In this episode, a conversation with academics and writers Mark Edele and Marko Pavlyshyn. Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine came as a shock to most of the world. In order to understand why this happened, a growing army of self-declared experts provided explanations often misrepresenting the history of Ukraine and of Russia and misinterpreting the pre-history of this war and the role of outside forces. Mark Edele, a world authority on the history of the Soviet Union, explains why and how this conflict came about in his new book, Russia's War Against Ukraine. He considers competing historical claims and arguments with authority and lucidity. The book informs a more nuanced and well-informed debate about this war and its implications. Please note, this is a recording from a live in-store event.

"That Russia and Ukraine have diverged politically so radically since 1991 is partially due to their position vis-à-vis the imploded empire they emerged from," writes Mark Edele in Russia's War Against Ukraine: The Whole Story (Melbourne University Publishing, 2023). As its subtitle suggests, this short work - "a book by an outsider written for outsiders" - has big ambitions to explain the immediate, long-, and very long-term reasons for the war. How did two so similar yet so different nations emerge? How can “outsiders” separate national myths from true origin stories? Who started the war and how will it end? Mark Edele is a Russianist who became - in his own words - a historian of the Soviet Empire largely due to his "encounter with Ukraine and its history". Hansen Chair in History at the University of Melbourne, he was born and raised in southern Bavaria and educated at the universities of Erlangen, Tübingen, Moscow, and Chicago, where he completed his doctoral research on Soviet World War II veterans under Sheila Fitzpatrick. *The author's own book recommendations for the Writers' Writers tip sheet are German Blood, Slavic Soil: How Nazi Königsberg Became Soviet Kaliningrad by Nicole Eaton (Cornell University Press, April 2023) and The Rider by Tim Krabbé (Bloomsbury Paperbacks, 2016 – first published 1978). Debates on Stalinism (Manchester University Press, 2020) considers some of the major debates about Stalinism during and after the Cold War. Was ‘Stalinism' a system in its own right, or just one stage in the overall development of Soviet society? Was it an aberration from Leninism, or the logical conclusion of Marxism? Was its violence an expression of revenge of the Russian past, or the result of a revolutionary mindset? In approaching these questions, the book unpacks complex historiographical debates in which evidence, politics, personality, and biography are entangled. In doing so, Debates on Stalinism allows readers to better understand the history of history writing, and sheds light on contemporary controversies and conflicts in the successor states of the Soviet Union, and in particular Russia and Ukraine. Mark Edele is a historian of the Soviet Union and its successor states. He is the inaugural Hansen Professor in History at the University of Melbourne, and an Australian Research Council Future Fellow (2015-2019). Stalinism at War: The Soviet Union in World War II (Bloomsbury Publishing, 2021) tells the epic story of the Soviet Union in World War Two. Starting with Soviet involvement in the war in Asia and ending with a bloody counter-insurgency in the borderlands of Ukraine, Belarus and the Baltics, the Soviet Union's war was both considerably longer and more all-encompassing than is sometimes appreciated. Here, acclaimed scholar Mark Edele explores the complex experiences of both ordinary and extraordinary citizens – Russians and Koreans, Ukrainians and Jews, Lithuanians and Georgians, men and women, loyal Stalinists and critics of his regime – to reveal how the Soviet Union and leadership of a ruthless dictator propelled Allied victory over Germany and Japan. In doing so, Edele weaves together material on the society and culture of the wartime years with high-level politics and unites the military, economic and political history of the Soviet Union with broader popular histories from below. The result is an engaging, intelligent and authoritative account of the Soviet Union from 1937 to 1949. But this time it's all about you!  In the first series, Edele, Keavy, Lindsay and Sinead talked about the times that they've had to start over in their life, from new careers to new relationships. The reaction to the first series was incredible, and so many of you had your own stories about starting over... Or you were asking the girls for their advice! Therefore, we thought we'd record their reactions and let you hear them on the podcast. In this episode... Chloe in Dubai is considering moving back to the UK with her 3 year old daughter... How much of a support network do you need when your kids hit school age? Sarah's body is going through a change, but her husband doesn't understand how she's feeling... How can you explain the menopause to a man, when men's bodies don't go through the same thing? Jason in Glasgow wanted to ask about rebuilding friendships... Is it worth trying to rebuild after a big argument, or sometimes do you need to accept that some friendships naturally come to an end? If you'd like to get in touch with Edele, Sinead, Lindsay and Keavy about any of the subjects they discuss in Starting Over, they'd love to hear from you: follow @BWitchedReunion on Twitter or @BWitchedOfficial on Instagram, or @BWitchedReunion on Facebook. Starting Over with BWitched

