UNCW took a grown-man win at Charleston and kept building on it this past week, turning in a dominant defensive performance to beat Elon before surviving a heavyweight slugfest with Hofstra on Saturday. The Seahawks are playing their most consistent, toughest brand of basketball at the time it matters most. That's pretty cool!
We've hit the second half of February, and the only undefeated Division-I men's basketball team is Miami (OH). UNCW had a big week with wins at Charleston and over Hofstra to surge into first in the CAA. Santa Clara falls to Gonzaga. Utah State destroys Memphis, and Belmont storms back to defeat Murray State. Ian Sacks and Isaac Bourne discuss it all on this week's episode.

Zach Haines has been an assistant coach at UNCW and Denver, but all he's done since becoming the head coach at High Point University is win. HPU also sent 3 players to the 2025 MLS College Combine and had 3 players drafted in 2026 MLS SuperDraft! We sat down with Zach to recap the 2025 season, talk about the proposed two-semester season and more!!
What if the difference between becoming average and becoming exceptional comes down to who you choose to learn from and the courage to ask for mentorship? In today's episode of The Ripple Effect Podcast, I'm truly honored and excited to interview John A. Dailey, a Marine badass and one of the most compelling voices I've ever had the privilege of interviewing. John joined the Marines at just seventeen and went on to serve more than twenty years, spending most of that time in special operations with tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. John shares powerful leadership lessons forged through real-world experience, including how to earn respect, how to balance mission accomplishment with taking care of your people, and why mentorship is one of the most underrated keys to growth in both military and civilian life. We also talk about mental toughness, grit, and what it really means to lead when the stakes are high. John earned his MFA in creative writing from UNCW in 2018 and shares his insights through his weekly newsletter, Walking Point, along with his thoughts on building toughness through fitness at RTFU.substack.com. UNCW got back to Seahawk Basketball on Monday night in Charleston, winning their sixth straight game over the rival Cougars. Enjoy!
Thursday night really sucked, and watching it for a second time only made things worse. The Seahawks didn't much resemble the team we've gotten to know this season, as they veered away from their trademark physicality, toughness, and ability to make the big play when it mattered. Now, the Seahawks head south to renew their rivalry with a Charleston team that has flipped their season over the past two months, surging to the top of the league thanks to Jlynn Counter and two excellent big men. UNCW always bounces back in this spot -- how will they do it on Monday night?
Another year, another grown-man game against Towson. This time around, though, UNCW came out on top thanks to a balanced team effort, and hit the CAA halfway point at 8-1 despite having played six games on the road. Bill and Brant break down the offensive wrinkles the Seahawks worked in against a big, physical Towson front line, then get into Thursday night's big matchup with William & Mary at Trask. Also, a look around the CAA, the inevitable coaching carousel discussion, Gavin Walsh's status, and whether UNCW has a shot at an at-large bid.
Coach Heaney is an anomaly in today's college soccer landscape... in a great way. With 25 years at UNCW, over 200+ wins, the loyalty and accolades continue to stand out and stack up! Check out our chat featuring his pathway from Newcastle Upon Tyne, to the States, and his experience and expectations running this CAA program! The Seahawks learned a tough lesson last week in Williamsburg, where another first-half deficit proved too deep to dig out of against a good William & Mary team. The Tribe mixed their defenses early and got UNCW out of character before a second-half rally. It seemed there was a lesson in the loss, though, as the Hawks showed up with their best all-around performance in weeks in a tough win at Hampton behind an incredible performance from Greedy Williams, another big one from Patrick Wessler, and nice contributions from Makoi Mabor and Jahnathan Lamothe. Now, UNCW heads north to meet rival Towson in a pivotal game for the Tigers, who sit at 4-4 after recovering from a slow start in CAA play.
Comebacks are the theme of the week as Perchast returns from a month-long hiatus! Fortunately for us, the Seahawks made this an easy episode with Saturday's 24-point rally to stun Stony Brook, creating a moment for the history books in the process. - UNCW is 16-2 and 5-0 in conference play despite injuries, illness, and some inconsistency. How lucky are we? - What's going on with the massive disparity between first and second half performances? - Patrick Wessler has grown in a big way over the past several weeks. How'd he do it? - Nolan Hodge, absolute killer. - These dudes just find a way, and man, is it a beautiful thing.
