is incredibly worthwhile and pays dividends for the rest of your life to have a professional look at you and say, 'Why are you doing that?' It sucks!" - Brian Keith

Returning guest John Strohm (Blake Babies, Lemonheads, Antenna) has a strong personal connection to the record he chose to discuss, the stunning 1995 debut of Minneapolis band Polara. As a close friend of the bands founder, beloved musician/producer Ed Ackerson who sadly succumbed to pancreatic cancer in 2019 at the age of 54, John was right there during the recording sessions lending a musical hand where needed. He brings deep insight into the creation of this impressive amalgamation of blissful pop melody and fuzzed-out psychedelia.  Songs featured in this episode: Girl In A Box - Blake Babies; Out - Lemonheads; Out There - Blake Babies; I'm Not Sayin' - Replacements; Counting Down - Polara; The National Anthem - Radiohead; Like The Poison - The 27 Various; When You Sleep - My Bloody Valentine; Allay - Polara, Duel - Swervedriver; Source Of Light, Listening Now, Taupe, Avenue E - Polara; Sunlight Bathed The Golden Glow - Felt; Anniversary 6 - Polara, Little Fury Things - Dinosaur Jr; One Foot - Polara; E-Bow The Letter - REM; A+B=Y, State, Letterbomb - Polara; Live Forever - Noel Gallagher; A+B=Y - John Strohm

They exchange information and familiarize themselves with each other. Information is exchanged about Shank's current bounty, the other odd happenings on Granzia, and catch the Guild members on what happened on Zechs' first job. They agree to taking the night to rest and revel. Just as Strohm pours out drinks for everyone, Inia and Gojun bring Zechs upstairs for a debrief, as is standard protocol. Common Sense Institute (CSI) has partnered with several local organizations and leaders to conduct a three-phase project to understand the many challenges and types of homelessness. Through a multi-faceted approach, CSI and its partners hope to identify the systemic issues that contribute to a person's experience with homelessness and find the network of people and organizations working to make change. Bringing clarity and identifying the leverage points in these systems will support all who seek to tackle this challenge by providing critical information about where to invest their time, energy, and money to address the homelessness crisis. One of the report's authors, Brenda Bautsch Dickhoner, Ph.D, along with CSI President Kristin Strohm, join our Host and Chairman Earl Wright to discuss Phase 1 of the report, which can be found here.  Homelessness remains a pressing issue for the Metro Denver region. COVID-19 increased the visibility of the issue with shelters closing due the pandemic and greater numbers of individuals experiencing homelessness outdoors. Data indicates that the longer people are unsheltered, the more challenging rehousing becomes. Strategies to improve early intervention, rapid rehousing, and permanent supportive housing are the path forward, as they mitigate the risks to the individual and society of long-term homelessness. Such strategies must also involve wraparound services to help some individuals overcome substance abuse, mental illness, and other trauma. The complexity of the ecosystem surrounding homelessness and the scarcity of affordable housing in the region makes implementing these strategies immensely difficult.