In the final episode of their podcast Starting Over, Edele, Sinead, Lindsay and Keavy from B*Witched talk about their experiences of divorce. Divorce rates are increasing across the world, and of course, this is being linked to the stresses that the pandemic has had on relationships. In this episode, Edele talks about the breakdown of her marriage and the affect that it had on her general wellbeing. She is honest about the physical as well as the emotional reaction that she experienced, and urges anyone who's feeling the same way to reach out if they're struggling. Lindsay talks about the breakdown of her first marriage and how difficult it can be to unpick your lives from each other, especially when the relationship has been a constant in your life for so long. She makes the point that there is light at the end of the tunnel, and talks about how she had to learn how to make sure past experiences didn't affect new relationships.Ultimately, everyone deserves happiness and you always have a choice - even if that choice feels like an impossible one to make. If any of the discussions in this episode have affected you and you feel as if you'd like to talk to someone, then here's a few suggestions for organisations who may be able to help: Mind - 0300 123 3393 The Samaritans - 116 123 Refuge - 0808 2000 247 Calm - 0800 58 58 58

In the fifth episode of their new podcast Starting Over, Keavy joins Edele, Sinead and Lindsay for the first time as the girls talk about motherhood!Keavy has just had twins and talks about how she's been in lockdown for over a year because of her pregnancy. She's experiencing all of the normal things that you go through when you have a new baby, like the lack of sleep - but because of the pandemic, it's been a very different experience to normal (only a handful of people have met the new babies so far, and her parents may not even meet them until after their first birthday). All of the girls are Mum's, and they talk about what is expected of mothers and the pressures that Mum's can sometimes feel. You're bombarded with information... Everyone has their own opinion on how to be a parent... But the girls talk about how you can choose to be the mother you want to be, and how you shouldn't put too much pressure on yourself at what can be a really vulnerable time. They also talk about how you can feel a loss of identity when you become a new Mum, and how it can be difficult to achieve balance in your life as a whole. As always, they're open, they're honest and they hope that this podcast helps you if you're going through a tough time. In the fourth episode of their new podcast Starting Over, Edele, Sinead and Lindsay from B*Witched talk about financial loss - both in terms of the band coming to an end, but also the losses that they faced as a result of the global recession in 2008 which hit Ireland particularly badly. Sinead talks about the pressure she felt after she'd invested in properties and saw them all tumbling into negative equity as a result of the recession - she was pregnant at the time, and felt a huge responsibility on her shoulders. Edele talks about the financial pressures that come with being a new Mum, and how at one point she was paying her mortgage on her credit card and moved to England in a rusty Volkswagen Passat to start over again. Lindsay talks about her Dad and how the recession affected him in Greece - he had retired at the time, and shows that financial loss can hit anyone at any stage in life. The global pandemic has affected so many people financially, and financial worry can absolutely be emotional worry. Sometimes, it can feel like there's no way out when it comes to money - but if you're in this position, we hope that the conversations in this episode encourage you to reach out and ask for help. When you do, it can be really surprising where help can come from.Keavy will of course be joining the rest of the girls a little later in the series... She talks really honestly about her grieving process, and how important her relationships with the other girls were at this dreadful time in her life.Sinead moved in with her boyfriend (now husband!) Michael after the band ended, and threw herself into work. She had a big ambition - she wanted to find and launch the next big Irish girl group - and she invested a lot of time and money in the process. Ultimately, it didn't work out, and Sinead talks about how she had to start again... Again! Edele moved back to Ireland and started songwriting. As well as writing for other people, she also wrote an album for herself - and in this episode she talks really openly about the difficulties she faced because of being "Edele from B*Witched". Yes, they'd had huge success - but when it comes to the music industry, this comes with negatives as well as positives. Keavy will of course be joining the rest of the girls a little later in the series... She's currently a little busy as she's just had two gorgeous babies! In the first episode of their new podcast Starting Over, Edele, Sinead and Lindsay from B*Witched talk about how it felt to achieve their dreams and be on top of the world as the youngest girl band at the time to top the charts in the UK. They had four Number 1 singles, a double platinum album, they travelled the world, toured America with Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears, appeared on Top of the Pops, performed at The BRITs... Only to be dropped by their record label and be faced with the prospect of starting over again. With the world going into lockdown, some of the same feelings began to surface again - what do you do when your world has been turned upside down? Edele, Lindsay and Sinead talk openly and emotionally about how they picked themselves up, dusted themselves off, and rebuilt their identities after their careers with the band came to an end, in the hope that their honesty can help other people who may be facing a similar situation as a result of the pandemic. The last year has also highlighted just how much we all need to connect, even if it is over Zoom. Of course, the girls hope that this podcast gives those who need it some good advice and the reassurance that you can put yourself back together when it feels like everything is falling apart... But by recording remotely from their homes on different sides of the Irish Sea, this podcast has also helped them to reconnect and reminisce about some of the fantastic experiences they shared together when the world was a happier place.Keavy will of course be joining the rest of the girls a little later in the series... KUULA | Ede Schank Tamkivi: Äratundmine tekib esimestel hetkedel. Kui peaksid hakkama kedagi milleski veenma, siis ei peaks sellele energiat kulutama Ede Schank Tamkivi on vabakutseline ajakirjanik, kes on 2012.aastal kolis koos perega California läänerannikul asuvasse Palo Altosse, mille põhjal on ta kirjutanud raamatu "Minu California. Mull mullis."