It's been a couple of hours now, and it's still not entirely clear how UNCW rallied to beat Marshall. In their first close game of the season, the Seahawks found a way to steal a gritty win on a night they didn't play their best on either end of the floor. Patrick Wessler's career-best performance set the tone, while Nolan Hodge came up clutch down the stretch, too. What a night.
It was an abundant Thanksgiving for the Seahawks, who completely dominated five of the six halves of basketball it played in the Live Oak Bank Holiday Classic. There were all sorts of positives for UNCW, ranging from lockdown defense to sharing the basketball and excellent individual performances from Patrick Wessler, Madison Durr, and more. Bill and Brant touch on all of those interesting nuggets, as well as what we can expect against a very good, uptempo Marshall squad on Wednesday night in Trask.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times; Charles Dickens wrote that about UNCW's performance at Kent State, supposedly. Uncle Bill and Brant are on this mic this week for a nuanced discussion of the Seahawks' loss in Ohio on Monday night, which saw UNCW fall behind by 22 points before getting things in gear and fighting back. After a no-good, very bad start, there was A LOT to like about what we saw from the mildly shorthanded Seahawks, including strong outings from Pat Wessler and Nolan Hodge, Greedy Williams' asserting himself at a critical point, and the Hawks' fortitude to fight back against a REALLY good opponent. Then, a look ahead to Saturday night's matchup with an uptempo squad from USC Upstate, led by Karmani Gregory and Carmelo Adkins. Will this one be a little easier, or similar to last year's battle in Spartanburg?
We're grateful for the opportunity to talk with one of the all-time great Seahawks, Craig Ponder! Now an assistant coach at UNCW, Ponder played a pivotal role in rebuilding the program under Coach Kevin Keatts, ultimately closing his career with a CAA championship in 2016 before pushing Duke to the wire in the NCAA Tournament. Since returning to Wilmington as a coach in 2020, Ponder has been on the sideline for the winningest period in UNCW basketball history, and last March, became the first Seahawk to win a title as a player and a member of the coaching staff.
With college hoops preview season in full swing, we're excited to welcome Hofstra senior Dylan Brett! Dylan, a play-by-play announcer and aspiring journalist, put together a 77-page CAA preview that contains more than 30,000 words on every player, coach, and storyline in the league. Along with his sharing his detailed analysis on UNCW and several other teams around the conference, he also explained the process of putting together such a massive project while trying to balance his final year of college and radio work. Great conversation with a really talented young fella who is headed for big things! Catch him talking CAA hoops all season long on Twitter at @dylanbrxtt. Training camp is over and it's almost time to set up the tailgates, so naturally, we're talking hoops on this lovely August evening! With the CAA dropping the full schedule for the 2025-26 season, we've now got a full picture of the road to DC and UNCW's unprecedented 20-game home schedule. The Seahawks will have to find their footing on the road in January, but things set up nicely for Trask to be rocking in February. With 60 days until the first exhibition game, a few thoughts on the roster, too!
Send us a textOrder Reframe the Moment: Choose Your Zen and 'Twas the Night Before Move In NOW!!Thank you so much for being here!!This week officially marks my 20th year teaching at UNCW. I sat in my annual faculty retreat meeting the other day, and I've realized that I have somehow become a village elder. If I do even more math, it's my 25th year teaching because I taught one year at Ohio State during my Masters program, three years at Kent State during my doctoral program, and one year at Toledo as a visiting professor before I moved here and took this position.I mean it all tracks – no matter how many times I count because there is literally no way it's correct, but alas, it is. I was 23 when I taught my first class – THAT is absolutely insane in retrospect. At 23, I had no business teaching anyone about literally anything. It did of course make me stop to think about what I would want to teach that 23-year-old me to make these 25+ years easier. If I could tell her something – I would tell her that your thoughts and words are either weapons or tools, and you get to decide which they are.Words are powerful. Thoughts are powerful. Both can be weapons if we choose to use them that way, but that means they are also tools. Tools to build the person we want to be. Tools to convey that person to the world. Tools to build the life we want to live. Or they can be weapons. Weapons to attack ourselves. Weapons to destroy our hopes and our dreams and our relationships. Weapons to hurt other people and perpetuate a vicious cycle. So 23-year-old, 1999 Jen - Use them wisely. (And STOP TWEEZING YOUR EYEBROWS!)Thank you for listening and being part of this community! We're thrilled to talk with former Seahawk guard Jaylen Fornes about his journey in life and hoops, including two different stints at UNCW that saw his teams hang banners in Trask Coliseum. Fornes, who also played pro ball in Denmark, played for three different coaches in Wilmington, with each at a distinct stage of building their program. He shares his perspective on getting to know Coach Takayo Siddle as a young assistant then reconnecting with him as a head coach as he looked to build a winning foundation. Since returning home, Fornes has been working to build his clothing brand, Stack Your Days (www.stackyourdays.net) and working with young basketball players to make their dreams come true, just as he did as a young man from humble beginnings in Pamlico County. Jaylen is an instant Perchcast legend and someone you'll see coaching very soon.

Griffin Warner and Big East Ben talk CBB betting for the Sunday March Madness card. March 22 “Need for Seeds” College Basketball Podcast with Griffin Warner and Big East Ben. The hosts began by analyzing Saturday's Round of 32 losses and looking ahead to Sunday's games. Griffin criticized Drake's coach, McCollum, for failing to adjust to JT Toppin's dominance against Texas Tech. Toppin shot 12-for-14, and Griffin mocked McCollum's interview awkwardness and coaching rigidity. Ben echoed the criticism, pointing out McCollum ignored UNCW's successful strategy. Both hosts agreed that Drake didn't adapt defensively, and Griffin admitted only realizing in hindsight how stagnant their scheme was. Ben joked about BYU's Dawson Baker delivering an “all-time nut shot” and mentioned that the Badgers were too slow to capitalize. He then criticized how NIL and transfers have gutted mid-majors, shifting power toward elite programs and killing underdog stories. Griffin responded by saying the tournament is now a “favorites paradise,” and even good underdogs struggled to win outright. Both were frustrated by end-of-game scenarios and failed covers, especially in games like Gonzaga's push, which involved pointless fouls and missed final shots. Griffin and Ben moved through Sunday's betting card. On UConn vs. Florida, Ben confidently picked Florida -9, foreseeing a blowout and possibly a Danny Hurley ejection. Griffin leaned UConn +9 due to line value but acknowledged Florida's strengths and UConn's inconsistency. On Baylor vs. Duke, Griffin liked Baylor's shooters and athletes but warned Duke's size could overwhelm them. Ben thought the game total (143.5) was low and envisioned Duke pulling away late. Both agreed Baylor needed to slow the game to stay close. In Illinois vs. Kentucky, Ben leaned under 170, doubting either team's consistency. Griffin took Illinois -2, citing Kentucky's softness and reliance on threes. He admitted the pick wasn't strong but viewed it as a better side. On Alabama vs. St. Mary's, Ben said Alabama would “run them off the court,” calling St. Mary's “slow as molasses.” He compared Alabama to a better version of Vanderbilt, who nearly beat St. Mary's. Griffin backed under 149 instead, saying Alabama would control pace and St. Mary's couldn't score enough. The Colorado State vs. Maryland game had Ben predicting a blowout win for Maryland due to their size and physicality. Griffin was cautious but took over 143, sensing a closer game. On Ole Miss vs. Iowa State, both liked Ole Miss +5.5. Ben even predicted a straight-up win, noting Iowa State's injuries and offensive issues. Griffin agreed, citing better health and shooting depth for Ole Miss. For New Mexico vs. Michigan State, Ben dismissed New Mexico's reliance on offensive rebounds, which wouldn't work against Michigan State's bigs. He backed Michigan State -7.5. Griffin partially disagreed, saying Marquette's Stevie Mitchell was a tougher defender than MSU's guards. Still, he acknowledged that New Mexico's lack of shooting and depth made them vulnerable and chose under 148.5. Player comments included praise for JT Toppin's efficiency, criticism of Frederick King's brief poor performance, and debates over players like David Joplin, Chase Ross, and Solo Ball. BYU's Keita and Traore were highlighted for overpowering Wisconsin inside. The hosts also joked about coaching rumors, NIL finances, and players' tournament trajectories. Ben cited his bracket ranking in the 99.9th percentile but attributed that to picking mostly favorites. Griffin reflected on how betting underdogs but picking favorites in brackets led to regret. They wrapped the show with their best bets: Ben took Alabama -5.5, while Griffin preferred the under in the same game. They offered a $25 promo code “survive to five” and teased their Sweet 16 coverage and tournament merch. Their contrasting picks reflect different philosophies—Ben trusting elite talent, Griffin seeking value against inflated lines. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