'You’re not putting the domestos beside the chicken fillets thanks’ This week on Up To 90, we talk pine-nuts, B*Witched, pine-nuts, double denim, pine-nuts, fancy ear rings, pine-nuts and much much more. B*Witched were an Irish girl group who claimed to fight ‘like their Das as well’, had a habit of putting Donna Air in awkward positions, and just generally stormed the UK charts from 1997 to 2002. We chat the hits, the flops, selling albums, jealousies, head-wrecks, all-rounders and big reunions, but really this episode pivots around the big questions that nobody save us two pioneering ginger warriors are brave enough to ask: why are pine-nuts so expensive? What are our ears made out of? Why are teenagers flying to Zambia to build schools when they can’t even make their own beds? Why is Julie still mourning a ruler? Is the butterfly farm of her youth another imagined memory in her neurotic meanderings? We also look at where the B*Witched girls are now and reminisce about positive ways in which parents used to communicate in the eighties. If you are the Greg who broke Julie’s ruler in 1991 please get in touch at Twitter, Insta or Done Deal @upto90podcast. Please remember to download rather than casually listen as we want maximum commitment here and also that’s what counts on chart terms...who knew?< *Edele, we apologize in advance for what’s about to happen here

In 1998 the Spice girls were busy dealing with over-exposure and the departure of Geri Halliwell.  Their crown was deftly snatched away by an Irish foursome who jigged and twinkled their way to the top of the charts pumping out hit after hit.  B*witched struck hard and fast and world domination followed. For Edele it was the beginning of a punishing schedule and unrelenting hard work. A few years later with the world at their feet and two double platinum albums under their belt the record company pulled the plug on the girl’s third record essentially ending their careers with a phonecall.  Over the years relationships between the girls became strained. Edele continued to work behind the scenes as a songwriter until ten years later an offer came to reunite B*witched. They patched up their differences and returned to the spotlight with new music.  Edele chats about her time in the band and how her life has changed since the reunion.
